Hollywood is planning a TV drama remake of classic 2001 assassin anime Noir.
The adaptation is being developed by US cable network Starz, with the project being produced by Sam Raimi, whose direction and production credits include Evil Dead, the Spider-Man films, Hercules, Xena, and Spartacus, and Robert Tapert, also involved in the likes of Hercules and Xena.
The series is to be written by Stephen Lightfoot, best known for “House of Saddam.” Just to what extent the series will resemble the original beyond almost certainly featuring two pretty ladies with guns and a serious problem is not known.
Whilst Hollywood’s reputation for anime adaptations could hardly be worse, credible production staff and source material which is closer to standard Hollywood fare than most anime classics suggest the production may yet meet with fan approval, or at least be ignored without undue rancour.

oh no, another hollywood crap ... but wait, tv drama ? interesting ....
Hollywood crap sadly is better than the sitcom-TV-boring crap nowadays. TV is extremely anemic right now.
REALLY weird adaptation news. Just weird.
Kinda sad that it'd likely mean there won't be any patented anime pantyshots and the child-assassin will likely be replaced by an adult. An adult male...
I guess having two female assassins will be the only resemblance to the original. It will take place in the USA, one girl will be black. Instead of the cool classical score they will have rap and the story will be some sort of gang war. Ugh.
They won't be female assassins anymore. One of them will be an extremely muscly guy and the other one will be Zac Efron.
Dwayne Johnson as brainless hulk who assraeps Efron, the emo boy who cuts himself? ugh.
Then it will be called BL assassins.
Lindsay Lohan better not get the part...
I'd watch it.
You should watch The Walking Dead and Breaking Bad, or the sadly cancelled Jericho and The Sarah Connor Chronicles. I have seen honestly more good series from USA than people want to credit it for.
Regarding Noir, it's a mix of caution and curiosity. Caution because of the possible adaptation decay, curiosity because Raimi is producing it. And Hollywood have more hawt blondes than Japan can hope for. Also, seeing that the guy behind Hercules and Xena is involved, I will be more than optmistic about them keeping the homoerotism of the original anime.
Drama like b-TV Hercules and Xena, not exactly top class TV there.
Fuck westerners fucking with anime.
ITT: Sankaku Complex users race to be the first to declare the utter suckitude of everything ever.
They should stick with the MARVEL stuff.
ie. Xmen, Ironmen, Fantastic men.
lol @ the anon before me, spoken with true words.
lol @ "suckitude." That comment is going into my favorite quotes on my facebook page. I'm also adding suckitude to my large vocabulary list of unusual, and uterly useless words.
To be fair, Raimi didn't have the clout to get a high budget in the Xeno/evil dead days.
Hes got talent, and he knows how to work source material. Have the cast and crew watch the Professional a few times, and keep in a little of the Xena/Gabby lesbianism undertones, and I think he could it well.
Xena? Hercules? Fuck Holywood!
It will be a comedy.
Noir warrior assassin better not happen Hollywood.
Hollywood ran out of ideas so they're adapting every Japanese anime and game they can find. They're already remaking every damned thing left and right.
They better not turn it into yaoi!
There better hints of yuri at least...
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO~
Don't raep one of my favorites! -_-
and the joke will be on us... I am expecting mortal kombat quality with guns... and I don't mean the movies.
Noir- Another high school drama filled with gun action.
its official: hollywood is dead to me now -_-
Then it will be just a shitty show not a adaptation.
There in no shortage of source material in America. We have a massive supply of comic book, graphic novels, and all types of fiction.
These people only take ideas from Japan to attract more viewers, partly because of articles like this.
Everything is about generating attention in Hollywood.
Sam Raimi could pull it off. He is one of the better people to try in Hollywood.
Oh noez! Another High School drama with sex, guns, and assassins!
...which will close the circle cos noir was hogwash to begin with...
Most anime is not exactly top class TV either - recall that these shows usually air in the early hours of the morning.
"All these reality news are depressing me."
QFT, needs more anime and 2D stuff, 3D is fail - at least some cosplayers are ok = 2.5D :)
The airing time really only indicates the audience size/demographics not the quality.
All these reality news are depressing me. Don't you have any more of that bukkake stuff or something?
Yes but this was not exactly bleach or one piece
either way, we need our own psychotic otaku division
guys in charge of death threat letters and youtube producer decapitations
What fxc2 said.
Don't want to hear about fails for a while.
Air time =/= quality
"Most anime is not exactly top class TV either"
- you mean not mainstream ? :)
Anon at 00:21 has got it right.
@maderlulz
"making Anime mainstream"
- unfortunately it would mean making more shitty animes like Naruto and producing more narutards
- if anime as it is would have mainstream potentiality it would be already mainstream
Marimite aired in the morning...
just look what they did to kamen rider ryuuki
@Maderlulz, OH hell NO, I've alreadt stood by and watched gaming become mainstream. Result: 90% of the released games are crap or brilliant classics that were rehashed into crap ruining years of reputation and fandom. Over my dead body that I will let that happen to anime.
"even stronger chances with haters raising their kids to hate "Japanese cartoons". "
=>_>=
That could never backfire on them.
@alex251
Being on the internet Anime is everywhere and seems mainstream to some degree at least larger than cult flick followers, with an age demographic from teens to adults who lived in the 70's, 80's and 90's. Anime had a strong influence on our upbringings. Those adults have children expose them to their interests and hobbies it is passed to the next generation with 2x the chance of potential to increase popularity even stronger chances with haters raising their kids to hate "Japanese cartoons". Remember it's not the content of the entertainment it's how it's manipulated with the popularity it gains.
Don't you get it? Hollywood is making shitty anime adapted live action movies to enslave more brainless hipsters, milking them to in turn make a profit. Thus making Anime mainstream and ultimately helping Japan's economy. No, I haven't watched Noir. I noticed the opinions about the anime varies person to person here.
Hollywood better NOT screw this anime, or else we will riot!
Sorry, but according to my well carefully and scientifically approved research statistics the chance of Hollywood screwing this one is 140%.
Over 9000 percentttt!!!!!!!!!!
1400%
math is hard
I think a riot would be in order if they do screw this up.
I am guessing that they will take out the lesbianism, the back story, the complex plot, make Yumura older, and change the ending so that there will be a possibility to make a sequel. Effectively making this a mix between "Selma and Louise" and "Die Hard". Ugh, Sam Raimi why did you have to sell out?
Just be happy that this will fail and they won't move onto other anime like "Serial Experiments Lain".
Look people, this show was never meant for us anyway. It's gonna be your momma's sunday favorite.
Yea rite !! They dont give a a shit about anything we say ... Almost all of their remakes are equally crappy !!
They would jux reply by making another classic much anime into some crappy ass hour and half movie! N the best part is u or me would go watch it hopping it would somehow watch it !
The Blood the last vampire movie was in my opinion more entertaining than the anime movie that it was based on.
I felt a chill running down my spine...
This isn't Hollywood in any way. Starz is a movie channel that produces very little actual content, and just shows the movies that actually ARE made in Hollywood. Also, they own Manga Entertainment, so it's not like anime is some foreign concept to them. Throw in Sam Raimi, and I have quite a bit of hope for this.
Still No. This is Hollywood quality you are thinking about. Expect no respect for the source material.
The ones in power in the US never had respect for anything or anyone but themselves.
Regardless of the technical advantage they have over the Japanese, trust me that the inevitable rewriting of the script to 'fit US audience' will be the start of its fail.
I bet though that the original makers don't give fuck about it. They must've been paid cold hard cash(for both copyright AND for shutting up), and people are still gonna regard theirs as better.
TV Drama Noir adaptation ? let's see how it'd be unveiled :p
There's a reason all these hollywood movies based on anime are NEVER made..
Because it's a stupid idea, and the financing of it never goes through because their not crazy..
the anime sucked, the live action will suck.
