PlayStation 3 Has Outsold Xbox 360

tose-game-stats-009.jpg

Statistics published by top game developer Tose show that with 42 million the total number of PS3s sold globally have exceeded the Xbox 360 by a million units.

The statistics coe by way of a presentation by Tose (a prolific Kyoto-based game developer best known for not being known, as their games as usually credited exclusively to the company outsourcing the work to them, most often Nintendo) at the Kyoto Cross Media Experience 2010, published by Famitsu.

Global sales of each major console to date:

PlayStation 2: 120,000,000

PlayStation: 102,000,000

Wii: 74,000,000

NES: 63,000,000

SNES: 49,000,000

PlayStation 3: 42,000,000

Xbox 360: 41,000,000

N64: 33,000,000

Megadrive: 34,000,000

Xbox: 24,000,000

GameCube: 22,000,000

Atari 2600: 14,000,000

DreamCast: 11,000,000

PC Engine: 10,000,000

Sega Saturn: 8,700,000

Update: Tose is apologising, saying it made an “error” in its figures for Xbox 360 sales, undercounting sales by 3 million units (and hence having erroneously implied the Xbox 360 was in the lead), having probably not realised its slide would become the subject of innumerable articles keen to point out the supposed change in leadership.

I have the ps3, ps2, ps1, xbox 360, and the sega saturn. Unforunately, the controllers aren't working anymore on the sega saturn (the system works fine though). Such a shame, I can see the game run, but can't interact with it :(

42 vs 41 millions sold units, PS3 sacked Xbox360. Good for Sony.

Xbox360 sold 71% more units than it's predecessor while PS3 sold only 35% of it's predecessor. M$ on the rise, Sony plummeting.

Wii sold about 80% more units than PS3 or Xbox360. Nintendo rules.

Statistics, it's all in the way you interprete them. ^_^

It has a 0,887 MHz 8bit CPU, 37 bytes RAM and a resolution of 128×200 pixels. Monochrome graphics with four colored sprites.

So they work with false numbers? Interesting. Famitsu has a strong preference for japanese products, whatever they write is to be taken with a grain of salt. Outright lying disqualifies them completely, though.

Chinese quality, you can find it everywhere. Don't believe statistics you didn't forge yourself, proven once more.

Laff, the 360 has functionalities now? As I see it the customization of the PS3, and the varied uses it has, all contribute towards their sales, seperate or not. People bought the PS3 because Sony's consoles are reliable. M$ tried to spew out a next gen console as fast as possible, with it's faults, which still exist. Sorry, but, I am glad the PS3 is up there.

anon@14:35 If you don't want to count the red ringed 360s you also shouldn't count the PS3s that were bought as BluRay players or to build parallel computers. In the end it evens itself out.

    Comment by Anonymous
    00:43 09/11/2010 # ! Neutral (+0.4)

Why would you not count the PS3s sold as BluRay players or as parallel computers? Those sales should be tallied because those purchases were based on the functionality of the PS3.

The sales from shipped 360 replacements are entirely different... unless you count a 50% failure rate as part of the 360's functionality.

    Comment by Anonymous
    05:43 09/11/2010 # ! Neutral (+0.2)

Actually, it does even itself out. While the PS3's BluRay is a feature, it is only one of the many feature's available, and it's functionality is primarily for all sorts of things. Buying it for one of those functionalities means you are only utilizing a percentage of the capacity of the PS3. Using it only for a few things -- building a parallel computer, playing games, or watching BluRay movies -- means the functionality capacities aren't always being used 100%, as in the case of many functional Xbox 360's.

As it stands, the 360 has many of the same rough features minus BluRay that the PS3 has, but that's a discussion for another time; my point goes to this.

Since the functionality is not being utilized 100%, there is a plausible argument to be had when you are only using part of it if it is up against the RRoD rate of the 360, as the same argument can be compiled that, since the 360's capacities are no longer being used at full, the PS3's capacities are equally not being used at full.

The differences key lies mostly in how that functionality is no longer 'there.' The 360 RRods, while the PS3's function is simply not -used- which presents the same basic evening out.

My final point is; semantics scmenatics, arguing functionalities and evening out, and counting 'functionality' as something to base sales figures or what-have-you is retarded.

Base it on units shipped and sold, and not on 'how functional' it is. Simple, easy, and you can count higher than how many functional units were sold -- a fictional number, since you would have to count how much percentage of functionality is utilized, and according to ones argument, how much of the capacity is utilized.

In a nutshell; arguing semantics by injecting functionality into a sales-based figure is a faulty, and -- for good reason -- never used model to judge on sold units.

Meh. Any consoles selling more than 40 million units in a generation is pretty damn successful. So far, all three has been thriving in general. Which kind of will surprise people in the past, thought we lived in a two-console-maximum environment.

But add on top Nintendo DS, PSP and iPhone/Cellphone and PC gaming and damn, the gaming industry is pretty damn sturdy.

Screw the console wars crap. Let's get all HIPPIE about gaming. lol

    PlayStation 2: 120,000,000
    NES: 63,000,000
    SNES: 49,000,000

    120,000,000(PS2)-63,000,000(NES)=57,000,000
    120,000,000-49,000,000(SNES)=71,000,000

The average between 71mil and 57mil is 64mil.

And so we have approximately 64,000,000 of gamers who havent ever had nor NES nor SNES, never played such classics as Mario.... thats so sad.
