Statistics published by top game developer Tose show that with 42 million the total number of PS3s sold globally have exceeded the Xbox 360 by a million units.
The statistics coe by way of a presentation by Tose (a prolific Kyoto-based game developer best known for not being known, as their games as usually credited exclusively to the company outsourcing the work to them, most often Nintendo) at the Kyoto Cross Media Experience 2010, published by Famitsu.
Global sales of each major console to date:

The slides:
Update: Tose is apologising, saying it made an “error” in its figures for Xbox 360 sales, undercounting sales by 3 million units (and hence having erroneously implied the Xbox 360 was in the lead), having probably not realised its slide would become the subject of innumerable articles keen to point out the supposed change in leadership.

anyone surprised?
Not me, sir.
Lol, I'm part of 100m+ that bought PS/2 but not PS3. haha
PS2 pwns all the consoles, bitches.
Best console ever made, for both budget and performance.
Im part of the 2,000,000 with a 3DO, and mine still works...
anyone else have those things still??
I have the ps3, ps2, ps1, xbox 360, and the sega saturn. Unforunately, the controllers aren't working anymore on the sega saturn (the system works fine though). Such a shame, I can see the game run, but can't interact with it :(
i had a odyssey ...
am I alone???
My God! PS2 pwns them all.
How is it being a virgin, pretty much everyone above this caret? ^
>implying you're not a virgin too.
I am below this caret. And I am not implying anything. B)
Also, PS2 forever.
@18:58
How is being hated by everyone because of your foul personality working out for you? Venting out anger on the internet I see.
Considering budget, features, and support(without online network support) I don't find this surprising. And the(not so useful) backward compability :)
Long life my PS2 :P
We are legion.
42 vs 41 millions sold units, PS3 sacked Xbox360. Good for Sony.
Xbox360 sold 71% more units than it's predecessor while PS3 sold only 35% of it's predecessor. M$ on the rise, Sony plummeting.
Wii sold about 80% more units than PS3 or Xbox360. Nintendo rules.
Statistics, it's all in the way you interprete them. ^_^
My 2600 lasted to the day I dumped it! Proud still on cycling the score counter~
I still have a Interton VC4000 stored somewhere. A console probably nobody here ever heard of, a relic just as old as the Atari 2600.
It has a 0,887 MHz 8bit CPU, 37 bytes RAM and a resolution of 128×200 pixels. Monochrome graphics with four colored sprites.
No, there's no typo and I'm not kidding you either. lulz
I have a PS2 and no PS3 too, yay!
ur a disgrace
My ol' PS2 (SCPH-300006) is still in working order. Never been serviced yet it still works fine despite approaching its 8th birthday.
Interesting Chart except for the fact that Xbox360 is already at 44mil sold and PS3 is still at 42mil
Count me in with a ps2 aswell.
i for me, psx was the best console i've ever played.
The only suprise was how little research they must have put into that data when microsoft themselves stated at the end of the fiscal year in september that it has sold over 44.5 million 360s.
I was thinking the same indeed.
http://www.examiner.com/video-game-in-national/ps3-tops-over-41-5-million-units-trails-xbox-360-by-less-than-3-million
but then I read "famitsu" and all makes sense.
Some of the other sales figures are very laughable as well if sales figures from the companies themselves are to be trusted.
http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/release/100118e.html
States the PS2 has sold over 140mill since 2000.
Considering I own 5 PS3s, I'm not very surprised.
That reminds me of the us military having bought many PS3's to use them as servers or something. ^^
NES sold more than the SNES??
I'm gay or what is the problem with this chart?
So they work with false numbers? Interesting. Famitsu has a strong preference for japanese products, whatever they write is to be taken with a grain of salt. Outright lying disqualifies them completely, though.
Chinese quality, you can find it everywhere. Don't believe statistics you didn't forge yourself, proven once more.
Famitsu sucks dicks. Anyone with half a brain can tell that for the last couple years they've been taking bribes. Nintendogs scored a perfect 10, nuff said.
If you trust them, you're an idiot.
Maybe they aren't counting the millions of 360s that red ringed and are now nothing more than paperweights.
sony and MS are counting the shipping units.
Only paper weights if you were a dumb ass and refused to ship it back in.
yeah well let's also keep in mind a bunch of those ps3 are being used for bluray exclusivity
"The only suprise was how little research they must have put into that data when microsoft themselves stated at the end of the fiscal year in september that it has sold over 44.5 million 360s."
i was like wtf at this and then i read "microsoft" and all make sense.
famitsu....crosoft....same shit.
^ in b4 lame joke
-Where does a one legged man work?
IHOP.
@anon 05.43
Laff, the 360 has functionalities now? As I see it the customization of the PS3, and the varied uses it has, all contribute towards their sales, seperate or not. People bought the PS3 because Sony's consoles are reliable. M$ tried to spew out a next gen console as fast as possible, with it's faults, which still exist. Sorry, but, I am glad the PS3 is up there.
anon@14:35 If you don't want to count the red ringed 360s you also shouldn't count the PS3s that were bought as BluRay players or to build parallel computers. In the end it evens itself out.
Why would you not count the PS3s sold as BluRay players or as parallel computers? Those sales should be tallied because those purchases were based on the functionality of the PS3.
The sales from shipped 360 replacements are entirely different... unless you count a 50% failure rate as part of the 360's functionality.
Actually, it does even itself out. While the PS3's BluRay is a feature, it is only one of the many feature's available, and it's functionality is primarily for all sorts of things. Buying it for one of those functionalities means you are only utilizing a percentage of the capacity of the PS3. Using it only for a few things -- building a parallel computer, playing games, or watching BluRay movies -- means the functionality capacities aren't always being used 100%, as in the case of many functional Xbox 360's.
As it stands, the 360 has many of the same rough features minus BluRay that the PS3 has, but that's a discussion for another time; my point goes to this.
Since the functionality is not being utilized 100%, there is a plausible argument to be had when you are only using part of it if it is up against the RRoD rate of the 360, as the same argument can be compiled that, since the 360's capacities are no longer being used at full, the PS3's capacities are equally not being used at full.
The differences key lies mostly in how that functionality is no longer 'there.' The 360 RRods, while the PS3's function is simply not -used- which presents the same basic evening out.
My final point is; semantics scmenatics, arguing functionalities and evening out, and counting 'functionality' as something to base sales figures or what-have-you is retarded.
Base it on units shipped and sold, and not on 'how functional' it is. Simple, easy, and you can count higher than how many functional units were sold -- a fictional number, since you would have to count how much percentage of functionality is utilized, and according to ones argument, how much of the capacity is utilized.
In a nutshell; arguing semantics by injecting functionality into a sales-based figure is a faulty, and -- for good reason -- never used model to judge on sold units.
The simple fact is units replaced due to failures under warrenty such as teh RROD do not figure into sales data.
Keep Rockin Sony!
It was only a matter of time and besides PS Triple got all the games.
Nop. It's not getting any Cave STG ports, no Idolm@aster, no Dream C Club, no Blue Dragon, no Senko no Ronde, among others.
Not at all. To me, PS3 in anyway is superior to Xbox360. The only thing i like bout Xbox is the online system under microsoft games.
Curiously enough, the vast majority of multiplatform games are still better on the 360, almost four years after the PS3's launch.
Probably because they force people to pay for it. *rolls eyes*
I'll be surprised if it outsells Wii.
With Wii's huge lead? Won't happen.
Meh. Any consoles selling more than 40 million units in a generation is pretty damn successful. So far, all three has been thriving in general. Which kind of will surprise people in the past, thought we lived in a two-console-maximum environment.
But add on top Nintendo DS, PSP and iPhone/Cellphone and PC gaming and damn, the gaming industry is pretty damn sturdy.
Screw the console wars crap. Let's get all HIPPIE about gaming. lol
Actually software sales are more important because the consoles are sold below production and marketing costs.
Nintendo would like to have a word with you.
i guess i am the only one just Pro console as long as the love for videogames goes on i am happy you now. except for all that super casual shit they are throwing at us to get my fuckin grandma to play... i feel betrayed
You fanboys are pathetic.
I'm surprised that "PC" is one of the lowest sold... then again god knows what they're counting
That is PC Engine aka TurboGrafx 16, not PC.
im not but only dreamcast surprised me slightly i thought more were sold. well dream cast was ahead of its time rip dc
PlayStation 2: 120,000,000
NES: 63,000,000
SNES: 49,000,000
120,000,000(PS2)-63,000,000(NES)=57,000,000
120,000,000-49,000,000(SNES)=71,000,000
The average between 71mil and 57mil is 64mil.
And so we have approximately 64,000,000 of gamers who havent ever had nor NES nor SNES, never played such classics as Mario.... thats so sad.
*Cough* theres always emulators...and Mario? im sure anyone who knows anything about gameing will know about the old games such as Mario
The fact that the PS2 came out long after the NES and SNES ceased production equates into your 'formula' how?
Who's to say that 112mill people who owned a NES/SNES didn't just buy a PS2 when it came out?
360 is crap that is hated outside of the US and it's 8-18yo "I wanna shoot stuff, gimme FPS games I could play on a comptuer!!" audience..
So the PS3 is crap by your definition as well then.
Considering it has the same FPS games that in your opinion make the 360 shit.
Which is why 360 has more RPGs than PS3. What's that? No comeback? Thought so. Now STFU.
Yeah, but the RPG's on the 360 are lame and have poorly developed gameplay. Plus the good/decent ones are being ported over to the PS3 with extra content and enhanced graphics.
Quality over quantity.
what a lie please xbox sales are through the roof ps3 is awesome and may pass it in time but this article is crap
