Hollywood’s pending rape of Akira, set to be a PG-13 action flick set in New York, is rumoured to be casting actor Zac Efron, star of such dark and gritty classics as High School Musical, in the lead role of hooligan biker Kaneda.
The rumoured casting decision in detail:
Another rumor which is making the tracking board rounds today is that Zac Efron has apparently been offered the lead role in Albert Hughes’ upcoming live-action adaptation of the popular anime/Katsuhiro Otomo’s six-volume manga Akira. I’m not able to confirm the offer, but one source tells me Efron is in talks, while another says that it is “far from a done deal.”
[…]
Last we heard, producer Andrew Lazar said that Hughes is was busy “conceptualizing the movie with a bunch of visual artists” and working with a new screenwriter, Albert Torres (Henry Poole Is Here), to put his stamp on Akira.
That draft was due in September. Hughes has also talked about the film being PG-13 and the idea that he might only direct the first of two planned films. (One adapting the first three manga volumes, and the second volumes four through six.)
The previous screenplay was set in a post-apocalyptic “New Manhattan” and will feature Akira’s famous red motorcycle. The original Katsuhiro Otomo anime was set in a futuristic and post-war city, Neo-Tokyo, in 2019. As for the casting, here is an excerpt from a previous posting by Russ Fischer:
No cast has ever publicly revealed to be attached. The involvement of Appian Way led many to suspect that DiCaprio would star as the teen biker Kaneda, despite being demonstrably too old for the part, but the actor publicly denied any involvement beyond producing duties.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt was rumored to be in mind for Tetsuo, the friend of Kaneda whose psychic powers are awakened, setting of a cataclysmic chain of destructive events in Neo-Tokyo. He also denied any attachment.
It seems the red motorcycle is all that will survive Hollywood’s “vision” for the adaptation.

Ye gods, Hollywood...
*vomits*
...
...
...
I miss the early 90's...
*vomits again*
As usual, some R&B music. Or are they going let Ayumi Hamasaki sing again for the movie. Well, the first is to be expected, somehow.
Damn, I just said the same thing.
Behold... the Biker Ballet. Ugh
Think about it, a musical climax followed by silence as Tetsuo opens up Akira's cryopod. After a short dialogue with the colonel, there's a villanous 80's beat song about with Tetsuo, him dancing like crazy and being all pissed, and after that a breakdown, as Kaneda joins for the second verse, and they throw sarcasm at each other in duet. It then plays a crescendoing solo as they fight, climaxing as the first volley from SOL hits.
When I think about it, it would've been absolutely kickass, but not this way.
fuck this
Holly shit, every time Hollywood touches an anime and tries to adapt it to live action it turns out to be complete carp.
Just stop it, damn it!
Those Hollywood retards are about to rape another great anime...-_-
*vomits upon seeing the article*
F*CK YOU HOLLYWOOD!!!
JUST...F*CK YOU!!!
Hm. Just wondering. Are they allowed to do live-action adatpions? I can't believe the creators allows such shit, when there have been so many failures.
@Jareth
it's not event part of the industry
LOL. Hollywood is the TROLL of the animé industry.
Wait till Cowboy Bebop Rape comes with Keanu Reeves Spike. You will proceed to cry.
supposedly the bebop rape is in development hell. Which is funny because that one I actually had some hope for (except for the keanu casting, but eh.) I figured since they were making an expanded film based on one episode with a story that kind of lends itself to film (The whole episode with the Red Eye smuggler on TJ) then there was this chance, albeit slim, that it turns out being a decent flick just because they realize they're adapting something so heavily inspired and informed by western cinema and tap into that.
@toyNN
what are you smoking? Shia Labeouf is much fitting of the role than Zac Efron
Well, let it be known that I havent EVER watched any of hollywood anime adaptations. Not a single one. The curiosity doesnt justify wasted time.
Unlike you, probably
The live action "Guyver" movies were the only good thing that Hollywood made...
Everything else beyond that is UTTER SH*T!!!
*sigh*
Live action don't work because these so called 'actors' just can't express even 5% of the quirkiness of most anime/manga/games characters.
Look Chen, I also didn't like Akira and think it is overrated, but as bad as it could be there is no way Hollywood could NOT make it worse :(
There have been talks, as far as I have heard, but I hope the creators kill those wanting to ruin it...
Yup. Akira's gonna be filled with more High School whiny drama.
Dude, news flash, idiots: Akira WAS filled with whiny teenage angst. And don't be so quick to judge it based on Zac Efron, he's not in any way a bad actor. Just because he's mostly been in disneyish teen movies doesn't mean he CAN'T do more. People used to say the same stuff about Johnny Depp, and look at him now!
i rather like zac efron. i've not seen any of the HSM movies but i liked him in "17 again" and i hear he did a fine job in "me and orson welles." personally, though, i can't picture him in any anime role other than light yagami, and i'm told he already turned that offer down saying they should cast someone japanese. so there's a fair chance he'll turn this down on the same grounds.
This is another film I just won't pay for watching...
I like the casting of Efron - 'cus you know they could have picked Shia Labeouf...now that would have sucked.
>> LOL. Hollywood is the TROLL of the animé industry.
This
"Those Hollywood retards are about to rape another great anime...-_-"
Err the movie isn't bad, but be sure to do so before reading the manga (in case you're an animation alien that never heard about Akira).
They seriously couldn't cram everything the manga tells in a mere 2 hours and some.
Hollywood is lazy. Despite a small army of writers, they always prefer a sequel or remake when possible.
Also.....(FacePalm)
shia lebouef for tetsuo.
the final battle between the two - how to erase anime fan's souls
They already had their way with dragonball.. wasn't that enough?
as we're on the topic, is hollywood planning an Eva live-action too?
pls god, let them say no!!
someone, please nuke hollywood
Zac Efron is fine on the condition that he rides a pink vespa in the movie.
If their going to screw it up then they might as well do it royally. That way they might be able to contend for razzies.
@yuriphoria
I see your point, but think about it for a minute.
If the anime is great, they can sully it by making a bad movie. >but< if the anime suckz anyway it's impossible to ruin it. Instead it becomes likely that the new movie will be an improvement. They can change all that made akira awful, which is everything, and can come up with new ideas while only keeping the title to fuck with the braindead fans that actually liked the movie, which I haven't even seen, except you count sleeping to it as watching.
Long story short akira suckz and I'm prepared to passionately argue this point until nothing makes sense anymore.
Yall are all hating. When has Eforn ever done a bad movie? He is epic enough to make this Movie amazing. Akira is too good of a plot for ANYONE to mess up.
a train wreak, you don't want to stare but cant look away.
you know it will be bad god god damn if you wont watch it out of morbid curiosity.
"are about to rape another great anime"
hmm
Usually I would agree, but I think akira is one of the worst anime ever, so it will be kind of a challenge to fuck it up. Chances are they make something like a movie out of akira, so that would be the first improvement to the pile of shit that is the anime. PG-13..eh? So there won't be as much gore which leaves us with room for a plot. Second improvement. Heck, maybe they turn it into a love comedy. That would be somewhat hilarious.
There is another bright site to this. In the future I can pick on all those fanboys telling them how the hollywood movie surpasses the anime. Of course, it will be lying, as I never actually watch this new movie, but lies are nothing but creatice truths so that will somehow work out.

Hell they rape regular movies as well not just anime... it's really sad and old >.> I wish it would just stop
It's trolling.
Zac Efron as Kaneda? Yeah sure.
The same way they said he was going to play Kira from Death Note 4 years ago, and we're still waiting.
OH, and not to mention Shinji from Evangelion.
Justin Bieber will be Shinji so we can both cry and laugh our asses off.
Wait, I think you're on to something here. Pathetic, wimpy, 'secretly' gay. Justin Beiber is the perfect Shinji!
I don't see the prob. Zac Efron is actually a much better actor as everyone makes him out to be.
He even went far enough to insult his Disney career on Saturday Night Live.
No...Unlike half the other actors like Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner, etc. Zac Efron CAN act, and be quite the character.
And Te thought of remaking such is...No, just no.
Now if the headline read "Justin Bieber", or "Robert Pattinson" then i'd be wanting to punch a hole in the wall.
you'd probably agree he'd be good enough to take oprah's role in a remake of 'the color purple'... hollywood has no shame =.=
lmao too bad its gonna be a PG-13 movie. QQ no boobs or bitches getting punched in the face.
i LoLd hard
I don't know, if Kristen Stewart was the girl in the scene where they beat her and rip her shirt off I might actually pay to see that.
Tell me about crap. I'm trying to get rid of the trauma of watching Dragonball Evolution till now. Even the psychiatrist is having trouble with me...
Not to mention Kaneda doesn't look like some sort of homo. No offense meant to the homos but it's true...
Not just animes, games also. Look at Resident Evil.
Well, it seems that the movie makers have never watched the anime and read the manga. So they aren't doing their job very well. If it was other jobs like being some scientist, reseacher, then you would be already fired, because lack of research and dedication!
I agree, Hollywood is smelling pretty fishy these days.
As to the topic itself, was anyone really expecting anything from the adaptation in the first place?
I think they're only making adaptions so that fans of the anima/manga will pay to watch the movie and complain about it later.
And those that are not fans of the manga/anime can claim it was better than the manga/anime.
And those retards that are yet to discover manga and/or anime will watch it for other reasons.
Such as Zac Efron being in it...
I would be willing to give Efron a chance as long as he had a good read, I mean he might actually be a good actor that's not had a serious role yet to show off what he can do (although my gut tells me this is not the case.) At the same time, Hollywood just absolutely DOES NOT know what to do with an anime property. I think if you're going to have a good anime-to-wetern-film conversion it's probably going to come from some sort of drama and we won't see good adaptations of the sci-fi action stuff until... well, until they can make good sci-fi action films again in general I guess.
Exactly!! It's turning into a fish.
When a victim of rape pleads to the rapist to "PLEASE STOP, IT HURTS!"
Does the rapist stop? no.
So... Do you think that Hollywood, who's getting such a boner raping what we love, will stop because we tell it to stop? Didn't think so...
So remember kids. Hollywood is a rapist.
No, Hollywood is a business that makes bad artistic decisions. I don't care how the fuck much you love Akira, but nothing that could be done to a story could ever equate to being raped.
You're a bad person.
WRYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!
Call me crazy, but a movie where a character yells 'ZAC EFRON!' sounds hilarious.
But yeah. Like with the Watchmen, the only 100% legit way to experience Akira is through Graphic Novels and in some ways, the anime movie.
I seriously doubt they can possibly capture the dark, Japanese utilitarian dystopia like Akira so perfectly did.
More hilarious than Goku in DragonBall Evolution. I don't think so!
Zac Efron is an asshole...
Perfect!
This is.....terrible.
Hollywood needs to stop messing with anime. They always ruin it
Well, as revenge the Ironman anime is getting the same treatment the Americans have given to the anime/manga titles. But still the Japanese, even when they try to screw it up, it stays halve decent, unlike the Hollywood stuffs, e.g. Dragonball Evolution, the Street Fighter movie, King of Fighters etc., unwatchable. Next Wolverine to screw up?
Where have all the screenwriters gone?
[This post has been removed due to a copyright claim by Motion Picture Ass. of America]
Akira with that HighSchool kid? SERIOUSLY?
Haha, you really got me this time!
Wait...
Why doesn't someone in Hollywood actually try to create a Cel-Animated original featured theatrical master piece much more better then Akira causing other countries' film makers wanting to live-action adapt it, instead of doing countless garabge adaptions and stupid cgi kiddy movies??
Anyone else agree
kill it with fire
