Oppai anime Sora no Otoshimono has not only somehow managed a second season, it is now to receive a movie adaptation.
Unlike the recently announced Strike Witches movie, the fan reaction appears very sceptical indeed, with many noting that lately the threshold for theatrical anime adaptation seems to have dropped rather sharply.
The reason is summed up in a recent interview with director Koji Masunari (Welcome to the Space Show, R.O.D) and author/script writer/mangaka Hideyuki Kurata (who wrote R.O.D):
Kurata: “The makers realised something. The cost of making a movie is not really different from that of making it for TV. But the DVD of a movie tends to sell better than that of a TV series. Everyone realised this about 4 years ago.”
Masunari: “Back when we started making movies a year ago there was an increase in the number of folks starting to make for cinema and not TV. Those are projects are starting to be completed so you’re seeing a constant increase in the number of movies coming out now. That’s why we’re seeing all these anime movies.
Kurata: “For example with Trigun the makers had just the right demographics lined up. And the customers are more willing to come to the cinemas. With One Piece, Gintama, Haruhi, Nanoha, etc, they’ve set the style of going to the cinema. Compared to movies, TV anime is discarded much more quickly.”

I'm happy.
Wait just a god damn minute.
You're telling me, they decided to do "a film" cause movie DVDs sell better?
Apart from the very obvious profit and greed that plays a role in this decision....
THAT MEANS WE GOTTA WAIT FOR GODKNOWS HOW MANY MONTHS BEFORE WE SEE IT????
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooo
Me too. At last, the good anime start getting movies. We got UBW, Disappearance and now SnO.
Yay. Now they just need to announce another season.
"The cost of making a movie is not really different from that of making it for TV. But the DVD of a movie tends to sell better than that of a TV series. Everyone realised this about 4 years ago.”
And before that, everyone just kept wondering where the hell Studio Ghibli got all that money from.
Well, when is everyone gonna realize that a single disc can hold more than two episodes?
This is relevant to my hobbies
For this sucky series? no thanks ¬¬
my body is ready :3
My body is fooding
Yeah this show needs a direct adaptation and more ACTION :3,, I expect a lot for the great action/story/and character in the movies just like UBW
Do we realy need an Sora no Otoshimono movie? Although I find the idea of a girl with a collar actually pretty good.
Yes we do, son.
I'm happy for the news, but not happy with how anime creators are only looking at the financial picture and they even seem ready to discard TV anime as a medium. They should bunker down and still try to deliver us quality anime. I hope it's not some strange anime future where TV anime is nonexistant and everything is in movie form.
So you're saying you somehow got "No more tv anime from now on" just from 2 people unrelated to this particular movie critising that they're only doing it for the money?
Sounds to me like two people who are butthurt for people discovering their magical formula for making money. Also, it helps getting people familiar with something by means that are available to a wide audience (such as tv) before making a movie about it.
I'm seeing this as, YAY more Sora No Otoshimono with probably some better explanation about what this "New World" is. Just a shame it will most likely not air outside of japan, and certainly not over here.
Sorry, but that's not how it is. There's more and more cases of anime opted out into a movie or OVA form instead of a TV series. It's just not these two cases. I can't understand why you're pinning this to me when there's clear examples left and right. I'm totally okay for OVA and movies like I said, but more directors are acknowledging that financial situation leads to less options to go into a full TV series instead. Which is understandable. It is totally reasonable. I am more WORRIED about this situation than pointing fingers.
Seems even the quality of anime movies is slowly declining
Define 'quality'.
define definition
stop arguing and fap!!
Define movies....sorry.
define "fap"
Fap, the sound produced by a chicken when it tries to fly.
That's flap.
That means I'm doing it wrong D=
Quality = moar angelic Nymph DFC
How is this evidence of declining quality? It's not like movie cash-ins are anything new, and this series is actually really good.
Yeah really, the fan service in it is quite mild they don't even show nipples, yet people continue to bitch about it only having fanservice when the comedy is quite good.
Well that came up from nowhere now ain't it? Somewhat unexpected.
same here
wooo more nymph is never a bad thing
Nymph or Ikaros alone would be win, both together is pure win.
And Astrea's suddenly a side character?
Tot they were the trinity angels....
Charli- erm, Tomoki's Angels...
Sohara's the one I feel sorry for, she gets hardly any attention now..
Everybody's getting a movie!! YOU get a movie! And YOU get a movie!! EVERYBODY'S GETTING A MOVIE!!!!
yeah, it sure seems like it XD
I'd rather have another season...
May i do something wrong, but i drop this bull shit at first minute?
Yes you do.
Holy @#$%!A movie!
Hope Tomoko appears
granted I do like this anime why the hell does it need a movie. A movie about a fan service anime with a so so plot seems stupid.
Are you retarded? No plot? The ruler of Synapse is waving at you and Chaos is giving you the finger.
Despite how plot related the series usually isn't, I actually like it when the plot shows up in the show. I'm assuming this movie would be more like those parts.
needs more yuri movies
A Sora no Otoshimono movie would be mandatory to stay for the closing credits -- best creative part of the TV show.
I vote for moe enka.
F*** YESSSS!!!
A movie!? are you serious?
oh yes!!! *happiness +10*
More of Ikaros, yaay. ^^
The movie will be focused on Hiyori with moe overload and awesome action.
