FF14 Update Pure Square Enix Quality

lalafell-by-humio.jpg

Square Enix’s latest Final Fantasy XIV update is showing the company’s usual forethought and attention to detail – the update adds a public “player history” feature which shows exactly when players were playing and what they were doing, with no option to turn it off.

Whilst on paper an innocuous addition, in practice the update handily exposes MMORPG addicted NEETs and employees sneakily playing on the job in violation of company policy, to say nothing of exposing the fact that most of the game’s “official players” quit weeks ago.

The update:

[Important Update Details]

General
– Implemented a “History” feature which displays a record of any achievements the character has accomplished in FINAL FANTASY XIV.
The page can be accessed by selecting the “History” option located under the “My Site” menu and also within the “Character” section.

Of course, it could be argued that Square Enix is doing employers a favour by allowing them to pinpoint slackers.

It is not however doing itself much of a favour – players exploring the feature quickly rumbled the showcase players who were enthusiastically shilling for the game:

Seiyuu Rina Katou logged in once on the 2nd of October and never again, and after writing about her experiences playing the game with such enthusiasm throughout the rest of the month…

square-enix-marketing-blunder-1.png

Mangaka Kayoko Saito wrote extensively about the game and drew 5 manga about it, but only played for 10 minutes:

square-enix-marketing-blunder-2.png

She also reported visiting places her play history reports she never got to…

Investigation of the rest of the “official players” assembled reveals most of them gave up playing weeks ago, perhaps their only honest act whilst endorsing the game.

Square... seriously... just... just give up already... you're just digging your grave deeper than it needs to be... I mean seriously you're just one step from destroying your best game franchise ever in my eyes... I loved Final Fantasy since I played VII and VIII as a kid... but now... I'm losing hope.

With trademark Toriyama art style lol. It wouldn't have mattered before, but after the much shit that SE dished out today, something like that would definitely instill a negative "those, that, and now this SE?" first impression

Amusingly, even through it's probably a typo, hero is quite correct in that Square/Enix are trying very hard at senpuku(潜伏), if failing miserably.

    潜伏[senpuku] - (n,vs) concealment; hiding; ambush; incubation
切腹[seppuku] - (n,vs) ritual suicide; disembowelment; seppuku; harakiri

I think Kenpachi should just go in there and put them all down.

Them fighting him is the same as Suicide anyway.

I would not be surprised if the game was shut down due to lack of money/players by the end of the year.

Just like All Points Bulletin was shut down too.

I am so resisting the urge to say anything "F" and "H" right now...

This game is now nothing more than a way for people (and employers) to know how much of an MMO enthusiast you are...

And no way to turn it off..?

    *shakes head in sadness*

Not only do you get a limited amount of hours to play with a bloody brutal curfew, now your privacy is exposed for all of the world to see...

The thing about Bioware's social site is that they implimented it PROPERLY so that you can choose who gets to see your achievements.

And the default setting is that only friends can see what your character has been doing in game.

Bioware's social site is an example of how to get it right, at least privacy wise.

And Bioware actually has an option to turn off those log updates in your social site profile.

Repeat what others are doing? Merge with facebook, put people's full names on the forums as a mandatory feature (Bliz Real ID) and cause their employees possible bodily harm after having all personal info released PUBLICALLY within an hour of revealing the full name?

I quit wow cuz they even THOUGHT of implementing such a feature. I was quite looking forward to ff14 since I didn't want anything to do with blizz games, and I've been a diehard FF fan since I played FF1 when I was real small.

This is quite a bad idea for one huge reason: privacy. Especially with the negative association gamers have in the business world.

Before this gets too lengthy, I'll finish. They're going with the flow. Blizz tried to do it, lost about 500k customers overnight. I know of at least 240 people on my server ALONE who cancelled their subscriptions immediately.

It's a bad idea to implement something like this in the world as it is. Unfortunately, I won't be buying this game either, sadly. I'll have to stick to single-player RPGs since MMOs are being infected by Facebook and stupidity.

Why are the online ones considered parts of the main franchise when the rest of the games focus on a story? MMO's and stories definitely do not go hand in hand, even if they're still RPGs. I wish they'd named XI and XV "Final Fantasy Online I" and "Final Fantasy Online II." I mean nothing against either of the games, since I haven't played them, but I just wish they had moved the titles around.

"Why are the online ones considered parts of the main franchise when the rest of the games focus on a story?" - " I mean nothing against either of the games, since I haven't played them"

Ok, talking about FFXI specifically, its story, or its set of stories (due to having several expansions) are some of the best in the FF series. Vana'diel as a world is the most complex and complete of any of their FF games, this is thanks to the 8 years of constant content updates, something that cannot be achieved on an offline game (maybe through DLC nowadays). FFXI is the most story-centric MMO game there is, and it has a better story than many of the other FF games. Most of their characters aren't as strong as the offline FF, but they are well presented and developed. Music is great as usual, graphics are very good even for today MMO standards (PC version, not PS2 or 360 version tho), job system is one of the best of the whole series, battle system is not the cup of tea for everyone but it does blends the menu based combat typical of FF games with a MMO style.

About XIV, I currently play it, but at the moment there is not much good to talk about it (besides the music and the job system), I'm willing to give it time to get sorted out and have more content added. So far the game is very flawed to say the least, but if FFXI is any indication, within 1 year it will be something totally different (than when it launched) and really worth to play it.

I think they have already realized how fucked they are and are just trying to see how far they can can go before they are forced to shut the game down. Probably to see just what they can get away with so they know what to include in their next game.

One step? they pretty much took that step by releasing FFXII, FIV is just mutilating the series beyond all recognition.

So they aim for the casual gamers, that only play like 10 minutes per month? Chasing all the hardcore players away must be the first step to achieving that goal.

Actually, there is only a 1 in 20 chance of automatic failure on attack rolls and saving throws. Furthermore, a 1 is only an automatic failure, not a critical failure -- those sorts of things are optional house rules.
