Aya Hirano: “I Have a Brain Tumour”

the-head-of-aya-hirano.jpg

Aya Hirano has revealed she has a brain tumour.

The revelations come by way of the seiyuu news wire, Twitter:

I’ve had chronic migraine since I was in middle school, and they found a tumour! That sometimes causes trouble so there are all kinds of restrictions I’m under.

[…]

Don’t worry – of course not all people with migraines have tumours. Mine is an adenoma of the pituitary gland [a benign tumour in the brain]. I have to go to the hospital every year for a checkup to make sure it’s not going malign.

[…]

Sometimes the tumour presses on my optic nerve and I go blind or stop being able to speak, but I’m OK! I’m used to it!

[…]

I have medicine so it’s OK! In middle school I was told there was surgery I could take, but I gave up on it because I’d end up looking like a mummy with my head bandaged up and they’d have to break my nose to do it.

I was told my voice would change too. Having just started as a seiyuu I was not happy about my voice suddenly changing.

[…]

At first, at school my speech became weird and my memory was messed up, so it was a big deal, but that was 10 years ago.

I’ve grown used to it. I know how to deal with it.

[…]

Oh, so you can do the surgery with a laser now!?

But it’s not urgent so there’s no rush. I’m OK. I’m going to the hospital annually.

Well, I was busy so I didn’t go for 2 years… this year my health broke down so I went to all kinds of hospitals.

Whilst this unfortunate tale has likely increased sympathy for her (although not on 2ch), and possibly explains certain unusual episodes in career, there are some who have noted the timing of the revelation with scepticism, coming as it does just after she committed the seiyuu equivalent of suicide.

Benign tumors are relatively harmless if they are kept in check. Still nothing to joke about, though. I hope she keeps well.

Aya seems to think it's ok to talk about all sorts of private matters she had better kept to herself.

"Sometimes the tumour presses on my optic nerve and I go blind or stop being able to speak, but I’m OK! I’m used to it!"

While the blind part is an advanced condition (which will be permanent, and doesn't go on and off - there's no 'sometimes'), adenoma of the pituitary gland does not affect speech ability (suddenly can't talk -> no such thing).

    She's lying.

Nuke China? Is that not sick?

    Loli jokes? I mean really?

People giving out "Darwin Awards" for accidental deaths or suicides? Is that not sick?

    The hypocrisy is overwhelming.

I find all the above rather funny as well but even I know they're questionable in taste.

    @ Anon 20:36
You might be a medical student but don't know everything.
I have friends who suffer from migraine from time to time and they told me that when it's bad, they really can't see for some time and if they do, they have to shut in some dark room because they can't stand any sort of light because it's too painful. Not mention sounds.
    It's possible.

    @Rena:

The case with migraine is true, my friend suffers from the same and ends up skipping a whole bunch of classes. However, migraine is different from if tumours in brain. These two cases are unrelated.

what Anon 20:36 said is true though. You don't have to be a med student to know that the pituitary has absolutely nothing to do with speech. As for sight impairment, I can only imagine it'd be a rather seriously case in which the tumour is fairly big. On the other hand, I don't see how a tumour close to the pituitary would affect optical nerves. But I'm in medical physics, so I don't know that much.

Also, benign tumours should be removed if it's in the brain, my prof told us this yesterday.

Med students think they know everything... *sigh*

Pituitary tumour can result in impediment to speech development and pattern. In some rare cases it learns to an underdeveloped Wernicke's area which leads to on/off speech pathology.

Is Aya lying? I don't know. But what she said is physically possible.

from what i gather, vision loss is only permanent if it is CONSTANTLY pushing on the optic nerves or the nerves have been damaged. because its normal size doesn't do this, it isn't permanent

maybe the tumor swells a little with high blood pressure or elevated hormone levels, causing it to press against the nerve and causing temporary vision problems... this is just a guess though :/

seems Mr. Med student needs a new career choice XD

    I'm Anon 20:36,

@Rena, like what Anon 21:39 said, migraine is a different story from pituitary tumour.

@Everyone, I'm sorry if I sounded patronising by saying I'm medical student; just saying where my source is. I don't mean any air of arrogance. >.<"

@TenguSan, the link appears to be non-existent. But anyway, what I mean by not affecting speech ability, is that her speech area in the brain is not affected by it (in typical cases,of course). However, if the tumour is functioning, it'll affect body growth and that includes the tongue. So, indirectly, it does affect the way she speaks cos her tongue would be beefy (which doesn't seem to be the case).

She looks perfectly fine for someone who had pituitary tumour since middle school. Look at Andre the Giant and Big Show.

No matter how I look at it, she's lying. Like, really, man.

"I'm a medical student therefore I know this." Right. My friend is a medical student and he doesn't know shit so I don't believe you even slightly. Medicine isn't just knowledge, it's also experience. Something a student has none of.

If you said you were a practicing neurologist I might believe you.

Also assuming there is a benign tumor putting some pressure on her pituitary that makes it far from 'mostly harmless'. Pretty sure a benign tumor can really fuck things up depending on where it is.

If she's lying than what the fuck.

there's a flaw in your logic. as another anon said: "Pituitary tumour can result in impediment to speech development and pattern. In some rare cases it learns to an underdeveloped Wernicke's area which leads to on/off speech pathology."

Besides, even if that isn't the case in her situation, loss of speech can be a purely psychological reaction as well.

don't write it off as impossible just because it doesn't say anything about it in your textbook.

Well, as someone who suffers from chronic migraines, I can certainly vouch for losing sight sometimes. I also know of several other people who have the same issue. I've yet to hear of a migraine that makes people unable to talk. Certainly I've heard of ones that people won't talk, because noise fucking sucks, but not one that STOPS people from talking. Not saying it isn't possible, just saying thats seriously seriously unlikely. Either way, migraines suck, would not wish those on anyone.

Actually, it isn't really serious. Since it isn't malign, it has no real threat to life. It can be removed by simple Lazar surgery, which is pretty much guaranteed to be treated entirely. There is some possibility that the nasal bone might get altered which leads to voice change.

Though, I'm suspicious about her going blind and stuffs... nevertheless, it's huge timing miss for her.

Stumbled on this article on the net and couldn't help but throw in a comment...

First of all, don't write off the medical students/doctors in terms of knowledge of advanced medicine. It is fair enough to question our diagnoses, but to completely state that we are wrong because a random questionable web-page say otherwise or because of something you've heard from a friend of a friend is on the verge of hypocricy. We are after all the experts in our field, just as you are in yours. Our knowledge is in this field composed of studies with up to thousands or hundreds of thousands of patients and the sum of all those states the normal symptoms of a syndrom/illness. Granted, there are some who have unlikely symptoms but as the saying goes, "when you hear the sound of hooves, dont assume its a zebra."

As for the statement of the Miss in question...it is highly unlikely that a pituitary gland tumor will affect the speech directly. It can however do it indirectly through for example the interference with the secretion of Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) and indirectly cause hypo- or hyperthyroidism, which then will effect the function of various brain-centres and, among others, have an effect on the speech...she doesn't look like such a patient though.

A pituitary tumor can also cause migraine, pressure symtoms (if big enough) and various endocrine dysfunctions as well, which can then affect the speech, but that is all the result of secondary or tertiary effects and definitely NOT a stand-alone symptom with only headaches and speech impairment.
A sewere migraine triggered by the tumor can temporarily affect some of the critical centers controlling speech, but again it is unlikely that it is a stand-alone symptom.

So is she telling the truth, lying or just suffering from a histrionic personality disorder...Too little information to give a correct diagnosis, but she is probably telling the truth about the tumor and then assumes that every other symptom she has is correlated to it.

My younger brother has had two cancerous tumors removed from his back from the time we were children. He's developed a terribly sick sense of humor about it.

We had an event like this:

My brother: "Hey, when I tap the cavity where my tumor was, it sounds like a drum! If I get a few more, I can be my own percussion orchestra!"

Me: "Shut the fuck up, man. Please..."

And then my mother started crying.
