Microsoft: “Kinect Will Outsell The Wii”

kinect-xbox-360.jpg

Microsoft is bombastically proclaiming Kinect launch sales will beat those of the Wii, and just for good measure says it will beat the iPad too.

Microsoft’s top PR flack Aaron Greenberg is bullish on the controller’s prospects in more ways than one:

“We haven’t given any projections beyond this holiday, but this will be the largest launch we’ve ever had as a business.

We’ll definitely sell more sensors than the Wii sold when it launched or the Xbox 360 sold when it launched.”

The Wii sold just over 500,000 units in its first (US) week of sales, and nearly 3 million worldwide in its first year.

Rather less bombastically, another Microsoft figure has it that Kinect will “blow away” the iPad, a surprisingly meaningless comparison given the tablet is an order of magnitude more expensive and serves a completely different market.

Absent was any talk of its arch-competitor, the PlayStation Move – Sony has announced sales of 1.5 million in Europe during the first month, but cannily refused to announce proper figures for North America, only saying that it shipped 1 million units to retailers in both North and South America, a red flag if ever there was one.

Apparently Microsoft's marketing morons (alliteration that fits well) never went to Elementary School and never understood the concept of jinxing yourself. Although I'm sure they've hired a team to take care of the sheer amount of knocking on wood it will take to balance such a statement.

Some people do research before making a purchase. I was specifically looking for a laptop with XP when Vista kicked in.

I did the same, but that worked only in the beginning. My last laptop was still delivered with Vista. First thing I did was install W7.
I guess 99% of the Vista sales came bundled with hardware, and at least half was never used.

Bought an xbox... and within half a year they officially announced the 360. A year after that the xbox wouldn't turn on.

Bought a laptop in 2007, the year that Vista was being heavily promoted as THE OS. Then news came out about 7.

Ah yes, the joys of being a paying beta tester for MS.

I actually sold a copy of Vista I got for free on ebay for like $150.

And my parents bought a computer on Vista's launch day, and they couldn't find one with XP anywhere.

Having had Vista for two years and never once had an issue, I have to believe most of its 'problems' are grossly exaggerated. It is worse than XP or Win7, I won't deny that. What it seems like to me though, is that people complained about it for the sake of complaining about it. While it did have issues, most of those issues only applied to the business/corporate level. Everyday people complaining about it only really complained about it because their friend's friend's cousin in the IT field hated it. Just my two cents.

That aside, I will of course be glad to finally upgrade to Win7 when I build my new system in the coming months. Why would I pay to upgrade to Win7 on my current PC when Vista is working perfectly fine?

It's not so much Vista is bad, but it's not good. It was basically a prettier looking Windows XP that ate up more resources. It didn't really give any new functionality compared over XP for the extra RAM it required to run. There was no reason for you to upgrade to Vista at all and in fact it would probably hurt more to upgrade than to stay on XP. It was a fact that pretty much every tech expert agreed on.

    @ TenguSan, you said:
"i wouldn't be surprise if XP FAR outsold vista, because alot of people, including me, actually bought XP for their new Vista Op PCs. XD"

Vista never grew past 20% market share. It was a rather long 3 years between vista and Win7.

As Yden said... Vista offered nothing really. You needed a lot of RAM and CPU power to get the same out of an XP box. Win7 is nicer to use, simple... but its not perfect. Oh well.

XP is still 60% market share.
Win7 surpassed Vista Market share in 9 months! What vista couldn't do in 3 years.

MS recently pulled ALL XP licenses off the market. Obviously, outlasting vista... again.

Worldwide- Mac is still 5~6%, generating a ton of sales. Linux is at 1%.

Why would it be 'American marketing'? Didn't everybody hear the same exact words from Sega, Nintendo, Atari, Sony, etc etc etc?

They're marketing a game product. Selling it is their JOB. To get so bent out of shape by it is ridiculous. Let the sales and the quality of the games speak for themselves.

They just need to sell 500,000 and it will be true, considering more then 500,000 people own an Xbox they might be able to out sell Wii at launch because they already established a player base of over 500,000

However... They wont even get close to outselling Wii in the long run... only at launch do they have the slight chance

They won't "definitely" sell more at launch, but it is possible given that this is an accessory for an already existing console, compared to the Wii which is a console itself (as much as it hurts to say it) and therefore a greater investment on the part of the buyer.

Casual Xbox gamers. Not casual gamers in general.

And of course the kinect will outsell the Wii, it's not a damn console, it's just equipment for the xbox. It's more realistic to compare it to a game than a console.

Whether or not kinect will actually sell this well isn't really the main point, it's more the fact that even their PR hype claims actually set a pretty low standard when you think about it.

Where did you come up with 500,000? The iPad has already sold 3 million copies -- and that was just within the first 80 days.

Microsoft is in a investor-fueled dreamland. When word comes out about software flaws (they're not giving advance copies to reviewers, remember?), this thing will fail worse than Vista and Windows ME put together.

It goes Move, Wii, Kinect in the terms of "power" and "accuracy" with the motion control so far, but Kinect's has gotten nothing but VERY bad reviews and reports that it's almost worthless.

Not to forget the aspect of there being no buttons or controlling mechanism with it, screwing over 95% of game genres..

I know you'll all give me negatives for this, but I'll still say it anyway...

Microsoft, if you create really hardcore/explicit games that utilizes the Kinect's full potential like maybe a simulated anime snuff game or a fully interactive eroge...

Or at the very least really violent games, then there is no hope of you EVER topping off Nintendo (who have awesomely violent and bloody Wii games like "No More Heroes" and "Mad World")~

Party, Family, and Sports games can only do so much to a population hungry on much more...Entertaining games~

Well, Greenberg forgets there was a huge shortage of Wii consoles at the time, and the Kinect thing does have a much lower price tag than the Wii since it's just an accessory (but still the Kinect is too expensive for an accessory)!

now, lets be honest here, if the kenect worked, it would easily outsell the wii, as its a more immersive and a better casual experience than the wii.

now that is if the thing worked. which for the most part it doesn't.

now i believe that the it doesnt work is more of a software than hardware problem, so its possible for most of its problems to be patched in firmware, or just game software.

Nintendo will soon release the Wii successor, probably next year. Powerwise it will be on par with PS3 / Xbox360, maybe even better. That's not hard to do with todays technology, so I guess it will be quite cheap. If Nintendo doesn't fuck up (like trying to charge an exorbitant price) it could very well rule the casual market just like the Wii did for some years to come.

no, Nintendo isn't going to do that. well they will soon, but thats not it. take a look at this.

Head Tracking for Desktop VR Displays using the WiiRemote (youtube video name)

they could do that, it would give a near 3d experience to non 3d tvs, and if they combine that with a 3d tv, than hell, you not only have real 3d for those with the tv, you have body moving that even the better consoles fail to do or do right right now.

i honestly believe that they could make the whole console a head mount, or make it close to a head mount as possible. imagine a 3d raceing game, where you are in the drivers seat and you look around with the head mount, and it almost never breaks illusion, because in the game you are waring a helmate, think metroid prime.
