Eminent Domain, Chinese Style

Unsurprisingly, the dark side of China’s construction boom is very dark indeed – whilst tenants in the way of new construction projects are at least now notionally able to refuse to sell up (chiefly because rates may be far below market value), what awaits them may not be pleasant.
In this case, in Kunming, the tenant (an 83-year-old woman) refused to sell, and in an effort to force her out developers levelled the plot around her home and dug a 2m deep moat around her dwelling.
Apparently a more direct eviction method is not out of the question:
Another famous case involving a holdout left on top of a less than reassuring hill:
Yet another rather bizarre example, this time from Beijing, showing an old style townhouse which has apparently somehow managed to refuse the overtures of civil planners (although in all fairness most western nations probably would not allow a holdout to impede a public project to this extent):
Not all are so lucky; in some cases demolitions still proceed without consent or compensation, leaving occupants homeless:
The style of negotiation on display bears some rather striking parallels to recent Chinese diplomacy – China’s neighbours would likely do well to take note.

as for a chinese,i really do not satified with our government.
but sometimes, the public has no choice,we are so small in this giant country.
being a chinese is not so easy to survive in this country.
in china, we have no rights when we are against the government,
Don't worry mang, China will be the next superpower country.
i hope so,but chinese government only think about how to rule the pulblic, not the world.
Which is probably for the better.
They might controll 1 billion already, but they can't controll 6 more.
LoL. We can't even get projects approved in the US without protecting some endangered turtles or some other dumb wildlife.
Fuck you ya cocksucking piece of shit.
Waiting for old Chinese woman to tie a million balloons to her house.
(+1 if you get reference)
This is true. In China, your homes are just in the way of the next railway or road expansion. No matter how much help you try to ask from the government and how much you refuse the meager compensation they offer, they will resort to doing this to you.
Even if you did accept the compensation, your likely to end up in the suburbs with no water or electricity and end up living in a home a quarter of the size as your previous home with taxes. You will be forced to start over.
That's why people should look for historic backgrounds of places before moving in. Having history increases the land's value in the eyes of the government and they may actually help.
And the examples above aren't the worst. Some Chinese companies will remove grave stones in graveyards and turn the place into an apartment complex.
Cut the Chinese population by half and the problem will be gone.
They already have a low birth rate.
Well...at least when the zombie apocalypse comes, she has a moat to protect her home.
Zombies can't drown...
But they can't swim either.
Nothing is impossible for China.
I'm awfully surprised this website hasn't been blocked in China yet.
You sure it hasn't? That's really a surprise.
this site is still not banned in china
from a chinese
such a moe site like this is nothing to do with politics in leaders' mind.
I guess outrageous evictions like this aren't of any political load, but I know for a fact that things like China's low-quality architecture (which has been exposed on this site several times) are considered state secrets. Posting picture of that on the internet can earn you a jail sentence in China itself, so it seems logical that sites hosted outside China would at least get added to the Golden Shield's blacklist if they contain pictures like that.
The Chinese government does not find this immoral? Geez, almost makes you appreciate the scumbags we've got in office.
Umm...most of these things were done by private developers (except the road splitter guy). Our government just forces you out with "construction safety laws", while theirs just forces you out with inconvenience. Bunch of cocksuckers either way.
I'd rather the inconveniences, because at least that legally allows you to fight fire with fire.
Fighting the law would just leave you dead on the street.
honestly, this kinda makes me wanna destroy any eminent domain laws that exist in my country. It may seem like China goes way to far, but this is just a small jump from what happened in the Killdozer incident. http://www.nndb.com/people/527/000064335/ this is something I do not want the government to be able to do, of this I'm sure!
All developed countries live with the luxury of not having to go through this because their infrastructure is more or less already established. Few people today have lived through the birth pangs of urbanization in the west, when the rights of the poor were meant very little in the face of big money. The mafia made their early fortunes evicting tenants and leaseholders as well as intimidating small landowners for the benefit of the property tycoons. We look back with disdain at those times (if we even look back at all) but very few appreciate that you can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs.
Impressive. He should've completely demolished the townhall, though.
A grenade or a Molotov bomb is enough also a booby trap explosive like "Minnie" May Hopkins(of Gunsmith Cat) rig her home with explosive now that can give those scum run for they're money and some casualties before they get what they want.
Still making fun of China?
Not picking on Russia?
Is it cause you know Japan got humiliated by Russians twice?
Soon it will be China's turn.
http://news.xinhuanet.com/english2010/world/2010-11/02/c_13586080.htm
Dam straight. You guys pick on China despite faults in Japan's own borders.
How bout Japan's high suicide rates? Wanna show some pictures of those poor people?
Yeah.
Chineses are so serious and creepy
I bet patriotism is overflowing...
Why are there so many posts about China in this website, i don't want to read about china, this site is beginning to look more like a chinese hate site.
lol
why do people hate chinese government so much while all they do is oppressing the chinese...because they have limited budget while US invade other countries to steal their resources so their citizen can have comfortable life
the funny part is the citizen of the world like to show the negative thing that chinese government did to their own citizen but the citizen of the world tend to racist toward the chinese when the chinese come to their countries or call chinese names or chinks when they talk to chinese.....
I think picture #9 is Photoshopped! If you look closely, you can see the brush strokes!
Beats the US, where if you hold out, they just rezone your property and force you out by law. Then take your land and through careful bureaucratic processes, resell it at below market prices to developers.
This of course, after they offer your land to you for lower than market value (often trying to give you the price it was worth in the 50's.)
This happened in a nearby city that was growing. Lots of old farms, with not a lot of money to defend themselves. They got rezoned, and eminent domain was claimed on their land for use for the public good.
Public good being for use for a private entity to profit off of.
This bullshit about developers offering unfair or below market prices to the holdouts doesn't stand to reason.
Look at the size of the construction sites that they have cleared. There would have been at least 20-30 more households there originally that the developers have already bought out. To double or even triple the offer for the last holdout would only mean a 10% increase in total land acquisition cost, which is an insignificant price for the convenience of being able to smoothly proceed with the project. Most of these holdouts however demand exorbitant prices for the chance of a quick fortune just by sitting on their ass.
Thats how a country can progress so quickly !!! There is no obstacles =)
that's a wide land, they can built some new houses there, sadly that won't be the case.
Why don't we, as a civilized union of nations, just glass China (and surrounding monkey-led countries like North Korea & Myanmar), Sub-Sahara Africa, & Persia already? These backward, back-washed backwater, 13th century rejects are holding the progress of the rest of the world back by their incompetent existence alone.
Or hell, just assassinate their entire leadership structure and make it look like the citizens were the ones who got fed-up with the bullshit & did it.
So, Artfact... what about Japan's butthurt about Medvedev visiting the Kurils? Too insulting for ya?
Japan is so buttranged, that even sankakucomplex wont post about this, but instead some minor housing issue in China to divert their anger.
Japan fears Russia. Weaboos wont even dare to speak out against them in racist manner, unlike against the Chinese.
Why won't Japanese protest yet?
cause they're pussies like they always been
I want a moat around my house too!
Similar situation in Seattle, carried through to the logical conclusion:

Ah, yes, Seattle; known to its suburban neighbors as The Democratic Peoples Republic of The Emerald City.
I don't know which one's bizzare, the cute lil house or the FBI-looking mobiles parking in front of it..
It's the entrance to an underground CIA facility.
Killmotor Hill. Now, it's time to build a money bin.
Apparently a more direct eviction method is not out of the question:
That's a freaking bullet proof window damn it!! - tenant
In all rationality, why didn't the Chinese government simply kill them? It's not like they care, and they could simply cover it up with one cent excuses, not to mention it would cost a lot less. And it's not like their families or friends could do anything about it....
All they needed to do was send a few hitmen inside the building and it would be over.
I'm not saying this is morally right, but it is confusing, given how little the Chinese government has cared about it's own people and environment in the past.
Private developers. I think the only government project is the house sitting in the middle of the road. Chinese developers are no more shady than US developers, but we get better construction quality since the US has stricter building codes.
Maybe the government isn't as barbaric as you assume?
They did it for the lulz
personally they could be doing these "humane" tactics out of laziness?
Who says the government is the only group that builds things?
nothing in china gets done without government approval? though the same could be said about the U.S. >_>
