akiko-uemura-rip.jpg

The classmates who drove a 12-year-old girl to hang herself with the scarf she knitted as a gift for her mother with their bullying attended her funeral and delivered a tearful eulogy, but made no mention of the cause of her death.

120 people attended the funeral of Akiko Uemura, including her entire class of 38 – the very class which drove her to suicide by excluding her and saying her Filipino mother was a “gorilla” and so was she.

The child selected as class representative gave a tearful address – “I’ll never forget the time we spent together since you transferred in.” His address pointedly avoided mentioning the cause of her death – “It’s very sad when someone suddenly passes away. I hope she rests in peace.”

The principal repeated his innocent platitudes: “We put you through an ordeal at school. I swear to Akiko that this will never happen again.”

Her father was exceptionally gracious where the children were concerned, telling her “You were all alone at school, but today everybody came for you.” He was less restrained when addressing the teachers – he angrily told them “Please give me back my daughter!”

Although the media carefully avoids the macabre spectacle of a class of bullies attending the funeral of the girl they drove to suicide, 2ch is less sanguine:

This is chilling.

You lot were the ones who killed her!

They’ll never forget they killed her is what they mean. What kind of black joke is this?

If you had so many happy memories together she wouldn’t have killed herself.

What utter hypocrisy.

Why would you have a class of bullies attend her funeral? Is her father crazy?

He was giving them one last chance to apologise for what they did to her.

He knows the faces of the children who killed his daughter – you know what comes next.

The worst one is the father who married a Fillipino woman!

You’re another elementary schooler?

They called her a gorilla and tormented her to death – they better not forget this. I’ll never forget this school killed a person.

When these kids grow up, when they have their own children, they’ll remember seeing the father here. Keep blaming yourselves!

They wouldn’t even eat dinner with her! Cute kids.

That’s probably just what the teacher had them say.

Shameless.

Having the kids who drove her to suicide attend her funeral and deliver a tearful eulogy – what an astounding farce.

If all those kids were doing was calling her names and refusing to approach her then it was a paradise compared to my primary school where classmates kept beating me all day, stole my stuff and seriously almost killed me once by trying to push me over a ledge. (I'm not lying.)

Kids are monsters, born evil. Just look at how babies demolish block towers. It's all thanks to community and civilization that we curb those tendencies but unfortunately it channel those negative behavior into what the rest of society permit like racism.

@Darkrockslizer what kind of fucking school did you go to? I never recall being bullied in my school partly due to the fact I live in California and when people did bully me I'd go along with it and then of course the fact that I was seen as a Bipolar lunatic. If I didn't live in such a yuppie area and got antagonized incessantly I'd probably be fighting any bully and kill or be killed.

Fact that drove the girl to suicide is probably because she hated herself rather than accept that her mother was Fillipino. But you must admit she would have a striking difference compared with any girl in her class thats pure Japanese.

Oh, I see you are the one who voted me down. Very well then.

You see, you probably never had such a thing as "gangs" in your school. It's when if you're the smallest kid in the class and a gang member starts to pick up on him, and the small kid hits back, then the whole gang arrives to help their comrade, grab the smaller one's arms and legs and hold him tightly while the guy beats the crap out of him, then everybody kicking the little kid whole he's churning up on the floor.

Let just see how they would feel in the next coming years when they grown up. Will they happy and proud about making their friend commit suicide.
Common people, if they come to show their faces at her funeral, it's means they have courage to face their crimes. It's not easy to show up on someone whom u killed on another day and look at his/her family, u know.

@Maderlulz wait... what? did you just contradict yourself there? "I dont recall being bullied" + "people did bully me" = lolwut? and being in california doesnt change the fact that there are still going to be douchebags around... you must have attended an extremely odd school.
bullying is a normal part of childhood, but when it crosses certain lines, it becomes a major problem and can cause major permanent physical and/or psychological harm.
children are kind of like feral humans in a way, apparently humans are unable to comprehend the existence of other people and understand that they are like itself until about the age of 7, until then, its "me me me me me, others exist only to further my happiness at the present moment", and some never are able to comprehend it ever, those particular kinds of people are called "sociopaths" if you didnt know.
my usual response to "bullying" when i was a kid was to reflect it right back in a more subtle manner, or later when i expanded my list of english curse words, with a nice clean "fuck you, i dont give a shit" if im not in the mood to deal with it. eventually i got to the point where i could just make many people snap and fall apart if they tried anything.
eh... at this point, "bullying" is more of just being a tremendous flaming dickish-douche-troll, and such people are either ignored or pounded into the ground by the crowd.
@Darkrockslizer well, her treatment was likely almost all psychological along with some physical abuse, so its not quite the same as what you described your situation to be. being physically beaten is much different than being psychologically tormented.

when i was in school the only people who bullied me were about 3 years older than me. one day they were messing with me on the ol' school bus and i stood up without a word and punched the smaller of the two in the face. when i saw him crying, i realized that they weren't an unstoppable force. i got in trouble. my dad gave me the thumbs up when i told him the story and said i did the right thing.

because i am a nice person, i felt bad for the kid when i saw him crying. the next day i was on the bus (the following monday), i apologized to him and we became friends. not best friends but i would talk to him like all the others on the bus.

i had an older brother who was a bit of a wild card, but i didn't want to be the little sissy who needed protecting. so i never used by brother as a shield.

hey man, thats a tough situation to be in. i can't relate to your situation but i had a friend in a similar situation. his name was daniel. he was always being messed around with by the football players. he would even go so far as to take alternate routes to lunch just to avoid antagonism. he would tell me about it and i only ever saw it just as they were walking away and he was on the ground. he was too proud or scared to tell the coaches.
one day, i was walking through the gym on my way to lunch and saw the group of them messing with him. i walked up to the group and grabbed daniels shoulder and pulled him away, got in one of the guys face and said that if they were going to mess with him they were going to mess with me. some of the jocks i knew, not really friends, but guys who i was "cool with." they stood back and i could see in their eyes that they would not engauge me. the other two i didn't know, they were 1 or 2 grades higher than me. they had an uneasy look on their faces. the one who i confronted was in my grade but i didn't like him because he was loud and annoying.

because of an adrenaline high that spiked when he moved to say some kind of threat, i don't remember what he or i said, but i remember his face saying something with his teeth showing, i came back with something of a threat, and he turned around and walked out. his friends took the exit back to the changing rooms.

2 years later daniel and i had been friends and one day he just turned on me. he said he didn't want to be my friend. he started rolling with the mexican gang bangers. i knew them and 3 of them were my friends, but i guess daniel had problems at home and finally started getting some fiery confidence.

either way im just sad there was no big bear sized friend there to help you darkrockslizer.

@elc No I meant to say I do not recall any encounters of being bullied but the fact that I remember being pretty much a asocial loner most of my days in school. I seemed like a person that was unapproachable and still is that type of reserved taciturn person that prefers and knows how to be out of the loop of things. Hence why in middle school in Los Angeles and then in the Inland Empire even in a school for kids who were kicked out of school I managed to divert the attention of the "bully" and the gangs. I was seen as a crazy white boy. And oddly wouldn't that provoke them to mess with me more?

@Darkrockslizer No I don't vote anyone down in comments, sometimes I vote up because it was a funny or clever comment. I am envious of what happened to you though. As a sheltered white boy from California such things like that I've only seen in movies, TV shows or just a story on the news about a child who was savagely beaten and so on. You probably are thinking by my previous comment. It's a strange or an insensitive thing to say in response to your former bullying ordeals but that is what I decided to say in reciprocation to your bully story shared with us.

@Schrobby In fact I did, however it was rarely a fair right as others would join in. If I'd find one of the gang boys alone and fight him, he'd run away and be back later with the whole gang.

In the end, I got hurt much more if I fought back so it doesn't always work out that way.

But Anon got a point right there. For kids, what does nationality matter? "Your mother is a dirty foreigner", "Your mother is a whore" etc are basically just meant to insult the kid. Well, honestly, appearance doesn't have to do with the issue much either, but it could be used as a good way to insult someone. Why didn't they use it?

Basically bullying occurs when someone doesn't fit with a group for circumstances kept in the dark most of the time. I'd say it was the mindset, that foreigners are worthless that made the class isolate her. But I don't think this kind of bullying would be enough to drive someone to suicide. Unless, of course, everyone was in on it, including the teachers and other classes.

There really wasn't much in the way of describing exactly what kind of bullying was going on, so why are you guys assuming it was just being ignored? Schools are large places, people get ignored on a daily basis without any malicious intent.

Just imagine what kids can do to bully: steal books, steal uniforms, steal shoes, put tacks in uniforms, put tacks in shoes, stuff garbage in desks, push you down stairs, steal your money, etc. etc. Don't forget that children tend to be a lot more creative and lot less restrained than adults are, they can pull shit we can't even imagine anymore.

when it comes to women and how they look, obviously preferences vary dramatically, i just find it ugly for a large nose. and yes, i dont have a distinctly japanese sense of beauty either, since i dont particularly like pale women either.

But yeah, I'd have tried to gain influence in society so that I can ensure they never get anything in life to build from. Never enough money, never the same home for long, no right to go here and there... Not an easy task, but might be achievable. I'd rather them never be parents of children themselves though.
