nausicaa-of-the-valley-of-the-bath-by-bunta-kikumaru.jpg

Japan’s top cinema rag Kinema Junpo has published a list of the best anime movies of all time.

The ranking, covering Japanese animation and arrived at by a panel of 67 film critics and other experts:

1. Lupin the Third: Castle of Cagliostro

2. Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind

3. My Neighbor Totoro

4. Crayon Shin-chan: The Storm Called: The Adult Empire Strikes Back

5. AKIRA

6. Nagagutsu wo Haita Neko

7. [joint]
Urusei Yatsura 2
Taiyō no Ōji
The Tale of the White Serpent

10. [joint]
Summer Days with Coo
Summer Wars
Castle in the Sky
Grave of the Fireflies

With apologies to those expecting results in an easily comprehensible top 10 format.

As expected, Ghibli handily dominates the rankings, along with a number of classics from the last century.

This just proves that, top anime with ongoing series like One Piece oe Naruto don't produce any good movies :/

Having seen the most of the list I can pretty much agree on those titles making the top. An OVA based on famous series doesn't yet mean that it's an outstanding movie on its own.
Though my favorite has always been Spirited Away and I would have wanted to see it taking at least some spot.

Btw does anyone know where to torrent Summer Wars with English subs?

Miyazaki films with their Shinto references are always gonna dominate. Much in the same way that any film in the West with as much violence, profanity, and sex as it can handle in an hour and a half would. But I'm not gonna knock. Miyazaki films are classic. Princess Mononoke (the more blunt Shinto film), Kiki's Delivery Service (the more useless film), and Spirited Away are my favorites by him though... the rest of these I can't see how save for Akira, GotF, and Taiyō no Ōji. GitS needs to be up there, no doubt.

Well, the first movie is a classics no doubt. I didn't appreciate Gits2:Innocence at all. Solid State Society was good but not too outstanding on its own.

    Urusei Yatsura 2? and missing,
    - Spirited Away
    - Princess Mononoke
    - GITS
    - Millennium Acress or Paprika

Though I can't give the list a fail since just yesterday I was extolling how good Nausicaa is - so glad to see it at #2.

Ya know, this may sound strange, since I haven't even seen it yet, but somehow I expected Paprika up there. I really do need to watch that... but it's a very big surprise to see Summer Wars up with those titles and it's a recent one. *goes to watch it*

Paprika was good in the same way Ultraviolet was good, or the way a porno is good. Visually. The plot was just strong enough to hold together the action scenes.

It does not deserve to be on the list.

I can't comprehend how Oshii can be so acclaimed. He make very simple matters look more complex than they should be with long existential self-questioning sequences. And people praise him for this brain masturbation.
I mean, I love questionning, but sometimes it just becomes stupid.

I'm glad his works aren't in this top, it shows the judges weren't fooled.

And I agree with 13:03 anon, the TV shows are the real thing. They truly empathize the good aspect of Shirow's works.

Btw, the Anime or its movie quality depend on which studio responsible for it & for the sake of making money. It's not like the manga author make it.

Does smt have to be in top 10 to be consider good, what it is that mean good to you? it's just ur personal opinion when dragging other 2 titles in to bash them which is lame.(because I see that a lot)

Top 5 were classics but a bit too rote of a suggestion. But they are unquestionably great either way. Summer Wars I thought was very well made, but I thought Girl Who Leapt Through Time was a bit better, despite the crazy plottwist.

Kinda sad that even Japanese audience doesn't seem to remember Porco Rosso though. IMO Miyazaki's best movie.
