A less than favourable review of K-ON!! published in an Asahi newspaper column, panning the anime and its fans for having no interest in story development, is proving somewhat incendiary online.

An abridged translation of their review:

Unlike a music manga like BECK, which offers plenty of uplifting action, what K-ON! deals with is tea parties, cake appreciation and tests, in a laid back slice-of-life way.

There’s no story development or outcome with a classic moe manga like this – so there’s no story.

For otaku it seems character is more important than story, so fragmentary episodes like these are preferred.

As there’s no story, there’s no growth.

There are no male characters either – so there’s no change there either.

A utopia without any outcome or growth might well be just what blog and Twitter stir-loving modern fan tastes are after.

asahi-vs-k-on.jpg

The reviewer would appear to fall firmly into the “Type A” otaku mould.

What important to me is Azu-nyan! That is a must!
-There are no male characters either – We don't need a man moe-blob... it make me sick just thinking about it

Don't forget Ritsu's brother. He appears in the series and I'm pretty sure I saw him at least in one doujinshi.

Why the hell can't people figure out what the 'slice of life' genre is? It is PRECISELY about the characters and minimal/moderate story movement. Get on with the times, Asahi. I can understand their criticism, but it feels misplaced when the show clearly was going for a slice of life feel.

That's because Asahi editors/reviewers are nothing more but stupid sons of bitches. Anime shows like Lucky Star, Azumanga Daioh, and K-ON! may have no storylines but they are popular and successful. Asahi Shimbun may be one of the biggest newspaper companies in the world, but they are best at doing one thing and one thing only: making newspapers.

What's interesting is there is actually a bit of a plot. It's just that it's a world and character driven plot instead of a story driven plot. They do in fact have growth and change, as Yui actually learns an instrument and has to face her shortcomings around it in order to learn. That doesn't change who she is entirely like some stories do, which is unrealistic.

I honestly think that people are used to shounen plots and expect massive battles and action. What people identify as the "Moe blobs" are merely just people seeking something to slow them down in a world that is going out of control crazy fast. Demons and mass killing and such is saturating us so much that even us guys are wanting more of a balance to have a 'smoke break' from it all. K-on and Hidamari Sketch are really some of the most relaxing and needlessly enjoyable times when I watch them. Since season 2 finished I'm watching it finally now and really it's just leaving a smile on my face. You're meant to kind of see yourself in their exploits, not demand some kind of battle for the lives of the planet. We can get those from anything in Jump.

Don't forget the male lefty guitarist that Mio was fawning over when they went to the music fest.

They go to an all girl school. That is just the setting. Sure there are probably reasons for the setting, but the lack of a leading male character fits the setting fine.

Yes there is growth in K-ON! with Yui slowly changing, learning the guitar, ther girls friendship growing, Azunyan's change, graduation, how they treat azu-nyan, the characters change little by little as the story goes. They remain themselves mind you, but Yui become much more independant and Azusa much more laid back and fun (etc.).

That said you can argue that there is no growth in Dragon Ball's Goku, his personality and morals don't change at all. He is the same person from Dragon Ball to GT, he just gets physically stronger. Even with the addition of a wife and kid he doesn't change at all.

Above comments are people trying to find random reasons to justify K-On having a story when it doesn't.

A story has Buildup, Climax, Ending.

K-On just had Moe, then Ending.

Slice-of-Life genres don't necessarily have no storyline.
Series like Bakuman and Kimi no Iru Machi. They're Slice-of-Life too but they have plot twists and heart cringing moments in the midst of action K-On can only hope to have.

actually, it's true that there's no developement and huge plotline, and asahi also stated that it's part of slice of life animes. they just want to confirm that anime twitterers and bloggers nowadays only stomach this kind of genre. well, since it's truth, where's the problem anyway? why did you feel offended?

    Surprise.

I don't really see many Slice-of-Life series that have stories. Like Azumanga Daioh. That was rather enjoyable, I say. Made me repeat the letter "A" constantly.
Then I again, I don't see many Slice-of-Life types either, so I can't judge properly.

I'm anon 17:16, and when I say I like K-on I don't mean that I like it more than Beck. The interaction, I do, merely because it's that much more positive and frankly I enjoy good positivity when it doesn't feel forced. K-on proved how well made it was to me during the school trip in season 2 because of the scene where all she was saying was a funny word and they were losing it. That's exactly what happened with me and my friends at an Anime convention and that they were good enough writers to recognize how to make such a relatable situation means they deserve all the praise they get.

Beck is better in that it merely gave the characters a goal and something at risk. K-on's girls had a goal, it's just they didn't bet their lives on it. And sometimes your hobbies can be your aspirations, but you won't crumble if you can't do them all the time. It's good to have stories of people aspiring beyond themselves, but sometimes you just want to see something fun happening for the sake of fun and not know to expect some catastrophic destruction to turn the world to shit and half the characters you love die and such. I've got other stories for that as well.

Plenty of slice of life doesn't have a much of an overarching story. Most comedies or semi-comedies are like that. Don't come out saying how all slice of life are SUPPOSED to have stories or some such. They don't. The point of slice of life is the focus on the mundane, the funny aspects of daily lives of characters, etc. The setting is purposely meant to be played down so that the characters can thrive in it without the need to jump hurdles as far as the story or some plot-twists is concerned.

I don't intend to play down any type of anime by saying that. I love all types of anime. I just find it annoying that people think there's only one barometer of anime quality due to their own personal biases.

k-on is not slice-of-life. more like slice-of-otaku-wet-dream-fantasy. honey and clover is slice of life, so is an anime like kare kano. even genshiken is one. k-on is merely a show that concentrates on watching cute mannerisms that girls sometimes make, episode after episode after episode- in a stalkerish sort of way. a real slice of life anime would build upon on how a character would reaction to life-changing real circumstances (love, entrance into college, entry into the working world, etc), like a real person would. What k-on is doing is just using generic highschool moments to create situations where girls can act cute in.

fans like otaku will be upset if there are male characters playing major role on this. Romance will then be exposed likely. I wonder can they endure a scene when seeing mio being kissed by a guy who had fallen in love with her. They can also become jealous even for 2Ds.

    @Misakite

Judge the series on what the genres want to provide. Hell, are you going to whine that Friends is about nothing? Does a movie / series need to have a story to be good?

What a retarded conception you have. Let's quote something from your beloved Bakuman: "Clichés are good, and it's all about how do you it". There are many famous movie that's about nothing, if you summarize it in a few lines. Titanic: a couple on a sinking ship; Blair Witch Project: students getting lost in a forest, ... And I can keep going on like that.

Don't try to sound smart if you haven't thought about the matter, or even know ANYTHING about the medium. My hunch is that you're one of those people who think only serious stories can score high on a review?

I think the person means along the lines of main character guy along with the band. not in the band itself but has equal value. the aforementioned men are all supporting characters, they could die off and the show still go on.
