First of all, the designs have changed so much, you gotta wonder WHICH designs they have in mind. I loved certain Nami designs while thought others were grotesque.

But I think there's a bit of psychology in this too, because the One Piece females are actually cool characters and not actually overly sexualized, ironically. The body proportions are exaggerated and eeeeveryone knows it because of the style of the world and story. In fact it's one of the few styles where doujinshi actually make them MORE normally proportioned and they look sexy and attractive in those situations. In the story, you kind of don't WANT to think of them that way, at least I don't. I find Nami sexy as a character, as well as just entertaining and generally fun. It firmly made me want Nami to be Sanji's Mellorin, and thus I have no place to think of her as anything else :D

Almost none of the characters in the series are even remotely proportioned right, that's not limited to the girls.

Look at Iva, the original Elvida, ANYONE, seriously.

Just move on to Negima. It's got all shapes, all sizes in bodies, high quality stuff in the manga and in doujinshi. It's got a few lolis and DFC to boot.

lonesnipa, believe it or not it IS possible to draw a 2D girl with realistic proportions. hell, look at nami in those first couple of pictures. she looks fine there, it's only when they start inflating her tits and cinching her waist to pinky-finger widths that calling her "perfectly proportioned" gets really goddamn ridiculous. the profile of a girl's curves, 2D or 3D, should resemble a gently sloping hill, not the rocky fucking mountains.
