“The Anime Industry Has Become a Porn Industry, Hasn’t It?”

sex-sells-anime-001

sex-sells-anime-002

An anime fan alleging that the anime industry has degenerated into nothing but a porn industry has provoked an interesting discussion of the post-moe-boom anime market.

2ch discusses the issue (after illustrating its point):

“It’s become expected for anime to contain ero – to be honest this is pretty weird.
You can’t even show them to children or commoners…”

“Actually the anime industry just can’t survive without ero.”

“Late night anime is pretty much based on ero.”

“Even in the otaku market, anime is sinking right to the bottom.”

“Well, an anime like Bakemonogatari couldn’t have sold without the erotic component.”

“One issue is the age of producers – there seem to be a lot of older producers who really do think that normal adults don’t watch anime and that its sales will only be as big as all the bouncing breasts it contains.”

“I think Strike Witches encapsulates the current state of the industry. We don’t really need moe, animal ears and pantsu all over the place, but without it they won’t sell.”

“There were plenty of good older titles which had ero – Cat’s Eye, Lupin, Cobra, etc. What we see now is that these good ero containing anime have died out in favour of moe-anime, now the industry staple.

[…]

The ero-scenes in late night anime are now their main way of attracting audiences, and they are otherwise devoid of content – quite the opposite to how ero-anime of years past handled things.”

“Given the choice between a crap anime with ero and and a crap one without, I’d surely pick the one with.
Rather than being necessary, it’s a necessary evil.”

“The people who actually spend a lot on anime are moe-otaku and fujoshi. The ones who always whine about it aren’t the ones actually buying it.”

“But K-ON! and Angel Beats! never even showed any pantsu – makers who say ero is needed to sell are just making excuses.”

“Those titles may not have any direct ero elements, but aside from Ghibli anime (and perhaps including it) they all still rely on appealing to men with romantic elements and bishoujo characters.
We can say they are indirect ero-anime.
Their sales relied on a combination of those elements and good story and composition.”

“The issue here is that only moe anime sells. If they don’t build a new layer of non-moetard fans only moe anime will ever be produced.”

• Hmmm, of all those pictures above:
Motto ToLove ru: pure fanservice
Sora no otoshimono forte: 50% fanservice 50% serious plot
Samurai Girls: pure fanservice
Yosuga no sora: fucking porn

of all those, i think Yosuga no sora must stay on OAV format rather than tv series

• Clannad, especially ~After Story~. Ultimate counter example that anime can be awesome without ANY ero in it, if the production is right, the quality is right, the voice acting and music is right, and the whole thing has a well developed, sense-making and emotional story.

• I agree. I don’t mind ero but, yes more good non ero-anime could be nice. I mean its hard to even watch romance anime now a days without ero. And I remember back in the day when even shounen action stuff had light romance but non ero. Now all you see in the shounen action stuff is either all action plot etc, or crappy shounen action shows trying to act like ction but adding all the ero and boobs and the like. It’s sad that the industry is stunted. But I do think that the fall season did improve like maybe 5 percent than summer. So there may be hope yet. I’ll only despair when I see a full season of anime that is all uncensored erotica, with bouncing boobs and lack of or regurgitated plotline.

• I think the problem lies with a lack or original ideas. They’ve realized that ero is a serious selling point, and they’re using it to fill in areas that lack original writing. They’re trying to turn the boom-or-bust industry of film into a stable, moneymaking system. It’s kind of like the problem with our own American films focusing on sequels; we’re just running out of ideas.

• I wonder if so many anime enthusiasts out there will ever get off their high horses and stop looking down on us lowly ecchi-anime watchers, us perverts and fappers, and realize that we’re not really the problem, realistically.

• I think it’s all a good thing honestly, now maybe the more stuck up parts of society can open up a little themselves XD

You can’t blame the industry, it’s not like anime creators are giving us a choice. If they actually put out more artisicially powerful anime sometimes these days then I’m sure it could thrive alongside the allmighty oppai, as it did in the past.

Don’t blame the oppai, blame the lack of anything else.

The only “smart” anime I’ve really seen in the past decade is GitS, nothing else is appealing enough. Then we have some movies like Paprika, who’s creator recently died. Oh noes, those other smart anime guys better get off their asses and bring us something before it’s their time to bow out too.

But that’s not to say anime with ecchi in it can’t be good. I honestly think a HUGE amount of anime fans today are too stuck up to give anime with ecchi in it a fair shot. It doesn’t matter if an anime the equivalent of GitS comes out, stuck up anime fans wont watch it if it’s got a regular amount of fanservice, even if it’s blended in well and realistically.

• Yes, there’s a boom on anime with too much ero content, but I’d like to believe that clean anime with no ero content appeal are still out there.

Most people who thinks otherwise tends to quote a handful of classic titles of the past not taking in consideration how long it took for them to be made, and the time interval between such classics.

“I remember how we had x, y and z animes in the past and we don’t have those anymore” yadda yadda nostalgic crap.

We have tons of great recent animes with great stories. But they will never beat the nostalgic memories of some otaku, no matter how good.

Back to the ero content, I guess it’s much like when the obligatory sex scene and appeal came to be in Hollywood. We had tons of movies with uninspired (when not absolutely crap) plots that HAD to include the fucking sex scene or it just wouldn’t sell.

But again, I like to believe that there will always be creative minds out there to release content that doesn’t have to appeal to sex, just to sell. Instead, directors that feels that telling the story is more important.

It’s too early to define a period of time with solidly defined characteristics. Post-moe-boom means shit to me. We had some months of moe anime coming out, now we have borderline hentai. It’s nothing new. You know, we call these fads.

And as we know, anime directors, musicians or any of those who feel oblidged to follow such fads in their works ends up having an early funeral, that’s all.

Why don’t all the complaining people just go retro until the present becomes more their taste??

• sex sells, baby! it always has and I strongly suspect it always will. there always will be ronery men, holding their weiner in one hand and remote/magazine/mouse in the other. this surprises you how?

• honestly, I don’t really think this is true, and for a couple reasons:

1) Since when, in any porn, has it kept to JUST the stuff average in anime. Many of the things being complained about here wouldn’t even be considered softcore in the porn world, and since when did the story of a porn get even CLOSE to that told in even the worst of animes?

2)Isn’t porn what the hentai industry is for? After all, if we REALLY want to go down that “include hentai too” road, than really, all live action movies are porn these days.

3)I’d rather have an industry get closer to porn than gorn. Western shows could learn alot from anime.

• i’m fine with that…
Argentinian television it’s becoming reall bullshit repeathing the fking same stupiditie one and another and another time all the week (in all chanels they talk about the same program)
naked girls at minor protection time
sex references at minor protection time
etc…
i prefer ecchi , ero , hentai , loli and all the marvelous japanese industry of anime :3

• Um it’s not just anime. The TV/movie industry is part porn. Always has been. That’s why there’s a porn industry.

What’s alarming to me is that when increased censorship was introduced in anime and games, the amount of ero also increased. I think the companies are just adding ero to try to show that they can produce what ever they like.

• Conformation bias no? There are plenty of non-ero/moe shows out just look up the damn listings, but hey nobody supports those shows, people like you don’t even know they exist, if you want to blame somebody, blame yourself for not being like those “Creepy Otaku” who actually invest money into shows to see more of it.

• loli in a box says:

inb4

Masses of wannabe intellectuals posting long slandering posts about anime nowadays.

Oh wait. Already happened. 🙂

Cute 2D girls sell, get over it.
Go read some good books if you are searching for a “intellectual” hobby. Anime is the wrong medium.

• I would like to see more anime without ero like clannad, death note, DBZ, Kaze no stigma and ect. Now as i see anime industry makes not ero anime but more like hentai. I rarely see difference between it. Why can’t peaople go to ANN, Anidb, anime-planet and ect. and to look ant the top ratings, there are no ero-anime at the top!!!

• Durarara and Star Driver, two recent anime that came out that are awesome, because listening to a bunch of people on the internet with Nostalgia Goggles glued to their head is the beast way to find good shows, just go watch the damn things yourself instead of letting other people do it for you.

• I kinda agree with some points by 2ch Net-tards…

I’m still disappointed how the Strike Witches franchise as a whole degraded into the usual Ecchi shit when it’s not supposed to be…

I mean just look at the OVA. I’m probably one of the few who liked the OVA better.. Who cares if it won’t be popular.

But hey, when the girls themselves are walking in undies, people would just slap it as a fanservice show anyway.. who am I kidding?

Anyway, I’m finding myself, watching lesser anime titles these days. They all seem to be about Girl’s love pantsu and oppai fest merry go around..

• Oh yeah who cares if it’s popular? Just make it who cares if it bombs? At least we’ll know right? Seriously that’s essentially asking them to flush their money down the toilet and jeopardize the jobs of everyone at the goddamn company.

• Who cares about the money making~

If you’re 100% determined to make an interesting anime, you’ll go for it and ignore the fanservice/money making factors.

Anything lesser than 100%, you are likely to be sucked into needing money and alas, slap in some senseless pseudo porn into Strike Witches.

Perhaps your one of those “True Fans” who only watched Strike Witches for the Pantsu Moe Yuri.
Bulk of the people who couldn’t care about the anime’s theme… Those who don’t know jack shit
about it’s military genre

But who cares, you’re all after the Pantsu anyways.

Strike Witches shouldn’t been out of the Illustrations books (or novels) after all.

• I don’t mind ero content, I don’t mind some Anime with overwhelming ero content invading almost a whole season, as long as there are some Anime with a bit of a story, acceptable breast sizes and comedy apart from slipping and ending up in sexual positions. And there are at least some – so Anime are not lost and I’m fine.

And… is it much better with Holleywood Movies, Advertisement, Music Videos, ways celebreties try to get more intention … [continue if you want]
I don’t mind it there either, but still it feels more like a generel developement, than a Anime-thingy…

• Stupid people will always post something stupid…

For people that think anime has too many fanservice:

Then watch something that does not have IT!!!!
Idiots….
ie.
Arakawa Under the Bridge
Tegami Batchi
Bakuman
or
watch something that has a little of it:
The world God only knows

The reason why people think that anime is in such a bad state because they only watch what is popular,
they did not try to even pick an anime that are not very popular.

ie. Setokai Yakuindomo

Green Jokes to the max(since its their theme) and Nudity a little bit but compare to HSOTD it is just shit.

To all people:
Be a little more responsible when posting (specially trash-talk)

To anime fans:
Try to pick less popular series and try to check if it is like those MOE BOOMERS and PORN BOOMERS.

• we need anime’s like darker than black, phantom of requiem and Code Breaker(if they made one)

still anime today’s are still fun to wacth, shows likle Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s reminded me on how cool card games are. though the jump to ero, moe, loli has risen tremendously.

let’s just hope in the future we can balance animes not just all ero or ecchi(which is fine for me)

• So far, in October, 25 series have stated, excluding the kodomo ones. Out of them, 9 have absulutely no fanservice or moe, 3 more are moe with no fanservice (except Milky Homes and it’s ED). So, quit bitching and watch those 9 shows.

• So it’s not just this site reporting on mostly ero anime? That’s… not good. I understand as well as the next guy that sex sells but sex isn’t something that can be readily aired on TV or bought in stores (much like alcohol). Even fanservice has gone too far. It seems more like wank material than anything even remotely important. I understand there are some times where it’s unavoidable, like Princess Tutu for example. It has lolis in leotards doing ballet but it also has substance. It’s visually and emotionally rich.

• Correct me if I’m wrong, but I can’t remember if there were any ecchi moments in older shows like Voltes V, Kotetsu Jeeg, Mazinger Z or God Sigma… I think the first time I saw naked tits in a mecha show was in Gundam 0079.

• I get really tired of explicit anime. You get desensitized to it if there are breasts and panties in every frame. I think if its going to be done it should be more a strip tease than all out exposure. Its more exiting to imagine what isn’t shown than to have all of the explicit stuff thrust in your face.

• 8 man ,Vampire hunter D, Akria, Ninja Scroll, Lodoss Wars, Twilight of the Dark Master, X, Golgo 13,* Wicked City*, Crying Freeman*, and many more have euro or sex in them. (*= alright pretty damn close to hentai) But its not the “fanservice” that make these classics great. Excellent storylines, strong characters, great plots and “your not suppose to do that” violence /situation/topic is what made anime great in my opinion. Its the adult anime genera that’s being destroyed. I may be showing my age a bit with my examples (which is only a small chip),but what ever happened to that genera? Even the political adult anime is being washed out. Example; what do you think the majority of the old meca anines were based on? While I do enjoy the new gundam and a couple of others, the robo/mecs have gone stupid. Or lets say less intelligent. Better yet “mainstream” to appeal to a wider audience. How do they appeal to everyone? Kids = bold bright colors. Girls= cute happy characters. Guys= jiggle some tits etc. shoot something. Everyone= simple story so you don’t need to follow the series to understand it. Now these aren’t bad when geared to its specific audience. I like to have a broad collection to direct everyone too. I personality just want some anime to get back into its adult intelligent genera that i feel made it great. rant done!

• If you actually bought those “intelligent shows” maybe they would start coming back instead of watching them after the fact right now. There are plenty of good shows out right now, you would know if you actually checked the damn listings. And seriously, anime can do whatever the hell it wants, not everyone wants to watch a bunch of pretentious, depressing, bullcrap.

• The thing is, I simply adore ‘classics’ like Akira, Project A-Ko, Demon City Shinjiku, Megazone 23, Macross DYRL, Otaku no Video etc…

But, I realize that times have changed, the audience has changed and Anime itself has changed.

Most people who complain about Anime today are usually those who have a very strong sense of nostalgia for the ‘classics’ and are not willing to adapt and accept the change that Anime has gone through.

I mean, I understand that people naturally hate change, but it really does get very tiresome with all the incessant complaining and lack of any constructive criticism.

Being dreadfully frank, there is little that one can do to change the current situation as an individual. If you can’t adapt to the ‘new’ Anime climate, then why continue to comment and get involved with contemporary (mainstream) Anime?

Also, it that hard to like all (at least most) Anime, new and old?

• Yep!

Its like this with many people. Sure, we are fine with some sex and nudity. But a lame story is always a lame store.

Project A-ko is a great classic, sexual overtones – yet funny as hell. Only 1-2 nipple slips and pantie shots, which by todays standards, would be a Pokemon Episode. Or even the GAL-FORCE OVA series (Sci-fi – race of women warriors) had far more story than nudity.

Great Anime will always be great… someday, this moe-stuff will collapse and perhaps we’ll get some good stuff again. People like Miyazaki will always show how to make a good Anime movie without sex.

Some must-see classics.
Macross : Do you remember love
Wings of Honniamise
Nadia: Secret of blue water
Capitan Tyler
The Last Exile
LAIN
Dominion Tank Police
Ghost in the Shell (Manga, TV series, movies)
Tweeny Witches (Its a fun series)

The list of good stuff is vast… and is what makes Anime worth watching. Too much Moe will only be… well, boring – can’t tell the difference between one show and the next.

• I feel so isolated now a days. Being a fujoshi is tough. There’s just so many anime now a days that’s filled to the brim with fanservice. I don’t mind some fanservice once in a while, but if feels so awkward and painfully dull (to me at least) watching 15 minutes of tits jiggling and panchira in my face. I don’t even mind a whole fanservice episode as long as it’s not EVERY episode. They need more balance. Like take Fairy Tail as an example. There’s still a decent amount of fansevice, but it has an enjoyable, fun plot and best of all there’s some fanservice for girls with Gray-sama!~ (And the other cuties in FT, unintentionally or not.) That’s how you do it folks, if you feel you must include fanservice, try to cater to as wide a range you can while still making a quality work.

• “It’s become expected for anime to contain ero – to be honest this is pretty weird.
You can’t even show them to children or commoners…”

Hmm… waaaaaaaaaat? It’s not like boys and girls start masturbating at 18. Nor is ero-anime a direct hentai. What he bishing about?
Hypocrite.

• I watch for believability of character interactions and then story quality. If ero happens to be in it, then fine, but that’s not a

Despite all the whining, many of the moe anime out there are actually pretty entertaining. Far better than the crap harem with a loser inexplicably attracting a following.

• the only thing that can be said for certain about the future is that it will always be shittier than the past. before you know it, anime must contain 99% fanservice, 0,9% environment and less than 0,1% plot -__-

I’m a guy just like 85% of the rest of the posters, so i don’t mind a boob here and an ass there in an anime, but when the plot revolves around people losing their clothes for unknown reasons all the time i get bored by it.

• Woooah faggots are out in full force today i see, listen up get over yourselves you pretentious fucktards your anime isnt deep and your not an “intellectual” stop making up names for staple’s in anime that have been around for a LONG time, just because there are tits and ass in an anime you wouldn’t even like to begin with doesn’t make it horrible, seriously you people go on like this is straight up hentai the fan service is there sure but its not nearly as bad as some of you claim it to be grow up man really.

Second, Moe so to speak has been in anime for a long time and making shit up like “the moe boom” or “hentai boom” dose’t make it a trend or “boom” has there been more moe anime now than in recent years? perhaps, but to call it a boom is naive beyond all measure these titles are simply getting more attention thus a slight rise in popularity and quantity, less anime this season than you expect? and the majority of them are Harem Ecchi and Moe? recension’s happen and the industry can only afford to produce what sells right now the market will broaden in a few years its ok relax the industry is in no danger of death or stagnation its proved its worth in the past.

but i didnt expect much from you guys with this being a sensationalist website and all

pro tip: stop being a faggot and enjoy whats there, moe and gratuitous fanservice have always been a part of anime and probably always will it sells well and will probably save the industry your mecha porn is on the way dont worry

• Sora no otoshimono Temp2
You are pervert lolicon right? the living proof of “the Anime Industry Has Become a Porn Industry” and you are a consumer of this type of pornography…
well, I am a consumer too xD . Welcome to the club.

• The older titles one 2ch poster describes above were good titles that featured a little bit of erotic content. Nowadays it’s all either moe or shows where all the plot is just excuses to lead up to ero content.

Instead of doing what they can to create clever interesting shows, they just create whatever they think will sell; girls getting half naked through whatever ridiculous circumstances they can think of.

It’s one of the reasons I don’t watch a lot of the newer “hit” anime. I just can’t get into it when all anyone talks about is how much fanservice is in it.

• Oh yeah, because the alternative, jeopardizing the entire company and throwing away your money is better right? Go support a non-hit show then to help shows like that come out instead of complaining about people who are actually willing to give money to a work.

• I totally agree with what the person says. I like anime that gets you interested and wanting for more without the ero and moe scenes every episode. Cliffhangers, characters, dramatic fight scenes, a plot that flows smooth with the series. Great anime can be made without all the ero and moe. Its been done and proven before. Its probably that people feed into it because of the fanservice and popularity of ero and moe.

• This is true, however, the solution isn’t to censor everything. I’m currently re-watching the original Mobile Suit Gundam, and even from that era there’s loads of panty shots from Frau Bow and some topless scenes that don’t add to the story, but MSG is still a classic that launched one of the biggest franchises in anime. A bit of fanservice isn’t inherently bad, but it should be backed by good characters and/or story–not everything needs to be plot driven, but the characters should be deeper than a harem full of flat moe archetypes shaking their boobs around. Well, that’s ok in some cases if it’s done well for a change of pace (To Love Ru was all fanservice but it was quite funny at some points), but it can’t be 90% of the market like it is now.

I think what anime needs is another Cowboy Bebop style genre straddling show to get international attention and snap the industry out of this moe/ero addiction. Of course, the fans need to be willing to support a show that’s trying something different, and the companies need to make it more easy for foreigners to get the shows in a legal and fast way–there’s tons of money to be made outside of Japan if they give it a shot.

• I don’t see how tossing your money away will “snap” the industry out of some problem that may not exist problem, shows like Cowboy Bebop were good for it’s time but it probably didn’t age well and just making another one would just be doing what the moe shows are doing, assuming doing something will make something automatically good, and it doesn’t NEED “international attention”, when they develop a show it Britain, it’s made for BRITISH people, whether or not Americans like it is negligible, same goes for Japan, they shouldn’t have to cater to some foreign market when they have their own to deal with.

• “To Love Ru was all fanservice but it was quite funny at some points”

I disagree. I found the humor incredibly forced, tired, and more of the same in a different wrapper. And when you think about it, the entire series was pointless. Same interchangeable storylines where nothing really changes at the end of it, and which exist solely to get the characters undressed. Yawn.

• Yes! i would love for another Cowboy Bebop style genre. Watching Cowboy Bebop when I was young inspired, intrigued, and obsessed even after its end and movie. The soundtrack was the first anime soundtrack I listened in which I wanted all of the albums. Truly a classic and among the others of its time.

• Studio Madhouse did at most 5 moe-anime for the last 5 years and they are just fine.
They are one of the few studios whose works are actually watchable, duh.
I’d definitely prefer more blood and gore and less moe & pantsu. Mecha is good too. And spokon, of course.
…Wait, ain’t I writing in the wrong place?

• Because you are the end-all judge of quality? Obviously not considering there are ten shows you can watch right now that aren’t focused on moe or ero, you would know if you just pulled up a fucking listing.

• Long Comment is long:

Yes, there are a lot of moe/ero anime, but what would you expect if its the thing that sells the most? People just hold anime up as this “Artsy” medium, when in reality its an entertainment business and guess what? Thats right, the studios are going make what they know is going to sell well.

Look at Gonzo for example, they were a pretty ambitious studio with a lot of unique productions, but without anime like Strike Witches and Saki (both are actually pretty original and unique compared to a lot of other moe anime) they would have been filed bankeuptcy by now. (Truth be told though, both of those were ironically much better than a lot of their other works… *Cough*Shangri-La, Linebarrels of Iron, Dragonaut, Afro Samurai, Pumpkin Scissors*Cough*)

People are so jaded and biased these days that they choose to ignore some cool anime (moe or not) and constantly bitch about ero/moe when there are solid anime standing right there in their faces! I’m sick of people saying that older anime is better than newer anime when in actuality, they aren’t aware of the shit that came out of Japan in the first place. They only seen what came on T.V. and thats it (these anime ranged from average to good I.E. Sailor Moon, DBZ, etc.). I’m pretty sure there was shit anime we luckily never seen. Its just now we’re able to view every anime as it comes out because its easily accesible now more than ever with fansubs and even with seasonal charts to help us choose what we want to watch!

Btw. Deep definitely =/= Good. When an anime tries to hard to be smart, it fails on so many levels. Serial Experiments Lain (IMHO) is a prime example of this… Its just boring, pretentious, and incomprehensible. I’ll take OreImo and Lucky Star any day over watching that again.

And Moe =/= bad. To Aru Kagaku no Railgun happens to be the best episodic anime I’ve ever seen as it did something that even the critically acclaimed Cowboy Bebop didn’t do. Actually make the episodes connect in one form or another, sure Cowboy Bebop had the philosophical stuff and awesomeness in it, but I don’t remember characters changing or growing in it or leaving a real lasting impression on me for that matter… Railgun’s characters however, do develop as friends and change despite being another “crappy” moe anime.

Lastly, why should a person care if an anime has moe or ecchi in it? As long as you like the characters, plot, or whatnot, then why not? You could be missing out on something you may possibly like. Heck, if I didn’t watch Strike Witches, I would’ve missed something awesome and I still would have been blindly hating it.

• For the lulz,
Moe/ero animu are made to be appealed/sold to otakus
otakus don’t marry
they don’t get children
otaku generation deid
moero animu will fail to sell

hawhawahwa
Wait, not likely maybe seeing how attraction to moero can be transmitted.. airborne.

• except it is not a blood line thing and any lonely/virgin from japan can easily become an echhi-moeru lovin otaku

Sadly, they are not race that can die off permanently to be forgotten. If only there was a birth of a neo-Hitler to clean up in Japan….

• Airborne it is then, sadly.
But Hitler was Japan’s friend, well, at some point in history. So even then there’s no stopping them.
Also the possibility that some otaku do get married eventually?

It seems this overtly corrupt culture will go on for some more, for who knows how long.

• Honestly, none of our opinions mean jack shit if we don’t buy it.

So you don’t like it? So you think it’s crap? Not gonna watch it? You don’t make a bit of difference and neither do I. The people buying it do.

Feel free to bitch all you like, just saying our opinions don’t mean a thing.

• I immediately knew after seeing examples such as Queen’s Blade, KissxSis, and Seiken No Qwaser that these were a sign of what was to be in the future of anime.

These days it almost seems like a game to see who can push the envelope the farthest. O_o But just how much farther can they go with content? Even Japanese televesion has limits.

• Maybe instead of wasting time watching anime and expecting it to educate you and justify your existence, you could go to school or read some non-fiction books. Doing so might even allow you to learn things like when to use “further” instead of “farther.”

If you want realistic tales of heartbreaking romance and epic battles, do something positive for society and go volunteer to spend some time with lonely nursing home residents, as they have all those stories and more to share.

Once you basement-dwelling freaks start living a real life that serves an actual purpose, you’ll get all the profound experiences you need in a day long before you sit down to watch anime. Then you’ll understand why normal folks just want to relax and be entertained at that point.

• Having co-workers come ask you how to install Winzip sure is PROFOUND.

Are you saying that you, a brilliant contributor to society, are entertained by underage girls getting naked? Perhaps you should follow you own advice, get a real life so you can have fun with a real woman instead of gawking over the pixelated representation of underage females?

• See the funny thing is, actual non cock teasing hentais have more story then your average moe/ecchi anime though. Moe/ecchi anime having better animation is just an excuse for these type of people and ruining it for the rest of us.

Lots of areas around the world equal anime as hentai, and now they’re correct. I realized not too long ago, I been actually make fun of these anime-horny-kid sounding fantards on the net lately.

• A new alternative to arousal yes but not porn. Porn requires visual and constant sex between 2 or more people with action happening between the 2 sex organs and with sound. These anime shows you cannot show your young or old family members to are just exciters. Nothing XXX rated.

• simple fact is that ero dosent sell over seas. in japan its gonna be popular but once they try to export it they will hit a road block. ive noticed shows like strike witches and K-ON end up being watched by tween girls instead of by the target 18-34 males.

if the anime industry wants to get back to the big bucks of 2006-2008 then they need to drop the moe/ero crap and get there fucking shit straight.

also if any of you disagree with this then your just a fucking idiot and a asshole. im so sick of all the stupid fucks who are obsessed with this stupid ero/moe crap.

• Hum~ you sould said this is almost like the an ecuation videogame X anime between moe plus derived of moe minus the hentai…. forget it, its too complicated for explain an for people to comprehend (even i have some troubles with what im trying to said). Lets hope the studios see more mangas or search for people or even fanfics to make anime.

And the secret for an anime to be succesful is held by Anime Tenchou in his appearance in Lucky Channel, almost eveyone will agreed… or at least some few comprehend his words

• I used to watch the good old animes with my older brothers. Now everything is all perverted and shit and i try my best to keep them from watching any of them in order to not tarnish their opinions of japanimation.

• They should pour their efforts into making more hentai with interesting stories so they can keep anime and hentai from crossing over like they have.

…Hentai with interesting stories…Hah.

• “It’s become expected for anime to contain ero – to be honest this is pretty weird.
You can’t even show them to children or commoners…”

this happens to me. I cant watch some series along “normal” people and just with another otaku/anime fan friends… why? too much cheesy sex. Is not the “hot scene” is the whole episode or serie.

I started to watch old series, like fushigi no umi no nadia or macross… damn, that was a good shows and every nude was classy and not a 30 minutes waggling boobs.

• Here’s how to get around it; Good storytelling.

Vampire Hunter D.
Fist of the North Star.

Even Ranma 1/2.

They need to tell good stories, not re-hash formulas.

Hopefully Cameron will do another “Battle Angel” movie, the “Motorball” story. A lot of elements from that would make perfect cinema.

• You know what if K-On didn’t sell well? What if ratings were bad, DVDs didn’t sell, and no one bought the merch? Then it wouldn’t have gotten it’s second season, but that’s not what happened, it sold well and got green lighted, because you know which series get green lighted? Ones that turn a profit. You can cry quality and direction all you want but at the end of the day if K-On hadn’t sold well, then to make a second season is just asinine, and no matter how “revolutionary” your show is if you can’t turn a profit then to keep investing money is just bad business sense that jeopardizes EVERYONE in the company as well as your business future, if you want good stories then SUPPORT the good shows and let the bad shows fade off.

It’s like this very website, Artefact makes articles based on what will get the highest amount of hits, if a topic gets no hits, then to keep making them is idiotic and THAT’S shooting yourself in the foot, not making a profit. Seriously I’m starting to agree with the mangaka here, this isn’t a charity service, if you want something to succeed support it and encourage others to do so, if you don’t support a series then don’t bitch about it when it goes under.

• long run, this treand hurts, look at video games, halo comes out, its a hit then we get 300 shitty clones of it, god of war comes out, then 400 shitty clones of it comes out (some wich cost millions, and sell like shit (dantes inferno for example)), theres no inovation, no moving foward (fear of taking a risk, to play it safe), what happens?, it stagnates, gets smaller, budgets are reduced, investors take less risks, and then it becames a niche again, supported only by their undiying fans.

i hope what i have written is understandable (i tend to bucher every language i speak), what is happening to anime is similar to what is happening to games.

• Yeah, it’s a cycle of innovation, it doesn’t matter if it’s Halo or moe it’ll happen regardless, if some revolutionary new philosophical anime came out and made a splash then the exact same thing happens, 300 copies come out, it doesn’t freaking matter what it is the only solution is to just buy what you like, the more money you invest the better the industry can breath, and if you’re too cheap to do that then you get what’s coming to you.

• I’d have to say it’s quite off putting there hasnt been a realy good show in the last year or so and the current crop only has one that i’ll be watching. The only ones that have broke cycle atm are break blade and gundam unicorn and both are very slowly released.

• i guess i can agree with one! im losing interest now watching anime! its always about ero and moe on this era!

there’s no more like a good driven story anime that u just cant wait to watch and expect what to happens on the next epsiode!

thats why i still prefer the 90’s to the early Y2K anime titles!

• Then you are very shitty at picking out animes, seriously does anyone even look at the damn lineups anymore! I’m pretty sure you haven’t watched Durarara have you? Or any other of the good shows coming out.

• I’ve been watching anime for close to 30 years and to see this trend is depressing. There’s no substance anymore, and anime companies are so desparate to turn a profit that they cater to the lowest common denominator (otaku and their fetishes).

The same thing happened to Hollywood cinema. The biggest impetus for making productions in cinema nowadays is the profit margin, hence the endless string of shitty sequels and remakes.

Satoshi Kon has passed, and frankly after Miyazaki does I’m not sure who can take up those reins and tell original stories that have substance and artistry without pandering to otaku fetishes to keep them afloat.

• Wow, nostalgia filter up the ass. Hey, guess what? That “lowest common denominator” actually GO OUT AND SUPPORT THEIR SHOWS! Amazing right! They actually go out and buy stuff to help the producer make more of what they want, because to do otherwise is throwing your money down the toilet. Seriously you people have no one to blame but yourself, don’t lambaste the Otaku for enjoying what they like, they actually make a move to tell producers what they want, blame yourself for not helping to support original series. I really agree with those mangaka now, “This isn’t a charity service” if you want better shows maybe you should stop being so damn cheap and buy some merchandise.

• Maybe if Japan didn’t price point their shows so that only the most obsessed people would buy them? What kind of sane person is going to spend that much for 2 episode discs? Oh, right. Only otaku.

You know what the industry’s sales strategy is right? It is to sell discs to a core otaku audience. They don’t price it to sell to normal people. They are purposely setting prices high to meet an expected low volume of sales. Self. Fulfilling. Prophecy.

And how the hell do you know whether people are buying or not? Way to blanket statement.

• If you’re going to make porn, make porn, if you’re going to tell a story, tell a story. At least this doesn’t always happen, the Soul Eater anime actually toned down the fanservice from the comic. But with porn so readily available these days fanservice just gets annoying. More people would probably get into it and buy if the industry would just grow up a bit.

Maybe I can only say that because anime DVDs are so much cheaper in the US.

• I guess they forgot that there is the hentai type of anime, and that they don’t need to screw nice stories with a lot of fanservice, huge boobs bouncing and others.

Fanservice is nice on moe animes, but with balance, and not all times, every scene and such.

You know? This is the Ecchi industry, and they get profit by some ways:

– They got your attention to be an ero-like anime
– They pay censors for your TV version.
– They release the DVD uncensored and you buy it.
– They repeat the formula again and again.

There are really nice gold to be found among the fails/lots of fanservices/etc.

Fate/stay night, is a nice example. I loved how TM worked on it, it’s fantastic! You don’t need the sex scenes of the VN on the movie to have an awesome story.

Anyway, bussiness is bussiness. If it sells, they will continue to do crappy/cheap animes.

Just don’t forget that who makes that to happen are the ones that buy and support those titles. Make them stop buying, and let’s see if it won’t change.

• What do you mean “make” them stop buying? Who died and you made you God to decide which anime other people are allowed to enjoy?

That’s the problem with moe/ecchi haters… You don’t watch – let alone buy – any of the type of shows you claim they ought to make more of, you just watch the same shows you supposedly hate but then turn around and complain about too many other people buying them.

Take a tip from Gandhi and be the change you wish to see.

• Anime contains some sort of erotic content, as most animes aren’t meant for children but older teen. I’ve noticed alot of new cartoon network shows have some romantic content but I digress. Also, sex sells and the industry will do what they must to make money.

• When we see that most anime that come out from Japan happen to be an Ero-anime, we can say they are right. Furthermore some of the most sucessful animes in Japan are of course moe animes, well, it’s not going to get better right away. When we see that some anime adaptations from manga become invaded with fan-service…

Thanks god there is manga. Atleast in manga there is still a lot of choice besides ero-manga and yaoi…

• I don’t understand why people whine so much about it. All entertainment media have always been and probably always will be this way, making almost nothing except what sells the most or gets the highest ratings or chart position until people get sick of it, and then rinsing and repeating with some different variety of crap that’s even worse than the last. Lately they’ve become so desperate as to place annoying censor boxes and hideous blobs or beams of opaque light over what turns out to be G-rated content on the DVDs/BDs, so you can rest assured that even with as little common sense as otaku have, such tactics are bound to backfire spectacularly, thus ending the current trend.
However, you should be careful what you wish for since the quality of writing and direction has become so abysmal that even ecchi harem comedies are somehow riddled with far more plot holes than they have plot to punch them through. Should these same cheap, talentless, unskilled staff attempt to produce anime that relies on coherent, moving storytelling and deep characterization, the horrifying results would leave you begging for a return to pantyshots and accidental breast fondling.

• The part I don’t get is why the hell they don’t make real porn. Preferably out of popular anime from the past like FMP, FMA, S&W, HnNKn and so on. Just, y’know, fuck copyright. Or better yet, abolish copyright. No one cares anyway.

PS: If I wish porn of popular anime than I wish it in the quality of Eva 2.0 or better.

• I agree that more and more ecchi is generally a bad thing, quality-wise for the industry. I say, just keep making attractive characters with minimal fanservice in the shows and let us enjoy the peripheral/doujin material that do have ecchi material that will surely come afterwards.

• AlphaMeridian says:

My point of view has always been that you should never skirt the ero line – either be ero, and try to be the best ero series you could be, or don’t. So your Clannads can be Clannad and have a plot and you’re clearly not watching that for the fanservice. And your ero series can be ero, and you can watch it for just that. But don’t try to be skirt the fanservice line, because so many of those series have so little plot that they’re pointless to watch, AND they never deliver on the ero front.

• Seriously, let’s think about this first. What would you classify as an Ecchi/Fanservice Anime?

– One that has occasional panty shots and bouncing boobs, but is not the main point?
– One with crude jokes and sexual humor but with no nudity or underwear whatsoever?
– One that has gratuitous fan service that occurs every two seconds?
– One that actually shows tits w/ nipples and ass and contains sexual acts?

I believe that there are so many varying degrees of fan service in Anime that it is really unfair to lump them all together.

When dealing with Ecchi/Fan service shows, are Sekirei and Queens Blade on par? No, of course not. One had lighthearted fan service on the side to compliment the main story, while the other was blatantly near ‘porno’ level.

My constant beef with these kinds of discussions is that people never define their terms and mark out the boundaries.

For instance, I wouldn’t even consider Bakemonogatari an ‘Ecchi’ show as the fan service wasn’t the main point of the show.

Besides, as mentioned above, there are still truckloads of great Anime without heavy emphasis on fanservice still being made. Bakuman, Ika Musume, Star Driver, Iron Man, Index and many more from this season.

…and stuff like Eden of the East, Macross Frontier, Umineko, Katanagatari, Code Geass, Kannagi, K-On!, etc… from seasons past.

• Wise Actar is wise. My definition of ‘Ecchi’ is the two latter options of the four choices. So everything you said is pretty spot on to me. I’m just hoping that these “no plot, tits and ass only” anime don’t become a trend. Btw, I like Sekirei and I hate Queen’s Blade, so the people who lump them together just because Sekirei has some fanservice does make me a little mad.

• AlphaMeridian says:

I’d say that Mitsudomoe and K-On are both humor – neither is going to deliver any real ero content. They’re on par, even if the implementations were different.

Queens Blade, however, is clearly much more ero than Sekirei (at least the Sekirei TV version). QB is clearly going to try to appeal to the segment of the population who wants to see tits, while Sekirei attempts to deliver you a plot and toe the fanservice line, but is never really successful at either.

• Well shit, 2chan is now considered news?

It is simple, the ecchi/moe type of anime is a current fad which sells. Anime is made for profit, and as long as it sells, they will keep on producing it. When sales start to fall, productions will move toward another type.

If you don’t like the current crop of ecchi/moe – THEN STOP WATCHING (even though the vast majority of people in here are illegally watching it anyway – so to the anime companies your opinion means shit)

• I agree 100% with this argument, Moe anime and Ero-anime is creating a decline in anime and the diversity of audiences, and killing any chance of originality or profound storylines. Someone needs to step in and create an anime without these themes to disprove that.

• News flash, those kind of anime don’t sell well. If you’re selling cheap candy, and it really sells, while the really expensive candy does not sell, you would have to be insane to make more expensive candy.

• Then I guess GAINAX is the insane maniacs. Even though moe is still in the series and the fanart on Pixiv perpetuates your point. The series has created a definite line of either hating Panty and Stocking or loving it. Also testing to see if moe/ero of these chibi western mixed designed characters would still sell. Although I have to say when anime with deep story driven plots there is always a typical archetypes of story telling that gets old in Anime.

• Unfortunately, DmonHiro is right. Just look at what is happening to television across the pond. Firefly/Serenity was nothing less than an attempt to buck the trend of all-reality TV all the time that has blighted western TV for the better part of a decade. It was a gripping, well written series that garnered many fans and will always hold a special place in my heart.

Financially, however it was a spectacular failure. Even the movie ended up losing money. In fact, it served only to further entrench the crapification of Western TV by convincing execs that traditional television drama was dead and Science fiction would never sell.

To get back to the matter at hand, it’s always good to try and buck a trend but it’s almost always a losing proposition. A few enlightened individuals will be drawn to the beacon of creativity and originality, but the vast majority of consumers are dickheads who wouldn’t know a good story if you tied to a rock and bashed their skulls in with it. “What’s this? A animu with no bewbs and pantsu? *NOT WATCHING*”

I would love to see such a series, but I would be saddened as well, since it would be doomed to die a premature death as the moe-tards happily ignore it and continue jerk off to their imaginary girlfriends.

Unfortunately, said moe tards have driven off most mainstream (Read: people who wouldn’t be registered sex offenders in the West) viewers from anime long ago and claimed it as “their” territory. So anime producers have to market exclusively to them to stay in business.

• cheep candy = fanservice anime
expensive candy = experimental anime

I don’t mean that price wise, I was just making an analogy. Both fanservice and experimental anime can cost just the same.

• It fills time and is trivial to write in comparison to trying to write something with a good enough story and plot to sell (with enough fanservice, you can sell complete drek… without any, you better be very good). In the long run, that will be cheaper because you’ll be able to turn out more fanservice heavy material faster than fanservice light material.

• Nostalgia and Sturgeon’s Law, as people have already stated supposed “classics” have fanservice in them too, and the level of the story is completely subjective too, I enjoy Durarara more than any other “classic” anime I find the story better too, and besides going back to Sturgeon’s Law a lot of anime come out each year, they can’t ALL be masterpieces, not everyone gets the 100k salary, and it really isn’t that hard to pick out what shows you will like. Really chibi or moe style, love plot, and majority female cast, GEE I WONDER WHAT THIS SHOW WILL BE ABOUT? You knew what you were getting into when you watched K-On no one tricked you or hid from you what it was about and neither does the show. If you like a different show then go buy form that show, support the creators, instead of bashing others for your inability to do so, or for their ability to do so.

Seriously just look up the damn line-up, they normally have pictures, read the summaries, browse, and pick the shows you want to watch, Star Driver and Durarara were stellar, because of Sturgeon’s Law.

• Lucky for me I’m one of those people who love moe, so all the new moe stuff is Heaven for me. Ah, but you ask, what do I do when I want to watch something not moe? Easy: pop in one of the hundreds of older anime that I have yet to see. Best of both worlds, baby. Bring on the moe. If you can squeeze in some story, even better. BUT, there’s one thing you must have if you want my money. No, it’s not boobs or panties, it’s lovable characters. If you can do that, I won’t mind that you get your powers from breast milk. Yes, I’m looking at you, Qwaser. If it wasn’t for Sasha being absolutely sarcastic and 100% badass, I would had dropped that like an old rock.

• Well, isn’t the anime industry adapting more and more from the eroge industry? In that case, it isn’t that unusual to see more ero in anime especially when eroge are attracting more otaku and the fact that many industry staples such as characterisation are being driven by eroge.

Especially when adapting eroge, its difficult to do it without ero. It also happens to be the easiest way out of character progression.

• But can you blame them for adapting ero games? The writing for alot of whats been made into anime the past few years has been shit, while these ero games have writers who have to do a good job on a bunch of different story lines. Sure it usualy ends up mediocre as anime, but its better than brain junk food like strike witches or vampire bund.

• I actually agree with this. Shows based entirely on fanservice just seem like total garbage to me. It seems like the industry should want to attract more viewers with intelligent shows or fun shows like your Code Geass or Evan type things and less mindless drivel like to love ru.

• Too much recent anime can best be described as tits now with nipples and a lot of bare asses occasionally featuring some anime, as opposed to anime which occasionally has a brief moment with a breast shot or a bare ass.

It’s gotten out of hand.

It’s time they understood, even a good joke isn’t funny after someone has told it a dozen times in just one show.

• 1. it’s that there are people who buy it just for the ero content – see HOTD, so as long it sells the’ll make it
2. as long not all anime is just porn there shouldn’t be a problem
3. it’s for adults (only someone who works can buy those disks)
4. it’s hard to make a good show so they put ecchi into it to sell it better (HOTD)
Sex sells even in anime…

But still it gets boring especially when they make the fanservice too blatant.

• Fanservice, ero-driven shows been around the anime industry for a very long time now. I have not once complained about these shows while growing up, but it’s gotten tiresome to see so many every season.

• Psychic Detective Yakumo?

Hakuouki Shinsengumi Kitan 2? (still busy watching, so I may have missed something in a future episode)

Bakuman? (Never heard it described as ecchi anyway)

Togainu no Chi? (Although like Nabari No Ou, that one is apparently more aimed towards the ladies and their male x male shipping desires.) (Haven’t had the chance to watch it yet though. More a time issue, give the first episode a look over to see if I like it or not.)

Tegami Bachi? (Never heard it described as ecchi either.)

And I’m bound to forgotten a few. The non-ero ones are still there. You just have to try and not be distracted by the other ones with boobies to find them. 😛

• ‘Psychic Detective Yakumo’

I love that show. I also loved “The Book of Friends” – similarly supernatural fantasy.

Anime is great at doing wild flights of fantasy – from Spike Spiegel getting into high-tech shoot-outs to wild ghosts running amok.

• Is this a valid complaint? Because while I appreciate really good anime with great storylines, I’ve always figured that those types only come once in a while (every 2-3 seasons?) and I’m more than happy to be patient for them.

In the meantime, if there isn’t excellent anime to be found, then please bring on the ero, and plenty of it. At least I can fap myself to a pleasure while waiting on the good stuff.

• Sex has always sold and if I remember correctly, timeless classics such as Neon Genesis Evangelion and Dragonball had fan-service and ecchi moments in them as well.

The movie industries among all nations have always used sex to sell, as well.

• Deibi_Manabu says:

Don’t forget Lupin III has Fujiko naked for a lot of stories, as well as the sex moments, and that was aired back in the 70’s. Miyazaki’s movie of the same even had a few innuendos in it, but nothing as blatant as the TV series did. But that’s over 30 years ago now, so we’re not seeing anything new, just more of it.

I personally like some series for their stories, Index II being the new one to watch for me! ^^

• Here’s the difference:

Shows like Dragonball and Ranma 1/2 used ecchi moments for humor. Those shows were watched by kids and girls, audiences that weren’t looking for porn.

Shows like Strike Witches use ecchi for sexual stimulation. It is watched by otaku who are looking for porn.

• No difference.

Do you seriously think that showing Bulma’s bare breasts is purely for comedy? If it were purely for comedy, they wouldn’t have actually showed them. Instead, they would have cut the view to another angle where it would be impossible to see them. They didn’t do that though, they instead showed them in full view.

Was the scene where Shinji fell on top of Rei funny? It wasn’t. It wasn’t just that, her towel fell off, too. It wasn’t necessary. It was there for stimulation, at least partially, as sex in any medium always aims to do.

Ranma’s story didn’t need any of the fanservice it had in its run. At least, it didn’t actually need to show any of it, but it did.

Sailor Moon, another classic. I don’t even need to tell you that the original version from japan had A LOT of fanservice in it. In fact, when they showed the movie on cartoon network a long long time ago, I can still remember clear as day the scene where Sailor Moon carries the naked mini-moon in some sort of psychedelic scene. It was unnecessary, yes, but it was definitely enjoyable to watch.

My original point stands. Sex has always sold, whether its hollywood, bollywood, anime, or any other medium.

• You can’t tell the difference between a couple of fanservice shots versus every single episode being a collection of them as is the norm nowadays? Besides, DB was censored in the US, we never saw such a scene and we still watched it.

Who, exactly, watched Sailor Moon to see a naked Mini-moon? A character that doesn’t even exist in the first season. How many people knew after the first episode that such a scene would even exist?

The point is people could care less if these scenes weren’t in the shows. No one watched NGE for a couple ero-comedy scenes. I doubt you could say the same for today’s ero shows, which would be devoid of anything w/o the fanservice.

• “I think Strike Witches encapsulates the current state of the industry. We don’t really need moe, animal ears and pantsu all over the place, but without it they won’t sell.”

epic fail comment…GTFO of 2ch 🙂

• I, for 50% agree with the statement.

Looking back upon some old anime’s, shows ecchi has always been there. But the deep stories disappeared the last few years. I certainly wouldn’t mind something along the lines of ‘The twelve kingdoms’ for onces.

• The first anime I ever watched was Guyver. It was made of pure awesomeness, because some of these dudes can pick up the front end of a car with 1 hand!!

Then the next anime that I started watching was Sailor Moon, oh gawd those legs are so damned sexy! From that point on, I became an outcast. Thank you Eroge industry!

• thte fact anime relies on ero is not limited to anime, all other media rely on it, i mean just watch videogames, or american comics both marvel and dc. what makes it less visible this side of the ocean is the dual morality of americans.

i think what we are lacking are good stories i keep watching anime from the 80’s and 90’s and i still find it way better than todays. i find funny that angel beats had no ero, because i liked that anime. while i have watched, or more precisely started to watch many so call popular animes and i leave after 2-3 episodes.

• I actually recently realized myself what the article is suggesting. I wasn’t embarassed to say I enjoy Anime a long time ago, but recently, it’s starting to become more difficult to express myself to friends not familiar with Anime in fear of being ostracized. Interestingly enough, I don’t mind revealing that I like Pokemon–games and Anime– but I have a problem with other anime.

BTW, I turn off images before I access Sankaku Complex.

• Well, he is right, to a certain extent. Never before have there been so many near-hentai shows on TV and many of them try to justify niche interests as common practice. The recent “Ore no imouto” is just the icing on the cake. The problem is not the worry about the harmless nature of drawn/animated pictures, it’s the flame-bait for moral nazis. People who want to forcibly impose their “morals” on others.

• Damn right “You can’t even show them to children or commoners.”

I used to watch anime with my sister when I was younger, but I cant even imagine watching any of the shit that ends up getting green lit these days.

In the end I say the industry is shooting themselves in the foot. I am sure there are plenty of fairly normal anime lovers out there that arnt the fat ulgy otaku that would wank to pedo shit like strike witches or komodo no jikan.

• So right there!!!!!, anime this days seems to only relly on ero content to have high ratings, that is a shame.

Bring me back akira, hokuto no ken, saint seiya, mazinger (the not so ero mazinger from the past) and all thos shows of the golden era of the 90’s, those are trully an state on the art anime to show for generetions.

• Not entirely true. In the midst of the random ero, the general quality of animation has increased nearly exponentially for normal TV anime. This is blowing things out of proportion in the ero elements. There’s definitely more of a focus these days, but the biggest element is the fact that the general quality has increased such that simple panty shots and panty reveal falls are given massive detail and attention by the animators, and thus stick out in peoples’ minds more.

I’m actually happy they’re ‘getting this out of their system’ so to speak. The industry is basically building a very flimsy suspension bridge to bridge the current piracy gap as they try to adapt I think.

• Truth is the industry has been the same before even death note came to be. They just industry produces gems from time to time.

So all this things that we see with erotic fan service… Blame the hentai boom.

Believe it or not, some people outside the anime fandom do have a notion of anime = hentai. Can’t blame them… This has done a significant thing.

OTOH I am guilty of this when I was a kid. But now, gratuitous ero fan service, I see it as a big negative.

• Its weird when you grew up with more and more of this shit getting made. When I started anime it wasnt for the cartoon boobies, it was because the stuff was interesting and visualy appealing.

At my age now I almost feel ashamed to admit I still watch it with all the moe and pedo stuff being made.

• Don’t talk shit. The REASON it was visually appealing and interesting was because of the sex, otherwise you’d watch cartoons in your own language, there’s lots of them.

Don’t be ashamed, friend, just fuck off. Anime never needed fans who felt the need to try and force a prudish western view of sex onto it . JAPAN IS NOT AMERICA. I’ll say it again: JAPAN IS NOT AMERICA. If you don’t like Japanese values, don’t watch their TV.

• Don’t be ridiculous. I highly doubt live action Japanese TV has bouncing boob/panty shot every 5 mins. And where are all the kids with D cup boobs on Japanese TV? Damn, surely they’d be padding all those bras because that’s clearly what the Japanese audience wants? Equating otaku interests with mainstream Japan is ludicrous.

Cartoons in your own language? Guess you’ve never watched a foreign film ever, eh? Guess subtitled movies have never been released in your own country either? There is no American analogue to GitS anyway.

• Absolutely. It’s not that I don’t like some fanservice, but a lot of moden anime is truly shameless tripe. We had a little window where anime was sort of understood in the mainstream – before that it was “all hentai.” Now it’s “all pedo.” Damn, I almost wish we were back at square one, because it’s become something you don’t want to admit to people in case they get the wrong idea based on the modern hardcore otaku you see all the time… that so many new shows are being made for, instead of for the public.

• Oh, I scour through anime all the time for good stories. I’ll indulge in some silly ones pretty often, but there are some that just stick with me… they’re usually movies, though.

*Any* of Satoshi Kon’s works. (Especially Millenium Actress and Paprika).

Summer Wars (loved it).

Aoi Hana (Wish it would’ve been longer, it was such a sweet yuri).

• Yup, good and deep stories are rare and hard to find and can be combined with (some) ero content. I certainly would enjoy a third season of Ghost in the Shell with some added fanservice similar to the more saucy manga, I would enjoy it without as well, though.

I really like fanservice, but I like good stories just as much. Titles with less or no fanservice won’t hurt at all, just like it was a decade ago. Some anime producers seem to think only sex sells, but when you turn on the TV you don’t find porn all day.

• It’s not that only ero and moe sells but that moe and ero sells more.

What’s gonna sell better, a retelling of the journey to the west or a retelling of the journey to the west with gorgeous girls?a comedy about a squid humanoid working at a ramen shop

What’s going to sell better, a comedy about an extremely cute squid humanoid working at a ramen shop?

Moe is good, ero is good. If these shows are lacking content is because great shows are rare and sparse, not because there’s moe and ero.

• @ 5:57 Schrobby

I agree. I’ve seen the first episode for most of the series this season -.- and most have the most ridiculous story, certainly far from deep and immersing to the watcher.

As for Ghost In The Shell….I think the attire the Major wore was PLENTY enough ero content xD

(And a +up for you as well kind sir)

• More ero in anime? I think it’s all a good thing honestly, now maybe the more stuck up parts of society can open up a little themselves XD

• I can usually tell a series is going to be awful then the opening contains a whole bunch of engrish gibberish…and well…yeah.

Bakuman, P&S, Star Driver, Ore No Imouto, and Index II are all I’m really watching. So just five series, when there are like, 15+ easy >___> And this is coming down from the 10+ series a season I used to watch a little over about, a year, maybe a year and a half ago.

• I agree this season hasn’t exactly been earth-shattering, but it’s unfair to expect something to be deep and immersive from the first episode.
Even series that have good stories often start out with introductions that overplay action and ero elements at the expense of subtle plot development.

• Okay this is a bit insane though. That second to last dude is basically saying that if there’s any romance whatsoever with an attractive female than it can be defined as some version of ero, and that’s just fuckin’ bullshit.

It’s ero if there’s even a hint of the possibility that in the potential future lovers will probably have sex? WHAT THE FUCK!?

• @anon 07:24 Moe girls are cute because they were designed to be cute, and the way they act is part of that. There is a very large difference between character-oriented and moe-oriented. When it’s about the characters, yeah they go about their daily lives, they do stuff, they may grow as a character. But when it’s moe-oriented, it’s all about cute girls and making cute girls cuter by literally any means necessary. And while the K-ON! anime seemed like this, the manga didn’t strike me that way. At it’s core, K-ON! is a comedy slice-of-life and its more unrealistic qualities (like Yui’s guitar skills) are just running gags that worked better in 4koma form but don’t translate well into anime.

Complaints about lack of plot do have standing. But I would rather argue that there’s a lack of seriousness and down-to-earth-ness nowadays. The way I see it, anime lately has been either extremely comedic and lacking a serious plot, or trying to have an epic plot but only getting halfway there, and for many that’s enough. There do need to be more epic plots, but also more character-oriented stuff. That doesn’t mean relatively intelligent females and such. There’s way too many females in anime. What it needs is more males to balance it out. And deeper characters in general.

• All these subtle movements and subtle facial expressions is exactly why most of us thinks Kyo-ani is wasting all their excellent animation skills on something like K-ON.

They are masters at moè and are the only ones I know off that can actually make girls cute. Most other companies just use forced-cuteness by adding blushes, big sparkly eyes, baby talk, childish voice actors (not that the voice actors in K-ON haven’t put on their light babyish voice), unnatural clothing that is supposed to look cute but nobody would ever wear, etc etc.

A real slice of life show isn’t supposed to be romanticized because that’s not a part of life. That’s what fiction does, fiction romantifies things, but if it’s supposed to be slife-of-life then it’s not supposed to romantify things. Not that I dislike romantifications in slice of life since it does make it more interesting and gives it more appeal, but it removes the slice of life part in it.

• By intelligent, I mean that there’s a lot going on. I’m an animator so I love anime on multiple levels. K-on’s a work of art to me because I can understand the level of thought and time that went into the subtle movements of the characters, and being someone who reads body language, I can tell how the characters think by the way they move. It’s there, and you catch it unconsciously if you’re not looking for it. That’s why so many people love it, because it truly DOES deserve the love. Now them ‘fucking around’ is entertaining mostly because of their dynamic. It’s nothing new, of course, it’s been done before, but this variation of it feels more natural than most, and as such sometimes you just want to see life from another perspective. That’s the concept of the slice of life style anime, is to remind you that other people have lives and thoughts and exist outside of you, but the fact that it’s animated allows it to have this romanticized aspect to it.

• @9:19

There are a lot more things far worse pointless than that. Not that I care about pointless shows since it’s just entertainment.

@6:28

As much as I do love Yuri stuffs.. No. Just no. There is no lesbian thing going on but rather just implications.

• K-on characters

Intelligence

You kidding me? They’re dumber than most girls in anime. They’re just not trip over and show panties clumsy kind of persons. They just do shit and miraculously make shit work when it matters. It’s kinda funny that it is considered a slice of life show when Yui manages to play the guitar by practicing by herself and not really knowing what she’s doing or how to do notes (nor knowing what they are, how to do them and how to read them). Sure they admit that they aren’t good, but she is still way too good for her knowledge of guitars and music.

The desires these days isn’t for character oriented plots in general. But the desiers amongs the people that actually pay for anime is that, and porn.

They don’t really have plots “four girls creates a band and tries to become good but really just eats cake and fucks around”, that’s not what I’d call a plot. Progression is of course more realistic because there isn’t all that much to progress with and what they first and foremost want to do is show you these cute moe-blobs doing cute things, which they do excellently.

With all that said I don’t dislike K-ON and slice of life shows in general. But it’s certainly overrated. First half of the second season was horeshit though.

• “There were plenty of good older titles which had ero – Cat’s Eye, Lupin, Cobra, etc. What we see now is that these good ero containing anime have died out in favour of moe-anime, now the industry staple.”

Completely agree. He’s talking to you K-ON!

• Well, honestly the girls are cute because of how they act. That’s kind of the point. They are normal everyday girls and were designed as such and were popular because they had character. People complain about lack of plot depth, but that’s because the desire these days is for character-oriented plots in general. People call that the ‘moe boom’ but really what guys like with female characters is to see relatively intelligent females and their interactions with whatever.

Plot-based stories most of the time tend to pepper character moments in, and aren’t conducive to expanding character in untrained hands. The styles in which anime like K-on and Working and such are much more conducive to just being with the characters. They both actually DO have plots, but they’re not in your face like an ancient demon, and progression is more realistic in a real world scenario. So when people complain of ‘no plot’ they’re actually complaining in those cases about there being no ‘epic plot.’

• While his statement is a bit vague he is not really wrong. Why does K-ON! Sell so well? It’s because the girls are so cute. And what makes every porn maker produce dozens of still images and porn mags? Exactly the kind of cute characters you’ll find in shows like K-ON! The innocent cute and everyday girls that you’ll find in that cast. And to top it there is a lesbian amongst the cast and two beach scenes and whatnot.

Angel Beats was more or less rescued by the sex doll called Rei Ayana- I mean Kanade/Angel/Tenshi.
