A boy who grew bored of stoning a homeless man instead opted to scald him with boiling water as he slept, saying it was “fun” watching his reaction.
The victim of the attack was a visually and speech impaired 67-year-old homeless man, and apparently made the Chiyoda park his home, by some accounts helping to keep it clean.
The boy, a third year middle schooler from Chiba, had apparently taken up throwing stones at the homeless man a week before the attack – “It was fun watching his reaction… it soon escalated though.”
Escalate it did – his altercations with the man continued and he hatched the plan of using hot water on the man.
He filled a juice carton with boiling water provided at a nearby convenience store (for instant noodles and similar), and then went to the homeless man, who was sleeping on a bench in the park, and threw the boiling water on his upper body.
The attack left the homeless man with severe scalding on his neck and shoulders.
The boy was less than remorseful:
“I went too far. I should have just stuck to throwing rocks at him. I did it as it was fun watching his reaction.”
Police charged him with assault.
Reportedly the boy was accompanied by a gang of 7 classmates who looked on from a distance – they have not been charged.
Japan has few laws against vagrancy, and homeless and piles of their belongings can be seen (and often smelt) in most central Tokyo localities – in many cases rather than tackle the problem directly, authorities attempt to indirectly mitigate it by introducing “anti-homeless” street furniture, chiefly in the form of uncomfortable and oddly shaped public seating.
This can be seen in the photos above (note the armrest in the middle of the bench, to discourage people from lying on it) – it does not seem to have been very effective in dissuading the man in question from making the park his home, however.

The whole old-age vs new-age issue in Japan is really sad considering there was a day when the elderly were treated better than this. As for treatment of homeless in general, it has always been pretty bad in Japan apparently, especially the way they try to segregate homeless like they're animals instead of trying to reform or put them at a proper housing.
I agree with the people advocating for that kid to be boiled alive, but this problem goes down to the social level and in the ugly dark corners of Japanese society. And this level of class segregation and maltreatment of homeless might be one of the biggest civil issue Japan faces today.
America is not void of homeless mistreatment etc. Talk about confirmation bias, and besides an eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind, two wrongs do not make a right, slippery slope etc.
I agree. Places like Boston and Louisiana have some of the most overt cases of a government-run segregation of demographics (let's face it: Whites/Asians vs Hispanic/Black) and such. I'm not saying it isn't ugly elsewhere in the world, though places like Belgium makes a fun sport out of hating the other half.
If anything though, I still kind of see where those policy makers are coming from: This is not an easy issue to solve and segregating, at first, is a temporary fix, but mostly for the 'better half'. Now only if governments around the world realize that the poor MUST be taken care of and people in general has a human right to a job, career and a living, things could get better down the road. Eventually, all nations will have to face this fact or otherwise fall to a yet another bout of insurrections like in the early 1900's where monarchies fell left and right in Europe and helped create World Wars in the process.
While taking care of the homeless is a noble deed, implementation, funding and public acceptance is one hell of a challenge.
I'd doubt a large percent of a population would help out their poorer kind, especially if they are having a hard time surviving themselves.

I have got to say that as an American what you just wrote makes me sick. There should be no regret. We did not go too far. If anything Japan should thank us. If the nukes were not dropped then many many more lives would have been lost. America would have taken the mainland and then where would Japan be?
