Eco-terrorist group Sea Shepherd is being accused by one of its own captains of having deliberately sunk its own vessel in an effort to frame the Japanese and make for better TV.
Peter Bethune, the Sea Shepherd captain who was arrested and detained in Japan for 5 months after he illegally boarded a Japanese whaling ship on the high seas, has apparently become disillusioned with the organisation, which he subsequently left.
He now alleges that the organisation’s “morally bankrupt” founder Paul Watson ordered him to sink the Ady Gil in order to “garner sympathy with the public and to create better TV.” Watson himself is a wanted fugitive.
He claims the ship was not heavily damaged by the collision with the whalers – “It was definitely salvageable, it was still rock solid from the engine room back.” Western media widely portrayed the ship as having been “sunk” by the Japanese.
Bethune also criticises the scaremongering tactics so integral to the success of environmentalist groups: “I think an organisation that relies on public money and public generosity to survive has an obligation to be honest.”
Sea Shepherd for its part denies it ordered him to scuttle the vessel – although strangely the wording of the denial does not seem to deny that the ship was deliberately scuttled:
“No one ordered him to scuttle it. Pete Bethune was captain of the ‘Ady Gil’, all decisions on the ‘Ady Gil’ were his.”
Sea Shepherd claims it distanced itself from Bethune after the incident in order to ensure he received a light sentence. At the time of the incident it attempted to bring charges of piracy against Japan.
Bethune did at least receive a light sentence (although he was detained for 5 months) – a Tokyo court convicted him of obstructing commercial activities, trespass, vandalism and carrying a knife, imposing a 2 year suspended sentence.

Claims of Ady Gil being "salvageable" - I think anyone with an understanding that ice-cream is not made in the oven, would recognise other-wise.
Watching the footage of it actually happening, that is the collision between the Ady Gill and the Shonun Maru II; the reactions of the Ady Gil crew are anything but deliberate or planned, some of them were almost thrown overboard due to the impact.
International Maritime Law states that the larger vessel must allow for the smaller vessel to pass (footage shows the Nissin Shonun II changing course toward the Ady Gil)
Critics of the anti-whaling groups who argue that Japan is not at all to blame in the issue of overfishing/whaling - that is not the issue! we are talking about the humane treatment of an intelligent, self-aware mammal. (tuna is now illegally traded in Japan due to overfihing)
There is absolutely no way to slaughter this creature without causing it great distress. (try impailing something with the power cable from your computer)
What was the Shonun Maru doing there in the first place? The International Whaling Commission prohibits whaling in the Southern ocean, south of 40 degrees south (south of 60 degrees south between 50 degrees and 130 degrees west) not that Japan recognises this.

But Considering that Japan has literally bribed smaller, poorer African and Southeast Asian nations participating in the International Whaling Commission it comes as no surprise that any sanctions placed on Japan cannot be formally recognised let alone enforced.

The whales are being killed in the same way cattle is killed and is regarded as the most humane way possible, it is a spear to the head that sends an electric shock directly to the brain, kinda like what happens on a proper electric chair, or again, the way cattle is killed for human consumption.

Uhm... so, yeah, here it goes: no, cattle is, in fact, NOT an endangered wild creature that is harpooned, reeled onto a metal platform for the slaughter as it frantically tries to escape despite the pain of resisting the pull of a harpoon's spikes and then butchered whilst still alive.
No, cattle suffer a different experience, indeed. When slaughtered according to regulations in just about anywhere in the West, a two-staged process is carried out, which, very simply, involves stunning the animal, firstly, and then killing it as quickly and cleanly as currently possible, secondly.
Granted, this is not observed everywhere nor always, but it is the law in the better places of the world to look up to. It's regrettable when it's criminal conduct and still something to correct. But when it's systemic and not even considered wrong to begin with... you go look up their dolphin hunting and slaughter, while you're at it, it's actually worse than the whales, difference being dolphins aren't endangered (yet).
Actually Maritime Law does NOT give right of pass to the small vessel.
What it states correctly is that a small vessel has much more maneuverability and less inertia and thus it is the one that has to get out of the way from the bigger vessel.
If you don't know what is inertia don't bother writing anything at all.

Seems obvious to me. From a maneuvarability standpoint, Ady Gil basically threw themselves under a speeding train. The Japanese ship physically could not have avoided them (or even deliberately hit them... they're too small to see at that range!)
It's the law of the sea. If your boat is smaller, you get the F out of the way. Their little stunt endangered the lives of two crews and all of sea shepherd should go to jail for it.
