Ore no Imouto “Betrayed The Eroge Industry!”

A scene in which the imouto heroine of “Ore no Imouto” is revealed to be the owner of a substantial collection of eroge (most of which were real titles) has stirred up a storm of criticism, with commentators accusing the show of giving eroge opponents an excuse to push for a ban, and with industry insiders supposedly angry that the show never told them how it would be depicting their products.

The issue stems from the first episode of popularly acclaimed imouto anime “Ore no Imouto” – the little sister of the title is revealed to literally be a closet otaku, and one with a substantial collection of adult games.

As she is in fact a middle-schooler, just how she acquired these titles and what she is doing playing them soon became a major issue – not because there is anything objectionable about a young girl taking a healthy interest in sex, but because it might be used by the opponents of the industry as evidence the industry is marketing its products to minors.

The majority of the games featured in the stack are in fact real titles:

The show apparently received permission to use the likenesses of the games:

ore-no-imouto-eroge-collector-020.jpg

ore-no-imouto-eroge-collector-021.jpg

There are concerns this might be used as a sign that the companies concerned endorse the notion of a minor enjoying their products, or that anime itself should become the target of censorship for “promoting” such unwholesome behaviour, however common it might be for minors to have access to pornography.

There are also allegations that the show did not disclose how it would be portraying the games when it sought permission from the companies concerned.

A self-proclaimed “eroge industry insider” appeared on 2ch to lengthily harangue the show’s producers for “betraying the industry”:

They should at least have included an explanatory disclaimer, but they included nothing.

[…]

The anime company explained, and we believed them and were completely betrayed. We’ll never cooperate with them again.

[…]

The original [light novel] certainly was pretty extreme, but we never thought that would find its way into the anime.

Even just showing smoking on TV is not allowed, and yet they come out with a middle-schooler obsessed with buying eroge…

[…]

We didn’t receive any fees and this doesn’t really have any advertising value either.

Such concerns are not entirely without foundation – politicians have shown considerable willingness to lie about the content of such works in order to push for a ban.

There is no law against minors playing eroge as such, although a variety of regulations may apply to how and to whom they may be sold.

Instead, the eroge certification system relies on “voluntary restraints” and industry-run certification groups – in other words, the industry is expected to keep a low profile and make a good show of self-censorship if it wants to avoid punishing restrictions being imposed by government.

Generally these “voluntary restraints” are informally enforced as strictly as any law; mainstream publishers are terrified of any depiction of under-age drinking or smoking, or anything which “glorifies” crime – although, strangely, scenes of young boys enjoying pornography on the sly seem to feature frequently, to say nothing of real crimes.

As the controversy surrounding the industry response to feminist demands for a ban on their products indicates, eroge companies prefer to rely on sheer obscurity to protect them from legal attacks – thus it is easy to see why they might object to their new-found publicity in Ore no Imouto.

Question: Why shouldn't minors see porn? Girls don't watch porn and yet they still manage to get pregnant at 14...

Yeah I think they're too exaggerated about this. I see this show just for fun, and I don't think underages will buy eroge just because they watch this anime.. that's ridiculous. The information about the eroge is not very explicit anyway...

And IF the underages wants to play eroge, they don't have to come to the store and buy it, that's not the only way they could get their hands onto it, (blatantly speaking) they can DOWNLOAD it via internet for free..!

And I don't think any underages played eroge will ensure to have their public morale broken, Even people who didn't play eroge could become criminal (rapist, robber, etc)

Konata is a perfectly fine girl. Playing eroge and watching anime didn't turn her into a maniac serial killer or rapist. We should make eroge and anime mandatory, they build character. ^_^

Actually, the girls who don't watch the porn get pregnant more often than girls who do.
They don't know what's going on, they're more vulnerable. They just get pulled along by the guy.

Girls who do watch porn on the other hand at least know that a condom should be used, or make the guy cum outside.

If it's illegal for minors to look at porn, it should be illegal for adults to look at porn.. If porn 'ruins' a kid's mind (like most people put it), it will still 'ruin' an adult's mind as well.

Of course I don't endorse them making it illegal for everyone, but they need to stop making excuses.

You know, It's funny that in LS, Konata explicitly stated she played H-games, and for about half of the Anime she couldn't legally buy them. Nobody made such a big deal of it then! The fact that you see real Eroge this time really doesn't make a difference in implications to me, but aparently for some reason, it does.

Also, if only the H-game industry would actually put this much energy into fighting militant feminists and their own government, instead of "dirty gaijin" or Anime that portray them, they be in a lot better of a place than they are now, most likely with quite a lot less restrictions placed on them. But I guess this is just wishful thinking on my part.

Well, Konata did so under parental supervision. There's plenty of things that are okay'd or at least grandfathered if it's "supervised".

When I was in driver's ed, a state trooper talked to the class, and she explicitly stated that it was legal for minors to drink in the home under parental supervision. i.e. kids having wine with dinner is totally legit in the US, even if it's not a popular practice like it is in France.

They are spineless how do you expect them to put up a real fight? It's funny if you think about recent news concerning the japanese government being spineless, too.

If you think even longer it's not even a surprise, seeing how most japanese with pride and stuff killed themselves in the past. Only the spineless survived.

There's an easy reaon for that. Politicians are mere puppets to "entertain" the masses and divert their attention from real problems (economy). If they lie all the time, finally people will lose interest and thus become easy to control brainless shells that won't ask difficult questions like "Why is there money for war, election campaigns, companies etc. if there isn't money for healthcare, schools etc."

while i don't disagree with the sentiment, the problem is how are they going to "bitch slap" and feminazis?

what are they supposed to fight with?

they've got a government full of politicians that are perfectly happy and willing to cave into any pressure without even attempting to question what they are caving to or putting up any sort of fight.

and they have a judicial system that has no interest in being any sort of legal check or defender of law against the legislators (think 3rd branch of power to counter the executive or the legislative).
if the legislators cave, the judiciary will fall in line and cave with them in an instant.

so you've got an industry that has no way to fight.
they already know that the powers that be that should be at least trying to stand up for them would much rather pathetically appease corrupt (as they're mostly using their cause to embezzle money) foreign morality police.

Well I wasn't being serious, however:

In terms of having a government full of caving into pressure, that's understood, but they can just as easily cave to pressure from businesses that help fund them. As stated in a previous news article, any ban on eroge would be detrimental to many businesses in Tokyo - to what extent is uncertain, but the effect would still be noticeable. Now if this comes into conflict with the profits of any "Zaibatsu" esque companies they're going to provide backing to their child companies that produce said eroge because once you promote laws of morality it's essentially pushing a snowball down a hill - it might expand greatly.

Though with the rise in elderly and Japan's supreme court's conservative nature, I can't help but understand how you're right.
