As is the time honoured custom with anything related to Love Plus, Manaka Takane‘s legion of lonely suitors have celebrated her virtual birthday (on the 5th of October) with some enthusiasm.

That would depend entirely on who you speak with. I have met entirely too many normals who consider e.g. the entirety of Japan ludicrous and something to laugh at. A western example: For many Europeans, during G.W. Bush's years as president the USA quickly turned from something to feel compassion for, to a retarded embarrassing Lenny-type cousin you were so exasperated with you didn't have the energy to do anything but laugh at.

And don't forget other emotions: There is a great amount of people who are downright pissed off at the attitudes in some cultures, even among western countries. e.g. North Korea is a country "normal" people frequently are displeased with.

Twisting words at their convenience, that's a troll for you.

People get into a lot of mainstream crap just for the sake of being "with the crowd" or because they look more socially acceptable than other hobbies. These kind of people are the sheep who just jump into the current popular bandwagon; the interests themselves aren't sheepish.

    Comment by Anonymous
    03:33 08/10/2010 # ! Neutral (0)

The majority of the people make a society. I make the society. So does he, and he and he. Just because we follow a set of rules and guidelines for living doesn't make us "sheep following a bandwagon". The society functions because of the contributions of each person, establishing what is known as the norm. If you don't want to work with society, then shut yourself out and go live in a cave. Oh right, you can't. Because you need all the comforts of the modern world, which is made up by society.

So shut the fuck up and stop acting like you're cool because you "deviate from the norm". Watching anime, reading manga, or geeking out on the next fucking moeblob is okay. Worshipping a fictional 2D character to the extent of offering them food and making a shrine for them for their every "birthday' just makes you a creepy sonovabitch.

You know, I never really understood this line of logic. Every time I see any video or post on 'Competitive Eating' there will be someone who says things like 'think of the kids in Africa!'... or something to that effect.

Seriously, you mean to say that you yourself are not indulging in a comfortable lifestyle of having three meals a day? Do you donate money, food and clothes to people in Africa or the Middle East? How hypocritical can you get?

I'm not saying that we shouldn't care about the people who are starving or poor, it's just that we live in different parts of the world, in completely different contexts, in completely different cultures. What's the use of comparing or complaining when nothing is going to be done or changed?

Besides, it's not like the food gets wasted or anything.

    Comment by Anonymous
    22:30 06/10/2010 # ! Neutral (0)

Donate money yes, don't waste food and eat what's enough for me yes (and I don't eat 3 meals a day all the time, because it isn't necessary if I reach daily recommended values.)

I'm not one of the superior zealots who go around selflessly promoting causes, but you know "your line of logic" seems to be that nobody will ever care or something. Some people do, I would think it's generally disappointing and frustrating that it's considered "hypocritical" when I actually do what I write. And the money spent on this fictional character, it certainly can go to charity.

Are you happy now knowing you shot a hypocrite like me? Must be charming to know your inner ego is stroked, and you will be feeling really good that evening when you get +1.0.

    Sigh.

It's certainly weird... but creepy? What's so creepy about having fun and eating cake? The occasion people choose to do so seems a bit arbitrary to me. Some people celebrate egg-laying hares, or a preacher nailed to a cross, or a manifold of even more silly or horrible things. Compared to that, celebrating a fictional birthday is an innocent pass-time.

At this point, it's an English word and a Japanese word, really, like sushi, samurai, ninja, karaoke, geisha, and so on.

Do you go up to people talking about singing karaoke at a bar and tell them they're pronouncing it wrong?

    Comment by Anonymous

    @19:28

It may not be a perfect essay, but he brings up several good points. The main gist of his "rebuttal" is simply that those who go around harping about the "poor starving children" are themselves not lifting a single finger to help them. Such behavior is hypocritical, and they should probably stfu or do some charity work before criticising others.

Secondly, to say "otaku" is not an english word is, at the moment, correct. However, the english language is constantly changing. Given enough usage, "otaku" may one day become an entry in any official dictionary. You can say that it is grammatically wrong to write it as "otakues", because in english, the "-es" form is only used when the word ends with a "z, x, ch or s". The grammatically correct way to write it in english IS, in fact, "otakus".

To all the idiots comparing this to celebrating Christmas/Hanukkah/whatever, you're totally missing the fucking point. We don't mock those celebrations because they're not just to celebrate a "fictional being's birthday" (and even that's subject to fucking debate), the whole point of celebrating those is to spend time and have fun with your loved ones.

By that logic, kimono and ninja are plural on their own as well, but the English plurals are "kimonos" and "ninjas," whereas samurai and sushi have the same singular as plural forms.

That wasn't what I was taught in Sunday school. Regardless, these people who celebrate Manaka's birthday on the internet do engage in a form of collective celebration, although often (but not always) via the web, rather than in person. And they're celebrating something they actually care about with like minded people.

"Collective celebration" is just a fancy way of saying you don't have friends to share an event with so you take pictures and show what you're doing to the world because no one else won't celebrate it with you.
