The controversy surrounding the production of Final Fantasy XIV has further intensified with the news that Square Enix is seeking Chinese speakers to run the game’s servers.

Their Japanese recruiting site has posted new jobs – server, database, and network engineers for Final Fantasy XIV – and alongside the usual qualifications they stress the desirability of being able to speak Chinese, which has added to the suspicion that much of the development was outsourced to China:

Aside from the obvious conclusion about the language skills required, there are any number of questions being raised as to why Square Enix is only just starting to recruit critical system administrators after the game has actually been launched and not before.

    Alright its official

FF13&FF14 never existed, the Final Fantasy series ended at FF12

At which point Square Enix was invaded by Chinese Zombies (which will also be the plot of Dead Rising 3)

FFXIII still exists. That shit was gorgeous, I don't give a tumbling fuck if it was Japanese, Chinese, Mexican or whatever who made it. There was no truly good reason to demote it to complete 'shit' as most ignorant children have, just because it wasn't another FF7 or something. Story was entertaining, the characters were as well, the writing was good, the graphics were beyond incredible in the ways that it counts, and I considerably enjoyed it for what it was as a game, because I wasn't foolishly expecting them to make exactly the same game as they used to.

FFXIV on the other hand, I'm having trouble calling that anything innovative whatsoever... granted I haven't played it, but even without Sankaku's propaganda, it really didn't give off a very good feeling.

So a game to be released worldwide with japanese brand but made in china (quality...)

Not sure why 14:58 was downvoted. FFX too was an exceptional game and I'm sick and tired of ignorant, childish idiots demoting it to crap because they just don't understand the 'laughing scene.' Yes, you were embarrassed, and you were meant to be embarrassed. All the characters were meant to be embarrassed. It was the whole fucking point. It wasn't bad acting, it wasn't purposeless, it just required too much thought for most of the mindless idiots out there who played it to understand what it was doing for the characters.

Someone clearly doesn't like that the Spoonyone dissed on his game for a pretty valid reason. Why was that scene nessesary? Really? Did we need to be embarrased? Do you play games to be embarrased? What did them embarrasing all the other characters do for their relationship? Did it help them grow in any way? Did the other characters learn anything? The answers are, It wasn't, no, no, no, nothing, no, and no.

FFX was a pretty good game don't get me wrong, but every time that part comes on I think of scrubbing a shitty toilet and close my eyes till its over.

And because this has nothing to do with the main post, Poor Squaresoft, ate Enix and is now dying of lung cancer. With alzheimers.

I make it a point to avoid China-made products as much as possible, unless there is absolutely no way to avoid it.

For example, when I buy computer parts I ask where the factory is and I go for brands that have their factory based in anywhere but China.

But when it comes to consoles there are unfortunately no alternatives because all consoles are now made in China, so I have to just go with it.

I speak/read/write Mandarin natively and functional Japanese. I'm currently a software engineer (experience in the full SDLC), and have a degree in computer science. I've worked with beta testers, and am familiar with designing immersive user (perceived) experience.

My honours project combined machine vision/intelligence and computer graphics (OpenGL and DirectX) to create real-time, interactive augmented reality.

I'm also an ex-student of traditional (sketching, painting) as well as digital (Maya/Photoshop) art.

I used to play/compose music on the Yamaha electronic organ, and still play the acoustic guitar as a hobby. I have some experience in FLStudio (composed several techno music for my games).

Before college, I created several games that made it to the students finals in APICTA (Asia Pacific ICT Awards).

Do you think I stand a chance?

Sorry, many new generation Chinese, especially from Hong Kong can speak better English than some Japanese in general. I am not saying this because just like that, it's more because how the Japanese teach their students to write and speak English language. I am convinced that many Japanese can speak much better English if they change the methods for teaching English in Japan. I hate those people who said that the Japanese can only speak/write "Engrish". Why laugh at them instead of correcting and educating them.

I believe, from what I heard before when researching being an english teacher there for a year, that you're only supposed to book-read the english and not actually make an effort to explain to them the accents or even really break them from Katakana speaking habits. I could be (and hope what I heard was) wrong, but it does seem that way. Granted, it could simply be they don't care much about learning it as they don't quite have a concept of what opportunities will open up in their future because of it. I know none of my friends or myself considered language as anything more than another class, but then again we were suburban white kids... the sad reality is unconsciously we already understood the world to be our oyster, as proven by the fact that I even know that saying...

Now that I'm mature enough to understand the mental benefits of multi-linqual understanding, I lack the money and/or time to really attempt it.

"The chinese don't speak english very well"
Neither do the Japanese...and also TC-man I agree with you. Many younger Chinese do speak English very well; many of my younger relatives in China speak it quite fluently with the correct grammar. The only problem they have is pronounciation. And "Cheap labour for cheap quality"? Seriously, its just simple supply and demand. The cheaper the labour the more demand for it. The computer you guys are using right now is probably over 70% Chinese made. I challenge you to try to live off non-Chinese made products for a month. Let's see how fat that goes...

The average Japanese can't speak English any better than any better than a 2-year-old from an English-speaking country. However, that doesn't mean that there aren't people that have native pronunciation of both English and Japanese (very possible if you sustain an environment where a child hears native speakers of both languages throughout their childhood).

I dont think anything other than english will be the "language of the future", because its the easiest language to learn.

English is my 2nd, french my 3rd (cant really speak it though ^^) and japanese is going to be my 4th language.
Still remember how i learned english as a kid by playing RPGs with dictionaries. ^^

If i would be a few years older, i would have learned russian at school.

    >>Well, it is my native language so I can't really judge how hard it is.<<

Simple. If lots of people from //insert country// don't speak //insert language// very well the language is difficult. Or there are lots of stupid folks. Or possibly both.

Personally I hate languages and never bothered to learn any... but I speak a few and am not a native english speaker. It just happened. Learning is boring, but if you see what you can do with the language (i.e. you really want to watch anime for free) you can manage to understand english in about six months.
