@Schrobby: It's actually not about the oil, but the strategic significance (for all 3 parties involved). While I'm pretty sure none of the parties actually WANT a war (it's gonna cost too much because they're all too powerful), if one does break out, having control of the islands will confer a significant strategic and logistical advantage.

Normally, if a small fisher boat collides with a big military vessel, who would you think started the aggression?

Did the fishermen on the fishing boat want to intimidate the soldiers with their nets and fish? Or maybe did the military vessel want to intimidate the fishermen with their guns?

Add in the fact that the military vessel filmed everything standardly and the government is withholding the tapes while everything is going apeshit around them makes everything very suspicious to me.

Bottom line: there is too little information to form a solid opinion on anything. While Japan is generally more trustworthy than China, how they are handling everything does rouse some suspicion.

China is a conventional military that will use conventional tactics. The US is having trouble in Afghanistan because the fighting there should be a police action, not an invasion and occupation of the country. The Chinese wouldn't do too well against the best conventional military in the world, probably with the support of Nato.

I don't know but I think having a war may be impossible. They should have learned by now that war results in nothing but both side loosing and many people dying. And I bet the war is gonna last only a second with everyone firing their A-bombs. Japan doesn't have an offensive army(they have a tiny army for the purpose of defense only), America is promoting peace between Iraq and Israel and I bet Europe want nothing to do with war.
