To be fair, the undead are no strangers to the West - at least not within Western's "Strange West" subgenre. From the Jonah Hex comics to the Deadlands tabletop RPG, there's long been plenty of "Cowboys & Dead Men" stories around.
But alas, I agree that the Dead seem particularly unrestful as of late. Not being a fan of rabid decaying cannibals myself, I don't think I approve of it - but perhaps it could bring some semblance of story elements back into anime. Surely the sight of dead people walking isn't by itself as compelling to the average consumer as that of cute underage girls? At least I hope not.
