Popular shoujo mangaka and aspiring sniper Mayu-tan (or Mayu Shinjo) has published a rather convincing picture of herself cosplaying K-ON!’s Yui Hirasawa.
That a 37-year-old is able to convincingly cosplay an 18-year-old certainly says something favourable about Mayu-tan’s looks – although pedants (and Mayu-tan herself) will note that the guitar is not 100% accurate.

Looks kinda like a schoolgirl with a guitar. Not bad. Not something that mentally screams YUI to me, though.
Of course she looks young here. Anyone looks young after a good photoshop, no? Look at her unshopped pictures and I guarantee that you'll lose your erection.
at least is better than the 48 years old trap cosplay
for someone that old, that not bad. although photoshop surely had a hand here aswell.
Barf.
THAT GUITAR IS THE WRONG ONE!!!
Oh, wait... She already said that... :P
Still, way to go for this lady with her convincing cosplay. That's something to respect. Even if she fails at sniping.
True, her guitar is not accurate. Yui has a Gibson Les Paul Standard in Heritage Cherry Sunburst finish, while Mayu-tan holds a Les Paul in Iced Tea finish, which is lighter and more yellow than Yui`s quite red one. But Gibson`s Iced Tea finish is a little lighter and less yellow than in guitar Mayu-tan is holding, so it probably is a Tokai Love Rock model, which is available in exactly same finish the photo is showing.
Pity we can`t see writing in the headstock.
Still, well done from her!
A bit too chubby for my taste...
Now if she could actually play that thing
THAT would hot,lol
Although judging by the way she's holding it
(and common sense w/ cosplay models)
I seriously doubt it
If you cosplay Yui (I mean, Nodoka) while holding the sniper rifle, I would give you a go.
37 really? she looks too young O_O
nice chord, bro
She looks nothing like Yui.. even the hair ornament is wrong. It should be yellow goddamnit.
You can't play with nails like that!
You're talking about someone who can't even hold a sniper rifle right.
She only does 'posing', not 'acting' or 'cosplaying' in its purest definition.
Sankaku gives my guitarist side a headache. OK, here we go, A. Her posture is usable, B. Her left hand has nails far too long for fretting, C. Her left hand isn't fretting anything, and is muting the strings. D. Her right hand technique is completely wrong for Houkago Tea Time's style of music, not to say it's impossible to play rock by finger picking (see Jeff Beck), but Yui does uses a pick. E. As Artefact pointed out as did Mayu, the guitar is close but not right, Yui plays a Cherry Sunburst Les Paul Traditional. Finally, all the things I listed are all pretty much unimportant in the context of this cosplay. She obviously wasn't going for 100% accuracy, her hair being an obvious error. To pick apart this cosplay is idiotic, though I just did. LOL. So just let it be, she's only human.
Traditonal? I've never heard of that model. Don't you mean "Standard"?
The Traditional was introduced in 2008 along with the redesigned Standard. An obvious way to tell them apart is the tuners, the Traditional has a set of the old Kluson style tuners. Where as the Standard has locking tuners. Klusons are a dark cream sort of color, while the new tuners are silver. Of course this all based on the anime. I never read the manga. The manga was made in 2007, before the Traditional, but I'm assuming Yui as Mio, recieved an instrument change. Also, Yui's finish isn't the Cherry Sunburst finish in the manga apparently. Which supports my instrument change theory. Perhaps you should use "Google" before jumping to assumptions?
This has become quite entertaining! It’s true that I don’t keep up with the new flavors that Gibson and Fender introduce every month. But why should I when I own a 1974 Les Paul Standard, a 1975 LG-1, and a 1960 Stratocaster (blonde finish). If you need proof, I could take photos of these guitars in front of the Sankaku home page on my pc, along with close ups of the serial numbers. Just post an email for me to send it to. There is one stipulation. If I have to go through the trouble of dragging my stuff from under the bed to do this, then you must come back and post that you were a total fool for making erroneous assumptions.
In K-On! anime i have seen various model markings on Yui`s guitar, like "Standard" and "Traditional" and even no writing at all on truss rod cover, and "Fender" in place of "Gibson" in headstock. I am not sure, but there can have been even "Epiphone" written on the headstock in some occasion.
But guitar in the photo here is probably a Tokai Love Rock model, considering the color of body finish!
@ erochichi
Thanks for that info. I was wondering how my cousin "anon" thought that Yui's Les Paul was a "Traditional" model. You must be a player also, seeing that you noticed such small details. ^_^
Yet you don't have basic knowledge of Les Paul models? My respect for the instrument choice in K-On! has just diminished, the new Standard is garbage. Back on topic, any Wiki should not be used for fact checking, however, you did say the close up shows Standard on the truss rod cover. So I'll take your word for it. At any rate I can tell your guitar knowledge is lacking.
I took your advice. I checked the K-On wiki. They say "standard". I saw a close up Yui's Les Paul from the initial scene in the music store. It says "standard" on the truss rod cover. All of this stuff is really meaningless, but perhaps you should use you're own advice before jumping to conclusions. ^_^
indeed
Wow, 37.
WOw....
She looks more younger than her age....
Apperance can lie.... LOL
I concur...She looks pretty damn good for her age...
*imagines Yui with a Sniper Rifle zooming on some poor shmuck below her apartment*
This woman cant cosplay Yui, she should try Sawa sensei at least!
While I think she does a good Yui - its even her hair. A Sawako sensei would be good but it would have to be a Death Devil Sawako to really work. Mmmm...yes..that would work.
Hmmm...her Yui is fine but a Sawako sensei that would be nice too. A Death Devil Sawako - that would work.
So Yui may pass for a 37 year old hag. SanCon has gone down the dumps! She's not even half-naked
This is healthy mangaka here... but I wish for a fine camera pics. Most of the pics seem from cellphones...
"That a 37-year-old is able to convincingly cosplay an 18-year-old who looks like 14"
Fix'd for you.
I don't know about you, but to me, Yui looks legitimately 18.
The fact that a 37 year old can portray an 18 year old already says something about Asians appearing younger than their actual age.
Age matters jack here.
What matters is with that setup, she'd be better off cosplaying Nodoka.
Damn, I agree. (O.o)
"..Asians appearing younger than their actual age."
Which is one main reason to be proud of when someone diss us for looking like a teen when we're 20+, at least 10 years later in the future, we would still look like 20.
Note: Doesn't apply to Bieber.
i'm in my mid twenties and i get hit on by 14 to 16 years old.
^_^;
i can't buy 'games' without showing them my id...
Lol u srs?
At least she holds the guitar correctly..
you've never held a guitar, don't you?
Yes, invisible strap I know. At least its not upside down.
Okay I lol'd
That's the first thing that came to mind.
People marrying Asian persons young are quite lucky. They stay the way they are ^^
Ah, a K-On! Movie has been announced.

I'm already scared to read the comments for that soon-to-come news post...
If it lacks of Mugi and Ichigo, we RIOT..
Yui is never gonna be overdosed with cocaine and blow her head wth a shotgun in the ending so it doesn't matter to me. >.>
I'm eagerly waiting for this...
PREPARE FOR SHITSTORM!
Episode 21 Uncut: Yui accidentally cut her hair tooooooo short.
"That a 37-year-old is able to convincingly..."
- don't look at her hands...it will ruin the illusion and photoshop
The woman IS mangaka after all. That she uses the same male lead for each and every one of her work notwithstanding.
