PlayStation Move “Glaring” Design Flaw – “Play in the Dark!”

Sony’s PlayStation Move motion controller has enjoyed a successful enough launch, but that has not stopped some from ridiculing it for an apparent inability to function in brightly lit areas. Sony’s suggested solution: play in the dark.
Fortunately for Sony, not too much fuss has been made about the issue.
The technical explanation is likely that the unit’s camera is unable to track the motion of the controller’s ball (which glows for just this reason) under bright light due to contrast issues.
Whilst supplying a darkened room is probably no problem for most gamers, it is perhaps at odds with the casual-friendly image Sony is desperate to project.

PLay in the dark? everyone knows that you should not play in the dark because it affect your eyes
Yeah. Remember the disclaimer "Always watch/play this in a well lit room and keep a good amount of distance from the screen."
Kind of a contradiction.
If you guys actually pay attention to the video. The Move is warning that the conditions are too bright, and that it could possibly screw with gameplay, not that it WILL.
No one ever said to play in the dark, that's just the interpretation Artefact gave which you guys seem to take as the word of god. Well lit rooms are fine, it's cases where you were to use flood lights in your room or something that would screw it up, and even then, it'd have to be near the controller itself.
I'm not a big fan of the move or kinect, but if you actually pay attention to what it says, it's not THAT big of a deal, unless you decide to place all your lamps right next to the TV.....
why the hell are they having an outside ps3 party,
or better.. why puts a PS3 or nice TV in direct sunlight
If they like the outdoors so much.. go play real golf
This'd bother me more if it went and asked for brighter lighting.
I've come to avoid completly dark though (just slight lighting), 10+ hours of staring at the monitor/TV in the dark has started to hurt my eyes (used not to.. but I'm guessing I've got them permanently damaged now).
That's neither surprising or troubling... I would never use my PS3 outside, and I don't have high power industrial lighting in my game room, so I'm not too worried about that. Besides, anything that overpowered the color of the ball would also wash out my TV screen.
Next you're going to tell me it can't track the ball well when used underwater...
This needs dark room to play... I got the feeling that the PlayStation Move is designed specifically for otaku and to some extent, hikkis
Seriously, enough with this motion control gimmicks, millions of money spent only to give players more silly conditions just to play a game..
I hate to play with the lights off, it makes my eyes hurt.
So even for non-casual players this is a terrible move.
Piece of shit wiimote knockoff!
The wonders of Infrared must not yet have spread to Japan.
Your PS3 is not compatible with nature.
...except that it still functioned after ignoring the warning light. Drunken malcontent broskis playing sh*t-tier sports games shouldn't be allowed to handle this kind of equipment. Give them back their Wii and they can finish their gay DDR barbecue with ease.
I usually play in the dark anyways.
Gaystation Dildo®
i was actually surprised that it dosen't work. i thought they just need the ball for detection, no biggies though.
Not this shit again. I already replied to the idiots that made this video a while back, reminding them that the PS3 is a home console not an OUTDOOR CONSOLE!!! Who in their right minds play a home console outside? Oh wait, these guys already did. That makes them brainless retarded trolls that can't even read instructions manuals right.
i just bought a second controller .-.
Sounds like a great device for vampires.
What if Natal and Playstation Move merged?
Then what about people who were strapped to a chair in a bright room? LOL
ooooh, so that's what the gay looking blue ball is for....light in dark rooms, it makes sense now,lol
Puto subnormal. Siempre criticando todo lo que hace Sony. Hijo d eputa!
fanboy
Maybe they can do some kind of reverse light ball? Like, make a black cover for the ball and have the game track that instead?
that douche has irritating voice.
I smell a a new head line.... Boy kills mother while playing playstaion move. "they said play in the dark"...
It's not that surprising. The Wii also has trouble reading movements in brightly lit areas. And areas with a lot of reflective surfaces as well.
Well, playing with the curtains closed isn't bad. It creates more of a theatre atmosphere. C:
Dunno, I have big windows in my game room and Wii never been unresponsive. I played outside like that morons on the video and works perfect.
Are you sure? Wii doesn't even use camera & most of the detection is handled by the wii remote's sensor. The sensor bar provides 10 IR reference points and I don't think the remote can mistake them with some "bright lights".
Sounds like some dodgy claim to me.
Nope, it's true. My Wii is set up in a room with large bay windows, and at certain times of day, it's simply not possible to play. For example, if sunlight shines through the window onto a white surface near my television, or the lamp behind my TV is turned on, it confuses the remote's sensor. This problem can sometimes be resolved by playing with the settings, but if the light's too strong, then the game just has to go off.
The sensor bar can be replaced by a couple of candles; anything that provides enough IR light can be detected, and can interfere.
Odd, I've never had this problem and my censor is directly next to our large windows o-o
I totally used to use a pair of ceiling lights as a ghetto sensor bar when mine crapped out for a few weeks.
For any one that says wii doesn't use light it uses IR. You just contradicted yourselves. IR or Infrared IS LIGHT, it is just not on the visible spectrum for the human eye. In other words your wii sensors are glorified cameras without an infrared filter, and the wii mote is a glorified television controller. Same tech, used different.
P.S. Most any visible light also produces infrared and can confuse an infrared sensor.
Thats why true gamers dont use controllers without cables. ^^
Who wants to die because of wireless controllers not working correctly or their batteries are empty?
First playing naked for kinect and now playing in the dark?? what are these companies suggesting?!
There IS a reason why the controller is shaped like a glowing wang you know? They're trying to bring more female "gamers"! =D
It just needs a force feedback function to make it perfect. ^_^
games + women + glowing wangs =
= playing games with women + glowing wangs =
= gynecological examination
That's why there's a lightbulb on those dildos.
Naked... in the dark... wonder what's next..
Next is some p2p action. ^_^
press & pump!
plug & play!
push & pull!!!
Naked, in the dark and outdoors.
Naked, in the dark and outdoors, beating neighbor's dog with glowing wangs.
What's next? Insertion, of course.
Yea like everyone play with all lights on.
i don't think this is an issue. who plays outside?
This is a bit stupid... Who plays outside anyways? lol
My house haves lot of light (big windows, big hall, etc). Not everyone live in a cave.
I guess casuals do. I could never stand playing with lights on if I could help it though. The announcements in beginning of anime telling you to watch in a brightly lit room are just nuts!
Ask different people, get different answers..
I hate dark rooms. If it's dark, I start sleeping. That's the reason I bought myself floodlight, like the ones you see in stadiums, just for my room. It's really exciting to be in a room that's brighter than outside even in daylight.
Alone in the dark? Do not want!
I hate dark movies/games, thus I don't watch them. They always made me sleep anyway. Also, electricity is for free around here. Sorry, I had to rub it in. But it would be worth it anyway. Who needs food if one can get light?
Don't be mistaken, though. I like the dark. I can even see in really dark environments. But usually I fall asleep after awhile of sitting in the dark and watching TV or something.
@Anon: You discovered my secret. Oh well...
btw it's better for the eyes, that's what the warnings in TV are for. You can get blind earlier in life if you always watch TV or play games in dark rooms. Not like in you can get cancer from smoking, but more like in you can get a boner from watching pron.
"electricity is for free around here" and just where might that be?
even if "electricity is for free around here", using floodlight just for your own convenience. a bit too much dont you think?
i'm not gonna be all "environmental" about this but this a fine example of wasting electricity.
@hiei
Sorry, that will keep a secret. It's not a place open for anyone to live anyway.
@Anon: I need the light. It's no waste!
..and.. ever heard of energy-saving bulbs? In fact I am using less electricity for my flood light than most people do for their normal light. Yes, I do care for the environment and stuff. Light is needed. A car and elevators are not needed. I priorize light.
@Klingengeist
Bullshit. a 60W light blub working for 12 hours every day for 30 days, you burn roughly 22kWh. Now, plug a 12W energy saver, and you will burn 4.5kWh in the same time frame. Where I live, 1kWh = ~0.45 EUR, which makes the entire thing cost roughly 2 EUR per month. Even if electricity raises by as much as 50%, I won't have to starve to death just to pay for my lighting.
I would also agree that it's fear of Me
(except for the minerals and slicing tools part which, I assure you, would be kind of a rare phobia to come by in comparison with, well, the fear of the Dark.)
Fear of the Dark, eh? :P
It seems they should raise the prices for electricity in your country.
Also if you watch or play dark movies/games you wont see a shit if your room is lit.
Dim is ok, but not dark. I want to see what I'm doing.
A sufficiently bright room will always produce glare on a glossy screen even if the screen is pointed away from direct light and highly reflective surfaces. This is because all surfaces are reflective on some level.
The window of my dorm living room encompasses an entire wall, so the room is quite bright, even on a cloudy day. Even if I'm playing on my DS while facing the window, ambient light will still flood in and reflect off the white walls of the living room and plaster a reflection of my face onto both DS screens. It remains to be seen if Move is playable here.
Placing the TV in such a way that there are no reflections from windows or lamps is quite easy, you know.
what the hell is the fuss about, just about all television sets have glare, no1 wants to see their reflection on the screen due to sunlight or any light, it makes it hard enough as it is, so under the same circumstances, this isn't something to even complain about.
now you can argue that you wont be able to play during the day, now that is a worthy argument. but whether or not having lights on or wanting to see yourself because you have a floating eye that watches yourself from above or behind is ridiculous.
Clearly, the next motion controller will require you play whilst laying down.
In the dark you can't see the bikini clad girls playing... -_-
anon@01:16
You're going to try if move works with your glowing
joystick? ^_^
It seems to work in moderate lighting. Perhaps stage or studio lighting is an issue. This doesn't seem like it would be a problem for most gamers, casual or hardcore.
What happened to those reminders on anime (like Hayate no Gotoku) to watch TV in a brightly lit room? :/
Now Sony tells us to blind ourselves. Great. They should go f*ck themselves with the controller.
I don't need glow-in-the-dark condoms thanks to Radiotherapy. The ladies don't get pregnant and my penis glows in the dark. It's a Win-Win. ^_^
It does have a Vibration feature.
@schrobby...
YOU GAVE ME AN AWESOME IDEA! ... >///<
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KAu2jhJbr-E
That sould clear up any confusion. Anybody who thinks the PS Move is too insenstive just made something terribly wrong. I mean, he uses a portable sun in the video, but it still works!
There are glow-in-the-dark condoms, but using those would probably crash the move system. ^_^
@Yoshii-kun
"For that "glow in the dark" dildo effect!
Fun in the dark just got kinkier XD"
They should include glow-in-the-dark bikinis~
The requirement to play in the dark with PS3 motion detection is actually meant to prevent other players from noticing you're already naked for enhancing the motion detection for XboX360's Kinect which you might want to play next.
For that "glow in the dark" dildo effect!
Fun in the dark just got kinkier XD
