Black Lagoon mangaka Rei Hiroe has told manga pirates in no uncertain terms that they are thieving swine and that “I hope these guys pirating manga get pancreatic cancer soon.”

He made the comments on Twitter, the Internet’s great boon to journalists looking for incendiary soundbites:

I don’t want to link there so I won’t, but what kind of upbringing did these bums asking for every volume of a manga in a zip file get? That is… Well… I hope these guys get cancer of the pancreas or something soon.

[…]

I hope the imbeciles worshipping the imbecile who uploaded that are diagnosed with a never before seen and never to be seen again illness and die in the most ridiculous fashion, so as to be remembered only in medical annals by doctors laughing about how they died.

[…]

Hopefully all those idiots praising him all the time for upping these get busted by the police – I’d love to see the net gloating over their miserable fate.

The cherished delusion of manga and anime pirates that mangaka are indifferent to their actions, or in more deluded cases even that they are grateful for the “publicity,” appears to be fast dissolving under a hail of outraged invective from mangaka of all kinds – most creators would clearly rather be rid of fans too cheap to support their works.

Black Lagoon has been internationally available in English for some time for those wondering, although his comments were not addressed specifically at either Japanese or international fans – doubtless he feels all pirates everywhere deserve a lingering death as cancer wracks their diseased bodies.

I can see why he's getting pissed off, piracy is an issue. However, I wonder why he's directing his ire at the scanlators - publishers too big a target to piss off?

Because the scanlators are the ones spreading copies of his work to people who won't pay for them meaning he won't get money for something he created. It's all about money and trying to make a living creating manga.

Money spoils everything. You cannot take it with you after you die, only your works remain.

Without money you'll die earlier than you want and that the world is happy about your work after your dead means nothing. -.-

Depends on perspective. To some, it means everything. To others, it means nothing. Different people hold different values to being remembered after death.

You know the sad thing is I was gonna get more of this manga, as I own all the volumes of it out in english. But after this? I'll just get something else first. And then maybe finish acquiring black lagoon. Maybe.

Black Lagoon is fucking EXPENSIVE too. 17+ dollars canadian a volume (because they decided to print it fucking HUGE, and now it sticks out compared to the other manga on my shelves) so yea.

Lol, when he talks about people who "zip up the manga", he's also talking about the people who provide the RAWs, possibly more than he is talking about scanlators.

Maybe if they would release quality copies of the manga in the US for the same price as the JP version... I am not paying $12-15 for something that goes for ¥700-900 in Japan

The irony of this is that i bought Black Lagoon manga and DVD's from the US even paying extra for me to get it since i live in Europe and i did it only because i saw the anime first from a torrent and loved it so much that i had to have everything about it.
The mangaka say such shit because the publishers fill there minds that the sales and there money don't increase because of piracy. And publishers hate piracy not because there sales get destroyed but because they can't fool people by selling them shit with a nice cover since people can see something before they buy it now and they only buy it if they loved it.
They don't like the fact that they can't fool us anymore and steal our money with shitty promises on the cover.

Not that he would get that much money from foreign publications anyways. It's mostly publishers earning the big bucks and then somewhat keeping their mangaka alive with as little money as possible.

Sounds harsh and silly and all, but it's kinda refreshing to see the mangaka go head on with this issue.

People were laughing at Metallica and U2 for being at the forefront of open criticisms against illicit file sharing in early 2000's and looking back, they did help popularize the movement towards legitimate, official file sharing venues.

I know he got a thrashing in /a/ and other places, but he has all the right to get angry.

Metallica and U2 are a bunch of fucking sellouts.

All they wanted was to make more money, they wouldn't give a fuck if their albums covers were printed on human skin as long as it turns a profit.

And I think the mangacunt with his ridiculous rantings is the same kinda asshat. I am downloading and seeding more of this stuff specifically...just out of spite...

    Haha...eat this fuckwad !

yeah except mangakas dont make millions and are actually just barely getting by unless their series is popular enough.

as an artist myself, i know how hard it is to make comics and the compensation is just so-so. so i guess the rage over manga piracy is not completely unreasonable, but still, pancreatic cancer is a bit much..

You, sir, are exactly the kind of moron he's railing against (although I'll agree that the bit about cancer was over the top).

I read manga as it's released on sites like MangaFox, but I also buy the books when they're released in America (right now my buylist is Negima, Negima Neo, Seikon no Qwaser, Dance In The Vampire Bund, and .hack//Link). This is because when I enjoy a series, I want to support it's mangaka. There's nothing wrong with a mangaka wanting to ensure that his work that he/she produces for the purpose of profit actually makes a profit.

Also, keep in mind that with publishers (the REAL asshats) sucking these guys dry, they need all the profit they can manage, and piracy certainly dents that.

My own hope is to someday work in the Manga and Anime industry, probably as a writer if I can manage it. By that time the publishers may well have finally been kicked the fuck out and internet releases on sites with a monthly fee may well be the order of the day. And I already know that if I was in that position, I too would want to ensure that my work isn't crippled by piracy. No doubt there would be some, but I would still speak out against it, even having been a pirate of sorts myself. Because in the grown-up economic world, the simple fact is that people need to make money, and when they don't, good series die due to lack of funding (and it's happened before).

You're exactly the kind of ASSHAT that makes outsiders give SanCom a hard time, not to mention 2chan. Sit down, drink a nice hot steaming cup of STFU, and let the grown-ups discuss this like level-minded people.

^ Hate to break it to you pal, but if you buy a localized release, the mangaka will get practically nothing. You might as well just not buy at all (thus punishing the publishers for their messed-up licensing practices). If you really want to support the artist, import the original Tankoubons or even better, find his/her address and mail them some money.

I don't mind buying manga but the translations in the US releases are usually censored or the person translating is a bit to literal. Does he also hate people that buy them but then download from scan groups online? He gets his money and I get the type of translation I want.

Why don't they sell it digitally. For people who buy in bulk they cut the price by x% to reward customer loyalty. Also, maybe actually listen to customer suggestions regarding the translations.

Right, because everybody gets pissed off at the people paying you for your work (and selling it for you) over the people who steal it out-right and never give you a cent, even going so far as to take a good portion of your "fan's" respect (The thanks the scanalators and translators get for doing so). No matter how much a publisher jacks up the price or skims off of the profits, it will always be better than the douche who decides to make your hard work worthless by copying it and offering it for free.

Most japanese have quite bad manners.

They are also cowards so they never say things in your face (unless they have their "posse" with them) but just wait until you are not around and they say things about you that makes one wonder whoever came up with the rumour of them being nice people.

It's not without reason that so many kids in japanese schools kill themselves. They *ARE* nasty people that get off on insulting others. It's a social thing I there, I guess.

they realized long ago that you dont fucking sue fans, and basically kill them finationaly.

losing that 1 5$ net profit off a movie or a cd is never worth having 1000 other people not buy it because of your stupidity.

you have to bite the bullet and take it, you lost a sale from someone who probably wouldn't have bought it to begin with. the get that now, and only go after major hubs now, because in anyones eyes they are the bad guys, not the people who leach even if they technically are.

don't be ignorant just because there have been alot of mangaka artist complaining lately. it's their job besides complaining once in awhile is good to relive stress im pretty sure he didn't mean in that way. maybe he can concentrate on finishing the series after this fiasco.
