Videos purporting to show a working PS3 hack have surfaced, though their veracity is currently the subject of heated debate.

The supposed specs of the device, which takes the form of a simple USB drive:

Just whether the device works or is actually a scam is not yet clear – all the purported evidence comes from a small group of pirates, nobody seems to have heard of the device prior to its sudden unveiling, and apparently scam sites pretending to sell the device have already sprung up.

It's not that trivial. This may not be a USB flash drive, but a special USB controller designed to foil any attempts to read it on different hardware.

Actually it's possible to do the same on 360 with JTAG hack,however there , the process is much more complicated than this...

If this would let me play my installed games without putting the disc in, or something similar, I'm there. Keydiscs are so... 1988.
From the spanish site:
- They tested the dongle and works.
- It needs to just turn off in fat models, and unplug the AC cable from the console in the Slim models.
- Seems to be a software/usb dongle hack (Needs installation in the console and the dongle needs to be active to play/backup).
- You can do the backup to a usb dongle or to the internal hard drive (FAT 32 it is).
- You need any original game in the console (doesn't has to be the same game) to play a backup.
- In the example given, the game took 90 minutes to backup.
- Online game is possible.
- Updating games is not.
- You can't skip intro videos if you play from the backup.
- Disconnecting the dongle with the console turned on will make the console stops functioning.
Seems quite real to me.

Everything you mentioned was classified as "rumor" (a.k.a. "unconfirmed") on the site, and clearly identified as that... taking a "rumor" as something "true" by default is stoopid.

That mistranslated statement makes it look like it will brick the console. Actually a better translation is: "If you disconnect the dongle while the console is turned on, it will freeze or turn it off. And I think it might not be goof for either the dongle or the console"

It seems like alot of noobs dont know this but.... The PS3 has been hacked/cracked many times before! And the only way to know this is being knowledgeable in Japanese and joining their scene groups.... But most of the time when someone cracks/hacks the system.... Sony quickly puts out a software update to render the USB crack/hack useless.... But this is the first time I've ever seen a mod chip.... I wonder if the mod chip is used to stop the PS3 from the forced software updates?

When you put the usb in the ps3 the folder that said "Install Package Files" pops up. That could mean that it is not a debug console.

If you look at the last news about Geohot's claim that he had backed down from hacking ps3, the only thing I can think off at that time is he *actually* had successfully cracked ps3's protection but smart enough to cover his ass off from Sony (by making a 'you win, I can't crack it' statement) and taking profit from it (provide the tech to chinese factories, let them market it).
Even if it's an exploitable flaw from the hardware itself (sony could not patch it in any way without physically replacing some hardwares), new ps3s would be manufactured without this flaw. If this were true, in very near time we could see the current stock of ps3s are getting jacked up in them prices.
It's apparently a bug in the USB stack of the PS3 kernel. Patching it is simple enough once they get their hands of a copy, but it's already too late. Now that people can dump the kernel, they can easily seek out other flaws and exploit them as well.
A big complex peace of software like the PS3 kernel cannot be bugfree.

I own a PS3, and I hope it won't be hacked. The game market is one of the few markets I hate to see breaking down. Pirating DS games is ok though. That masses of shit shovelware isn't worth to buy. Only a few titles like Layton etc.

I own PSP, PS2, PS3, not a pirate disc here. All my shovelware PC games are on Steam, Impulse and some other shit, I always forget their name. GOG or something.
I could complain about piracy, but then, again, people with a lot of spare time and without money to buy games are too stupid and/or young to know the harm they cause.

Having a PS3 for a few months now, I cant really think of any games I want to pirate.
Any future games that are coming out I'd probably buy them because I know the series or deves and they make good games.

The ejecutbable its a normal tself, done with a PS3 SDK, and is charging a PS3 Debug ... You can see in minute 0'44''and noted by the debug options which shows the route of the apps and the option to install new packages ....
An executable made with a PS3 SDK (and signed, I would say illegally, because I doubt that this man has access license and development kit) has no more access to the hypervisor than any normal executable, so YES, you can copy things to a hard disk, but can not play content that comes with flags to be propagated only from physical disk
Or, the whole hack could be making a retail PS3 think it's a Debug PS3. I'm just saying, anything is possible. Don't go saying "It's fake/real" just after a few videos.
