Even a product as innocent as a hair-band is not immune to the quality associated with Chinese products – the unfortunate buyer of this example soon found the band’s rubber component to have been recycled from a condom.

old news here, this is something that the chinese people has been doing for a long time.
Here in southamerica for example, where many chinese products are imported (mostly of the ilegally) thousands of those hair bands where already found to be made with condoms, since 2000.

Personally I think it depends on the girl trying to pull it off. Some look good in ponytails, some pigtails, others neko. Whatever shows the girl as more cute.

But what I do know is that with capitalism, we take resources from other countries (including are own) and get wealthy over such productions.
If a production harms the people who are used to well living standards, the stock holders will bail as soon as people will start suing.
A nice vicious cycle, so not really shocking.
In a capitalist country, when the checks and balances are working corretly, companies have to take responsibility for what they do. If not legally, then fiscally, when people just stop buying their shit.
In a communist country, the government owns everything, so there's no competition, no alternative, and thus no responsibility. Complain, and if you're lucky nothing happens. If you're not, you end up shot for sedition or picking rice in some backwater PCB-ridden paddy somewhere...
This is why some Americans are so pissed at the bailing out and government stewardship of so many of their companies/backs/etc. With no danger of fucking up, the company employees have no reason to act responsibly, since any mistakes will either be bailed out (if the mistake is monetary) or hushed for political reasons (if ethical).
