2ch vs Sankaku Complex: Foreign Otaku “Greedy Thieves”

moe-pirate-by-takashina-masato.png

The fall of OneManga and the exchange of incendiary remarks between Sankaku Complex users and 2ch denizens continues, with the latest thread showing 2ch taking particular umbrage at such reported comments as “TV is free so manga should be free too!”

The latest exchange of fire was provoked by a Japanese news article highlighting the negative reaction of international fans to the closures:

“It’s weird that you have to pay for hamburgers when TV is free. McDonald’s should provide free hamburgers!”

“Writing manga and novels is tough. Just what do the guys saying ‘make it free’ think of the value of other people’s work?”

“Tell it to the publishers in your own country first!”

“Is TV free overseas?”

“In Japan it’s free too. What the hell are you talking about?”

“If TV is supposed to be free then please show me all those American movies and dramas for free too.”

“They’re pretty shameless even for a pack of beggars and thieves. If there are no official releases then get a company to import for you. If you can’t afford it then work.”

“Having to pay is weird. You pay every month for Internet. Make manga, music, anime and western movies free!”

“If you move to the system where ISPs have to pay money to a copyright association…”

“TV is free only because of advertising… think about it.”

“There are some like this in Japan too, but overseas otaku are just totally greedy and avaricious. You can’t make much of a market of their ilk.

They keep going on about making net contents free like it’s some great idea, but you just can’t make back your costs like this.”

“A question – how many millions of users did this site have? Will sales of manga increase without it? Or will they decrease without the publicity?”

“Who can say? They can either take the publicity or stop it for sales – in this case they chose to stop it.”

“A lot of the defenders were using that kind of sophistry to justify themselves. Not so much now though.”

“Without the site they have no way of knowing the manga at all, so it won’t sell in any case.”

“It seems if the anime is broadcast locally the manga sales tend to do well.

It seems that with people reading the manga for free and watching anime illegally, there’s no money in it so broadcasters drop it and as a result it continues not selling.”

“The attendance for events certainly went up, but at the same time sales were actually going down.”

“If they crackdown now their sales will only decrease even further…”

“What about the price difference between the US and Japan? Dragonball costs like $17.99?”

“America has price competition so you can get Dragonball for like $12 on Amazon. In Japan the same volume costs ¥980, so it’s actually about the same.”

“Considering the cost of translation, typesetting and distribution, $17.99 is not unreasonable.”

“Japanese publishers are idiots, aren’t they? Just making it all-you-can-read for $5-$10 a month would have probably worked nicely.”

“Really, Japanese publishers should be joining together to launch a single ‘free’ site to draw in all their fans and make money from that.”

“So TV is free? Then let’s have American comics distributed free as well?”

“TV is free? Where? You can’t watch anime for free anywhere on Japanese TV.”

“If you let our manga out of the country human rights groups overseas will just start complaining. Japan is weak to foreign pressure, so it ends up affecting domestic sales in Japan as well.

Just what merit is there to letting people who refuse to pay money read our manga?”

“They just want mangaka to work for their benefit for free. Try working for free yourselves before lecturing others.”

“Just getting rid of the cheapskates who won’t pay won’t harm the publishers at all.”

“Remember when some foreign pirates illegally downloaded an eroge and then their worthless media was all over it saying it should be banned? [See here & here] Not only do these bastards think they have a right to get everything for free, they also think they have the right to criticise us!”

“Some anime tried free distribution, delayed a week after the Japanese airing. They still complained about it being late and the subs not being good enough, saying fansubs were still better – honestly I don’t think you can work with these people at all.”

“At least buy the manga you worthless beggars.”

“I get the impression they could just release an ‘English version for foreigners resident in Japan’ – they might well get a lot of overseas orders…”

“I’m a copyright holder. Honestly if you’re going to end up with it being watched by foreigners like this, especially creepy Chinese and Koreans, don’t turn it into an anime at all. These guys will never pay for anything, they deserve to be treated like maggots.

The same goes for whites and blacks like this. They should all be sued into oblivion, the Japanese like this too!”

“yooooooooo
YOOOOOOOOOO”

“They need to completely ban all subs in English and Chinese – they’re all just translating the English version into the other languages so getting rid of it will help.”

“What do you expect from the American masses? It seems most of them can barely tell Japan and China apart.”

“Foreigners = pirates.”

yep all major pirating sites should be closed so only private, harder to find groups should be around so that idiots can not download.

Because of imbeciles who can't hide their damn illegal stuff there were some surprise police raids in France and a few other countries and lot's of people were fined heavily even if they just had 1 single mp3 they did not actually buy.

It's like free samples for juice, don't go and drink them all, take one pretend you're actually sampling and then say something like :"Hmm it's really good I think I'll buy one tomorrow" be polite...

i kinda agree with this. if your gonna dl something that's not originally yours, don't make a big deal about it. you should be thankful of having it in the first place.

aww man i already said it on the past manga piracy threads we need a steam like service that is available to the whole world(no US is not the world)

Anime is "free" (in the television) because of all the advertising. Imagine now how much advertising would be needed to a manga be printed and distributed for free.

And I still can't figure why noone has ever started a "steam" like online manga distribution. As the printing and paper price would be zero, mangas could be distrubuted online for a very lower price than usual.

I liked the fact they keep saying about pirates when they themself pirate our american games and sold us HALF MADE GAMES (tales of Tales of Vesperia xbox) Next time we should do the same to them translate half made game in japanese than take the profit and make it to a full game than sell it in US.

They keep telling us about pirating their anime, ON THE SECOND HAND, they KEEP PIRATING OUR MOVIES.

Ever consider the fact that he was complaining about the fact that just because prices are technically cheaper online that doesn't mean there aren't pitfalls, such as not having a credit card to buy the stuff, and also having to pay shipping. Kinda funny how the Americans gets the beat down for it - wouldn't surprise me if the American population of the English internet is 2%. It also tears when going to Japan, and 70% of all whites are Swedish, yet the Japanese always assumes you're American and goes all creepy racist on your ass.

Am I going to go purchase ero figurines and whatever other crap merchandise are there to trap otaku? No. I have some amount of dignity and better things to spend my money (that I work hard for) on. Their problem is that they do not make their anime&manga for worldwide publishing to begin with, so any shitty Cartoon Network content could potentially have more success than the best regional anime ever.

Take Ghibli Studios for example... they make it worldwide and they're doing great...

Most (and by most I mean like 95% of it) of anime is CRUD. So, with most anime, there isn't anything to be destroyed. It sucked to begin with, and executive meddling from 4kids can only make it better (like Samurai Pizza Cats - really crap Z-class anime that was made legendary by dubbers).

Guns were firing all around me as I ran to the closest ditch I could get to before my ass was shot off. The one I managed to get into luckily had one of my comrades, returning the fire to the Republic of 2ch.

"This war fucking sucks," I yelled between explosions.

"You're telling me," my comrade replied.

This war, between the Republic of 2ch and the country of SankakuComplex, has been raging for almost a month, neither side gaining any ground. Both sides were literally at a standstill as nobody could cross No Man's Land without having their limbs blown off from bombs and their bodies turned to swiss cheese from machine gun bullets.

It all started with a simple news article within the country of SankakuComplex, and the comments made by the country's citizens. The Republic of 2ch, having heard of the commotion from their spies, became furious and launched a full scale attack. SankakuComplex wasn't ready for such a large scale conflict and lost one of its biggest cities in the initial attack. They sent out messengers to try and get as much help from the world power, 4Chan, but help has yet to arrive.

"I don't really see why 2ch would attack such a small country. What purpose does it have?"

"Just to flex it's muscles to the rest of the world?" my comrade guessed.

"That's fine and dandy, but we're literally a middle of nowhere country with limited resources and nothing worth taking. You would think they would attack a bigger entity."

"But that would just bring nuclear fallout."

    "How so?" I asked.

"Think about it. 4chan and 2ch have over a thousand nukes. If either one of them were to piss off the other, the entire world would suffer from their conflict. However, if they were to attack a country that the other didn't give a shit about, then they have nothing to worry about. Kind of like how 4Chan attacked Australia and 2ch turned a blind eye. It's the same situation here. I really doubt any help from 4chan would come any time soon unless an idiot from 2ch would attack one of their strongholds."

    "God help us."

A third soldier had jumped into the trench, having run out of ammo.

"Do you guys have any ammo to spare?" the soldier asked.

"Sorry bud, but we got enough for ourselves here. Why not move back and get some from the back lines?"

"Fuck that! I'm not turning my back to those bastards. I want my free manga and anime."

"You see," I said to my comrade, "this is why we get into dumbass wars like these."

"What are you talking about?" the third soldier asked.

"It's because of that mentality 2ch hates us. We steal anime and manga by the carrier load, and you wonder why their pissed off?"

"Well," the soldier stuttered, "they steal our films and music as well, so it's even."

"No it's not! Yes, piracy will exist regardless of how this war ends, but the problem is that a lot of them do buy or films and music. Meanwhile, it's the opposite on our lines. There is manga and anime to buy here, but the majority would rather not and just get it for free on the internet."

"But the stuff I want isn't going to get licensed."

"How the hell do you know that? If there's enough interest, a company will try and license it."

"But they won't because previous attempts at licensing those kinds of series has failed in our markets."

"Because nobody fucking BOUGHT the damn things! Hell, did you even buy the similar manga/anime that was available?"

    "No."

"And that's where the problem starts. If you really want a certain style or genre to come to our markets, buy the ones that manage to do first and the companies will be more willing to license the others."

"But I don't have any money."

"Then just become an assassin. They get shit tons of money for little work, maybe 5 minutes of real work, and as long as people are alive there is always a job market. A recession will never get rid of the assassin market."

"That sounds like a good idea," the soldier said as he scratched the tip of his neckbeard.

"Then go out there and start assassinating people." I pushed the soldier back out onto the field. He began to scream as he ran towards 2ch's front lines. In seconds, his screaming ceased.

"You know he didn't have ammo," my comrade pointed out.

    "I know. Ain't I a stinker sometimes?"

As the two of us began to laugh, a stray grenade landed between the two of us.

    ""OF FUCK!!""

My comrade pushed me out of the way and jumped onto the grenade. His body was torn apart in the split of a second. Bits and pieces of flesh landed on my helmet and uniform, as if raining down from the sky.

Sadly that's not completely true, it is true that they do not directly distribute outside of Japan, therefore in theory they won't lose any protential sales.

Our only legit way of obtaining said translated material is via foreign publishers to BUY the rights to the licences and make the translations. Hang on a moment what publisher is going to obtain rights to a series when it has been read by everyone and their pet monkey via sub/translation groups?

Furthermore IMO here, Publishers will have to increase the price to cover the lower than expected volumes of sales, this is where the vicious circle begins. As we go online to find the cheaper option (Free), foreign publishers stop obtaining lisences, original publishers lose royalties/lisceners and mangaka's lose out too. Thus we have the angry 2ch,

One Manga made a killing on advertising, so they were distributing basically for profit. One Manga ownership was no saint, they knew hat they were doing. Japanese are outraged because they are dumb enough to keep paying ridiculous amounts for manga and anime when people are getting it for free or so it seems from their comments. If publishers did make a steam like service for manga they would rake in dough, but they're too afraid of technogoblins to do so.

That's true but sharing something like an Anime or Manga online to the International Community is quite hard, especially those with any characters that look underage or that have explicit scenes (either sex or violence).

This would be because of the various moral fanatic groups in the countries around the world, especially those who are economic powers.

To legally share something internationally, you would need licenses for that product from those very same countries (and a few others if you plan to distribute there)

If those same moral fanatic groups get word, they will make some story up about how all anime and manga is bad, simply by choosing the one scene in a whole series that is almost guaranteed to incite public anger, and selling their story to the media.

In that case, the government who approved of the anime or manga previously, would be pressured into taking down that anime or manga, causing collateral damage that may bring down the business that was releasing those products online, and also prevent future anime and manga being sold in that country, or they would be heavily censored.

TL;DR: Sharing anime and manga online isn't as easy to do as you think and various moral fanatics or religious groups would be against it making it hard to import it into a country with those groups.

You know what? It's kinda refreshing to see people across the world, pirates of all sizes and nationalities just try to spin their way out of the moral conundrum of internet piracy. It's pretty cute actually.

And yes, if you ask me if I 'stole' or 'pirated' anything, my answer would be a resounding 'YES'. That considering, I try to buy the goods in physical/digital official forms if I have access to them that's not prohibitively expensive.

I also agree with that, I'd pay for a steam like service that gave out quality subbed manga and anime as quickly as possible without the quality of the subs being diminished.

But really their complaints about pirating manga is inaccurate. It doesn't matter if I'm getting it for free when the product isn't being offered to me in the first place. Someone bought 1 copy and they got the money for the original copy of the manga, then someone spent their own time to translate it and give it to english speakers. The publisher is not losing sales since 90% of people reading fan subs would have never seen or heard of that manga in the first place. Of course you can argue someone should learn to read japanese then order them online from overseas but that's just not economical, and their is no advertising directed towards foreigners for most manga in the first place. It's a totally untapped market and nobody is gaining or losing money from the pirate fan subbed manga that you can't purchase legally outside of japan.

Yeah, but the other sites' 'free' comes with their own hassles, namely them all not being in high def, being laden with ads, etc.

Crunchyroll releases are actually decently fast nowadays. Barring their 1 week exclusivity deal of course..

    Comment by Anonymous
    18:00 12/08/2010 # ! Neutral (0)

well technically they have subbed versions the day after the japanese airing date for their premium subscribers on crunchyroll, the price is like $5 a month for high def streaming subbed the day after the japanese air date, not a bad deal once you think about it, if you want free, you will have to wait a week for the standard def subs with ads. crunchyroll is one of the nice examples of how the american anime industry is smartening up, though in my opinion, its too little too late, if they want to keep anime alive, they had better start releasing everything left and right to catch up...
and another thing, most of the people who pirate arent going to go out and spend money on the product if they couldn't pirate it anyways... so piracy really doesnt affect sales in my opinion to the point where its a problem.
plus i understand mangaka and others working in the anime industry deserve money for their works, but as far as i know, the publishers take almost all of the profits from a series and give the mangaka and other hard working men and women almost nothing. i would rather directly give my money to the mangaka and the like then hand it to the publishers and hope for a "trickle down effect" that way we could make it cheaper to get the finished product so people wont bitch about piracy and crap.
and i would have to comment about one-manga as well, without sites like onemanga, there would be many series that would not have been brought overseas from Japan. just take a look at naruto as an example, its an extremely popular series in the west, and im sure that almost all of its popularity was due to the fact it was spread on the internet for free in english, even before the anime was brought overseas it had a huge following. so the manga and anime publishers dont seem to understand how much "free"/very cheap distribution can benefit them.

Crunchyroll was actually considering getting manga to the site as well. But there was a lot of legal stuff that had to be worked out before it would happen.

On a side note, I ordered a CD a month back or so, yet to get it. So I downloaded the songs because I got tired of waiting.

Though I wouldn't say Crunchyroll releases in HD either, it seems like scaled up SD.

Even if the source was originally HD, the stream format will kill the HD quality of it anyways and I like my anime in HD.

I'd rather be able to download a HD MKV file and archive it before watching it, than watching a streamed version any day.

Well i wouldnt know, i havent actually tried their paid service. the thing is, crunchyroll has vastly improved over the last year or so, thanks to a multi-million dollar investment that was made in them. I think its a decent deal for now, but they really need to pick up more series for me to fully consider subscribing to a paid service...
yes, i would prefer to be able to download a HD 720 or 1080 version of the anime and keep in on my computer, but the thing is, if they allowed that, then they would have to jack up the prices... since that would probably use up a heck of a lot more bandwidth, and theres the fact that its allot harder to control who has the file after you allow it for download.
the reason why people should try to support legit sources when possible is the fact that there are some major issues in being able to be sustainable on the internet, at this point, allot of companies are in the red and will most likely drop out of the business, which means less anime available overall since less money is going to japan to make anime. I respect some companies that are making a real effort to keep anime alive like crunchyroll and funimation and the like, the least we can do to keep what we love alive is support them when possible, which i understand for most of us, is only on occasion with the prices of anime and manga right now.
I think the best way to keep anime alive and improve sales and profitability for anime and manga is to change how publishers work. they are the real problem in my opinion, they may help distribute the material, but in the age of the internet, they are much less useful, there isnt nearly as much work to do to distribute things if its on the internet, so i think they really need to stop taking so much of the profit made from their sales, let the creators of the anime and manga get a good chunk of the money, and lower prices in general so that more people are willing to pay for the legit thing. they need to learn that physical media is not nearly as wanted these days, the same way that newspapers are dying, no one needs the physical thing anymore, since they can get all that they want from it in digital form with little effort and cheaper. with that extra money saved from digital distribution, they can streamline physical product distribution too for the people that want to have the physical thing, less glitzy crap means more affordable. they got most of their manga in Japan printed on newspaper quality paper books and they are smaller than the US versions, I look at the US releases and they are printed on good quality thick pure white paper with thick expensive looking glossy covers compared to their japanese counterparts, then i look at the price, and feel like vomiting. $11 in the US vs ¥500 in JPN :(
in general, the anime and manga industry needs to adapt to the consumers, or die. offer free stuff(so you can get some ad revenue to at least break even, while boosting popularity) then offer premium services for a low price that can be considered a good deal. then change how each person in the process is paid, since mangaka/animators usually arent making enough to justify how hard they work.
but thats just my very large two cents about this issue. hope you enjoyed reading that food for thought.

The international distribution system is not a quarter as good as it could be. Why do you have to pay about 10 oder 20 bucks for a single movie/anime or comic/manga if it's only a digital copy. Lower the prices drastically, make the products worldwide available with a steam like service where you can enjoy others people work, pay money for it and be happy. the data on it
    shipping fees

What I do most of the time is buying a physical copy online since i collect some of the series. I rip them, then get a digital download of soft-subs.

Then I'll do typesetting with the softsubs, merge the ripped video with the subs (MKV) and share it with my friends.

Then they start spending money on merchandise related to the awesome series I shared with them.

I'm personally not stopping my so called illegal download because they are my previews but there are at least 4 series I'm crazy to put my hands on the original but some are not translated to English and the prices are usually prohibitive. Unfortunately not every country in the world has the big earnings you find in the US or in Japan.

It makes me sad to see the Japanese saying such things about the rest of the world when there are ppl like me that has a high affection for them and their culture. The good part is that we know they are not the majority and there are the Japanese that are pretty nice towards foreigners =)

As for translating things into Engrish, it's pretty much the best and easiest way for things to get licensed. I mean without fansubs or scanalators we wouldn't be able to have the anime/manga shown world wide. Or they annoyed that your shows are being broadcasted or legaly sold in other countries?
