An infographic for parents who know nothing about games has recently been causing waves with its assertions that games “turn children into impulsive murderers” and “make them into illiterates.”
Certainly an unusual way of promoting travel insurance.
Instead of blaming the companies, face facts and blame the damn parents for not spending enough time with their kids and leaving them with a console game.
The unfortunate thing is much of this stuff is actually true, but it's because games are fun, and reading is shoved down their throats. If Harry Potter were on schools' reading lists, you'd have a lot more reading. To Kill a Mocking Bird is NOT INTERESTING TO MIDDLE SCHOOLERS!
Parenting is the key, but whatever, it's all moot anyway. No parent in this country considers their child as anything more than an object they own anyway these days.
More games like Deus Ex should exist. Then you'll actually get people considering the plot twists and the historical aspects at least.
To Kill a Mockinbird is not interesting to ANYONE, let alone Middle schoolers. I propose the addition of more Fantasy and Science Fiction books to school reading lists.
This statistic chart is so fake. I have tons of gamer friends (thats all my friends really are) and most of us read a lot more than normal people, we are not violent at all, and we all graduated High School with great grades and most of us are now in College. To top it all off, we all live in California so these statistics dont even apply to the place theyre supposed to represent, let alone the whole US.
To Kill a Mockingbird is one of my all time favorite books.
I agree with Alexeon about the chart, though. My buddies and I are all gamers, and we own and read more books than anyone else.
I say they need to make a chart on people that party every weekend (and on most weekdays also). Very few of those sorts read (or they only decide to 'read' what Oprah announces ).
First, its the parents fault for buying their kid a game without checking up on it first, STOP trying to blame anything/everyone else.
Second, I'm a gamer, and so far, I don't feel the need to kill anyone. Plus, I'd say I'm pretty smart, always get A's and B's in school without really trying. I also read a lot, and I too liked "How to Kill a Mockingbird", but heck, you NEED to read a lot to be on the internet.
This all leads back to the fact that parents/the government just don't can't loosen up their pride, or maybe even aren't smart enough to realize its their fault in the first place. =/

The sad thing about this is that there's nothing about eye strain, bad posture and carpal tunnel which are actual physical risks associated with gaming that we need to be aware of and not made-up bull shit.
To my fellow gamers: do some pull pups with a towel around the bar to help build your hand muscles and decompress/straighten your spine, try gaming while standing, kneeling or lunging instead of sitting now and then, and whenever possible, pause, divert your eyes to somewhere else, and have good lighting.
the part with the lack of reading at least holds a little weight with me, because to be quite honest - most libraries I went to as a kid were deserted.
now all you see people doing are cramming for exams and fucking in the private study rooms once you hit uni.
Video games actually indirectly TAUGHT me to read. When I was 4 I could read excellently, you know why? Because when I was 3, I wanted to play Brave Fencer Musashi, but my then current reading skills weren't strong enough for me to understand alot of the words, and I didn't know what to do. So I asked my mom to help me, it enhanced my vocabulary and reading comprehension. So fuck everyone who says video games make you illiterate.
I learned my english from playing Monkey Island and many other games. While my class was learning to say "the cat is under the chair" i already was at "You fight like a cow" level :D
But now serously, i never studied on english classes or for exams, cus i already knew most of that stuff from video games. Maybe my teachers were stupid and sucked at teaching too.
I think that what seems to have become the greatest issue for me, is that I'm more fluent in english than my first language, causing some problematic situations.
I'm pretty sure there are scientific reports saying the opposite of most of their claims.
Not only the content of that poster is ridiculous, it is outright infuriating in how it is designed, trying to deceive the average, quickly-over-it-scimming reader.
For example, they write "9 out of 10 children" very big and hide the fact that adolescents are also calculated into that number.
of where they write "49% 18-49" first, giving the reader the impression that that percantage is actually about minors.
Lol. "Passive" activities like reading a book or listening to music eh? What if the music about killing babies? What if the book is about gruesomely decapitating someone? Failure I say.
BULLSHIT
First Jack Thompson and this crap. In my opinion, boredom is the biggest enemy. Why'd you try putting tinfoil in the microwave? Because I was bored and wanted something exciting. Why are you playing rated M games at your friend's house? Because it looked fun and I had nothing to do at home. Besides, chances are rated M games won't affect you as much as watching the local news.
How I can tell this is complete and utter shit designed to bash video games: I play RPG's almost exclusively. I spend probably 300% more time than anyone I know reading, because so much of what I play is text. If I took the time to do a full completion of Dragon Age that included reading journal entries and all of the extras/notes etc. It would probably take me about 100 hours to read EVERYTHING that I come across, and maybe 30 hours of it would be "Playing" the game.
You know after a horrible day I'd like to vent all my rage onto innocent video game characters..Ohoop I don't have that anymore aight I'll vent on innocent living people then :-/
Not news to me. Any overstimulating of entertainment or food or activity is harmful for a child. They single out games here, but everything in life is about safe moderation..
I just wish they let parents do their damn jobs instead of trying to pass flippant laws for it. Why not tackle more serious issues like fixing their extreme lack of budget in California?
It's the pushing of laws like these which are used to take peoples attentions away from the more serious issues. And like throwing something shiny in front of someone with a short attention span, it usually works.
Well the law they're pushing is to not allow a minor to buy a violent game... so they could just ask a grown-up/parent to buy it for them, very simple really...
i think it should be 13 and up, not 18 and up. at 13 i pretty much had a very good understanding about the differnece between fiction and reality. seems like old people forget about their youth too quickly.
I guess it's just in case. You never know, those 13 year olds might just bust out their 300 some dollars for a console and 60 some dollars for their violent games. It's just to make sure they don't do that. :p
Good point. The fact is that most parents are MORE than willing to allow their child to play God of War or something similar to that, because they have raised their children with the idea that some things are okay in fantasy but not in reality.
Need I remind that most people who go 'Columbine' on us are RAISED IN CONSERVATIVE FAMILIES!
No mention of how Kinect/Move players go "Dickbaton!"?
soniamdisappoint.jpg
this is sooooo true omg when I was little and when I played mario I tried to kill my friend by jumping on their head.
games are Eeeeevil
Rubbish
Them goverments need to stop with the 'We know more than thou' activity.
An excellent example of how moralfags need to distort reality to prove that they have rights to reduce other people's freedom.
Kahliforniah~ as the Governator would pronounce.
Instead of blaming the companies, face facts and blame the damn parents for not spending enough time with their kids and leaving them with a console game.
Just don't buy them games sheesh.
Want to know what will really make gamers hostile?
Taking away our violent video games
Or censoring them. That works too.

But but, Harry Potter is EEEvil, you know. Witches and wizards, you know. EEEvil witches and wizards...
It just came to my mind that, isn't it what they (American Game Publishers) try to sell? Like changing bishonens to Super Macho guys?
Well, I don't really they're the type of characters that would appear in innocent games...
So much contradiction...

Destroy Californication!

damn if it ain't games it's something else...

fuck yea, when i was 2 i was playing tetris, i wanted nintendo power at 3, and i was reading at a 8th grade level at 4.
granted my spelling and grammar suck balls, but reading comprehension, i had teacher who weren't as good as me and openly admitted it.
I've learnt english by playing PSX games (and a dictionary), mainly from Squaresoft/Square Enix.
No joking. Now I can hear half an hour of spoken English without much trouble (except slang).
I have learned a whole new language at an early age mostly by and for playing games.
I learned to read at 3 because games had text and parents weren't always around to read it for me.
True stories everyone. I learned whole new languages playing games.
I NEVER went to an english/spanish/japanese/italian/french class and I know quite a lot.
It was FF1 and MOO2 in my case, video games were actually the largest motivator for literacy in my early years.
I think that what seems to have become the greatest issue for me, is that I'm more fluent in english than my first language, causing some problematic situations.
I'm pretty sure there are scientific reports saying the opposite of most of their claims.
I have learned more history from games than I ever did from "school".
Im a chinese and I finished FF7 by myself when I was 8 and my parents weren't literate enough to help me. Nuff said

So yeah, how should I put it... FAIL!
I believe they will say "DON'T PLAY MARIO BECAUSE IT ENCOURAGES YOU TO BE DRUG ADDICTS, DEM MUSHROOMS" in the near future. <__<
No no no. It obviously encourages you to be gay. You know, what with jumping on and eating any "mushrooms" that come in sight.
..those are the Goompas. xDD
*Goombas...
Also, you'd think the plumbing trade would've really picked up years ago...
1. Take Super Mario Galaxy Box.
2. Read the title letters that have a shining corner.
3. UR MR GAY
4. Proof?
Lol. "Passive" activities like reading a book or listening to music eh? What if the music about killing babies? What if the book is about gruesomely decapitating someone? Failure I say.
Wonder where they got the myth...if kid stop playing video games, they will spend it on reading and study! ..HA as if

Only idiots shows those symptoms..
Intellectual gamers rarely show any of those shits they say..

SO MUCH FUCKING TEXT.
Don't do et! You'll explode Mormon mommy's brain!
99% off all politicians are dumb fucks.
And the 1% would be?
the dead ones. since the other 99% are still alive and feeding off your tax $
implying that making insane amounts of money from deceiving people is the action of a stupid person seems rather naive.
stupid = asshole
You know after a horrible day I'd like to vent all my rage onto innocent video game characters..Ohoop I don't have that anymore aight I'll vent on innocent living people then :-/
lol, silly statistics. they mean nothing.
Silly statistics, Trix are for lolis!

They better try to ban gun in America instead of pull out that kind of troll. Only idiots take it seriously .
