Portal, Korean Style

Eyebrows have been raised at the rather shameless filching of the dimensional portal gameplay Valve’s Portal is known for by a Korean multiplayer FPS, with the equally original title “GATE.”

The game, by JC Entertainment, is currently in closed beta testing in Korea. Whether there are any plans for an international release is not clear.

It seems also to bear more than a passing resemblance to TF2…

Portal gameplay for those unfamiliar with it:

Whilst someone stealing the portal gameplay was perhaps inevitably going to happen, duplicating the exact same portal effect and gameplay dynamic seems to be taking things a little too far.

The Korean version looks a little RPGish, but valves portal is too awesome to rip off.

Its a good way to prepare for the REAL Portal FPS, that is combined with the best of two worlds, Team Fortress and Portal gun. Valve, I love you so much, because unlike most game companies, you actually care about your customers, as well as admitting and apologizing to your customers when you are wrong...not to mention compensating them for their troubles.

Well face it, Prey (2006) was before Portal (2007). Portal was just the first to make it right.

Narbacular Drop (i.e. Portal 0) was before Prey.

and by the time narbacular drop was finisihed, Prey had been in development for almost 10 years since 1995.

Still, it's kinda hard to still ideas from something that doesn't exist, so I think it's safe to say that Narbacular Drop had nothing (or almost nothing) to do with Prey.

And it was first to do that portal thing AND first to do it right. So, yeah, Prey has no serious spot in history of, emmm, "portal-making".

Prey had an enough potential with its portal boxes, gravity shift roads and size distortions, however past its intro play it failed to explore more of it, making portals only an alternative way of having doors to lead you through your generic, linear alien shooter.

Portal, on the other hand, wasn't afraid to make portals the key part of solving the game and dealing with obstacles/enemies in non-traditional ways.

Things usually evolve from something that already exist.

Still, it'd be awesome if they could make you go through portals to a completely different scenario without displaying the infamous LOADING screen. Dimensional gates <3

Yeah, I don't quite understand this.

Portals aren't new at all. Using portals and puzzles isn't ripping of Portal at all. It's as much as ripping off Super Mario Brothers by making a 2D platform scroller where you can jump and walk to the right and left.

A difference I noticed between these, besides the color spectrum, is that they can apparently make portals on anything when Portal's limitation was unmoving flat surfaces, which makes sense considering if you want a flat portal that isn't raping reality, you need a flat surface. The one on the truck is appalling; it makes me wonder what would happen if you went through the back side of the portal that's hanging off.

Well, I wouldn't mind a MMO having a portal stuff. After all, Portal is so genius, why not alter it.

But then again, maybe this is a matter about honor and stuff. I don't know.

I'm not really seeing any other way to make a portal look any different from Valve's, for simplicity's sake - they've always appeared, and functioned the same way as they always have.. Nice round hole large enough to step into. But Valve is by far not the most original company to have stepped onto this earth if you're gonna nitpick over something like this.
I think I remember learning of a portal on my birthday, maybe I should rag on Valve.

At least this is international. Like we need another incestuous breeding ground of retard gaming redundancy running amok like in JP

What makes me lol the most about this is that Korea complains HEAVILY about Highschool of the Dead using the likeness of one of their actors as a zombie, but they have no problem whatsoever stealing chunks of entire games and calling it their own idea.

Valve doesn't have a monopoly on "Portals". People have been opening holes in walls and floors for decades either through magic or technology.

We can compare the games and gameplay all we want(TF2-ish cell-shade), but all that really matters is how good the game is.

They better have the inclusion of a Companion Cube and Cake, otherwise, this game is going to have little to no player base.

Although this is a good way to prepare for the REAL multiplayer FPS portal goodness. Just a little longer, Team Portress...

Team Portress is a Portal gun mod into the Team Fortress 2 game developed by a community of players. However, it is been seen (in the test videos provided) to actually be balanced out and not too out of place in the gameplay.

Darksiders has a portal gun in it and the dungeon you use it in is quite fun and challenging at times. And I hope it returns in its sequel.

Portals are a new refreshing mechanic. Noone is throwing turds at everyone stealing the 'blue key to open blue door' or 'hit switch to open door' mechanic; whoever did that right?

What's with the South Korean hate? I mean, if you're going to go that way, Japan's economy is in a major sink hole. Japan probably may never be able to get out of its current deflation in its currency. With this deflationary spiral, it could send Japan to situations the world has never seen yet, because there is no data on what happens in a deflationary spiral. Also, there is no data on how to get out of a deflationary spiral.
You say Korea should get invaded by the North Koreans, I say Japan is worse off. I'd rather somehow survive an invasion, which will stimulate the already booming economy in South Korea by creating more jobs by killing some koreans off, than be stuck in a deflation that the world has never seen before. And because of this deflation, people can't get married due to the standards women have on their men.
Rather have some people die in a war and get laid than never getting laid.
