Eyebrows have been raised at the rather shameless filching of the dimensional portal gameplay Valve’s Portal is known for by a Korean multiplayer FPS, with the equally original title “GATE.”
The game, by JC Entertainment, is currently in closed beta testing in Korea. Whether there are any plans for an international release is not clear.
It seems also to bear more than a passing resemblance to TF2…
Portal gameplay for those unfamiliar with it:
Whilst someone stealing the portal gameplay was perhaps inevitably going to happen, duplicating the exact same portal effect and gameplay dynamic seems to be taking things a little too far.

I can't see the stealing in that, they obviously use it diffierently as it is an FPS while Portal is a Puzzle, it is not like Valve can claim the right to that kind of stuff, that would be like the first ever shooter claiming the ability to shoot damaging bullets.
It would be cool to spawn portals like that in real life.
Imagine the possibilities: girls, money etc.
Gate... they see me rippin'... they hatin'...
Koreans, they copy everything.
I wouldn't mind shooting people through portals.
Oh wow, videogames copying each other, breaking news. Only retarded manchildren get infuriated by samey gameplay mechanics. What matters it's if the game is good and enjoyable, not who did it first.
Darksiders already did it.
Looks like Koreans mix Team Fortress 2 with Portal and had a Baby and called it "Gate" which is a rip-off.
i kinda prefer this version than the real one. it looks like a combination of team fortress 2 and protal not to mention it's cell shaded.
Definitely looks similar, but I wouldn't call making a hole in space copying. There aren't really that many ways to do it. Besides, depending on the release dates (which I don't remember) we could say portal was copying Prey (or vise versa), which also had a similar simple portal.
Also: mimicry is the lifeblood of not only the games industry, but art itself. If not for mimicry, nothing we have now would exist. Theres nothing wrong with taking a game design and trying see how it would work when taken in a different direction. Thats kind of how these things work.
Didn't they also copy TF2? What's with Koreans and Valve?
and so korea decided they wanted in on the simmonsing
please dont use simmonsing since simmons nick don't start that but slam dunk mangaka is the first plagiarist mangaka. just told you.
I'm ok with Portal being ripped off because I think its hard to copyright the idea of using 4th dimensions into a game.
I've long had the "portal" like gameplay/concept in my head as an idea long before the time of Playstation 2's and Xbox's.
And I'm not the only person I believe to imagine/ try to comprehend it.
The only thing portal did as a game I couldn't/didn't think about was making the portal thing into a gun, giving it a storyline, and the idea of cake at the end.
Infact, I might even say that the Portal Gun is an evolved rippoff of the Translocator in Unreal Tournament 2004.
True. I'd also have to say that this 'Portal' concept is something that you should not have been able to patent. The design of the Portal Gun itself maybe... not the concept of using portals to move around a room!
That's the first time I've seen something like in the demo video, I thought the platforming aspects looked incredible!
It is a portal but doesn't appear to function the same way. Rather than setting town 2 portals connected to each other it lets you pass threw any object.
hurry someone please make korean actors zombie mod for left 4 dead!
But ENJOY KOREAN ZOMBIE!!!! Refer to Highschool of the Dead!
hurry someone make that korean zombie as a mod for left 4 dead!
At least in this game are outdoor and fighting thats not fighting knock-out tripods. BUT THEY DIDNT HAVE VALVE NAME HOW DARE IT!
In other news, every FPS is a ripoff of Wolfenstein 3D, every RTS its a ripoff of Dune 2, etc.
Its a game with popular elements, its no surprise that more will be made like it.
Final Fantasy is a ripoff of dragon quest.
They were made by the same company idiot.
Yeah right, look at the NES era.
it was not you assfucker. Enix and Square used to be a separate company.
Am I the only one that noticed the Double Bubble homage?
I didn't know they sell those in Korea too...
yea it's ripping of but adding the portal gun to TF@ is just WIN on so many levels
you can fap on gmod to has that fantasy.
looks interesting
i hope JC staff has nothing to do with this
My post never appeared. T_T Funny.
Copying, yes, but not as if Portal didn't copy a few things themselves. (The comments of http://kotaku.com/5604003/south-korean-game-rips-off-portal reflect how I feel about this).
The GATE is a lie.
And I think I just lost due to orange text.
They better have the inclusion of a Companion Cube and Cake, otherwise, this game is going to have little to no player base.
Although this is a good way to prepare for the REAL multiplayer FPS portal goodness. Just a little longer, Team Portress...
The Korean version looks a little RPGish, but valves portal is too awesome to rip off.
Valve doesn't have a monopoly on "Portals". People have been opening holes in walls and floors for decades either through magic or technology.
We can compare the games and gameplay all we want(TF2-ish cell-shade), but all that really matters is how good the game is.
mmmmm should we go "FOREIGN FILTH ARE STEALING OUR GAMES!!!!" ?
What makes me lol the most about this is that Korea complains HEAVILY about Highschool of the Dead using the likeness of one of their actors as a zombie, but they have no problem whatsoever stealing chunks of entire games and calling it their own idea.
moron, those are completely different things. They call HotD racist not plagiarist, the guy is a person not a concept or an idea.
Well, I wouldn't mind a MMO having a portal stuff. After all, Portal is so genius, why not alter it.
But then again, maybe this is a matter about honor and stuff. I don't know.
>TNinja
>Well, I wouldn't mind a MMO having a portal stuff.
I think you should hang your head in shame...
I'm not really seeing any other way to make a portal look any different from Valve's, for simplicity's sake - they've always appeared, and functioned the same way as they always have.. Nice round hole large enough to step into. But Valve is by far not the most original company to have stepped onto this earth if you're gonna nitpick over something like this.
I think I remember learning of a portal on my birthday, maybe I should rag on Valve.
At least this is international. Like we need another incestuous breeding ground of retard gaming redundancy running amok like in JP
A portal MMO would be pretty unique, despite the portal part being a ripoff.
Portal spam...err, no thank you.
Well face it, Prey (2006) was before Portal (2007). Portal was just the first to make it right.
Yeah, I don't quite understand this.
Portals aren't new at all. Using portals and puzzles isn't ripping of Portal at all. It's as much as ripping off Super Mario Brothers by making a 2D platform scroller where you can jump and walk to the right and left.
A difference I noticed between these, besides the color spectrum, is that they can apparently make portals on anything when Portal's limitation was unmoving flat surfaces, which makes sense considering if you want a flat portal that isn't raping reality, you need a flat surface. The one on the truck is appalling; it makes me wonder what would happen if you went through the back side of the portal that's hanging off.
ah yes...prey....that game was awesome
Narbacular Drop (i.e. Portal 0) was before Prey.
Things usually evolve from something that already exist.
Still, it'd be awesome if they could make you go through portals to a completely different scenario without displaying the infamous LOADING screen. Dimensional gates <3
and by the time narbacular drop was finisihed, Prey had been in development for almost 10 years since 1995.
Prey had an enough potential with its portal boxes, gravity shift roads and size distortions, however past its intro play it failed to explore more of it, making portals only an alternative way of having doors to lead you through your generic, linear alien shooter.
Portal, on the other hand, wasn't afraid to make portals the key part of solving the game and dealing with obstacles/enemies in non-traditional ways.
Still, it's kinda hard to still ideas from something that doesn't exist, so I think it's safe to say that Narbacular Drop had nothing (or almost nothing) to do with Prey.
And it was first to do that portal thing AND first to do it right. So, yeah, Prey has no serious spot in history of, emmm, "portal-making".
Its a good way to prepare for the REAL Portal FPS, that is combined with the best of two worlds, Team Fortress and Portal gun. Valve, I love you so much, because unlike most game companies, you actually care about your customers, as well as admitting and apologizing to your customers when you are wrong...not to mention compensating them for their troubles.
Someone already combined Team Fortress 2 and Portal.

The fake is a lie!
Why did he get downgraded he was saying this game is a fake it's a lie, the original portal will always be the best. Can't wait for 2.
But Valve havent done an multiplayer deathmatch in Portal. So what's wrong with that GATE?
And before you know it, China comes out with "DOOR"
