Aya Hirano‘s new career as TV talent has seen her legendary “AYA STYLE” resurrected – much to her evident embarrassment.
The main picture in question in case anyone has somehow forgotten it:
For those not familiar with the incident, she was involved in a gravure photoshoot on a tropical beach, published as “AYA STYLE,” in which she managed to appear wearing her bikini upside down.
At the time many of her more ardent fans insisted she was wearing it correctly, but by her own later admission and her appearance on this show, this clearly was not the case.
Her reaction:
Player 1
“Is your IQ low?”
“Hirano-san is a bit of an idiot.”
It seems she will be forever dogged by this incident – even her reinvention as TV talent has failed to escape it.
In a later (and unrelated) exchange she came close to tears:

"Hirano san ga chyotto baka"
They even prepared that text beforehand. Evil media >:)
Actually it's chotto baka. It just means a little bit dumb. Evil indeed lol.
If you chat with real japanese people using romaji, they say "chyotto" instead of "chotto", and a lot of other spellings which we aren't used to. I had a hard time understanding this initially, then I got used to it.
It seemed to me that the japanese have a different way of seeing romaji as we nihongo learners see it.
After all, "cho" is made up of "chi" and yo".
Well, I would've corrected Darkrock too if I hadn't known this fact. But he isn't wrong
^ although Japanese people use it it's still a common mistake. Yes it can be pronounced correctly this way, but under the most commonly used romanization it is written wrong. If it was written on a language test it would be marked wrong.
If it appears in romanization system I have never heard of, or is some kind of rare exception to these rules, I apologize.
I guess next time I shouldn't post anything even If I'm just trying to be helpful.
It is the Romanisation system the Japanese themselves actually invented and use. As you might expect, it is completely useless for anyone else as it sacrifices the ability to be read effectively by untrained non-Japanese for 1-to-1 transliteration. There's no difference in intended pronunciation or otherwise.
So even if you write chiyouttou it would still be correct?
not really,Chottouちょうっとう and Chiyouttouちようっとう is a bit different
ちょうっとう - is that even a word?
Isn't is supposed to be ちょっと?
Not trying to be a smart-ass or anything. I really just want to know if there is some kind of misunderstanding on my part.
ちょうっとう...超...糖? 超っ糖? Lol, that's some pretty awesome sugar.
If you are really good in japanese, why not help us do some fansub and translation?
No offense but I have no idea why would someone want to correct something so small like ちょっと.
If you are really good Japanese, why don't you help use some fansubs and translation instead?
No offense, but I really don't understand why would someone correct something so small like ちょっと.
^^^^ hahaha fail! comment delays suck huh.
@Anon 3:08;
No official test is actually ever in romaji. Romaji sucks. Not to mention there are indeed several different romaji systems.
But who cares? Why did this conversation even crop up? Don't correct Darkrockslizer; it was one fucking letter! /smack
Yes there are several different systems of romanization that have come and gone over the years. I have an old J-E dictionary from the turn of the last century that spells things very strangely.
The Japanese are notoriously poor with their English, due in no small part to outdated textbooks and teaching methods. Perhaps this is why many write "chyotto" instead of "chotto" to this day. Another common one is "Inouye" as opposed to "Inoue."
>Romaji sucks.
Maybe so, but not half as bad as our own writing system. When I think back on all those wasted hours...
"Romaji" is called so because it uses the Latin alphabet, which dozens of other languages also use, all of which with their own pronunciations and phonetic conventions.
Wikipedia even says the first Romaji systems were based on the orthography of the Portuguese language. In fact, reading Romaji with my own language's phonetic conventions i automatically produce the correct Japanese pronunciation.
As expected there's still plenty of people believing everyone else in the world is trying to uniform to the english language, helplessly failing in the process...
I'd like to add that curiously I get an -almost- correct translation of pronouncing them the German way, too, if you only keep like four or five little rules in mind.
Learning romanization with Aya Hirano. O wait..
Also, her work as Haruhi (regardless of that endless eight nightmare) was good but Konata was AWESOME. Anything else he does besides being a seiyuu is irrelevant after that.
Er... SHE does. It's a she right?
Well, it's the media. They are all evil.
I actually think there are some executives trying to deter her into going back to pure seiyuu work in a very underhanded manner.
If she complains, she'll just get kicked out. If she quits, they'll win. If she stays there and suffers humilliations, they still have their fun at her expense.
It's an easy win for them and a very bad scenario for Hirano.
@ Anonymous: Why does it matter how you romanize it?
You used the more common Romanization, and darkrock used a more rare form. I had a friend in Japan who wrote his name "Shotaro" as "Syotaro"
And @ Darkrock: Why would you think that they prepared it beforehand? It doesn't appear to be live. They tape the interview then add subtitles and captions later. It's SO common on Japanese TV.
Even if he romanized it with the rare form it would still be cyotto. I didn't say it mattered you apparently thought It did. It's just a simple correction didn't mean any thing by it. No need to freak out.
So why are you ragging so hard?
I wanna say stuff to agree w/ ur first statement but.. I've already said it all hours ago on a comment which is seriously delayed. So I better wait, than looking stupid in the future, saying the same thing twice.
~sigh~~~ >_> damn delays
Hepburns romanization is almost a standart.
Exemple from Wikipedia :
"the Ministry of Foreign Affairs requires the use of Hepburn on passports, and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport requires the use of Hepburn on transport signs, including road signs and railway station signs."
Oh and anon 2:25?
You said "Actually it's chotto baka."
-You were correcting him.
-There was nothing to correct.
-That's because his statement was already correct.
-The way you said it made it appear like he was wrong.
Do we really have to spell everything out for you?
^ I was correcting his statement because it WAS wrong in Hepburn romanization it would be written as "chotto" in Nihon-Shiki it would be written as "tyotto". He wrote it as "chyotto" which is wrong in either sense.
I apologize to Domo-Kun because I also made a mistake, I wrote "ragging" when I meant raging.
Geez guys cool off I meant no ill intentions just thought maybe he was learning Japanese and wanted to know he made a common mistake.
true that(that means "agree",ami I right?)
Oh god, anonymous above is irritating...
They didn't prepare the text beforehand, the show was obviously not shown live.
Both of those anime are pretty much finished...
lol too true.
Though I want her to stay with her role in Fairy Tail personally. She's doing a great job of it so far.
As for the 'mistake', those bikini tops can be ambiguous all the time. A ton of girls can make a mistake like that. It's more a 'teasing' point than anything too serious. And it's not like she's the icon of intellect. She's a seiyuu and a smalltime model/personality..
"Both of those anime are pretty much finished..."
"lol too true."
I raged inside a little...
*pats head* now now s`ok Fire. they will burn for their crimes... in time.
Lucky Star forever.
@fxc2
She may be a bit of an idiot...But she's our idiot...
Lucky Star forever..!
*crosses his fingers for the 28th time hoping for some kind of sequel*
That said, I can't really tell if the bikini is upside down since she still looks pretty good in it either way...
That picture is just brimming with MOE~
If only that blue bikini has Konata face prints on them, it would be righteously perfect...
What about the upcoming Bakemonogatari prequel to the highest selling TV anime of all time? Where she does Shinobu's voice? I don't think that ones quite finished yet.
Yeah cause Haruhi is not popular at all
isn't like everyone is raving over Disappearance........
Aya is moe btw
"The Vanishment of Haruhi Suzumiya film, the first ever film in the Haruhi Suzumiya franchise, opened on Saturday and earned in the range of 100 million yen (about US$1 million) in its first two days. That was enough to rank the 163-minute film at #7 on Kogyo Tsushinsha's weekend chart in Japan. The film opened on only 24 screens, which led to long lines and high per-screen averages in box office receipts. By comparison, the weekend's #1 film in Japan, James Cameron's Avatar, is in its seventh weekend on about 680 screens."
- ANN
24 VS. 680 still ranked #7 against the highest selling movie OF ALL TIME.
Yeah I don't think it's THAT popular...(sarcasm)
Since when is Haruhi over? There are still plenty of novels to be made into anime. I don't think they'll throw this one in the gutter. Not after the huge success of the movie, as stated by Anon 00:52.
If there's money to milk, they WILL milk it, till the very last drop.
"Yeah cause Haruhi is not popular at all"
Just how garguantic is the rock you've been living under, anon?
@XxXFl0oD3RXxX
Did you read the next line?
Shoushitsu was more of Yuki then Haruhi. :/
I believe anon was referring to the whole franchise.
If not, forgive my nit-picking.
Was that Haruhi wants to milk me?... oh wait, damn.
Oh, it does seem so.
Then, what was that first statement about? If his 2nd statement states how people are raving over the movie?
"Yeah cause Haruhi is not popular at all" ->sarcasm
"isn't like everyone is raving over Disappearance........" -> Disappearance was a big success, meaning the franchise is still pretty popular.
That's how I read it, sorry for not making it clear.
*edit*
On topic: Nowadays media is pretty desperate...
The Melancholy of Sarcasm on the Internet.
I don't think anyone would be happy if Haruhi vanished.
Fairy Tail and Jewelpet are still airing and Qwaser might get continued. Aya's not gone yet.
The biggest mistake of her career.
really Mizore? how amusing that neither are that big a deal. her mistake and career I mean.
Well....err....
I gotta admit, it's definitely her style but that doesn't call for such rude public remarks, no matter how scrutinized and hated you are.
I'm quite put off at the lack of professionalism/sensitivity by the media.
But then, this is the "media", so.... =_=
Japanese media has always been somewhat... special, it's something to love and hate...
All the fuss over a bikini... Sigh.
She's so cute... :3
nope, it's more like it helps her career. many of japanese tv idols/tarento are introduced as dumb and they are called obaka-aidoru. They want to make her as an idol who is busy being beautiful, voicing anime characters and making music cds so she has no time to learn common sense.
Or Katja (Seikon no Qwaser) or Misa (Death Note) or a host of other characters (though her Katja voice will always be one of the true voices of Aya for me).
Yurippe's seiyuu could voice Haruhi, you could hardly tell the difference. :/ But Konata? I don't think anyone could.
Listening to Konata's chara songs, she sounds exactly like Tainaka Ritsu if Aya doesn't make the Konata voice we all know and love.
