A Hong Kong event seeking to promote Kinect with the aid of some comely maidens has turned into a nightmare for Microsoft, with the revolutionary controller seemingly unable to reliably recognise even scantily clad Asian belles…
On reflection it seems almost inevitable that a first-generation motion recognition controller would fail embarrassingly whenever exhibited or handled by a Microsoft executive – little wonder Microsoft kept the device hidden away even during its launch event.

fail...
EPIC fail...
what did you expect from micrososft? This fit their image perfectly! sad as it is...
Well, the Power Glove was also a nice idea... on the paper.
Holy crap that is a hailstorm of photographs. lol
Then again, it seems even Nintendo Wii demonstration had some potential third party interruptions when they tried showing it off for E3 (Miyamoto's Zelda demo) and several others including Jimmy Fallon's world record stunt in his Late Show.
Nintendo learned from past mistakes, microsoft didn't.
Shouldnt they have done a few test runs ahead of time?
They are clearly wearing too much clothing, oh wait...
Also, God, the one in the left is a horrible dancer, can't even get the claps on the song :/
1)Gamers aren't going to be happy when slight mishaps like in the first video cost them a victory.
2)Just as I suspected. The people demonstrating that dance game at E3 all had the moves thoroughly memorized.
Cheap casual games for a buggy motion controller on the medium strength console? The fan boys will buy this crap anyway.
1) Gamers dont buy this crap, they buy a 3500dpi mouse (no wireless) or something along the line (programmable joypads?). ^^
I like how they acted like nothing happened.
Of course they will act to their best efforts, their pay depends on it.
It didn't work well cuz the girls weren't fully naked.
About that hailstorm of photos, maybe that's why it wasn't working correctly. It seemed to me that it would actually work when there was a pause in between all the strobing. Then again I agree that they really were wearing way to much clothing, so that was probably it...
@ Lilith - while im not gonna stand up for her and say she IS a good dancer in any way - i do believe her clapping was from watching the on screen character clapping - even though it was off >_>
Why would anyone need to fake running to pretend they run for a game? losing virtual weight?
Dancing was a better idea but that video looks fake.
i hate the dance central vids. The stupid game has no 1:1 motion at all but gives the illusion that it is. Really, nothing in the game will penalize you if you don't follow along. The only time it does is if you don't do a specific pose at specific parts of the song. Spectators (such as casuals) will look at the avatars and think it's really moving 1:1 with the players and will think kinect actually works.
Harmonix never said the avatar moves 1:1 with the player. It's the equivalent of the avatars in Rock Band. You can have four players sitting there not hitting a note or singing a word but the avatars on stage will still look like they're rocking out.
With a fitting blue screen it would've been perfect. ^_^
Fail because of flashes.
Perfectly fail.
on screen "Move Left"
Bitches need to follow directions.
They are off to one side of the camera.
Also standing too close together.
Not Microsoft fail, setup fail.
And here I see a flood of ignorant Microsoft fail messages by miserable Sony/Nintendo fan boys.
"MOVE LEFT" on screen.
Apparently I am the only person who can read English and understand directions?
Localization delays or hiring staffs that can't understand a foreign language. The executives in charge needed some more planning.
Microsoft's failure either way.
Marketing fail, not Xbox 360 hardware fail.
Bad marketing is bad.
"The previous event's results made for..."
Aw, I want to know what excuse they were going to use at the end of the first video.
The extreme amount of flahes from cameras?
Certainly is quite the fragile piece of hardware.
Should this stuff fail in its first 24 months of exposure to consumers I will be amused.
To be fair, the Nintendo Wiimote was a horrible piece of waggle-only feature until the Wiimotion Plus which came out YEARS later. And it can still be interfered with other electrical signals. So this isn't anything new, or only to do with Microsoft. Every company, with technology, always improves with time. I think RROD is the best example. The first gen 360s were PLAGUED with RROD issues. Nowadays, you rarely hear about Slims or Elites being RROD prone anymore. Same deal with PS3 Fats which are YLODing quite a bit. But the PS3 Slim seems to fix that.
Technology progresses. It doesn't matter who does it as long as they keep intending to support a product.
It doesn't change the fact that they have spent millions on a piece of software that is attracting bad reputation by being documented on videos all over.
Yes, the second or third generation of Kinect controllers might correct those defects, but what about the ones who buy the first generation? Is Microsoft going to exchange the inferior units to consumers? It'd be like bleeding money further.
If anything, there will be people who will "wait and see" on Kinect, just like there are people waiting on the 360 to stop being a faulty piece of hardware. I'm an example of that. And even if current 360s seem to be MUCH better, I'm still not convinced.
The difference, however, is that Kinect is SO FAR coming along with a bunch of shovelware, which warrants another wait and see on my part.
The 360 still has a very hight RROD rate, but since it's not news anymore, along with the extended guarantee and the fact than north americans don't want to accept they own a poorly done cheap pice of plastic, it started to not be the subject of conversation so much anymore. I don't hate the games, just the sistem.
Um. That is a bit of a mixed message there. Because every new technology is 'wait and see' and there's usually not that many killer aps for new game hardware unless it's more fully developed for. Considering even the Wii took quite a while to get the hang of motion controls, I don't see why either the Move or Kinect needs to be put through another set of standards. At least be glad that the system doesn't force the motion sensor on us. At least not this generation.
As for not being convinced the 360 doesn't have hardware problems anymore, I don't see what the problem is. Just don't buy the ancient first gen 360s that ARE prone to breaking and just jump straight to Slim or even the Elite. It's not rocket science. Likewise, getting the newer SKUs of Wiis and PS3s is advisable.
Leandro, the 360 'still has a high RROD rate' only because the older SKUs are still in circulation due to the free-repair policy and it's bogging down the percentile of functioning 360s of the newer SKUs. It's just a simple law of averages. Hearing about older SKUs failing is pretty frequent. I never heard of any of my friends' Elites or Slims failing however. Nor any widespread news of them failing in forums. Same old story with the new PS3 Slims which seems almost YLOD prone.
To me, releasing a product in which 1 of 3 were faulty due to RROD at launch is consumer fraud.
To me, replacing that faulty product for free at a massive loss to them is consumer service.
@Shippoyasha
The wiimote worked fine OOB for most games. I still haven't bought the add-on. That's where it differs from Kinect - everything I've seen abut it indicates that it doesn't work fine for most people on most games. Hopefully they will fix that later, but if they don't get it right to the point where people actually like it and purchase it to begin with, they may never get a chance to fix it. Even if they did, people would likely be very skeptical. MS needs to get it mostly right the first time. Nintendo did - some big flaws, but generally people were very happy with their purchase. I don't know if Kinect purchases are going to still be happy with their purchase. Then again, I'm not a heavy XBox 360 user, so maybe I'm out of touch with their base (as the base will be the primary purchases since it's only an add-on accessory).
As for the failure rates, I agree with the others here. You don't hear a lot about them anymore, but that is insufficient evidence to conclude they are not happening anymore. Data that was collected and analyzed indicated that each generation was slightly less prone to errors than the previous generation. The key word is slightly - we are talking about a few percentage points from what is believed to be a starting point of around 45-54% failure rates over a 3 year period. There's no hard data on the failure rates for the newest versions yet, but based on history, it will likely be a slight improvement. This would still put it in the 20s to 30s percentile range - nearly 1 out of 4 over 3 years.
The PS3 had issues (generally around 10% failure rate), but the total failure rate over 3 years is a fraction compared to the XBox 360, and the Wii's failure rate was in the 1-2% (some put it as high as 6%, but I didn't see sufficient data to back it up) region. I woudl check out [http://www.squaretrade.com/htm/pdf/SquareTrade_Xbox360_PS3_Wii_Reliability_0809.pdf.]http://www.squaretrade.com/htm/pdf/SquareTrade_Xbox360_PS3_Wii_Reliability_0809.pdf. It's contains a lot of good statistics, despite only covering failure rates over 1 and 2 years (the 3rd year is a killer) and only failures reported to them directly.
22:20: Last reports say that the Slim is still scratching disks.
We know the Slim scraches disk issue that's because if you move it while turn on It will scratch your disk inside the Xbox 360. Microsoft has warn consumers about this and yet not many people pay attention.
That announcement came from the game, like a few before and during the race.
*Goes back to Eyetoy on PS2*
I'd rather have a game that works than one that is higher resolution
It's said to say that you this. But you are 100% right. Eyetoy worked fine. It just went with much suppport.
Can't you see? They're still wearing too much baggy clothing! Take it all of!
LOL
Agreed
"Because Kinect need to see YOU in all your glory."

Yea...but do you remember the poor guy who got charged for indecent exposure for being naked in his OWN HOME with the so-called 'victims' peeking into his house...
No
And do you remember russian bitches biting off penises?
I don't want to.
That penis had it coming after it spit in their face. Very rude.
And the russian lady giving a would be assailant a taste of raep? Oh, wait... Completely unrelated...
In any case, maybe the girls should play completely naked and let 'em breathe. I know there would be many with smiles on their faces and guns in their pants... Err... boners...
