The reaction of Sankaku Complex users to the scathing comments of 2ch on the recent closure of One Manga has found its way back to 2ch and incited an even more biting response.

Their response to the closure of One Manga and the impudent reaction of Sankaku Complex users angry at having to use more inconvenient sources of pirated manga filled scores of threads across 2ch, and was soon picked up by any number of 2ch-centric sites.

A representative selection of their comments is translated below:

“You lot are always begging ‘give us the zip! give us the zip!’ – why is it now you suddenly start acting like you’re normal?”

“Oh come on, this is a fantastic business chance for publishers. If they don’t go for commercial digital distribution now they really are finished.”

“In America the censorship regime makes them change cigarettes into candy! How many mangaka and publishers are there interested in making that level of change!?”

“I was reading the latest Naruto in the convenience store – are the foreigners jealous of me? Forgive me, Sasuke…”

“‘We want to buy but we can’t! We’re making manga popular the world over!’ Die.”

“Just buy it and read you dirty misers!”

“Do these people feel any sense of guilt over what they’re doing to creators?”

“Serves you right, foreigners! It makes no sense at all for these manga to be available on the net in English first. Stop enjoying them before us Japanese even get them!”

“You guys sound pretty intellectual translated into English, don’t you now?”

“‘Ha Ha Ha – Serves you right!’ – someone translate this and tell it to them.”

“Pirates really do think the same the world over.”

“Impudent thieves.”

“‘Foreigner 1: Do all Japanese hate foreigners? Or is it just a minority? Or just 2ch?
Foreigner 2: Japs hate us all. Even the babies!
Foreigner 3: 2ch is how the majority of Japs think. They are polite in front of others, but behind your back they are secretly insulting you. Japs are xenophobes!’

Pretty amazing that they go this far to dress themselves up as victims.”

“It seems people on the Internet always develop these persecution complexes – whatever the country.”

“‘Foreigner 4: 2ch is not representative of all Japanese! I like Japan.
Foreigner 5: Sorry. I like Japan too. The Japanese are just angry that we’re ripping them off.
Foreigner 6: 2ch is the scum of Japan.’

The guys who understand really do understand!”

“Foreigner 6 – you are a genius.”

“‘Those Jump buyers are complete tools for waiting – hurry up and give us the zip!’

‘I don’t want to buy Jump just for One Piece. I’m glad they get uploaded at the same time as its release. I can keep up with what’s happening in this thread too.’

‘In this damn heat I don’t want to go out and read Jump – hurry up with the zip!’

‘It may only be $2 but it’s a nuisance once you’ve read it. Why won’t they just sell us One Piece without the rest?’

This is from 2ch’s Shonen Jump board.”

“Maybe this thread will be translated and become an article over there? Are you reading foreigners? If you want to read manga, be sure to learn Japanese!”

“With the market for digital manga coming up, these illegal sites are no good any more. Rawpara made $30,000, how much were those guys making…”

“Read your own country’s comics, bastards.”

“It’s a real mystery to me why these damn foreigners can’t get over the fact that you can’t just be reading all this stuff for free on a website.”

“Manga overseas costs $10 a volume though – way too much.”

“But American comics cost a fortune in Japan too…”

“It really is expensive over there. In spite of the fact the paper is shoddy rubbish…”

“Even the guys reading manga are always going on about JAP this and JAP that. Just liking manga doesn’t mean you like Japanese, I see. Japanese are really despised aren’t they?”

“Foreigners are just greedy swine by nature – that’s why they think manga is free.”

“I looked at the responses of the Sankaku inhabitants (not that I’m lumping them together with all foreigners) – pretty amazing.

It’s expensive, 99% of manga is crap, it’s translated because Japanese are uploading it, because they ripped off western culture – their excuses were all on that level. The worst ones are the ones going on about racism or xenophobia though.”

“You hairy foreigners should shut up and wait for your own great mangaka.”

“Compared to Japan and its complete absence of a digital publication market, isn’t consciousness about this much higher over there? Amazon have Kindle and stuff…”

“There are already all kinds of pirated manga on the American Kindle. They’re a real pack of thieves.”

“If all manga fans the world over start thinking manga=free, the manga industry is finished.”

“Even in Japan a lot of young people think that, about games and music too. I hope they really crack down on these sites.”

“Why do these foreigners act so high and mighty when they are reading for free?”

“This reminds me of that damn Rapelay fiasco.”

“Thanks to that we got worked over. Seriously, die you filthy foreign scum.”

“1. Foreigners pirate our manga and develop a taste for it.

2. Foreign big-wigs say ‘This content is violent! Ban it, Japan!’

This is a real problem. If publishers adapt their publications to foreign markets then OK, but just translating the original and spreading it amongst foreigners is a problem!

Do you understand this you dirty foreign scum?”

“Don’t those white pigs comprehend the concept of a thief being ashamed of being caught?”

“Blaming the victims of your own crimes, shifting responsibility to anyone else but you, justifying your own criminality. Total scum, every last one of them.”

Most manga I've read is online. I probably wouldn't have purchased any manga without that exposure. I preview, then buy my faves.

Taking down sites will just prevent future generations from reading/taking an interest in/buying manga.

The problem is that those who grow with the "free beer" mentality that makes them assume they own (or are somehow entitled to have) anything made for the public to use.

Dude, post something about Japanese people in /b/ and you'll get the same thing, just vice-versa, people are people everywhere, it's pirating, there's no reason to be mad, it was good while it lasted, piracy is not dead, get over it.

Some comments were really laugh worthy though, nice.

Taking down the websites won't "prevent future generations from reading/taking an interest in/buying manga". All it will do is force the people who read it for free either A: go somewhere else to pirate it, B: go to Borders/Barnes and Nobles and take a volume off the shelf, buy a coffee, read it, then put it back on the shelf and go home, or C: actually buy it.

The whole One Manga fiasco was rather terrible and, to a point, the users at 2ch have a right to hate us. Fan translations were suppose to be just that, fan translations that someone does for free, hand it to friends and people who go to your website/irc, and be happy they get to even read it. All one manga did was take the free translations, host it on an easy to use website, and sit back and let advertising checks roll in while doing absolutely nothing.

I have used One Manga before, so I can't say that I'm free of guilt (I enjoyed the little of The World God Only Knows that I read), but everyone needs to move on and go do something else instead of saying each country's internet users need to die.

I imagine these particular Japanese have nothing better to do than to guard their homes and complain about something stupid? This is all stupid, really.

Japan, just save me a trophy wife virgin for when I arrive, okay? I'm not here to steal your manga. Some white pigs are, but I prefer cumming in a Japanese girl's mouth and supplying newborns for your country's population deficit.

"the users at 2ch have a right to hate us."
    lol wat?
Japanese publishers may have the right to hate us, even though they never considered us part of their market and onemanga being gone changes nothing about their sales figures

Western publishers on the other hand have every right to hate us as onemanga actively destroyed their market.

Japanese peasants on the other hand have the right to shut up and continue with their sad and hateful lifes.

Definitely. OneManga was pretty much just a hub for free fan translations. I never used OneManga myself - I prefer to download, a personal thing - but I can appreaciate that many did because of convenience.

As an example, I may never have come to read Dance in the Vampire Bund if not for previewing it on the internet.

I don't mind those sites that do it for free, with some advertising or whatever (afterall, they need to pay maintenance and upkeep and whatnot), but whenever I encountered a site that required a subscription fee of some kind or other - of which I encountered a fair few - I always seethed; because that's when they're really hurting the industry, by making their site into a true business. There are laws of economics involved which are too lengthy/detailed to state here, but it basically comes down to you pay based on percieved enjoyment.

And there is always the argument for more exposure. The number of series that don't get licensed because of any number of factors means that without fan translations, we'd miss out on many series.

But somehow, I think this is an age old debate that shall never end until publishers start realising why these fan sites work, and why their models don't in comparison.

Impossible to ever take anything they fucking say seriously, all I ever imagine is one of those hilariously creepy looking otaku. Pitch black room, the dim glow from his monitor highlighting the sweat worked up from a hard day's net surfin'... you get the picture.

Basically, some website had comments about 2ch specifically, doin' what they do. They were negative, and it was such a big deal this happens. Takes a special kind of Unwarranted Self Importance to take such action.

Though I still stand on everyone doing something instead of saying "go die" to other people over the internet since that accomplishes nothing. If you truly want someone to die, there are methods to make that wish come true, but you have to work for it.

The "kill yourself plzkthks" responses are annoying because it's a dismissive response. 4chan says that crap all the time though.

I'm sure they pirate stuff too (unless Japan can't figure out how to use TOR and get torrents and do proxies and all that.) but at the same time they probably don't have the attitude of entitlement western pirates have.

It's hilarious how much attention this is getting. Taking down these manga viewer sites is like trying to fix a broken leg with a band-aid. The posters on 2ch obviously are lumping in all foreigners as thieves when it's people over from Japan who provide the raws for us to translate. It's hilarious how some of their own countrymen are working them over and then blaming us for reading and enjoying the works in a language we can understand. I wouldn't call all of them xenophobic because that is a serious stretch to lump an entire population into a category like that based on a few idiots. They assume that we believe that manga=free when that's far from the point for most people that read manga online. Most people read manga online when the companies are doing a shitty job with censoring and translation, or when the manga just isn't available over here. We don't go around saying that they shouldn't illegally download shit that was made in America (which they know they do so apparently they're all a bunch of hypocrites) so why do they feel they have to right to tell us what we can and can't do with the provided data over here. This whole situation is truly hilarious.

Only some of them were being aggressive. Think about how many people there are on the internet. Think about how many people use 2Ch.

Some people are going to lump everyone together, other people will have common sense and realize people have beliefs on an individual level.

That being said, I'm glad One Manga is gotten rid of. While I can understand stuff like the Touhou mangas being scanned since they will NEVER make it over seas in English, taking things that are either already published/licensed over here and hosting them on a giant, obvious site is ridiculous.

    FACT:

    1. no matter how much we talk about it, no matter how much 2ch hates us, piracy will never die.

    2. just because onemanga is gone doesn't mean that we won't get to stea- ehem* read their mangas anymore. onemanga is just hosting it in one place, even if it's gone, the people translating it is still around.

    3. if there are scanlations that means somebody bought them first right? who else has better access to buy it than japanese people?

i am half japanese, i lived in japan most of my life (but not anymore). the people on 2ch doesn't represent the japanese population, not all of them are like the fucktards in 2ch. and i really dont understand why they're so worked up about it, telling us to "go die"? it's not like they're losers and their life sucks just because we're reading their manga for free...

Now I have an ever growing manga collection as I buy them once they are here. Besides I cant get all the mangas here in the U.S. as several can't get published here due to laws. I do the same thing with anime. I watch it online and buy it when it comes to the U.S. I don't want to wait a year to read/watch my favorite stories/shows.

Heh, the usual crap from 2ch:

“Do these people feel any sense of guilt over what they’re doing to creators?”

Guilt? We're not doing that much at all. Weird japanese publishers who seem to think they are already rich enough decided not to sell maybe 99% of their manga to the rest of the world.

The small rest that does get sold here usually is either badly translated, censored, comes out years too late, is fucking expensive, is printed in shit quality, or several of the above.

Some people there are not braindead, though:

“Oh come on, this is a fantastic business chance for publishers. If they don’t go for commercial digital distribution now they really are finished.”

That guy hit the nail on the head. Publish online and translate to at least english, better spanish, french and german as well. This would generate tons of money, and it would all go to japan.

That really would be a good idea for them, but I think it would actually suck for foreigners. Can you imagine trying to read your favorite manga when it's in engrish (check engrish.com if you don't know engrish)?

You'd spend so much time banging your head against your desk trying to figure out what they mean that you'd lose all the enjoyment from the manga.

On the other hand, if they were smart they'd hire the scanlators that are already doing the work. But I think they're just afraid of opening new markets. After all, gaijin are scarrrrry, right?

But if they hire some from US or UK it's maybe good(not alway, the guy who translate for berserk is a horrible exam, the Chinese do much more better).

By the way, it's would be a lot of trouble to bring their product outside Japan (think about the transportation cost, task, censorship, law etc...),remember that no sane business man want to lose a potential market.

Not everyone in Japan is incapable of speaking English. In order to get the best translation or at least a half decent one, to cater to their English-speaking fans, publishers would have to round up teams of people who know how to speak English properly. Otherwise, they're going to get a shit storm of complaints saying "we don't understand your Engrish!"

The thing is, the logical conclusion of the internet revolution in regards to creative media is the demise of the whole publishing and distribution industry, or at least the almost complete loss of their previous power.

They used to be the crucial middle-man that served as the absolutely necessary bridge between artists and the customers, who held the ultimate power over who got heard, read or seen. Enter the internet, and suddenly no one really needs them any more, anyone with a dime to spare can set up their own site and reach out to billions.

The only reason the publishers and distributors are still around are mainly because people are used to having them around and that they are convenient, but no longer are they a necessity the way they were just 10 years ago.

That's why, from their perspective, the worst thing they could do would be to get their customers hooked on smoothly working and cheaper digital media. In the slightly longer run it would only serve to speed up their own demise because it would pave the way for the authors and artists to ditch them and sell directly to the customers.

I would expect that the worst problem for online publishing from Japan would be the legalities and differing social mores.

How much manga would be illegal to view in other countries if it was just translated? - maybe not too much.

Immoral though? now we have personal perspective and you start getting Fox News reports of sites corrupting youth. Then Equality Now will add another action plan on their site about the virtual victims in manga and the Diet will cave in and ban all manga of any type, at least in Tokyo, then Lord Il Pallazo appears and attacks the KyoAni studio blowing Ui's head off, only to be taken out by a Buster Machine 3 Colony drop as the 117th Angel appears and Haruhi resets...

Well i'm sure there are lots of problems we aren't that aware of anyway.

I live in India. As in most third-world countries, here hardly anyone even knows what manga is, forget about finding it in a bookstore. There's only one channel here that shows anime, and their selection is limited. Till date I've visited dozens of DVD and bookstores and asked for anime and manga, only to get confused glances in return.

Now please tell me how I(and millions of other manga/anime fans across hundreds of countries where they aren't sold) am supposed to obtain anime and manga legally.

    I'm a Japanese otaku.
I think, it's not the point whichever guilty or not guilty the way to read.

    The important point is below:
You have a will paying money,
when you enjoy a manga and thank the auther.

If you really and truly have a will to pay, there are lots of way.
For example, making a Japanese friend and asks the friend: please send money to the auther directly.
It's not difficult that sending money directly in Japan.
On Comiket (who is Dojin's), Newly-published event, or send to the publisher.

I buy all mangas not secondhands but new.
It's the way to send money and send my appreciation.
Are you REALLY willing to pay?

well i wouldn't really say its ALL bullshit.
    but they're pretty hypocritical themselves.

but if they really wanna do something about it, i think they should just expand overseas rather than selling to Licensees.

That way i think is that they can get rid of excuses such as
"i don't wanna wait for each English volume to come out"
    or
"its too expensive in comparison to the Japanese version"

well that's my 2 cents on it anyways

I think this is an issue of translation.

The Japanese use the word gaikokujin a lot. So whoever translated it, constantly repeated "foreigner" which is a very strong (and offensive) word in English.

So you keep hearing "Foreigner" "foreigner" x100.

I'm not saying Futaba channel's comments were politer than what we see here (actually, I'm sure 99% of them were that rude), but I'm just saying that people should be a tiny bit skeptical, and not just automatically accept whatever they see.

And also, it's fucking futaba channel. Look at how much 4chan uses f*g and n*gger.

    1. Futaba Channel and 2ch are two completely different things so your credibility ends there.

    2. "Gaikokujin" in Japanese basically does carry a heavy "foreigner" nuance - there is no commonly used nice way of putting that. 2ch exclusively used "gaijin" in those threads, which is definitely devoid of politeness, as opposed to gaikokujin, which is polite/official/politically correct.

Finally, 2ch is keen on saying 「害人」 rather than 「外人」 - both are pronounced "gaijin," but 害人 replaces the character for "outside" with that for "harm" for the last word in linguistic xenophobia. I generally translate this as "foreign scum."

Of course, there's always the chance we're just seeing the 'cream of the crop', you know? the juicy, ripened rage-fruit. For all we know there's just as many people there who - while objecting - have some degree of self control.
Not saying it's a bad thing, or accusing the translator or anything, just you know. Don't generalise, or you'll look the same as they do, when they generalise what they think we... etc.

Artefact, while your analysis on the difference between Gaikokujin and Gaijin is fine with me, treating homophone-replacing slang as is particularly common in Chinese and Japanese internet culture as being any more meaningful than, in this case, a mild to moderate level of disdain towards foreigners, is wrong enough to call it incorrect. If there were no other insults uttered, I'd translate it into something like "disgusting foreigners" or "stupid foreigners". Just my 2 cents, from a Baidu and 2ch's news flash board user.

    I guess it's a childish dream...

But I still have hope we could have better future relations when the old generation of paranoid moralfags of various governments and organizations die and be replaced by the new generation of anime-oriented individuals and logical people...

I'll keep on hoping that one day, anime and hentai will reunite east and west...

and whats that about "logical people" anime/manga/hentai are works of fiction so they somehow dont relate to logic(except for slice of life and some scintifical term that may appear.

and i certainly dont hope that the world gets reunited trough works of fiction and the sex versions of the same but rather trough the enjoyment of watching them (more directed to anime than hentai, or would you shake hands with your neighbours after watching hentai:D)

I don't know if you have been keeping tabs on the events concerning eroge, hentai mangas, and even regular anime shows in the past 2 years, but...

What I meant by the old generation being replaced by more logical people is because said old generation wants to give 2D (READ: fictional) women and children rights from getting sexually/violently abused...

    That's right...You are giving a drawing of a child and/or a woman human rights...

Therefore, they are (the old generation) being illogical and irrational about the whole thing..

Like that 2channer said...It began with the "Rapelay Fiasco" and accelerated to rape eroge being banned by some feminazis and moralfags from both UNICEF, Equality Now, and various religeous sects and government groups...And now it's threatening various mangas and anime...

Paranoia and Rationality...They must die and be replaced by the new generation (rational people who are knowledgeable about anime AND hentai)...

And lastly, that one huge circle jerk thing has a double meaning...

The other one aside from what you think is this...East or West...We're all together when it comes to anime and hentai...

We should not be fighting amongst ourselves...Not as Foreigner and Japanese...But as Anime and Hentai fans...That's my point...

All this hysteria...These witch-hunts...These baseless and evident-less draconic accusations towards anime and hentai...

They must perish in order for ALL OF US to get on with this ridiculous issue...

And preferably without idiots in CNN and other medias involve who don't even do their homework...

Ugh, I still remember what they did to that Touhou "Bad Apple" video...The artists at Pixiv made fun of that so bloody much...

As a non-manga reader i'd like to say what loss of sale?

First, allot of these manga are liscenced like anime, so the jap publishers already got their pound of flesh. The lost sales in those cases are absorbed by the liscence holder.

Second, around 90% of the translated manga online is not available to buy legaly unless you read kanji. How can they loose sales when they are not selling it?

Third, i'll admit that the jap publishers might be loosing a little money especially if they are releasing them overseas themselves, but the argument that online manga is free publicity and ropes in new oversees readers is a good one. There is a tipping point where the harm caused by piracy will hurt the publishers more than the publicity helps, but we won't reach that till there are alot more legit sales oppertunities. 10% is a joke.

Berners-Lee did not 'develop' or 'invent' the internet or the world wide web. What he did is come up with a document markup or tagging specification which built on substantial previous work in this area.

This 'hypertext' spec in combination with early browsers and the use of a transport protocol provided a convenient means of sharing content of all kinds over data communication channels.

Along with hardware advances, mass availability of PCs, and cheaper faster modems, the 'web' grew synergistically into what it is now: a means of providing porn; pirated anime, manga, games, movies; and access to a subset of Japanese culture for weaboos.

If anyone is responsible for the development of the web as we know it, it is the providers of porn. They pioneered many innovative html techniques, and provided a core user base.

What done did was pointless as another site will simply spring up to replace the one that was taken down.

It's mainly due to inaction by the diet, inability to adapt to a new economic climate and changed labour market ie. Gen Y.

We wouldn't be trading with Japan if it hadn't been for Matthew Perry who used his gunboats to convince Japan to open up to trade...

Actually, It's time America stopped riding on Japanese manga and anime and start dominating the industry again.

I mean if they are going to pull this crap. It's time for the sleeping giant to reawaken and devistate Japan once again.. this time with the pure powerful talent that America is good for.

I admire your patriotism, but I'm afraid there hasn't been much 'creative talent' to speak of in the comics department in the last decades. Unless, of course, killing Superman/Batman for the 15th time is 'creative'.

No matter which side of the Pacific you're on, it looks like Digital Manga Distribution is the way to go.

Aye man, its ridiculous they just dicks. But I mean I do feel bad a bit but it takes so long to get mangas especially in europe that I end up being 2 years behind. I dont see why Japanese Publishers dont just create a site like one manga like offical which you just pay for what you want to read, no subscription bollocks like crunchy roll just pay for what u want.

    Death of Publishing
    Internet Micro-payments

    problem solved.

NOW the japanese can bitch about lost sales and pirates, because it might actually make sense

and for the record, it was the publishers themselves who started the whole 'pirates from overseas are killing us' bull-crap

Are having some problems about a migratory law in the state of Arizona , then there i see sa huge group of person with (i dont know the word) "Giants Cards" saying "the illegal must keep illegal" and others similars , americas hating to the max inmigrants , and they dont remember that their country was funded by inmigrants of others countries , and i personally when im on the internet i get a lot of time the phrase ENGLISH MO THER FVKER do you SPEAK IT? , because as you can see english is not my native language and those phrase make me a hell angry becuase i learn english no because i want it , it was because of work , is like my english teacher tell me (by the way , a great teacher ) no because one rotten apple means that the other will taste like that , what i want to say is that either japanese have the fault becuase a bunch of NEETs over their 30s that can be good for something in our society or Americans and their own problems

Amusing maybe, hypocritical? absolutely, where do they think the raws for scanlation come from? scanlators simply are using stuff they already post online for their fellow japanese to read.
