The Final Fantasy XIV beta running at 5040×1050 presents quite a spectacle.
For those wondering about the technical aspects, the game is running at 5040×1050 on an i7 920 with a Radeon HD5970 5870 CFX and x4 AA on 64bit Windows 7.
Unfortunately, reported framerates will not rise above 15FPS.
A promising environment in which to kill rats.

Is the gameplay still slow as hell?
no, battle speed is up and party play goes nice and smooth.
15 FPS because ATI cards aren't fully supported yet. Those issues are being resolved. And he lies about 4x AA; the game uses multisampling (a lighter way to render), not anti-aliasing.
And for those claiming slow battle system, everything changed with the Beta...you can even mix classes now.
Also, the names are blurred because this is definetly a breach of the Beta Tester NDA, and someone doesn't want their rump prosecuted. Weird how something like screenshots from this game constitute a headline, though, when Artefact clearly dislikes this game...
Aspect ratio is clearly fucked.
The game is not optimized yet you dipshit. Go troll somewhere else whoever your name is.
Why 3x1 portrait setups are better. 15fps with $1100 worth of GPU thrown at it? And still looks like shit? (maybe it's just the screenshots) Certainly not TWIMTBP. I'm surprised SC didn't jump on the ESRB's comments about the upskirt shots or sexual innuendo contained in FFXIV though.
The game isn't optimized yet for ATI cards, hence the 15 FPS. Square already said they're fixing the problem. Also, whoever posted this originally lies about the 4x AA; the game uses multi-sampling (a lighter method of rendering), not anti-aliasing.
The gameplay is pretty fast paced since they moved it to the Beta stage - you can even mix together different class elements now. People who saw the Alpha and weren't impressed should at least give it another look instead of posting ignorantly about this.
Isn't this a breach of the Beta NDA though? I'm betting whoever took these screenshots is a Beta tester that pixelated the names to cover his rump from being prosected.
lol out of your ass.
Every graphics developer relates 4x AA to 4x MSAA.
Multisampling IS a form of antialiasing.
I kinda lol'd at this...
well, first, to save $$
Whoopdy doo, more graphics. Because those totally trump music, characters, story and gameplay.
My immediate thought was that maybe the poor framerate comes from the fucking overkill resolution? Who the hell plays at 5040?! Has anyone playing at a REASONABLE rez had any issues? I've been signed up for the beta since it opened but haven't been let in yet.
Gigantic Panorama? All the better to look at in close detail while my character takes forever killing a pig.
Time to buy 6 new monitors.
and 2 ATI graphics cards, because only they can drive 3 monitors a card, nvidia only can drive 2.
There's even special monitors that have ultra-thin bezels (the borders of the monitor) to make multi-monitor panoramic views possible without much interruption.
I played the Alpha Version and seriously this game is crap.
Graphics are absolutely fine, but the rest sucks. The fighting is slow as hell, the character control is as bad as can be. Maybe the beta did change some of these things and maybe i wil ltake a look at it, but unless you are allready a fan of the last FF MMO you should leave your fingers off this game
How can you really say the released game is going to be crap when you've only played the alpha? Very weak reasoning.
because alpha has all the mechanics, its just not tweaked, and there are still bugs. beta adds better graphics and fixes game breaking bugs.
remember, this is a general rule of thumb. a mmo alpha is any other games beta.
and from what i remember they sped combat up in the beta, and increase bump mapping, but thats about it.
playing an alpha for an mmo gives you a GREAT idea if the game will be good or not. and sense they didn't reinvision anything sense the alpha, you can assume most if not all the mechanics are untouched.
have you even played the beta? They quite drastically changed some game mechanics in the beta and all in all it's alot better than the alpha.
Heck they even redid certain stuff from scratch because the old way wasn't working out.
making the combat "faster" isn't changing the mechanics.
also lets also say that meta game mechanics like crafting in any asian rpg are ALWAYS broken almost beyond repair. here ill give you an example of what i mean.
dog shit + tree bark + 2 rare items that you only know you need by reading an faq = a steel sword
that is fucking broken .
core combat, beyond speeding it up, what changed significantly between alpha and beta that isnt just minor tweaks?
and YES i want to be PROVEN WRONG. i want a non grind fest asian rpg, especial an mmo, but i know what asia thinks is fun and what they call rpgs, and its all the same.
Fail for being under a rock since the alpha. XD
1050 with ultra wide screen.
For the system requirements here quoted, the game doesn't seem very promising.
Even a new release of the already exhausted World of Warcraft would look more impressive.
actually reports are that due to the close proximity of WoW: Cataclysm and FFXIV's release, there have been over 20000 preorder cancellations of WoW: C in favour of a preorder of FFXIV.
Can't wait for this game. But damn, looks like I'll have to upgrade my gaming rig...
I've never actually been a fan of MMORPG but I have never tried one either. Maybe its about time. Should I?
you love an mmorpg you need 2 things.
1) good friends in real life to come with you.
2) time to kill
every mmo has allot of grinding, and if you have nothing better to do playing the game with some friends and killing at the same time is pretty fun.
It depends on you. If you like RPGs, you will propably love MMORPGs too. I remember, when I started wow, I've never played any RPG before, but I really enjoyed it. Is still remember my playing days as a very good memory.
Get some friends together and make sure you all get on the same server.
holy shit who the fuck needs this kind size? if you own a movie theater yeah but no just no. i would rather concentrate on having a good stable 60FPS along with a higher graphics card and memory and were all set.
you only need 10fps to play a mmo, 15 is very playable as far as an mmo is concerned
That is AWESOME! Need to start saving up for a better rig...
If someone stands with their body half cut off on the left side of the screen, does the other half show up on the right side?
I hope this isn't another HD storybook...
If you mean the inevitable High-Res FFXIV futa doujins that will hit Comiket and Toranoana shelves...
Now that's a storybook filled with fem-cum that I won't mind reading...
Square always knew how to make things beautiful..now they have to learn how to make that work out...
Not happening, Sqaure-Enix will eventually end up like Namco is by dishing out the same crap over and over again as much as I hated FF7, FF8, and such those are much better than whats happening today.
So basicially it's another FF13 game that looks good but can't deliver the battles... They obviously didn't learn from their mistake.
Obviously you know nothing about this game as learning from their past experiences is more or less what this game is.
You may not realize it but not making their games exactly how you want them to is not the same as making bad games.
You need to stop basing your opinions on some shit articles you read on this website and actually play the game before spewing that BS.
Are you seriously expecting a speedy/flashy 'console action game' type battle system in a MMORPG designed to have NA, EU, and JP players all playing on the same international servers? The whole scale of the game and latency issues wouldn't allow for such a thing.
Or are you basing your opinions on some low level grind gameplay, which by the way, was bashed on this website for being too slow on the ALPHA version of the game. The beta has improved the system significantly. Either way, you need the stick to WoW or w/e the hell your short attention span gets off to and stay the fuck away from FF14.
Oh, and fyi the battle system in FF13 was actually really good...
"Are you seriously expecting a speedy/flashy 'console action game' type battle system in a MMORPG designed to have NA, EU, and JP players all playing on the same international servers?"
Actually, FFXIV will have international servers like FFXI has.
i bash jrpgs because they are behind the times, by allot and are generally not very fun.
dragon quest 9 is an exception, and there are many, but generaly this is what you can expect from an rpg from asia
grinding -
look at everquest 1, on a good day i can pull level 1 - level 46 out of my ass solo, on a good week level 1-70 a good month level 1 to 80 and depending on the server i may go to level 85 in 2 months.
an should work this way. for the first year, you make every zone a necessity, after that year you make fast tracks to mid game, where most mmos open up and after the first level increasing expansion, you make a fast track to old world endgame group.
most mmos from america or europe work this way if they are big enough. most asian rpgs have 10x the grinding requirements at low levels and make the end game grind requirements close to what its like in western ones.
i bash ff because they havent pulled a good ff game out of there ass sense 6 and they have been rideing its corpse sence.
i bash mmos because of the single gear tree objectives.
there should never be a single piece of endgame gear. THIS IS THE BEST SWORD, there should be 10 - 20. in the mmos i played, many weapons look the same, and most armor does too, but you know what they have by there level, that should never be possible unless every piece of gear has its own look.
there are more reasons but im getting way off track
I sincerely hope not thou all the evidences point the other way...
Depends. The problems on FFXIII were largely by design.
With FFXIV, the team is grappling with technology it can't get a good handle on. That's a symptom of how technically backward the Japanese industry is as a whole.
Many old school programmers are now getting out to do indie iPhone games and whatnot, yet the younger ones are unable to pick up where they left off (poor college education is often blamed here since industry know-how tends to be locked within the big companies, who're also unable to keep up).
From that point of view they could just use already made engines, like the cryengine, which doesn't cost very much. :)
15fps because shitty FFXIV still isn't CF (or multi-GPU-card) friendly!
Most the frame rate issues so far in the beta are the result of bad server optimization not game performance. They have a horrible latency that causes all sorts of end user frame rate drops.
seriously, 15fps is unplayble... and its using pretty much top of the range hardware worth couple of grand....
oh..... they also forgot to add annoying bars in between the monitors...
lol 15 fps is not unplayable for this game
Seems someone didn't play FFXI during 2004-6 doing camps and raids with more than 100 people and less than 5 fps, and was very much playable.
I'm yet to upgrade my PC, and the beta ran between 15-20 at low settings, with no gameplay problems at all. This is not a FPS or action game.
no its not that. you see whats recommended to play this thing at 720p? a fucking i7 920 and a gforce 470
i may have the worng model i7 though.
piss poor game optimization if you ask me
wrong. This game's engine is just built for hardware specs that won't come out till a couple of years in the future. They made the game future-proof so that the graphics wouldn't look obsolete a few years for now, like WoW's is now...
Future-proof? You sure? Some 2-year-old PC games look better than this on the same hardware.
look at everquest 2
when that came out i had a top of the line single gpu computer
that game looked amassing at 1024x768 with high graphics.
i bumped everything to max just to see what it was like back than. to took over 1miute to draw frames.
the point being that the difference between high and ultra was EVIDENT. there was a clear distinction between what it is now and what it can be down the line.
WOW came out with a different view point. while the game wasn't less of a technical marvel (eq2 was the first game that i saw in magazines where characters cast dynamic real time shadows on each other, this was early EARLY builds of it too) but because of the art style, you can argue that it looked better than a technically superior game. now im going to look at the screenshots above again, as they are bigger than 720p.
THIS IS NOT WHAT A GAME THAT REQUIRES THAT MUCH HARDWARE TO RUN AT 720P SHOULD LOOK LIKE.
ill give it until launch to either optomise code, or to generally fucking wow me graphically, but i know it wont. here this is what eq2 did
it had grass that moved as you moved through it, and was effected by "wind" at the time this was new. it had a literal fuck ton of grass and other shit. it had the high res textures like this too, think of it like crysis (compared to other games) like texture wise. general models in eq2 were also way ahead of there time graphically and they had spell effects for even low level spells that aren't seen in many fatacy games of today. and allot of that was at playable resolutions and graphical setting for back than, i have no idea now, i stopped playing that game before major computer upgrades. but this game
even at the best setting (i assume thats what screenshots by square are taken at, and game play vids) th game looks like crap for its hardware requirements.
Lolgraphics.
I'd hate to defend WoW, but I'll point out that their aesthetic style makes it somewhat timeless.
Poor optimisation has no excuse.
WoW does still look quite pleasing (at least as long as you don't zoom into first person). Flying high is breathtaking. I liked WoW's graphics more than WAR's (3 years older).
Third picture: Pixel breaks everywhere, shitty "rope texture" thrown on a polygon rod, and random blurring that seems to make no distinction between foreground and background(look in the shrubs to the left, the rope to the right). Future proof? This looks obsolete now.
Time to throw out your PC's pcgamers! A knew game has high requirements, hurry to newegg or else you won't be l33t and getting high fps!!!
God, they really are just flat out..
lol bout to say. 3 GPUs and only 15 fps, wtf
There are ways to force SLI and Crossfire so that it does run with them. People have done it for the benchmark and in-game.
HOly crap the female characters are delishhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I GOTTA play this game. Thank god there's an oppai adjustment slider, I don't want it to get in the way.
If you use 3 screens and 3 GPUs it sure will look bombastic.
I'm pretty sure the 15 fps thing is joke because the game runs slow...
