The Final Fantasy XIV beta running at 5040×1050 presents quite a spectacle.

For those wondering about the technical aspects, the game is running at 5040×1050 on an i7 920 with a Radeon HD5970 5870 CFX and x4 AA on 64bit Windows 7.

Unfortunately, reported framerates will not rise above 15FPS.

15fps because shitty FFXIV still isn't CF (or multi-GPU-card) friendly!

There are ways to force SLI and Crossfire so that it does run with them. People have done it for the benchmark and in-game.

seriously, 15fps is unplayble... and its using pretty much top of the range hardware worth couple of grand....

oh..... they also forgot to add annoying bars in between the monitors...

lol 15 fps is not unplayable for this game

Seems someone didn't play FFXI during 2004-6 doing camps and raids with more than 100 people and less than 5 fps, and was very much playable.

I'm yet to upgrade my PC, and the beta ran between 15-20 at low settings, with no gameplay problems at all. This is not a FPS or action game.

no its not that. you see whats recommended to play this thing at 720p? a fucking i7 920 and a gforce 470

i may have the worng model i7 though.

piss poor game optimization if you ask me

wrong. This game's engine is just built for hardware specs that won't come out till a couple of years in the future. They made the game future-proof so that the graphics wouldn't look obsolete a few years for now, like WoW's is now...

    Lolgraphics.

I'd hate to defend WoW, but I'll point out that their aesthetic style makes it somewhat timeless.

    Poor optimisation has no excuse.

Third picture: Pixel breaks everywhere, shitty "rope texture" thrown on a polygon rod, and random blurring that seems to make no distinction between foreground and background(look in the shrubs to the left, the rope to the right). Future proof? This looks obsolete now.

WoW does still look quite pleasing (at least as long as you don't zoom into first person). Flying high is breathtaking. I liked WoW's graphics more than WAR's (3 years older).

    look at everquest 2

when that came out i had a top of the line single gpu computer

that game looked amassing at 1024x768 with high graphics.

i bumped everything to max just to see what it was like back than. to took over 1miute to draw frames.

the point being that the difference between high and ultra was EVIDENT. there was a clear distinction between what it is now and what it can be down the line.

WOW came out with a different view point. while the game wasn't less of a technical marvel (eq2 was the first game that i saw in magazines where characters cast dynamic real time shadows on each other, this was early EARLY builds of it too) but because of the art style, you can argue that it looked better than a technically superior game. now im going to look at the screenshots above again, as they are bigger than 720p.

THIS IS NOT WHAT A GAME THAT REQUIRES THAT MUCH HARDWARE TO RUN AT 720P SHOULD LOOK LIKE.

ill give it until launch to either optomise code, or to generally fucking wow me graphically, but i know it wont. here this is what eq2 did

it had grass that moved as you moved through it, and was effected by "wind" at the time this was new. it had a literal fuck ton of grass and other shit. it had the high res textures like this too, think of it like crysis (compared to other games) like texture wise. general models in eq2 were also way ahead of there time graphically and they had spell effects for even low level spells that aren't seen in many fatacy games of today. and allot of that was at playable resolutions and graphical setting for back than, i have no idea now, i stopped playing that game before major computer upgrades. but this game

even at the best setting (i assume thats what screenshots by square are taken at, and game play vids) th game looks like crap for its hardware requirements.

Most the frame rate issues so far in the beta are the result of bad server optimization not game performance. They have a horrible latency that causes all sorts of end user frame rate drops.

    @Darkrockslizer 07:12 :

Ever been to Dutch Harbor, Alaska, USA?

The boys there go to the town dump and shoot rats with their .22 caliber rifles. It's entertainment, and how they show off their mad skillz to the girls.

If you're over 21, there's a -- the only? -- bar, which is called "The Elbow Room". When I first saw it, I asked my friend who was living there, "Why are all the windows boarded up -- from the _inside_?"

She told me it was because the glass had been broken out so many times during fights, the owners gave up on replacing it.

Depends. The problems on FFXIII were largely by design.

With FFXIV, the team is grappling with technology it can't get a good handle on. That's a symptom of how technically backward the Japanese industry is as a whole.

Many old school programmers are now getting out to do indie iPhone games and whatnot, yet the younger ones are unable to pick up where they left off (poor college education is often blamed here since industry know-how tends to be locked within the big companies, who're also unable to keep up).

You need to stop basing your opinions on some shit articles you read on this website and actually play the game before spewing that BS.

Are you seriously expecting a speedy/flashy 'console action game' type battle system in a MMORPG designed to have NA, EU, and JP players all playing on the same international servers? The whole scale of the game and latency issues wouldn't allow for such a thing.

Or are you basing your opinions on some low level grind gameplay, which by the way, was bashed on this website for being too slow on the ALPHA version of the game. The beta has improved the system significantly. Either way, you need the stick to WoW or w/e the hell your short attention span gets off to and stay the fuck away from FF14.

Oh, and fyi the battle system in FF13 was actually really good...

i bash jrpgs because they are behind the times, by allot and are generally not very fun.

dragon quest 9 is an exception, and there are many, but generaly this is what you can expect from an rpg from asia

    grinding -
look at everquest 1, on a good day i can pull level 1 - level 46 out of my ass solo, on a good week level 1-70 a good month level 1 to 80 and depending on the server i may go to level 85 in 2 months.

an should work this way. for the first year, you make every zone a necessity, after that year you make fast tracks to mid game, where most mmos open up and after the first level increasing expansion, you make a fast track to old world endgame group.

most mmos from america or europe work this way if they are big enough. most asian rpgs have 10x the grinding requirements at low levels and make the end game grind requirements close to what its like in western ones.

i bash ff because they havent pulled a good ff game out of there ass sense 6 and they have been rideing its corpse sence.

i bash mmos because of the single gear tree objectives.

there should never be a single piece of endgame gear. THIS IS THE BEST SWORD, there should be 10 - 20. in the mmos i played, many weapons look the same, and most armor does too, but you know what they have by there level, that should never be possible unless every piece of gear has its own look.

there are more reasons but im getting way off track

Obviously you know nothing about this game as learning from their past experiences is more or less what this game is.

You may not realize it but not making their games exactly how you want them to is not the same as making bad games.
