Three Gorges Dam Most Majestic

As well as being the world’s largest dam, China’s magnificent Three Gorges Dam also appears to be functioning as the world’s largest garbage strainer.
Torrential rains have seen the dam discharging record amounts of water, estimated at 70,000 cubic metres a second.
However, rains have also washed record amounts of rubbish into the dam, threatening to impede its operation unless authorities can remove the tons of garbage now collecting there (admittedly the fault of floods and Chinese attitudes to waste management rather than anything to do with the dam itself).
Aside from the dam’s unintended rubbish collecting abilities, its environmental impact is generally thought to have been highly favourable – the power it provides is said to have replaced the burning of millions of tons of coal and allowed increased river traffic.

can't you see...in China...crappy dam is fed by trashy water...garbage is pulverized inside and turned into radioactive energy
Lol, this kid here don't know what he's talking about.
I hate this Dam rubbish.
Wow. That's insane.
i think i saw cracken over there.
oh its only a pile of rubbish.
that's the biggest toilet i HAVE ever seen
Guys you are not seeing the bigger picture.
If china was hit by a nuke, they would survive the radiation.
Wow GO CHINA GO
Not all of the waste in China is Chinese (though a great deal is). The outdated computer hardware that US companies send to there and Ghana is a site to see. Societies/Governments feign ignorance because they can. Some sort of population check has to come about since war is on the sidelines.
waste management ??? IMAGINE HAVING WASTE MANAGEMENT OWWW NO!!! CANT DO THAT!!!! .....honestly wtf?
Fuck the china g0v.
This reminds me of one of the more recent chapters of one piece. There was a massive collection of trash outside the walls of a city near Luffy and Ace's general area of living when they were kids. Perhapse various parts of China and this filthy dam were the inspiration for the setting in that perticualar story arc.
oh goodies! more material for bridges.
This is China! They should have a garburating function on the dam.
At least all that trash did get out in the ocean. But damn, all that trash! That water has got to be very scummy.
Well, at least it's trash that's wasted, and probably will be somehow collected.
In the glorious USA's oil spilling, on another hand..
I'm sorry, where is this "USA" oil spilling located? If you talking about the off shore oil rig spill in the Gulf of Mexico then your source of information or your understanding is quite limited. BP or Beyond Petroleum is a "British" company which was used to be called "British Petroleum." Please, pick up a newspaper that is something worth the time and not ones that are always putting blame on US or are you just a glorious idiot?
Fun fact, just because a company originates in one country doesn't mean that all of it's operations are undertaken in the name of said country. BP is a multinational corporation, and it's american arm is staffed by americans. Ergo, the drilling plan, created by americans, as well as the maintenance issues and negligence, attributable to americans, and the non-existent inspections, also american, sum up to american fault. As well, the laws [of america] that allowed offshore drilling [in america] were deficient [crafted by americans]. You're trying to push blame around, but you have nothing to stand on.
I'll have you know that blaming the US for ecological tragedies that are a foreign country's fault is a decidedly unpleasant faux-pas. Read a newspaper or something.
Only in China
In China dams trash you.
That is true from what I heard
Is there anyway to see it via satelite view like google earth?
Just cause you said that I downloaded google earth and looked. Apparently you can find it by just typing in the Three Gorges Dam while over China. It even gives you a 3D view and information about it.
I guess it didn't have the huge amount of garbage when the picture was taken though =/
Well, hydroelectric is better than coal, but this particular dam also has numerous environmental problems, and they displaced many people and destroyed many historical sites with that reservoir. Not to mention, the risk of earthquakes that could crack that damn and flood everything downstream in the Yangtze river (which is a fairly significant risk in China) is also problematic.
If nothing else, though, one has to admire the scale. Now if only they could get their sanitation situation straightened out (and maybe lose the authoritarian government while they were at it), it'd be an unequivocal point of national pride.
Second to last pick: That is seriously one giant shit storm.
that's one damn hell hole.
The guy on the left in pic 07 is probably like "OH SHIT", while the one on the right is like "Ha! I get it lol"
There's just too many people in China...
They need to stop spawning at the speed of zerg.
If they manage to bring their population down by lets say at least 25%, then maybe they'll be able to at least manage their garbage somewhat...
I just don't understand how their population can keep growing with their 1 child only policy and with their disproportionate gender ratio. Apparently they are supposed to be at something like 60% male and 40% female.
Humans are the Earth's worst pest...
Earth has no intrinsic value.
All life is parasitic in nature. Even plants.
^ if you guys want to learn about nature and parasites of the Earth I suggest you watch the excellent anime Nausicaa of the valley of the wind.
First, if you have enough money you can compensate the state to have a second or even third child.
Second, the number of wifeless young men is only about 150,000. Though it is growing every year, way short of 60/40.
Third, 100,000+ women from S/E asia are moving to china every year to be brides. Especially from N Korea. Marriage Brokers are big buisness in S/E China.
You'd think that with something so huge and something that cost so much money, they'd care a bit more about what gets lodged in it. Apparently, that isn't the case.
Then again, if you're using the rest of China as an example, it really shouldn't come as that much of a surprise.
It just makes me wonder how much longer until someone actually cracks down on all the garbage, though.
someone should crack down on it with a Aviation Thermobaric Bomb
This dam is one hell of an engineering work. I've been to Itaipu personally once and it is astonishing. Three Gorges must be monstrous!
Engineering aside, it's a pity they wasted such beautiful power plant in a shitty country like China.
Still, good to see them tasting their own medicine. You fuck nature, nature fucks you ;)
I do pity some Chinese though, there are good ppl there. Unfortunately.
Unfortunately, you do not resemble the meaning of "worthy of".
"Engineering aside, it's a pity they wasted such beautiful power plant in a shitty country like China."
Whos the "they"? Chinese? Duhh, chinese builds something in China which americunts cant? You jealous or what? yeah f*ck you hard.
Problem is, nature fucks everyone, not only them.
This dam is actually so huge that it shifted the earth's center of gravity.
my dick is so big, the three gorges dam is like my pee in the morning
Retard Alert!
It's unfortunately a fact, the water collected behind tilted the Earth's axis by 0.7 degress.
Holy shit. Let's hope they make the world's first garbo-electric dam - you know, with turbines that won't be trashed by chopping up old fridges, wires, tools, and random shit...
Really, I'd have thought that for strictly selfish practical reasons they'd crack down on anyone sending this stuff toward such an expensive and important site.
Hopefully China's superintendent will show up and clean out the damn garbage disposal.
So, you think they just launch a big operation to clean it up and send it to another country ?
They already have tons of problem to care about. Most important is their power.
Highly favorable environmental factor? This dam literally killed off several species in its creation. Primarily the Yangtze river dolphin. China is in my top list of filthy countries, followed closely by Victorian England.
China + Hygine = Does Not Compute.
Had been and has been since 5000 years ago... till 1949
If environmentalists had their way, the only way the world would have for generating electricity would be solar panels in Nevada.
Fuck you ^^
lol, I'm currently studying Human Geography now, and the case study for environmental pollution is the Three Gorges Dam XD
China has the manpower and money to build massive structures like that, but still has citizens living in total poverty. They need to get their priorities straight.
If they focused on improving the living conditions, they wouldn't have as much money to build massive structures.
Victorian England shoudln't be anywhere near the top of the list... but the main issue I have is that your top ten aren't all "China".
Some other Asian countries are there, and if pollution is taken into account (makes sense), the US is there too.
Current information management process: "Economy first". There's barely room to care for our species, how do you expect for "them" to care for the rest of the fauna?
they're probably gonna dump the trash further down the river too
When i first saw this dam on national geographic it's like wow...
when i see the same dam here it's like eeew...
*Sigh*.......China...
Knowing they're cleaning only to keep the dam functional, they're gonna throw the extracted waste right over to the other side of the dam to save the transportation fees.
@18:16 Anon, your internet sarcasm detector is broken, you might want to get that checked out.
@soyokaze I lol'd
Why in the world would they teach you that? That's not fact, more like belief.
I guess you were raised while being feared and admired, but not loved, so that you wouldn't eat your parents unaware. After all, you're probably a part of 'each and every living being', no?
China quality again!
We do not love China, for the fukc's sake. Didn't they teach you in the biology class that each and every living being has to be admired and feared but not loved, so it wouldn't eat us unaware?
There not evil, there economically viable.
And thats why we love china!1!
i'd hate to be livin' in a van down by "that" river. RIP chris farley.
China built the world's largest garbage dam to contain the worlds greatest trash dump.
The great damp of China.
The Great Wall?
Lol who gives a fuck about animals? Kill them all I say.
Ur a fuckin ANIMAL to weather or not u like it so why dont u go die
We are all mammals, but whether we are animals is up to interpretation. It all depends upon your definition.
1. any member of the kingdom Animalia, comprising multicellular organisms that have a well-defined shape, can move voluntarily, actively acquire food...ect.
In this case, yes humans are animals
2. any such living thing other than a human being
In this case, humans are not animals
3. a mammal, as opposed to a fish, bird, etc.
Yes
4. the physical, sensual, or carnal nature of human beings; animality: the animal in every person.
Yes
5. an inhuman person; brutish or beastlike person
No
Courtesy of dictionary.com
P.S. Definition 2 makes no sense to me since under this def. plants are animals also. O.0
Under those definitions, the interpretations are completely subjective.
Number 2 was made in the sense to raise humans above animals and by extension monkeys and in other words the reason why there was the debate to begin with.
Number 5 is meant as an insult to describe the inhuman traits that a human can have.
Hope you like being a vegetarian once there's no living meat left to reproduce.
how about you go die in a fire instead. World will be a better place without you
you know we americans are TECHNICALLY the number 2 polluter although we keep our streets cleaner and most of that trash still goes to landfills.
