2ch on One Manga: “Good Riddance to Foreign Thieves!”

2ch’s usual scathing response lends some insight as to how the closure of the world’s biggest manga piracy site sits with Japanese manga fans.
As ever, not all of their opinions are based on sound information or reason:
“Won’t they just start another site under a new name?”
“The biggest illegal distributor online, eh? Hurry up and destroy the rest.”
“Teach them the consequences of serious crime!”
“Just deleting them won’t stop it – the data will live on forever. You have to put in place fines and make it a serious crime or you’ll never stamp it out. It’s the same with music and movies.”
“With the major source gone I expect the small ones will die off too.”
“Scanlation won’t disappear, but a billion monthly page views is obviously going too far.”
“The industry has brought this strange situation upon itself by not seeking damages. Being forced to pay damages would have set a precedent and discouraged them from being so brazen.”
“Now get rid of Megauploader – they are busy making money off fansubs!”
“Manga is wasted on foreigners. Those outside Japan should stick to reading manhwa!”
“With a billion page views they must have been rolling in it. Best to sue them.”
“The reason it came to this is probably because this content is only that of the yellow races. They should have sued first like Nintendo. They’ve probably got used to scanlation so it’s no good now.”
“Good move. Now do it more with music and movies too.”
“It’s the fault of those idiot publishers for doing nothing. Whilst Hollywood was busy protecting its copyrights they just let it slide. You reap what you sow.”
“With the strong yen they are probably aiming to curb Japanese copying.”
“The disease has spread too far – the market seems to be collapsing like that of anime. It’ll be layoffs and bankruptcies from here on.”
“They enjoy making scanlations – it’s like a club activity to them.”
“It’s like that for fansubs too, but they’re all saying they are helping propagate them. Even the guys writing ero-doujinshi don’t think like that.”
“If you don’t release simultaneously with the Japanese release they will pirate them. They are that committed.”
“They get them even faster than the Japanese regions do. It’s too much…”
“What a bunch of crooks. They make a fortune off donations and advertising revenue. They pretend they are creators and heroes. I want to watch Hollywood movies and American dramas at the same time as their US release. Of course, for free.”
“Overseas manga is ridiculously expensive, so that’s probably behind One Manga’s popularity. However you look at it, ¥2,000 for a single volume is way too much.”
“If the prices drop they’ll just start using censorship as an excuse instead.”
“They wouldn’t buy even if it were cheap. Their anime is far cheaper than in Japan and they still won’t buy.”
The indignation of Japanese anime and manga fans who see themselves having to support an audience of freeloading international fans unwilling to support creators, whilst themselves paying top dollar to ensure even niche audiences can have their needs met, is perhaps not unreasonable, however unsightly its manifestation may be at times.

I didn't know I could buy subtitled licensed DVDs of Bakemonogatari in the western world!
You could wait for it to be licensed, that's what they're implying. That we can't wait for them to be released in the west.
Most of the anime don't get licensed though.
the problem is more of it being licensed too late, rather than anything else.
Yeah, if a show has finished airing more than two months ago, it's not interesting for me anymore.
excuses excuses...
Guess what, I get ZERO manga and only Pokemon/Digimon/Yugioh/Bakugan anime product releases in my country.
Besides most of those 2channers are hypocrites, let the internet user who has never used a pirated content throw the first rock.
wait... it's wrong to watch something that aired on tv without paying???
i hope the police doesn't come to my home and confiscate my tv.
wow those fucking 2h nerds. id rage a them hard for talking down bout onemanga yah ppl treat it like a club activity so what. if the dam manga was released all over north america for good prices then onemanga wouldnt exist. retards fucking retards. people do what they can to read or watch their interests even if it means getting scans. btich ass 2h .__.
*looks at topic*
*goes back to Manga Fox*
Now only if official online manga sites have such a great level of distributions.
Though haters still harp on Crunchyroll, gotta admire how they can push the content out in fast notice. Now only if they get better translators and do more karaoke translations and actually quality-check stuff more often..
Too all you faggots who argued that we should wait for licensed DVD, please turn your attention to the Seto no Hanayome advertisements on sankaku... it got licensed after more than three years of airing in Japan...
that's just http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZkcoB7RiMg&feature=related [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZkcoB7RiMg&feature=related]
Anon 15:23 - Seriously? Didn't anyone ever teach you about the virtue of patience? "Good things come to those who wait" and all that? And my patience is being rewarded because I'm finally getting to see ToraDora. Do I care that it is far behind the Japanese airing? No, I'm just so happy to finally get to see it that I gladly paid for it, the premium edition, no less.
And don't get me started on the others that I've waited on that have begun to materialize. They might have aired years ago for the Japanese, but for me, this is the best possible time. Funds willing, I plan to scoop them all up - regardless of how "old" they are.
Seriously, does everyone have to live in eternal "instant gratification" all the time? Wait a while... sometimes it makes it all that much better (uncensored editions, etc), and in some cases, gives you the chance to opt out of watching something you would have hated anyway.
>Karaoke translations
Ew.
I can't blame the Japanese for wanting to protect what's rightfully theirs, but when they it's this easy to pirate it's hard not to.
If we could pay for all the anime and manga we want without dropping out of school and getting a crappy job to support our habit, we would. But for most young people, their allowance or the money left over after paying the bills, just won't cover the cost of all of the things they want. Can you blame people for being smart with their money?
@14:43 In Germany it IS illegal weirdly enough.
well part of the reason it watch fansubs is to see if i like it or not, and i do buy the dvd's if i do!
another reason is merchendise.. ae figures, cards etc. If i wait for it to be licensed and released in the us, after 3 years.. say i love the series and want a figure of the main character... woops! too late, sold out years ago..while some merchindise does make it the us, not all of it.. so to me thats a better reason..
and its true, not all anime is licensed.. If i wait for Macross Frontier to be licensed.. i'd be Dead before it happens!!!!
So these Weebos can sit and rotate!
@ 16:59
Pff nowai man, where I live they barely sell anime or manga.. And where they actually do sell them (which is far from where I live) it's very limited what i can buy, since they only got about 12-23 licensed animes in my country.. And if I were to buy a DvD-box set it'll cost me about 90$ for 13 episodes...
@ 23:50 we germans do pay for our tv...
... it´s called GEZ
"another reason is merchendise.. ae figures, cards etc. If i wait for it to be licensed and released in the us, after 3 years.. say i love the series and want a figure of the main character... woops! too late, sold out years ago..while some merchindise does make it the us, not all of it.. so to me thats a better reason.."
Merchandise in the US? The only anime figure shops I know of import their stuff directly from Japan. I cant think of a single anime figure with packaging aimed at the west or something. Anyway, I dont see how it has to do with pirating since its very hard and unusual to pirate things like figures.
I just wish Japanese creators didnt hate the west so much. I dont understand why they do and why many refuse to bring stuff over here. Well, if they wont bring it out here, we just have to pirate it, its just how it is.
@Anon 02:40:
Bingo. We are the only country who does this on the whole planet. Sad, isnt it?
@07:52 : Yeah and we also are the only country with a fucking BpjM and a fucking Index! -__-
Sorry to ruin your 'All hail Germany coz we pay for TV' thing you've got going on but Britan at least also pays for TV (Channels 1 thru 5). Then you have to pay for things like Sky too right so ... TV really isn't free.
I agree on the merchandise angle. I've always wondered what sellers at cons like Fanime and AX think about fansubs. Given that so much of the figures and goods have to do with recent series, they must like them very much. I know I'd never drop 60 bucks on a figure to a show I've never seen. Fan translations will always play a part in building a fanbase. plain and simple.
I also agree that so many of those commentators are hypocrites or people that barely understand what they're talking about. I particularly love the ones championing the actions of the RIAA and MPAA. If ever there been shining examples of how NOT to "protect" one's copyrights, it's those too (especially the former).
“It’s like that for fansubs too, but they’re all saying they are helping propagate them. Even the guys writing ero-doujinshi don’t think like that.”
Yeah, I'm sure they just make them for the noble cause of producing stroke fodder. Wow...Anime fandom on both sides of the ocean have long reveled in illegal activities. Nothing new there.
You are an idi--- uninformed human for saying that. We don't pay because we want to, we pay because the government forces us to do it wether we look government sponsored television or not. It's brainless.
You gotta admit most of them are stupid rants.
1) Subtitling is faster to do than Dubbing. The best part about it is that you can easily enter the words in whatever language you need once you have the timing. Obviously Dubbing requires people to Voice Act and that's a lot more work.
2) If a Subber fan group can sub an anime in less than a day and do it DECENTLY, then there is no excuse to NOT release the DVDs and manga at the same time world wide as they do in Japan.
3) Some people DO wish they would air it in their own country. The problem is that most countries don't air it and so no one has the chance to watch it on TV, even without Subs.
4) Foreign companies selling Japanese manga are leechers more so than the fan scanslator/subbers. They are the ones attempting to take money and profit while subbers do it on their free time and for no profit.
5) Foreign companies suck. I remember Oh My Goddess releasing volume 16 while in Japan they had volume 30! I couldn't even buy the next volume for 2 years before 17/18 came out. All the while they added 3 more volumes in Japan. You can't blame those who can't even buy it. The companies themselves are screwing both ends.
etc etc etc. I think most of us can understand the Japanese side and criticize them. But the bigger problem is the differences in releases. Remember they attempted and succeed to deal with most of the problems like they did with Spiderman (maybe it was pirates of the Carribean) : Release the movie in the theaters across the world at the same time.
*note* they took good note on taking batteries of all electronic phones, cameras, and computers before letting them in in some theaters in China...
@Shippoyasha: mangafox is also getting the boot.
i think we can summarize it like this:
-XXXX awesome anime/manga almost NEVER gets translated right by foreign companies...
-...takes forever to appear on the shelves...
-...or never appears at all!
-and even if it does it's overpriced.
-...whereas fan/scanlations achieve all the above in record time.
those 2ch users forget that anime isn't something confined to Japan anymore. there's international demand, however small, that most foreign companies belittle and therefore pay less attention (and allocate less effort) to. it's unfair that they can get weekly shonen jump around the corner when foreign fans have to contend with the weak, expensive, 2orMore-volumes-behind tankobons without the goodies.
I for one will miss onemanga.
I highly doubt a lot of the anime I watch is gonna be licensed.
Oh well, I guess all the japs can just tell us to learn Japanese.
Well, through watching Anime for many years, I can watch it without subs now. I only need them when it's v complicated, like politcal and science stuff.
Also, self Japanese isn't really that hard :)
i wish i could learn it.
I wouldn't know about that anymore Alex. While the lesser known stuff may be put in backburner, there's more content than ever via streams. Anime News Network, Youtube, Hulu, Crunchyroll and Funimation all now stream the latest anime, subbed for free online. Sometimes even in high definition.
I was kinda amazed that there was Tatami Galaxy free to watch online. Even art-house stuff are easier to find online. Disc-wise, that's another story.
So, you could understand japanese...
Problem Solved...NO!!!
Where will you watch those Raw anime?
You download it, you're still pirating!!!
And mostly have crappy translation, no English subtitles with Japanese audio and are fucking censored, Come On! I wan't normal version the same as it is released in Japan not a modified version for specific country >,<
The problem with all this is that most of the anime/manga released in Japan doesn't ship overseas right away, in turn leaving people frustrated with long waiting periods or worse yet, not having it available at all. Publishers need to realize it a lot faster and expand, instead of complaining about piracy. This obviously wouldn't solve all piracy, but would definitely help a lot, while boosting sales by a considerable margin.
2ch needs to shut the fuck up and realize that while they have every anime/manga available to them, the rest of the world doesn't. Bitch at the publishers for being a bunch of segregated distributing retards.
I'd be more than happy to pay for quality translated manga in the digital format, or even paperback for some titles. I buy Vagabond and Berserk for example. It's not like it costs as much as anime. $10 per volume is not bad at all and digital distributing would cost even less. Hell, even anime is a lot cheaper here than in Japan (The complete 1st season of Melancholy is $45 here). They just need to hurry the fuck up and release a lot more titles a lot quicker than they do. Sure, many titles may not be as popular here as they are there, but they're bound to pick up at one point once the market expands a lot more. Not everything is an instant success.
I just saw a Kodansha re-release of 'Ghost in the Shell' and they still have removed the colored sequel of that hot yuri action at the beginning of one of the chapters.
So yeah~ America still sucks when you buy Manga
So your basing your 'american manga sucks' based off one series?
Most are arriving panel to panel with the japanese version.
Why not? America sucks when it comes to manga and anime censorships.
I just ordered Berserk vol 2 (in english, not my native language) and it cost me 11,95 euros and Berserk box set which was 6 dvds 20e. So I think I have good reason not to buy manga, also rarely is anime this cheap here. It's usually like 50 euros a box set and there isn't even properly released Cowboy bebop here. Good for them to judge non-japanese from their high horses, especially because they have been brainwashed by the authorities to believe piracy is the ultimate evil by having the strict piracy laws there.
could be worse... they could make more series like Cardcaptors or the modified version of Escaflowne.
Western audiences were deemed not ready for female main characters...
@Anon 15:33
This is not true lots of manga get censored or modified in subtle ways that sometimes detracts from the original.
Tenjou Tenge has many modifications to the fanservice shots, Full Metal Alchemist had bits changed because it might offend Christians. These are just to name a few but there are probably countless mangas that have been altered.
I heard that High School of The Dead has been picked up by Yen Press here's hoping they don't change the art or they'll be no point reading it.
HSOTD will get changed the fan service in it is extreme and the western conversion will fuck it up. most likely they will whine about it being to "sexual" for print.
R.I.P. OM
Yeah, so if you want to read a manga legally you have to wait an eternity at which point you may get either nothing at all, or a censored or otherwise butchered version. You can't trust the official sources to get the material out in the market and you can't trust that what you're reading is a fair representation of the original. Companies have too many ulterior motives.
Why not simply realise that scanlators are serving a public good and legalise their activities?
Public good my ass.
The reason why manga gets censored is because for the longest time the target market has been seen as teenagers and mostly teen and preteen girls at that. I frankly am not bothered by it, and most of the claims of censorship are largely overblown by people who can't enjoy anything without pulling out their JP copy (that they often can't read) or more often now their scanlation and going from frame to frame comparing thing just for the sake of having things to bitch about on the internet.
At the same time, the publishers that actually do more mature manga on a regular basis don't bother with the censorship.
Also, it's not like scanlators have never horribly butchered a translation before.
@Anonymous 11:06:
you're probably american. speaking for everywhere else, most religious (reading+watching) otaku i know are men. we have to rely heavily on the internet for our content because unlike over THERE our local dubbing is unintelligible and the anime channel not only recycles seiyuu (think hearing the same voices in ALL the anime airing on the channel - i've heard better fandubs) but mucks up the translations. manga is expensive here; if we had the money we'd gladly pay, but feeding ourselves IS supposed to be a priority, right?
as for manga, we have to put up with the titles that you jerks (not you, the publishers) handpick. i'm seeing Tsubasa Chronicle and Slam Dunk here when I want to be reading Kobato and Medaka Box. where can I find them? on the internet! and if ever they DO license Medaka Box half the important scenes will be chopped so that kids won't be 'offended' or 'influenced'. i want my manga content translated as is!
i'll bet you that most people would prefer the scanlations over the foreign released tankobons. put 'em side by side without telling readers the source.
about medaka box.
they probably wouldn't censor it.
JUMP will just do what they did with Pretty Face and I"s. slap that Mature sticker on it.
I've lived through a time where I had to wait more than a year for one season of an anime I liked to be released. For manga it was sometimes worse. Thus, now, I watch subs and read scanlated stuff. If 2ch is too dumb to do the same for stuff they want from here, too bad.
Mind you, I do buy stuff that I really like.
@ anon 16:59 Yeah great you can buy Toradora. If I want to buy it. I have to pay the 50$ for the volumes and 40$ shipment cost. Except I did have an Credit Card but in my country its difficult to have one. So what now. Wait till it will release here? I dont belive it will ever release here.
Even if it gets licensed our stupid ass companies will just give it shitty dubs and subs and butcher it.
I cannot buy anime from Japan w/o paying 100% of overtaxes, here on Brazil they overtax anything to 100% if it came from overseas!
you 1st World people never think of us 3rd World!!
Exactly. I watch it, and if I like it, I buy it if and when it's released in the U.S. I have already seen both seasons of Spice and Wolf, and I bought the first season shortly after it's release.
If it's good I'll buy it. It's the only way to support the shows you like and oppose the ones you don't.
You may do that, but a lot of other people don't
*sigh* I know. T_T
I'm more or less the same, however this doesn't cover for the anime or manga, or anything that you didn't care for in the first place. What, you're gonna pay for w/e that's licensed that you happened to already have seen prior to, yet didn't like? Is that where one's obligation ends?
lol, I'm not ashamed - quite honestly it IS freeloading and thieving - I much prefer to not fool myself. Or better yet, it's no different than me going to my neighbors and watching all of his movies. Anyone can spend their time buttering it up wasting the time and energy. I know, contradicting.
However they're no more innocent in this than the foreigners. We all want free stuff, and someone out there hands it out like candy, because they too enjoy free stuff.
"Don't take candy from a stranger"
*Our mothers would be ashamed
You also realize a majority of the anime and manga that is fansub/scanlated is never brought to the rest of the world. What are we supposed to do then?
Also, it doesn't make it right that people are consuming stuff over on this side of the pond for free, but also those publishers should understand that there is an untapped market over here just waiting for them to do same month releases with subs at good prices.
Judging from the sample of comments, it won't be piracy that kills the mediums, but over-pricing and that pride and stubborness that they have will take out their publishers.
That's not true, we get many of the anime, but manga may be less, but it's increasing, not decreasing.
The problem is they have TV for anime, unlike us, and they have access to the material immediately for manga, while we must wait for translations that often take quite a while in official channels. And I'm never sure why because fansubbers and scanslators can do it in a day it seems.
I'm sure much of it is the bureaucracy, but and I will buy anime I like, but still, the delay is the issue. Thankfully companies are realizing that and speeding up. They're on the right track.
Us watching fansubs and buying the ones we like is no different than watching prime time TV and getting DVDs of the shows we like there as well. The only difference really is the advertising budget. Hulu's got a bunch of anime as well, I'll happily watch on Hulu to help them get money from me watching as well.
"we get many of the anime" by Anonymous
Well... not In every country my friend, and not always the same quality as it is in Japan (almost 99% not the same or ill even say 100% not the same)
did they honestly forget that they get anime for free over there? and that not everyone who watches it buys it either?
The shows they are arguing about are aired for free on television.
So what you're saying is, if I liked the anime, buy it anyways. (Like the DVD straight from Japan) That makes sense if I really do want to support the series, but at the same time I still need the subtitles. So unless the DVD has that, I want those fansub groups to keep going.
If you like the show enough you should be able to remember every single line through out the series anyway. lol
That's not like, that's obsession. There are a lot of people who enjoy anime without being obsessed with it.
Buy the series you like, and if you want to watch them, you can watch the fansubs again.
It will probably be better than a licensed translation in any case.
But I'm poor and if there wasn't any fansubbers or scanlators I'd probably wouldn't waste money because I'm frugal and don't care enough to buy things non-essential to living.
you 1st World people never think of us 3rd World!!
wait, I already posted this. might as well post some more rant:
someone posted (they always post this sh--stuff, heh): "'yeah, I don't have a car, so I'm gonna steal it!' c'mon, who seriously thinks like that".
so you didn't EVER steal, wait no it's called BORROW your parents' car just 'cause they didn't buy your own yet. right.
btw, i'm stealing, wait no it's call borrowing, this internet account so i can post anonymously my 3rd Worldly beggar's opinion. and my opinion is "i steal what i like. if i didn't like it, why stealing it?"
oh wait, not stealing, it's BORROWING, yah, i'll return it ...somehow
People who buy it will always buy it while people who don't never will.
2ch are just being shit as they sometimes do. They speak like a typical bunch of hypocrites. To tell the truth, wasn't it anime's popularity in the west that helped to bolster their beloved industry in the first place?
to tell the truth, it wasnt. get your fact right before you open your mouth.
Some intelligent comments aside that is rubbish. Well, it's 2ch, what should we expect from there?
@ Schrobby
Indeed...Hypocrites really...
Instead of laughing at One Manga's death, they should be extending a helping hand...
I bet they DL as much of the mangas as the western world from One Manga...
why should they? when the 'western world' often critise their anime/games/managa getting them onto international spotlight forcing them to be ridiculed, censored or banned...
East...West...Let's all not laugh at each other's misery and stop with the blame game...
Nothing good comes out of it...
Prices are getting high, and some countries ban certain mangas...
Only through the internet can we even read some of them...
^This
As if 2chn has never browsed through 1 or 2 sites. Maybe in an urban place, with decent cables and tv programmes, most of 2chn can get what they want easily.
But Tokyo is not Japan. There's other cities that can't enjoy such media as they're on the outskirts or countryside. They rely on stuff like torrents and scans.
Try checking the peer list on your P2P program next time, and you'll see a few IPs with Japan's flag...
They can get manga for a very cheap price there.
The whole shonen jump costs around $5. (And that's like 500 pages of stuff)
The anime and manga industry is moved on money, if you can't give some to the creators, you are not helping with anything, PERIOD. Creators browse 2ch a lot, it's obvious that they don't like gaijin because most of us don't give any money to them while getting it for free (I blame the underages). We'll only have good stuff available when people drop this mentality of "everything for free" and decide to contribute by actually paying for stuff we like.
That's not hipocrisy, that's called having common sense. I won't say "stop the piracy", but i can't support it either.
Other than international moralfags,
THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY does not affect or give any considerable effect to the anime industry since they base it on the JAPANESE consumers.
If creators want to earn from the INTERNATIONAL community, they should seek out the translators and create some sort of site with fees on reading their releases.
KILL'EM useless middlemen who whips the creator's ass who gets spare change in return.
wow you ignorant liars. do you know how little money creators get in japan? and you ignorant little morons still want to steal from them? you should be ashamed.
How about this: those people who get the free stuff online, simply promise to themself -I will be motivated to become a better person, I will earn lots of money, I will in the future donate some to this mangaka later when I am able to-
“If you don’t release simultaneously with the Japanese release they will pirate them. They are that committed.”
See how "hardcore" we are 2ch?
You guys can walk into a store, and buy the newest merchandise or mangas.
Switch on the TV and watch the latest anime.
While we on the other hand have to rely on fellow fans to watch the latest shows, or read some mangas that may never see a release outside of japan.
Not to mention we spent thousands on shipping and import taxes, just to get the newest merchandise.
So before you guys start talking bs, try to imagine what it means to be in our shoes.
Exactly, I've already spent over $200 easily from shipping alone with sono hanabira. You need to pay for the item (obviously) then shipping which is fair, but if you use a proxy which is the only way to obtain a lot of things, you also pay for there service, plus shipping for a second time, it gets expensive very fast. I'll keep buying sono hanabira because I enjoy the series. However living is more of a priority for me than to make rich companies a little richer.
If people could afford to buy all this crap why wouldn't they? People act as if we have an unlimited supply of money we don't want other people to know about.
Fact is, I have bills for medication, surgery, psychiatrist. On top of the regular food, education, utilities, rent etc. You don't think I'd love anime to be included in my budget? I can only spend so much money on entertainment and the rest goes to things I need to survive.
And it's very easy to say if you can't afford it then don't consume, which might be true. But if I don't do anything to entertain myself, my depression gets worse. So I couldn't care less about how rich these people are getting, living is my priority. Until they make things cheaper, this is the way things are going to stay.
Not like it really matters, but i doubt that fuguriya is a rich company. Doujin creators are not well paid, except for the biggest ones like 07th expansion.
ITS BECAUSE BEING DUMB BIGOTS IS EASIER than looking for valid facts.
The rest of the world ain't gonna steal your precious manga/anime away from you. We just wanna get our fix just like everyone else.
@ 21:56 25/07/2010
Well it's not really our fault that animators get screwed out the ass, but if they don't refuse to work for higher pay, nothing will ever happen.
Problem is most people are very short sighted and only try and see the problems now which usually creates more problems and possibly worse ones later on. Government is a very good example of this.
How many of you can name a VN you'd want to pay $70 for? Thats an insane amount of money for what you're actually getting and the time it took to put it together.
To add to the price problem, apparently most japanese otaku don't even need to pay rent etc since they all leech off there parents.
Who are worse? People who pirate crap because they can't afford it, or people who are too lazy to step into the outside world and get a damn job? A lot of the world struggles to get a job, and they don't want to work at all.
It's like there all fucking children who refuse to grow up without mummy and daddy assistance.
They might have impressive anime collections and such, but at what price? To freeload there whole life and rely on someone else, pathetic.
Anon, I hate to point this out, but I think a lot of English anime fans are also living with their parent(s), lol
cant afford, dont buy or work. OR learn Japanese.
fact is
you dont pay you steal, "omg its too expensive so I steal them" wow how old are you? 2?
cry baby
Well, even 2ch is hated by the Japanese public for being too aggressive. My Japanese professor-instructor (he's 30) once said that "never go to 2ch as you are abusing yourself".
Haha! My teacher, Japanese, 37 said this to me, when some friends and I asked her about 2ch: "2ch!? Are you nuts!? Don't hang out with racists, xenophobes and idiots! You'll soil yourselves! They are the trash of Japanese society! Just a bunch of NEETs, hikikomori and cowards that would never tell you anything to your face. You might as well waste your time with Facebook drama. That won't get you a brain tumor at least."
So... If a lady who specializes in teaching her tongue to us foreigners, promoting her culture and taking her students to trips over her country has that to say about 2ch, well...
2ch is exactly like 4chan, they are both full of idiots. Only complete scum acts and carries on like they do.
However, you cannot deny their investigating abilities.
I somewhat agree with these 2 statements tho;
“Overseas manga is ridiculously expensive, so that’s probably behind One Manga’s popularity. However you look at it, ¥2,000 for a single volume is way too much.”
“If the prices drop they’ll just start using censorship as an excuse instead.”
The rest was pure bullcrap.
And to get rid of the thought, No anime isn't cheap here. Let alone, anime is almost not for sale here. Just like manga, that's why we troll these sites.
The thing I don't get is; /Those 2ch'rs are prob all trolls, but still/, why are they so freaking upset with some piracy, you are not gonna tell me that nobody pirates anything in Japan. It's not like they're all swimming in money..
Compared to the Japanese price anime is cheap here, that's because it's absolutely rediciously expensive in Japan itself.
The dollar price for a season is often the same as the price for just 2 episodes in Japan going by the prices I've been reading here on Sankaku Complex in some articles.
Well that's just comparing US and Japanese prices though, stuff arrives in an even lesser amount in the rest of the world.. and even later.. and over here, even more expensive. (and subbed rather than dubbed, but that's a plus ;) - although it obviously takes both less investments and time)
And yes, I was using the Euro, and Holland as a standard. These 2 combined make a deadly expensive combo. And it gets even more expensive because almost no store imports any, and the onces who do raise the prices to the max.
wow, and so you think its ok to steal? just shut up and admit you are wrong for once. YOU ARE THE CRIMINAL. just admit it god damn it.
"And yes, I was using the Euro, and Holland as a standard. These 2 combined make a deadly expensive combo."
Quoted for truth.
Another Dutch mangafan here - and as you say, the Netherlands already is a pretty expensive country as it is, and the low availability and import costs only make things worse.
Especially with manga, everything that gets exported to the West gets exported to the US first, and *if* it catches on in America, then it *might* get an official release in the bigger European countries, like France and Germany.
The smaller European countries, though, are not so lucky. Proper translation and localization is expensive, and if it looks like the local market is just not big enough, the companies won't even take the risk.
That's why only the very most popular stuff (like Dragonball, Bleach and Naruto) gets a proper release here - and even then, the stuff is often translated from the American English translations, not from the Japanese originals.
The only real legal alternative is English translations imported from the US, which are available in specialized stores, but are often ridiculously expensive because they had to be imported.
...and for people like me, who like a lot of obsecure titles that propably won't even get an official US release, there's really no feasable alternative to pirating and scanlations.
You can never expect but so much rationale from 2ch. They will hypocritically bitch about anything...
True that.
Not every manga and anime I like can be found legally in other countries except on internet.
And here I thought, mangaka considering manga scans as advertising? Many publishers had licensing a manga/anime title from reading/watching the subs. So when they don't have subs anymore as reference, would the number of anime/manga being licensed drop?
Japanese should realizes their heritage by now and show it to the world.
Here's the problem. Japanese people usually prefer self-isolation. This is how they can't get along with other people, hence subcultures are everywhere in Japan more than the USA.
Can't really blame them with all the crap happening in the world...
Religions blaming each other for past grievance, ignorant people following the media about being a proper human being...You know what I mean...
Hell, if some of my 'brought up really proper' friends see all the DFC and waki-exposing anime girl figures in my room, they'd leave me in a heart beat...
I wish in the future we could all learn to get along...Even if it's just in hentai, anime and manga...
Real "understanding people" are very rare. look what they did to Jesus.
And being a otaku elsewhere in the world is sort of a social stigma... Some morons think that anime fans are childish, immature, nerdy or geeky.
That pretty much sums up their IQ and EQ.
Azure, dude, I want to see your room.
Hey wait...
Why is everyone confusinng the shutting down of Onemanga with scanlations?
The publishers were not attacking individual scanlators. Anyone can still get scanlations, just not as easy as onemanga made it.
And I don't see how the shutting down of onemanga is an excuse not to buy manga. You buy manga because you are a fan and want to support the artist so he can continue to make what you love, not solely for the publishers.
Also, I don't believe in the excuse of "we can't get the manga we want here, only naruto, bleach, and other crap, that we don't want to buy." The reason for that is very simple- Outside Japan, niche titles that are beloved on the internet, fail!
Publishers, especially in developing countries, don't want to risk licensing too many niche titles because the manga market is small. It's easier for them to sell naruto and bleach, because they are popular and pretty mainstream globally.
However, when it comes to otaku titles, where are the otaku to support it? Probably at home, not caring, since they have already read it online.
In terms of giving support, "Narutards" have us- the so-called "otaku-elite"- pwned. They get rewarded with endless volumes of naruto, while we sit here in front of our monitors complaining why they won't give us the type of manga we want. :/
So in conclusion, supporting the local manga market will help it grow and that will bring in more titles.Just complaining on the internet is not enough. You must give in order to get.
I can promise 2 things:
1) I will, as long as possible, read the most recent releases of manga I like, and new manga I've never heard of online. Because THAT is where these things always come first.
2) I will BUY things I like. I've nerfed my own food budget before to buy books, games, anime, figures I like.
But seriously, The situation with scanlation probably won't ever change no matter what publishers do. And truthfully, if they press much further they'll end up hurting themselves more than anything else.
I don't think they would actually go after the the guys translating stuff manga in their dorms, if that's what you mean by "going further."
Globalization comes with English knowledge. Most Japanese don't have that.
Ever wondered why every Asian you meet is either Singaporean or Filipino?
Because the majority of the Japanese that make noise are ignorant fucktards? I, however, know several Japanese that speak at the very least three tongues with varying levels of fluency. I don't know a single person from Singapore and only one from the Filipines.
I would like to meet some. I have seen ladies from Singapore and the Filipines and man, are they pretty.
In any case, Japanese able to cope and take advantage of globalization are there, only they don't make as much noise as the morons in 2ch, the hikikomori killing their families, creepy otaku, etc. Everything depends on how you are exposed to the people of Japan.
Same as with the people of the US. Some say they are all ignorant, arrogant and moronic, but I know a good quantity of people that are as fine as we can get from humanity.
what does that have to do with anything you idiot? that makes it OK to steal other peoples stuff?
"scans as advertising" is pure horseshit. I mean, it would be one thing if there were a few pages or a chapter, but when you have the entire series out, translated, months before the official version with a following of people who believe that Naruto should say "fuck" a lot more to be "authentic" who will use any kind of rationalization necessary to feel self-righteous for "getting theirs," is kind of cannibalizing your sales. Granted a lot of those kids weren't going to buy it anyway, and someone may discover the series that didn't know about it, but overall the effect is going to be net-negative unless the scan people:
1.) Drop Licensed books. Not individual volumes, the whole thing. And don't use "It's not available in all markets!" as a cop-out. Yes, I know it sucks living in a country where you can't get anime or Manga legally without paying exorbitant fees, But that's just one of the inequalities in the world.
2.) Wait until a book has been in print a while before bothering to translate it. Companies aren't generally going to go after you if all your titles are 10-year-old Josei books that will probably never get released officially outside of Japan anyway.
3.)Don't promote an attitude of entitlement. Like it or not, we could live in a world where none of this wonderful crap exists. But we don't. Be thankful for small things and don't expect to have every manga ever made.
And if all those fail...
4.) develop a way of distributing the translation separate from the scans. Make a program that takes a bunch of images with alpha-channels and drops them on top of raw scans. Sure, it's basically the same thing but at least the translating groups can claim that you're supposed to buy the books and scan them in yourself, then apply their "translation patch" to it. You could also just do a text file with page and word bubble references. Much less convenient, might get a pass.
Anon, I may not agree with all your extreme ideas, but I do like the 4th about translating older series. Far too many old manga (and anime as well) are completely neglected while 2 dozen scanlating or fansubbing groups compete to pump out a whore translation of the most popular series of the day, they should agree to have some people working on older things too.
Oh and, I do not think we feel entitled, it is more like EXTREME WANT for story and fantasy I guess. It is like, we are so fixated on consuming what has been produced we lose sight of the possibility of it running out in the future if people are not motivated by profit to continue producing it.
And here I thought, mangaka considering manga scans as advertising...
WTF? they only get $100 a page for what they write. AND they have to pay their co-workers wages. so how they earn money from their manga. Licence, toys, anime etcetc
so get your head right
"Their anime is far cheaper than in Japan and they still won’t buy.”
I didn't know onemanga did anime! OH WAIT THEY DON'T and that guy's statment was irrelevant O-o
OMG! Otakus from a country put down otakus of other countries!
man by doing tht they only make themselves look like even more loser if there only country has otakus
OMG! Humans from a country put down humans from other countries!
New Concept is New :P
If you've learned anything of 2ch, it's that they often complain about foreigners in this way. It's pretty much par for the course.
it's more like they get enraged over everything.
like the Aya Hirano thing going on right now.
hardcore fans turned flamers all on 2ch.
I didn't know there was licenced, dubbed, spanish subbed Anime in Mexico.
I live in mexico and no we dont have subbed anime for sale, we import from usa mainly and then again the marked is really small, we do have manga here, and I try to support it (Negima).
We do? last time I saw, the only company dedicated to manga had a major crash after the economical crisis and almost all of their branches around the country shut down exept on fucking D.F. Worst part? they'r not event getting new material, they'r just selling all they have on stock
The only stores that sells anime related stuff has a really small manga collection, mainly inuyasha, one piece, naruto and ikkitousen...
The Anime DVDs they sell are all fansubs or fandubs, mainly sucky dubs, of Saint Seiya, Naruto, DeathNote, Dragonball and One Piece...
The figures and games are the only original, with variety and good quality thing they sell. The point is, if i want to see original manga or anime, there is no way for me to get one, if i could find a way to pay and get an original one i would. They talk about prices with are not so low as they think, and we get the series many months after them. Not that the original subs are any good either. Point me a store where i can BUY it ORIGINAL and i will, till then dont complain or blame us.
yeah all anime is out in the west , in like 10 or so years . Just get butt loads of patience and brace yourself for shitty dubbing .
It's sad, but they honestly seem to expect us to just accept that. If they had to wait a similarly long time for shitty dubs of their beloved "non-moe" K-ON they'd flip out. I try to never expect others to put up with bullshit I myself wouldn't put up with.
in japan we wait about a year to see a newest movie. except for the ones that are famous.
so fuck off
The thing is though, I get the feeling they would...
Accepting one's current standing in life seems to be a pert of Japanese culture from what I have seen; they do not seem very rebellious, nor does change seem to appeal to them...
Not all dubs are shitty. Of course that doesn't mean the Japanese audio track is any better some of the time.
Not to count the quality of some titles.
But meh, they're crying over our ability to find raws faster, translate and release before it's released in some regions of Japan... note that they release the raws, not foreigners.
I'm in South East Asia and I don't see ORIGINAL anime with subs. Then again... I don't see original anime without subs...
A few years back there was and it was a VHS of Street Fighter.
The fact is, anime DVDs ARE cheaper in the US. Imagine paying the same price for only one or two episodes, that's how expensive the discs are in Japan.
And if you want Blu-ray, double that.
I`m not sure where you are buying them Anon, but new anime is expensive here. It is only cheap when it has been out a while and you buy them in the discount bin. Usually because they overbuy and nobody is taking it so they liquidate.
amen to that, and i live in asia. lol,
The making a fortune off of donation and advertisements applies to "MANY OTHER SITES" like....
Yeah, it doesn't need to be said with all the referral links and ads does it...?
