Top 10 Spring 2010 Anime – Angel Beats Beaten

tachibana-himeko-by-matsuryu.jpg

Fans of Angel Beats have been aghast at a ranking of the best anime of spring 2010 which manages to completely omit the anime in favour of such classics as the latest Precure.

The survey, conducted by Japanese anime portal AnimeOne, is predictably headed by a certain non-moe anime:

1. K-ON!!

2. Durarara!!

3. Working!!

4. Heartcatch Precure!

5. Ookiku Furikabutte

6. Giant Killing

7. Katanagatari

8. B-Gata H-Kei

9. Yojouhan shinwa taikei

10. Kaichou ha Meido-sama!

Contrast to the recent Dengeki ranking.

The question on the lips of fans is of course “Whither Angel Beats?”

They do? It's one of the most refreshing anime I've seen in ages. Definitely merits its spot in the top 10.

Yeah Katanagatari is pretty good. What surprises me is Heartcatch Precure being there. I never watched it, but it gave the impression of a show for young girls or creepy old men.

I'm shocked that the Japanese otaku acknowledge the genius in the arthouse-anime-of-the-year in Yojouhan shinwa taikei, aka Tatami Galaxy.

It's free in Youtube. Can't afford to miss nor one has an excuse to.

Meh.. Probably a mix of young girls and men.. though really its show with a weekend morning timeslot alongside Sentai plus Kamen Rider aka Super Hero Time.

The reasons I could think of for those that voted for it are..

    1) Nana Mizuki fans
    2) DFC (lots 8D *drools*)
    3) animation director & character designer for ojamajo doremi(ok that's my personal reason)
    4) actual little girls who watch the show

oh hell, at least this seasons precure's story is pretty funny and OP/ED is catchy. For a magical girl anime, Precure fight scenes always had a little bit of shounen influence in them. Enjoy!

-just a passing through Precure Anon, (who'll forget about this post in 5min)

Heartcatch Precure most definitely is rock solid this season. Some of the best animation work right now is in Heartcatch Precure. Sounds crazy but it's true. IMO the best Precure show aside from the first Precure season.

True, I saw a gif of one of the girls (I dunno which one, her color was yellow though) transformation sequence, and it was surprisingly awesome.

While I love angel beats. Heartcatcher is really really good. This time, unlike Fresh, we actually have a reliable translator. So fans who don't speak JP can actually watch it. Except it might be calling that lying wombat ladholyman a translator is a bit of a stretch.

It was sorta lonely last season, when only us JP speakers were interested in Precure.

Japanese's mindset is K-ON is more moe than Angel Beats, thus diverting the main bulk of the audience to the former's show. So who are the main bulk of the audience? Retarded loser otakus

Btw, KyoAni needs to turn Himeko Tachibana into a main character.

They definitively should at least give her at least a couple of spotlight episodes.

Tis true, but to be this different in rating really makes you wonder who's statistics are more reliable, or even reliable at all.

At least they both agree that Working was a good anime...

Statistics aside, Working!! was indeed great....but Angel Beats was (imo) one of the best of the season, and certainly better than K-ON!! (mind you, I myself like K-ON!!).

Agreed. I like K-ON!! Nothing against it, but the story really lacks any punch (its another slice of life anime's with a bit less comedy and more Moe).

I think last season had some really good series.

I have a feeling AnimeOne be trolling as at least Angel Beats had a decent story; K-ON only has its "non-moe" blobness.

Indeed, the series really needed to be longer than it was. Each episode started and finished a new arc which is absolute rubbish...

Here's to hoping Kyoto decides to step in and remake it like they did with Kanon, cheers.

It couldn't be helped. In the end, they did pretty well with the story (especially with only 13 eps). I too, however, would love to see what they could do with say...26 eps..

I agree. The ending felt very rushed. Not much was told about how people decided that they had the desire to move on.

I think it should have been a 26 episode as well to really cover the story. And the whole episode 12 was rather iffy to me.

All you need to do to make a really successful anime is to call it "AAAAAAAAHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!"

    Comment by Anonymous

You might run into copyright problems with that name. There's an indie game called "AAaaaAAaAAaaAahhh!!!"

Although an anime about people base jumping could be fun.

Except Heartcatch Precure this season is VERY good. Very charming, nice and simple character-dilemma-of-the-day and the animation is jawdropping. All that, I can't really say for Angel Beats which just dropped the ball with its final few episodes. Also too many characters just coming and going with the way the story was created.
