“K-ON! is Not a Moe Anime!”

azunyan-yui-by-jinrock.jpg

According to an apparent majority of K-ON! fans on 2ch, K-ON! is most definitely not a moe anime.

The debate began with a seemingly innocent query as to the merits of K-ON!, but this soon resulted in a storm of angry denials when the questioner called the anime a “moe anime” in passing:

“I haven’t watched K-ON! at all, but everyone talks about it. Is it really just another moe anime, or is there something excellent about it?”

“It’s not a moe anime!”

“It’s not because it’s entertaining or excellent, it’s because it’s loved. Both the makers and viewers watch over the characters and setting with great affection.”

“Only part of it is moe!”

“You guys are being trolled hard.”

“Even if we are being trolled I get really annoyed when it’s called a moe anime. It’s not an easy thing to depict the cuteness of the characters!”

“It’s pretty embarrassing seeing all these guys going on about it not being a moe anime – I wish they’d just shut up…”

“It may be a moe anime, but it’s certainly not just any moe anime!”

“However you look at it, it isn’t a moe anime.”

“I hate moe anime but it has me hooked, so I don’t think it is one.”

“You’re just prejudiced against moe anime then…”

“There’s a real preconception that late night anime = moe anime…”

“There seem to be a hell of a lot of people about who don’t want to recognise it as a moe anime. From any commoner’s perspective it looks like a moe anime, doesn’t it? Why are people so desperate to deny it?”

“It’s because it’s not just moe, it’s a reason for living!”

“I never really thought of K-ON! as a moe anime. Always though Zero no Tsukaima and that sort of thing was what a moe anime was. I want to lick Azunyan.”

“Moe anime used to be a positive term, but at some point it ended up just meaning anime using catchy pictures to show panchira. That stuff’s rubbish.”

“So why did it become so popular? Its sales and viewership weren’t that impressive…”

“Because they know how to attract otaku buyers.”

K-ON! – moe anime or not?

It is definitely a moe anime. Zero no Tsukaima falls into the ecchi anime section.

It's definitely a Moe anime. The characters try to look as cute as possible at all times to distract from the c+ grade storyline.

Imagine all the characters weren't Moe, then ask yourself if the story is good.

    ok...yes...yes it's still good.

    mostly because it's ultimately a slice-of-life series
so if you were looking for any kind of deep over-story, the failing in that situation isn't K-on's lack of a storyline...

if they weren't in a moe style of art, than it would be azumanga like. i think it would lose allot because of that.

not because its a moe anime, but because the style allowed for a variety of expressive faces, without forcing "unrealistic faces" or sd characters.

art style may be moe, but the anime itself isn't.

A slice of life stories can be "deep" as well. Though the absence of 'depth" does not necessarily lessen how a show affects someone.

IT is still an anime (MOE OR NOT DAMMIT).
The fact that it is popular is still a fact.

I was always under the impression K-ON and Lucky Star (REMEMBER THAT SHOW?) spawned the MoeBlob term.
Cause, y'know. They're moe, and don't seem to have bones in their faces. cute blobs. Not a bad thing, by a long shot.
Though, blatant denial like this is depressing. Accepting it is the manly route.

K-ON has a pretty deep storyline if you think of it as a 1.5 hour anime film. Nothing brutal about that.

    @ Ghost Dog

Almost all good stories rely on good characters. You could pick just about any really good story (in your opinion), destroy all of its characters personality-wise, and then see what remains. K-ON! is no exception.

If you compare azunyan to any real life human she also looks quite odd, so why would the guitar have to be drawn realistically? ;)

    So...
"Both the makers and viewers watch over the characters and setting with great affection"

    and

“I never really thought of K-ON! as a moe anime. - I want to lick Azunyan.”

I find theese replies to clearly state that it's mostly about love for the characters. Which would lead to most people concluding with it being moe-anime. To get people to watch/buy it because of the characters that they love/care about.

It's not like dragon ball where you watch it only to see (say...) Goku again, because you've been missing him.

    No its clearly not Moe.

I mean the story has no relevance, and the only reason people watch is OMG THE CHARACTHERS ARE CUTTTTEEEEE, but it definetely isn't moe.

I mean if the girls wern't cute or doing cute things people wouldn't watch it, but that doesn't make it moe does it?

Just like "The Nile" isn't a river in egypt

Well said. We all who have played guitar, bass, drums, keyboards and more in a rock group see this totally differently than ppl not in music,
Musicians who are watching this see the K-On! story as a part of their own life.
I do, having been a musician for long, long time.
Well, cute girls going through their development as musicians add definitely a flavor to whole thing... is it moe?

When you see a cute kitten, would you rather pet its sexual organs than its head / pelt? You wouldn't, right?

Physiologically, whether you feel something is cute or hot, it has to be either one or the other at a single moment, because one's brains use the same substances in order to invoke these feelings. I'm guessing that from an evolutionary perspective, 'moe' was the emotion to be felt towards babies, so that one would rather protect and nurture them than bang them. It makes sense that wanting to do your own babies is a bad strategy for survival.

One can switch one's perspective between cute and hot if the object can be seen in both ways, like perhaps the girls in K-ON!. It can happen very quickly, with the mind going back and forth between the two emotions. In an attempt to answer your question, 'petting her pussy' would probably make the one doing it switch between the feelings of cute and hot, so effectively it might very well 'make her seem less moe'. I see no problem there.

Of course, if I made any mistakes here, feel free to correct them.

if you want to know if it's moe or not. just try to recount the entire story of one episode.

just to make it clear... in one episode all they did was talk and buy a turtle. if they weren't moe, that sounds like a script for a shoujo manga.
