Disgaea 4 Announced

Nippon Ichi has announced that Disgaea 4 is due to be released for the PS3 within the year.
A detailed announcement is expected in September at the Tokyo Game Show.
The move is not likely to come as much of a surprise to followers of Nippon Ichi’s increasingly troubled fortunes – it previously outlined new Disgaea plans as part of its efforts to avoid bankruptcy.
It may be no exaggeration to say the company’s future prospects hinge on producing a quality iteration of its signature title – another embarrassingly pathetic exercise in cash cow milking like Disgaea 3 and its PS1 era graphics and gameplay seems unlikely to rescue the company’s fortunes.

Some bigger, more detailed sprites would be very nice. If Blazblue can pull off beautiful sprites in HD, then so can Disgaea.

graphics aside, because i could enjoy these games regardless of graphics, i just dont feel like being fucked again.
almost all the dlc content was on the fucking disc. being a fairly big fan, i was willing to pay, not happy but willing. i don't feel like getting a game having 3-5 characters i like, and having to pay 60 more for all the other characters i like.

Disgaea 3 is one of my favorite games but shit, the amount of asshole dlc that was already on the disk should be criminal.
While i'll most likely be getting 4 again, it would really help if they actually TRIED with some graphical improvements, lets say, high res sprites.

What I would like to see, in the upcoming game, would be "3D" sprites in combat, as opposed to blocky sprites, but, still in the same chibi style. Basically it should just look like a cleaned up version of older games. I'd also like to see fully animated story scenes (year right). But would be happy to see story scenes similar to Trinity Universe, partially animated and good looking. ... However I'll probably buy it regardless, as I love the series...but they defiantly need to integrate the original main cast as part of the main story, not side quests an extra characters.

Disgaea does not have PS1 graphics. If it lags at times on the PS3 then you'd know there's a lot of processing happening.
I applaud NIS for making 2D games. C'mon 2D is better!
If there was a lot of processing happening to generate Disgaea 3's quality graphics, then the engine programmers weren't doing their jobs :)
Chances are they just didn't even try to use the Cell processor properly and had most of the game running on that one somewhat normal CPU in the thing.
Agreed with the 2D part though.
The state of programming in Japan has been just awful recently.
Their programmers don't know/follow most or any of the better practices for programming and developing. Subsequently, their games cost many times more than they should to make, and they're glitchy as hell.
Universities in Japan really need to step up and start training their programmers and graphic designers seriously (instead of just a 4 year vacation before getting a job).
Personally, I hope that they keep the PS1 era sprites. That is part of the charm of the Disgaea series.

How the hell do people continue to play this series? The first was all anyone needed for like 10 years then came the secnd, third & now fourth. Then again, I guess the main demographic likes to pretend they're working while leeching off parents, sad thing is it's basically volunteer work ie; NO FUCKING PAY

Wonder if N1 decided to go with high-res sprites this time. Although after playing Infinity Universe there's a little bit of hope that it will have animated characters for the talking cut scenes.

Just downloaded the visual novel they made for psp (wich is opbscenely short btw!) and they did a impressive job with highquality sprites for the mood swaps to give the illusion of a full animation.
The disgaea games have in no way PS1 era game play btw, anyone who makes such a ridiculous game has not bothered playing a turn based strategy game past the original shining force!
They will start heavily failing only around Disgaea XIII so there is still time.
Been waiting for this but considering their last few games I wouldn't be doubt it if its just Disgaea 3 with a new story.
