PS3 Uncrackable, Hacker Gives Up

ps3-player-pantsu-by-poporon.jpg

It seems it has been the PS3 which cracked the hacker, and not the hacker the PS3 – the major force behind cracking the PS3 has given up and retired in circumstances few could help but interpret as an abject admission of defeat at the hands of Sony engineers.

Obnoxious celebrity cracker Geohotz has “retired” from hacking rather than face the shame of defeat it would appear – far from delivering an update in his famed battle with the PS3 firmware, instead all he delivered was a terse notice of resignation and some bitter whining about people “taking this way too seriously”:

“It was a cool ride, and I’ve learned a lot about a lot. Perhaps one of these days I’ll do a more formal goodbye.”

With the PS3 still completely unhacked halfway through its lifespan, and any crack likely still years in the making, it seems any eventual hacking will be too late to make much difference – quite the coup for Sony.

The credibility of Geohotz was already at an all time low after he admitted distributed a fake picture suggesting he had hacked the iPhone 4, as he did so successfully to the former model – little wonder he felt the need to retire:

I didn’t fully realize most of the current scene don’t care unless they are getting something. Now I do. It’s late tonight, I’ll think about what to do about this in the morning.

The real reason behind no release isn’t technical. It’s just that it will never stop, after blackra1n, people demand unlock, after blacksn0w, people demand untethered. I miss the days when jailbreaking and unlocking were difficult, it attracted a much higher caliber crowd.

Also, to the haters, the picture is quite obviously fake.

Apparently he is far more obtuse than he is usually given credit for – it seems self-evident that the only reason his fans care about his antics is the opportunity for piracy it offers them.

Or else this is merely a crude attempt to deflect attention away from two abject failures in a row, coming on the heels of some typically egotistical hacker posing which led his followers to believe it was merely a matter of time before they were happily downloading “backup” Blu-ray ISOs for their freshly cracked PS3s…

Along with the "the 3DS is uncrackable" news, I believe our "matter of time" is horridly far from nigh.

..and before we know it, even our toasters are uncrackable. Holy sh--

I fully support him. Is there a reason to work if you dont get gratitude for your work? Those who bash crackers do nothing but use the results of their hard efforts. Like if he started doing it, it his responsibility to finish it. Well guess what, he doesnt owe anything to you.

Either you go and send him some $ in support, or go and crack it yourself, or just shut up. Otherwise, you're the reason he quitted.

Well, when I do fan translations, I'm really just doing them for myself, because I want to. If people want to follow along for the ride, that's cool, but if not, I really don't care. That said, were I to drop a project, like he's dropping his, the only person I'd be letting down is myself, and I don't know about anyone else, but I can't stand letting myself down.

He spoke about his previous cracks, like jailbreaking, where when he discovered something and posted about it others would look at his findings, and add their own observations and eventually they became able to figure out a way to crack it. Combining resources like this is usually done by those curious about the workings but results usually have the most use in the piracy scene. Seems there was not enough interest in actual cracking.
Look at how the original xbox was cracked (theres a pdf documenting how the entire security chain works) - it involved someone having access to university-caliber equipment to spy on bus communications. Combining resources of curious users at work.

Take what I say as coming from a biased source though - I went to HS with this guy and worked in the same lab as him. I had nowhere near the drive to cobble things together as him. Though I imagine he does this mostly for the challenge and learning how stuff works.

Well said and with how people were treating him because of something he didn't do I wasn't suprised he quit. I would have quit if I was in his place also.

Everyone who was constantly bashing him because of Sony's illegal actions in removing OtherOS were assholes.

As someone in the games industry watching it rapidly die into facebook and the shallow-as-can-be social B.S. sites, I'm extremely happy that they actually managed good protection on the PS3. Even if it is eventually cracked, it's still excellent that full sales are made on the games. Those who aren't intent to get the games won't get them, or in many cases, will wait until price drops for them to be more affordable, which is WHY that practice exists so that everyone can get access to a game for reasonable prices if they have enough patience. It also sees trickling income for developers and publishers over longer periods of time which does add up and is very necessary in proving longevity.

Either way, pirates from the younger generations and many from the older ones are spoiled, mindless, yammering children. At least those of us who remember the fansub honor system of 'if you download this, support it when it comes out in America' don't treat piracy so much as our right as it is a very lucky privilege of the times and technology. So many idiots use the word 'corporation' as some 'be an asshole' card when it comes to justifying taking money from hard-working people.

Actually, hes been asking for donations to "convince" himself to jailbreak the newest iPhone firmwares and the PS3. But so far, he's just kept asking for donations, giving off fake releases, and saying he cracked them, but not releasing the exploits.

He has been "inactive" since the first 3GS exploit and keeps saying a jailbreak will come soon, but only if the donations keep rolling in. He's only in it for the money.

    01:56 15/07/2010 # ! Neutral (0)

Maybe, but the PS3 has gone unhacked for years and there is no hack in sight. And even if it were to be hacked now, at this instant, it has deterred copiers for over three years already. The fact is, that this has been completely worth it for Sony.
And that is the big story. Not that some hacker with an ego announced some vapourware and wasn't able or willing to make good on his claims. The story is that all the people who, whenever a company announces a new anti-copying system, gleefully jeer that it's pointless, that there is no such thing as working anti-copying system, that physical access nullifies security, and that a crack will be out in months, are dead wrong.
Hack prevention can work, if implemented right, and the PS3 has proven this. I may despise Sony's tactics, but I take my hat off to the PS3's engineers' technical prowess. Chapeau.

If every hackers that makes an attempts just quits like this, it seems like a waste to me. Perhaps it's better to work in a team. I'm sure dev-team would've been happy to have him on board. You can then just step out whenever you like.
