Haruhi’s Blu-ray debut sees her entire 28-episode anime packaged into an 8 disc set, even going so far as to include English language subtitles.
The set, covering the entirety of the TV anime and a number of live events, represents something of a departure from Kadokawa’s less than exemplary marketing of the franchise.
International fans are also being allowed to show their devotion – the entire set is confirmed as being fully subtitled in English, still an unusual act of accommodation.
The set is due on the 22nd of October, with pre-orders having already opened, only to see the set sweep to the top place in Amazon.co.jp’s DVD rankings.
At around ¥30,000 for 8 discs and 28 episodes (650 minutes), along with a variety of live events (bringing the total to 1080 minutes), the set represents something of a bargain by the standards of Japanese anime pricing.
Fans looking for a copy, whether international or Japanese, can pre-order it now.

OMFFFFFFFFFFFFGGGG! THIS I seriously WANTTT!!
I'm Ok with this... I hope the old episodes aren't upscales IIRC they started 16:9 on Kanon. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
Next bring out the Disappearance bluray! I demand it now!
Roughly $340? BLARGHHH
For a japanese boxset this is dirt cheap.
not only that, but in the Blu-ray version, we can see that Kyon actually had 4 lolis stuffed into the bag.
Sorry Schrobby. With 340, you can get a ton of everything else. I wouldn't come out and say we should accept these prices when the Japanese anime DVD/Bluray industry is doing a major disservice to their fans this way. No need to accept the standard. I refuse to.
That's why I wrote "For a japanese boxset". ^_-
The prices for anime in Japan are outrageous.
Just in Japan? All over the world anime prices are outrageous.
Full riped version (isos) will be out very soon.
For a niche-market item, 13 episodes for $40-$50 in North America is not what I'd call "outrageous."
It's from 2006. So I guess it's not impossible that a HD master was created back then, but I doubt it. The old episodes are probably upscaled.
Uh. Do you even know what you're talking about? No company makes the RAW original versions of anything they make in the size they are published in. Everything is in the highest quality and then for publishing they compress that down to the size it's supposed to be presented at. That's why you can obtain Bluray movies on movies that were made in the 1980's.
Post-processing effects are usually the only things that are/can be made in the resolution the product is published in.
Movies are made for cinema and were usually shot in 35mm, today it's often a 2k digital camera.
So in case of movies you just need to go back to the 35mm master and use it to make a bluray. However if the material was produced for TV the producers would have no reason to create a HD master. Using a video camera rather than real film is a lot cheaper you know, and a no-brainer if you were making a TV movie.
That is why you can get a bluray of Star Trek Original Series because back then they still used real film for TV productions, but there is no bluray for Next Generation because that series was made for TV.
^ Same with anime. Older anime that was made on cels can be remastered into HD just like film can. However, anime made in the pre-HD digital era (roughly 1999-2005) are essentially "locked" in SD. Any Blu-Rays of shows from that era (and later shows that were still animated in SD) will be upscales.
8 discs....
eight > >
Will take forever to watch them.
I see what you did there.
Another endless looping?
Kyon-kun denwa...
If, I am not a masochist... should I buy this thing? endless eight already screw this title...
This isn't endless eight, it's endless Haruhi fun. Those who couldn't go through the trial of the endless eight don't deserve to have this. Fans ftw!
Yes, how DARE they give money to KyoAni if they aren't stupid enough to watch the same thing eight times just to see the slight differences!
i'd buy it
I'll probably wait for the US release >_> only because I thought the eng dub was competent enough to warrant watching. Then again I could expect to only see that happen in a few years for BD >_<
Call me cynical, but I fear that the inclusion of English subs probably means that any North American BD release would be dub-only.
There hasn't been a dub only anime release in years.
Kurokami BD release.
I'd buy it if they give me a endless discount
Well... no
I'd buy it but I think I'm gonna save up for Disappearance on Blu-ray.
As there are seven redundant episodes from endless eight, it's more like: 28 - 7 = 21 episodes for ¥30000, which comes down to ¥1428,57 (or around 16 USD for one fucking episode)
Yeah.. totally a bargain. For the japanese at least. Damn, for around $20 I can get full seasons of anime around here.
When you're paying $30 an episode, half the price is an awesome bargain. It's in Blu-ray even.
You can't get $20 for a whole season of anime on DVD let alone Blu-ray.
This also comes with all live events as a bonus.
yes you can, a anime as old as haruhi is easily around 20$ if its a 12 - 13 episode season, and because half the season 2 were repeats at best, you are paying 300$ for a season and a half, and getting bonus content you likely don't give a fuck about.
now lets talk about the japanese subbing in english there own anime. engrish that wouldn't be acceptable even 10 years ago anyone?
Full season, about $10, blueray; YES I CAN.

Shigurui kicks ass. (But blueray isn't really all that kick-ass..)
Haruhi S1, DVD, about $20

But this is from Funimation, localization companies.
Japanese anime straight from Japan has always been more expensive than it is in most other foreign countries.
I mean, look at SW. Funimation's full series set cost ~$80 IIRC. You'd wish you could at least half the series for it in Japan.
American/WW release will probably be ~$100-200 tops. Probably closer to the $100 side.
What's with the terrible picture on amazon? Also, why is commenting on the main page broken with my FireFox?

I will buy this just to see what their subs look like.
Their subtitles on the Kanon and Clannad blu-ray boxes were perfect. I'd imagine this will be the same.
I can only hope it's not 8 discs of the same shit over and over again.
Engrish subs to please all the Weaboos/Wapanese :) - but a good way to earn some extra money from overseas Weaboos
Eight discs lol
0/10
troll harder
Does the bloo-rei version have a different story than the DVD version? Does it have new characters and backgrounds? No? Then what's the point of buying it again? Just because they increased the resolution? Fuck that, it's the same damn show people (not saying the show is bad or anything).
so we have confirmation that this is a redo of haruhi in hd? or is this just fucking upscales?
268.11 €
I think I'll pass. Blu-rays are generally way too expensive, but it's nice to see Kyoani offer its fans something almost worth it's price instead of, I don't know, overpriced Haruhi tissues or overpriced DVDs with two practically identical episodes.
English Subtitles? On a Japanese BD anime box set, where you'll be lucky to even find Japanese subtitles?
I'm glad to see Kadokawa catering to foreign fans as well as their local market. More companies should follow this remarkably positive trait of theirs.
Yeah it's nice and all, but would you fork $340 dollars for this? Or you could wait for a possible US release for $60-$70 version (which might be a upscale, maybe I dunno)
Bandai Ent here in the U.S., I don't think they've started doing Blu-Rays for Bandai here, besides Funimation and Sentai Filmworks.
But honestly, I don't think Haruhi would do well here in the U.S. for a Blu-Ray version. It's like taking a big chance with most companies...
God commands me to place a preorder.
Must Obey.
Since this is a Limited Edition, do we get a figure or something?
waiting for a cheaper english (USA) version instead of paying a retard price from the Japanse Gold diggers !!!!
Mm... This is very tempting. Though I need to save up for the Ga-Rei Zero and perhaps CardCaptor Sakura Blu-Ray box sets first.
Blueray I like, but what the fuck is with 8 disks?
It's anime for christ's sake, 8 blueray disks? You do know how much data storage that is correct?
The point of blueray is it CAN store that much data that easily.
I'd rather pay the same price, get the whole fucking thing on ONE disk, and monopolize on the point of having a 25 gig capacity medium.
Anyone thinking Haruhi needs more than a 25 gig space, is a fucking idiot.
I'm amused that the cast of the show (at least intermittently) show more technical proficiency than those selling the thing.
Does anyone think Kyon would use multiple disks for a job that required one?
While 8 discs is fucking ridiculous, so is your suggestion of fitting 1080 minutes of "HD" content on one single-layer BD too.
You may not be aware that H.264 encoding has very strict limitations for Blu-ray spec compliance. Making things worse, the "professional" Blu-ray encoders used are often utter garbage.
Even then, the bitrate you are suggesting to compress the content with so that it fits on a SL BD is too low even for a high quality encode if good video quality is to be expected (about 2.32 Mbit/s, leaving only 640 Kbit/s for equally crappy surround audio).
Now see, I didn't know that.
And yeah, it certainly makes sense that Kyoani would favor a level of video quality bordering on absurd.
the fucking idiot is someone who think 25G quality is good enough for full season of Haruhi.
