The character creation isn't behind the curve. You're comparing it to single player offline games.
Artefact just has a huge bias against this game. He seems to also be biased toward western RPGs.
Lol wut, what does singleplayer vs multiplayer have to do with customization? If anything it's the opposite, games like everquest 2 and age of conan had better options than this years ago.
Objection on Age of Conan's, the character creation was rather crappy there. I've never played EQ2 so I wouldn't know. Of course, compared to a game like City of Heroes the customization is rather lax, but compare other recent MMOs and this is average or above average. Perhaps more importantly for some, the FFXIV models actually look better than any other MMO I can think of at the moment, and normally the more customizable the characters, the lower the quality of the graphics.
I'm not including single player games because they're another genre. If you want to include cross-genre comparisons, games like Smackdown vs Raw make all of the games mentioned in this post look pathetic with its customization options.
It has everything to do with it. Generating and loading hundreds of different character models in a persistent world MMO is alot harder to do than setting 1 customizable character in an offline world where everything else is constant.

Also, the limited customization is a given there just starting beta, there will be more options later.
Most mmos that have decent graphics have this option really, from everquest 2 that is 6 years old to age of conan. Games like warhammer and wow that had meh graphics are release but really this is a standard feature in mmos.
I too would rather see a loli beating stuff up as that's my favorite archetype ever. :3 I wonder what the breast size choice will say about the player.
