The 1:1 monster RX-78-2 Gundam formerly menacing Tokyo has been re-erected in Shizuoka with upgraded armament. Below the animatronic statue can be seen in detail, as ever striking a particularly impressive figure against the night sky.
Its move to Shizuoka sees it occupy a central spot just to the north of Shizuoka Station, with the installation set to last from now until the conclusion of the Shizuoka Hobby Fair at the end of March, 2011, leaving plenty of time for pilgrimages.
The upgraded beam sabre glows at night and shimmers in the sun during the day, making for an impressive sight – otherwise the display is substantially the same.

Wake up one morning.
It's.. it's..It's a gundam!!!
I know what you mean *-*
but the reaction should be O..O..OMG!! ITS DA GUNDAM!!11!1 *heart attack*
Beautifully constructed. Just beautiful...
Amuro will be very proud
I want to see an anime take place in Shizuoka now, to find out if Simmonsing has spread too far...
... you totally missed the reference.
light saber is kinda fail, but we can't blame on them cuz our technology is not advanced enough to make the real one.
Dude,if the arms law was nonexistent there, they would have already made one.
or is it @k?...
@Tomoya-san:
Not really.

This is a surgical tool made for civillian use. Think of what a military could have in the future, if not today.
You're retard
h
There's a gundam down here... surround and destroy it!!!
I estimate 5 maybe 10 more years till Gundams are fully functional like the animes
lol...
Probably not that quickly. We can get a smaller scale one to work, but not something of that size. But the beam saber and the rifle, maybe.
Where's our flying cars?!
"But the beam saber and the rifle, maybe."
Sure, just carry a nuclear reactor and 5GW worth of batteries around. You might get out one shot... but it probably won't be pink or green or a beam because a pulse is much more devastating.
Don't take anime seriously ffs.
Anon @ 05:52 09/07/2010
Did you mean Helicopters or Airplanes?
Silly anon, they already exist!
Er, that Gundam in all those pictures could probably lay siege to the Americas, as well as most of Europe. Japan just needs to find a substance strong enough to stand up to the joint movement. The only reason this RX-78-2 hasn't left it's place with just one pilot is because the joints would probably break on the first leg lift.
Come on, Japan! Make some Luna titanium already!
How about the fact that it couldn't possibly contain it's own power source with our current technology? You ignorant fuck.
eva is more plausible
@11:20
Are you sure it doesn't already have that installed?
@14:49 10/07/2010
i can't tell whether that's sarcasm or not, but if the power source would be in it, then it would be a generator, that needs constant maintenance and makes alot of noise. wouldnt it be easier to just get electicity from the local electricity company?
just a thought.
lol, so reminded of of an episode in gundam wing....or is that what you were aiming for?
<3
looks like el barto struck again on the last pic
LAST SHOOTING!!!
Epic over 1 million! Now that's something!
They have a bloody awesome Gundam and all we have is a giant, middle-aged rusting lady on a pedestal...
*salutes the Gundam*
Ours has fire~
But theirs has a Beam Saber...
America has a woman (3d/real)
Nihon has giant robot (2d/fantasy)
i would say they accurately depict the interests of the contries as a whole.
america is the porn capital of the world.
Nihon is the anime/manga capital of the world.
*salutes Liberty AND RX-78-2
You're right...
...
...
...
Now if only someone would draw RX-t8-2 and the Statue of Liberty having sex...
*crosses fingers and silently says a perverse prayer to the Rule34 gods and goddesses*
Be glad ... Belgium has a pissing kid
Russia has a 60 m tall Mother Victory. When I was a kid I always fantacised about her and Liberty making out.
@Azure
Always remember rule 35.
Always.
And if you're really desperate, it doesnt hurt to draw it yourself...
*cough*
Brazil has a demi-god from a 2000 years-old legend.
The legend actually says he is really God.
North Korea don't stand a chance if they try to attack Japan.
nor china.
NK is already can't stand a chance if they start a war. But they don't care to take as many of their enemies down with them like China used to said that they doesn't care to sacrifice 300 mil (half their pop at that time) people with US.
Hmm...
Moving robots with beam sabres versus a tiny country with only a crazy dictator and a few handfuls of nuclear weapons...
I'm sorry. My money is still being placed on the country with moving robots.
Kind of hard to beat that, ya know.
Sorry, this thing cannot move.
The moving robots are small robots who work in hospital.
I was referring to sometime in the (distant) future. But you get my point.
Sometime in the (distant) future. When they start having "moving" robots, Korea is gonna have moving nuclear weapons too :D
my money is on country who owns newtype.
... The only thing that would be more epic is the next logical step...
Actual Gundams that can move and be piloted.
and I will excitingly wait for my country to be invaded !!
*unconditional surrender* (as long as they let me touch it)
nah. it takes too many money to build. and they probably have to build a nuclear reactor inside like freedom
I heard somewhere that with today's technology it's possible to build a fully functional Gundam. The costs? Less than a modern NASA Space Shuttle.
Why nobody built one yet? Well, In real life a Gundam would be almost useless...
Our technology would only be sufficient for building one that can move around and do stuff, but not for one that would actually be effective in combat.
Just what kind of usefulness such a weapon would have in real life battlefields can only be guessed at. People say it'd be useless no matter how advanced the technology, and that this technology could be used to build more effective "conventional" machines (say, high-mobility tanks or some high-maneuver/VTOL aircraft). But they used to say this about tanks and aircrafts too back in the day...
in fact... something similar to "arms" could be useful in a tank-like vehicle... if you can change weapons at base (let's say... exchange missle launchers for machineguns when facing regular foot soldiers... and arms can aim more freely) it makes a prety versatile weapon
All you need is a good, portable, very efficient power source. Then just versatility to the suit and you could be looking at a fully functional Knightmare Frame ...
If there's one thing an army of actual gundams would be useful for, it would be intimidation, at the least.
When facing an army of huge robots (about 30 or so will do just fine) with beam sabres, most countries would quickly turn tail and run.
Their dependability in combat?
Well, that would depend on just how well equipped they are.
For example --
An enemy's first reaction, after all, would be to try to blow up aforementioned giant robots with craploads of rocket launchers and other types of explosives. As such, the obvious countermeasure to that would be to give the robots anti-missile systems and heavy fortifications to be able to withstand the blasts.
If you ask me, I'd say some gundams would be damn useful in a war. But, like i said, that would depend entirely on how well equipped they are.
Maybe I'm just too optimistic, though.
after you said that.. Gundam must learn one or two thing from metal gear.
The human body and things (such as giant robots) aren't the most effective form to move or carry arms into combat.
So that's a good reason why chances of a giant robot making it to the battlefield at any time in the future are pretty small.. human sized robots (androids) capable of using the same tools as we use ourselves however.. I could see that work.
Japan would be one step closer to WORLD DOMINATION!!
