Top 10 Manga You’d Have Your Son Reading

boa-hancock-by-nekomamire.jpg

Japanese women in their twenties asked what shonen manga they would like to see their prospective sons reading yield up a list with several interesting surprises.

The ranking:

1. Slam Dunk

2. One Piece

3. Doraemon

4. Dragonball

5. Black Jack

6. Touch

7. Fist of the North Star

8. Captain Tsubasa

9. [tie] Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure

10. [tie] Kochikame

The choice of Fist of the North Star is a rather interesting one, particularly with females being questioned, as is the complete absence of titles such as Full Metal Alchemist and Naruto…

Arte, it'd have been SO AWESOME if you'd have put up the sexiest (or just most typically parent-unfriendly) pic you could find for everything on the list. LOL, even Doraemon (i mean, especially! lol!)

Sounds like a lot of cool women. I don't know if you noticed. I was honestly worried about seeing a lot of great series like yu yu hakusho or ruruoni kenshin on the list, but for the wrong reason(bishounen). Thankfully, it seems like all women they asked want to instill strength of character and a value in skills in their kids.

Hokuto no Ken Rei Gaiden - Manga for MAN!

geez most of them are MANLY manga, only problem is that most girls want their boy friends to be like pretty boys..., some if not all parents did poor parenting.

maybe all the parents should give their daughters the same list of manga as well, instead of shoujo manga.

Those Fujoshi want pretty boys to perform BL and Yaoi stufs ... for petting purpose - not for bringing up!

However, Mom would like to see her sons to be the Real man - so the Manly manga (not necessary Hot Blodded) are the right choices for those moms and their sons!

Doraemon, Captain Tsubasa, and Dragonball are must. Dragon Quest is not too bad. Stay away from BL genre though.

So Japanese women want their sons to be bland, generic and full of homoerotic overtones?

    Why am I not surprised?

As expected of Japanese women, they have good taste. Nothing like hot-blooded mangas such as Hokuto no Ken/Fist of the North Star to get these boys' bloods boiling.

Yes, Slam Dunk is a good start. Glad Naruto or bleach isn't in this rank, you don't want your son to rage overthe stalling long winded chapters.

I wouldn't have my son read any of these, not because I dislike them in particular, but because I wouldn't want my son to get into something just because I told him to. If he ever gets into reading any of these, it'd be because he chose to.

Also, if he would ever want to read Higurashi or the likes not suitable for minors I wouldn't forbid it, but I would need to make sure to provide correct guidance so he always has a clear grasp of the line between fiction and reality. Well, that would be the ideal but I'm not sure if I would have the energy to do it after 12 hour shifts at the company... ah Japan.

I'd let my kids read/watch whatever the hell they want, just as long as I know about it and I'm able to talk to them about it and they come to me with any questions they have. I'd be their friends and tell them what I know, even share their interest. I wouldnt force anything on to my kid, though. If they have an interest, I say they should check it out, even at any age. That means from stuff from Doraemon to Dragon Ball to Ikkitousen to Gantz (hopefully not the last one at a younger age, I'd really have to explain that last one before they touch it, hopefully that'll keep them away, or maybe they'd just be too curious to stop, lol... well I doubt Gantz would be too likely to come up. If it did, I'd just tell them that I don't like it personally and that it makes me sick and explain why).

People that say they need to keep their kids ignorant and "innocent" for as long as possible are some of the most cynical and sad parents ever. It's like they're saying "ooops, why does fucking lead to the possibility of children?! oh well, I'll do my duty and keep them from learning for as long as possible what a shithole the world really is, that should be easy enough!"

The series is superb, but it has potential to turn your son into a philosopher, thus he will be wise enough to defy every single thing you say.

FMA is too deep and kinda abstract for a shounen, anyway. Arakawa should make it a seinen to begin with.

Reflects more on their ages than anything. People who grew up in the 90s would tend to gravitate to the popular shows back then such as Slam Dunk, Captain Tsubasa, Dragonball, Kochikame, and Black Jack.

I'm surprised they left out Sailor Moon though. XD

isn't that because Sailor Moon is a Shoujo manga not Shonen.

Fist of the North Star is awesome. It's about manliness, manly feelings, manly emotions and manly tears. There's friendship, there's love, there's pride, there's ambitions, there's everything a man has to know about, except for sex.
But that can wait for when their sons grow up...

i think you're underestimating Slam Dunk's popularity in japan.

It's in the top 5 most sold manga, over one hundred million sold, but i can't remember exactly what place it was in.
