Initial DVD and Blu-ray sales for Angel Beats place the anime on par with the likes of Haruhi and K-ON!
Total first week sales reportedly hit 34,360, 23,000 of which were the Blu-ray version.
Whilst not quite an unqualified blockbuster, these sales are extremely healthy, falling short of late night anime hits like K-ON! (which for a time it managed to beat in terms of TV ratings) and Bakemonogatari, but managing to see off the likes of Haruhi, not that this is much of a consolation.

This is a sad day for mankind.
And if we compare Girls DeMo with HTT, Girls DeMo band done better than HTT in term of musics. HTT does provide good musics, but most of them suck. Right now, no HTT musics can be compare to Girls DeMo's 'My Song'.
Being Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu fan, I have to admit that Angel Beats! totally beat haruhi and k-on.
It's like Angel Beats!>>>>>K-On!!.
woah!! no way.. dont bow down!!
lol XD still i need to watch both this show to decide fot the winner :)
They're all overrated. I'll stick to K-ON! because its funny and Bakemonogatari because it has a plot.
Angel beats on par with the likes of Haruhi and K-ON!
*reads on*
falling short of late night hits like k-on.
So not selling as much as K-ON! Means it's on level with k-on??
bow to the master :)
Darn, no drive-by guitar-beating...lol
HERP DERP MY FAKE STUDIO BAND CAN BEAT YOUR FAKE STUDIO BAND
Thats good to hear.
Such a sad anime.
Why must people compare, praise and insult?
For me, I say I enjoyed Angel Beats, K-On, Bakemonogatari and Haruhi for what they were and I had a great time watching all of them.
Shouldn't we enjoy Anime instead of constantly bashing this and hating that?
It is called personal opinion and everybody is entitled to it. Voicing it would most definitely result in debates / arguments.
It'd be better if people are only voicing their opinion but not insulting the other ones.
Otherwise, what you'll get isn't debating/arguing, but the whole flame war.
Yes, except that many people here believe that their personal opinion is fact and that everyone else is wrong. When these people try to shove their opinions down everyone's throat it doesn't lead to debates or arguments, it just leads to pointless flame wars.
Basic fundamentals in Internet discussion of Personal Preferences is....
My Taste GOD TIER, Your Taste SH*T TIER.
That rule is painted in blood and my God those kids stick to that rule like they were raised to become a Nazi leader.
Of course voicing out opinions is good.
Though in internet there is no holds barred in words though doing it outside may cause you to loose a tooth or two or give you a blueberry eye.
There's a difference between RAGE and HATE. Nothing wrong in venting out anger. But there's always the agenda to stir sh*t. Repeating to do the latter is something else.
Completely true. As long as you have an opinion, someone else is going to have a different one.
@Actar: I for one personally enjoy AB Bakemonogatari (<3) and Haruhi what "it is." But at the same time I bash and insult Haruhi and k-on for what "it has done".
We just need to generalize more. Finally we will come to an agreement with most sane people.
1) I like a certain anime
2) I like anime
3) I like some pointless shows for entertainment.
4) I like being entertained.
Anyone disagrees with 4?
How about
5) I like being able to enjoy entertainment
6) I like being able to enjoy life
Generalization is a powerful tool of unification.
To let potential viewers decide if they should watch the series. I should have waited for reviews before jumping into the bandwagon of watching this crap from episode 1 itself. >.< I won't have watched it at all if I read the reviews first.
To let potential viewers decide if they should watch the series. I regretted jumping into the bandwagon of Angel Beats! hype when it first came out. >.< What a piece of shit.
I should have waited for the review! D:<
As much as I don't want to compare Angel Beats to K-ON!, here's my way of comparison:
Girls Dead Monster owns Hokago Tea Time and then they turn them into their personal sex slaves. Each GDM member has a HTT member as her personal sex toy. Also, each slave has a leash with a nametag of her owner.
Yui = Yui
Irie = Ritsu
Iwasawa = Mio
Hisako = Mugi
Sekine = Azusa
Although I'm a K-on! fan and I don't know much about Angel Beats, I have to admit I lol'd.
I would have disagree with the pic.. but then again, it's Yui-nyan.. so, OKAY :3
Still, I have to say I now hate Angel Beats for ending the series w/o even giving enough screentime to Yusa-chan.
I smell OVA coming
And I smell shit coming
Yep, you just pooped in your pants. :P
There is an extra episode in the last volume.
That better covers Yusa-chan, the other GirlDeMo girls, TK or at least Shiina or else..., oh yes there will be blood..
I'd wait for sales numbers from K-ON!! and Disappearance before declaring Angel Beats a success in comparison.
Sales numbers only gauges how many fanboys or fangirls a particular anime has or how crazy the fans can be.
Although storyline is one of the criteria to judge how successful an anime is, there are also other factors such as characters (which can be more influential) and whatnot affecting the number of diehard followers the anime will get.
Hence, a fan could be buying multiple copies of a single anime just because they like Akiyama Mio / Tachibana Kanade / Nagato Yuki.
You bring up a good point. It's very true that sales numbers shouldn't be the only way to gauge a show's popularity. But DVD/Blu-ray numbers are the more reliable indicators as far as sales numbers go, mostly because of their price. Although otaku have a lot of disposable income, they're not all rich. Dropping 1200 yen each on 10 character cd's is completely different than shelling out 70,00 yen each on 10 Blu-rays. This helps to ensure that crazed fanboy sales number padding is kept to a minimum for DVD's.
When determining how popular a show is you have to look at a lot of things. For example;
Merchandising: They're only gonna make ridiculous crap like K-ON!! board shorts and Hawaiian shirts as long as people keep buying them. (Yes they exist)
Fanart: If a series touched a fan so much that they're willing to spend up to hours drawing stuff about it, you know you're doing something right.
And most of all, discussion: The more people are talking about your show, the more visibility it has and the more popular it becomes.
I guess I'm just saying that I'm surprised how disproportionate AB!'s numbers are relative to it's buzz. I guess hype doesn't necessarily translate into sales success.
BTW, I'm only talking about how popular the show is, not whether it's good or not which is when characters and storyline would be taken into account. Whether a show is good or not is a matter of taste, and arguing about matters of taste over the internet is absolutely pointless imo.
I tend to agree. You'd think with the amount of buzz AB! has been generating it would easily sell at least 50k, if not Bakemonogatari levels (70k+). Yet it couldn't even beat K-ON! S1, which outsold it by about 10k in Blu-ray.
K-ON!!'s first Blu-ray should stomp this due to it's second season status and the fact that it's gonna have high visibility for a while with it's two cours.
Disappearance's sales will also demolish these numbers, but that's a given considering it's an anime movie, which almost always outsell TV series. Just look at Rebuild's numbers.
Actually I---
....
....
Nevermind. You guys said some of the things I wanted to say.
I totally wish Disappearance could do half of EVA 2.22's sales. Totally deserves it. I watched EVA to get some awesome action and that's what I got.
Meanwhile I didn't know what to expect about Disappearance. Back then I didn't get why it was so demanded during S2.
When I saw the camrip floating around.. I didn't want to watch it since I thought I might end up hating on it. I guess I was proven wrong. Even the camrip just blew me away. Well I can't blame KyoAni for milking the living hell out of it since this has got to be the BEST they've done so far.
Though the unknown date of when it will come out is downright unbearable when brought up.
I don't understand this site. Once I read how crappy Angel Beats' quality is and than I read it owns everything.
Well K-on is my current favorite besides the ongoing EVA rebuild series so I guess I'll give a chance to Angel Beats to prove its kickassness!
I hope its really dat good :3
then you should watch Angel Beats and you'll get what's going on here.
The quality they refer to is mainly in the art, where there are things that are different or where things physically dont make sense. It really has no impact over the plot and execution of angel beats.
What you heard before was some skeptical bullshit trying to put down a great show. The series is definietly worth the time to watch.
Don't listen to anyone's opinion on this site. If AB was longer than one season, then maybe it would have been a lot better, but things just get rushed. Just watch it and make your own judgment.
But we are waiting for the final stage: "Angel beats K-ON" + some guro pic :)
PS: a thought 2ch-aners can do a better photoshop
All Hail Angel!
At least Angel Beats showed us how cute a Haruhi-like tsundere can be near the end of the show. I still harbour urges to bitch-slap the egocentric Haruhi and Endless Eight made it worse for me..
Haruhi isn't a tsundere?
Theres a picture of Yurippe cosplaying as Haruhi on chan.sankakucomplex. Its so hot with all the guns, and because of that picture, you can't tell the difference between the two anymore.
Theory 1: Yurippe is Haruhi dead. She died when she fell head first into a vat of purple paint.
Theory 2: Haruhi is Yurippe alive. This explains her push to be different from other people quite well. Its possible because I remember a quote from Yurippe when she said that she wanted to do her own thing away from the other people.
Other interesting thing: Naoto from Persona 4 has a character look-a-like in Angel Beats!. The character known as Naoi. Yukiko's headband also appears on Yurippe's head, only different in colour. Shadows appear in the show too.
How about Yuri is everything Haruhi was supposed to be, like epic, leadership, courage and brains where as haruhi has um...what does she have again?
Haruhi is being hated on?
I must be in some sort of alternate reality.
At least Angel Beats has music in it.
shitty music.
shitty man is shit.
K-on!! episode 07, 10, and 11 dropped by to say hello..
> Implying that K-On! has no music whatsoever.
In This Comment section, K-ON! haters. K-ON! haters everywhere.
Fully agree with your statement.
I didn't hate S1, But S2 ruined it for me.
I've had a discussion about S2 with some ppl b4, that K-on is a .... manga, and those don't follow a story line. Well fuck, I don't even care. S1 did have a bit of story, and that made it watchable.
Not even talking about the Op single from S2, ugh~.
I personally do not hate K-On!.
I only hated K-On!!, no real story is going in the season, really. LOL
K-on should change name to moe-on or something.
Fully agree with your statement.
Sad to say, even the two songs performed by the ad hoc ENOZ in Haruhi's cultural festival episode beats all of K-ON!'s songs.
That's about the only good thing about AB. Personally, the ending theme to Bake beats everything I've heard out of all the above mentioned series.
