iPhone Signal Loss Defect “Users’ Fault”

The launch of Apple’s much anticipated iPhone 4 is fast turning into a debacle, with users discovering all manner of unwanted extra features, not least of which is the fact that the phone loses signal if held incorrectly, a problem which Apple blames on users…
The problem apparently stems from Apple’s decision to incorporate the unit’s antenna into the metal sides of the device, which results in signal problems if held in certain ways – proud iPhone users show off just how easy it is to activate the feature below:
(the signal strength icon is in the top left)
Workarounds include “not holding the phone that way” or buying a rubber cover, which Apple coincidently happens to sell for a mere $30.
Apple’s saintly boss Steve Jobs brushes off the issue completely:
“Non issue. Just avoid holding it in that way.”
Apple’s PR machine is contemptuous of the fools who mishandle its product:
“Gripping any phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas. This is a fact of life for every wireless phone.”
Except any non-iPhone 4, it would seem.
Other even less fortunate users have been reporting yellow splodges on their screens:

I don't get what this big comotion is about.
It has always been Apple way or the highway with everything you do on a Apple product.
so if Steve "The God" Jobs says you are holding it wrong, then you are definitiely holding it worng.
Follow the great ones advice and hold it properly.
Or If looking for the freedom to hold any way look else where.
I'm glad that I am never planning on buying an IPhone 4 (or any other) since that would make it unusable for me because that is the way I hold my phone.
Why do people act like it's newsworthy when a new Apple product comes out and it sucks? It's just business as usual.
http://imgur.com/4K8CK.gif
This is indeed a non-issue. Try not holding the phone like it's a fucking brick you're throwing at someone.
Apple has some fuckhuge issues, but this seriously isn't one.
Everyone is being a little pissy about it, but more than anything else, users want something that should work properly in all normal conditions.
And I think twisting your hand to show your pals this "OMG hilarious" youtube video would fall under that category. or perhaps playing games with net based achievements or game features that also involve tilting or twisting the phone.
Not to mention we have multitasking, which for me means I'm gonna have trouble running my internet radio while playing games. You tell me how I'm gonna listen to The Edge while playing Scoops, tilting my iPhone everywhere?
Not a major issue, but certainly annoying.
I hadn't thought of its use with apps that would involve finger placements there.
That does seem like a bigger problem once looking at it with those in the picture.
Maybe in future, Apple'll say the iPhone's not meant for holding.
no flash?no web!
i never buy this crap
save your money
think different
On an unrelated note, my tv has a purple blotch covering the bottom 1/4 of the screen, anyone know what could be causing that?
Assuming its LCD or plasma one of the driver chips is fried. The green one specifically.
Dammit, use tissue next time, TV's aren't meant to handle fluids, and that's what happens! D:
Apple is all about brand. They sure introduced awesome changes in the mobile market but that's all.
The yellow spots are glue used for manufacturing, it will supposedly go away with time and many reports indicate this to be the case so don't worry.
Because of the high demand and to meet the date the manufacturer shipped them shortly after finishing them so the glue was still fresh and became visible.
The antenna issue is supposedly being worked through with a new software update that will try to fix the issue by redirecting the signal and alternating it.
Needless to say, this should be a lesson for apple. Rushing a release is bad. Quality must always come first otherwise you make a fool of yourself.
Just buy a black berry/crack berry. They're cheaper and made to be used by people who put quality over style..
Look just get the incredible. Better phone!
is it also the users fault that it is inferior to droids.
I am really glad I decided to wait. I almost got swept up in the hype preceding the release, too.
See ya in 6 months, Apple!
Apple cares naught for the well being of its consumers. Even M$ would fix their RRoD outside of warranty. If your IPOD breaks inside of warranty and you take it to the apple store and your watermark has deteriorated they won't fix it. Watermarks are only supposed to disappear if it is dropped in water but if you ipod has been exposed to small amounts of humidity and moisture it will have the same effect.
apple rage.
The Steve Jobs nuthuggers and iFags will no doubt larp it all up and declare Steve Jobs to have set a new precedent for proper ways to hold a phone.
yellow splotches .... just a little pee pee gift from those underpaid workers in china, lol
"Raaarrrggghhh!!!" Me have simple "Fix" to "Problem."
Don't buy it.
Don't buy it.
Don't buy it.

Why buy something that thinks it's "Cutting Edge" when since so many 'pretend intellectuals' at the coffeeshop have the same d-mn thing? Why beg to sign a faustian contract and combined with the phone pay enough for a deluxe sex tour or several decent PCs. Really, doesn't the "Full" package of services that you set yourself up for "Major Hidden Charges" not to buy come to in the range of $200 a month...?
Any users here? Really, how much a month does it cost? Any hidden charges? How reliable is your phone? (previous models, this model)
There are plenty of "Pay as you go" cell phones, even in the USA now, including web browsing and other neat features.
Vote with your dollars.
Do NOT buy these rip-offs from arrogant snots.
Make it clear: "No more Contracts. If you make phones in Asian sweat shops, charge cheaply for them also. Your business model should be an affordable reliable service so people stay with or without a contract."
And, frankly, their "Asian Sweat Shops" are now their major competition. Now that they've made these "Tablets" and "Smart Phones" the technology has been given to people with the capability to make them. If the companies cheat a worker in the USA out of a good job, and the USA out of taxes in the form of the worker's taxable salary, costs and laws in the USA, why not cheat the CEO out of the fruits of "His" labor? The engineers who built the thing probably got "Daily Wages" if they themselves weren't "Outsourced" to save even more $. And with what these guys charge, for the phones and for the contracts, they could make a killing and sell at 1/5th their prices.
Im on AT&T. I kept my unlimited data plan when I upgraded to iPhone 4. I am paying $60 a month for basic contract, 30 for data, and another $5 for text (What a rip-off). With taxes it brings it to $100 a month.
I have been thinking about dropping to the 200mb a month data though. In the entire life of my iphones I have only downloaded 4.8GB and probably most of that was through wi-fi. It would save $15 a month.
Fot those who say just get a laptop, camera, blah, blah, blah....
Why carry more devices than need be? To do what this does I would need to carry a camera, mp3 player, netbook, gps, and a phone.
As for the "locked system" crap. Dont really care. I have had all my iphones jailbroken and there is nothing in there I couldnt live without. And its just a matter of time before the new one is jailbroken as well.
Apple = Microsoft, it just behaves differently that's all. I don't ever recall microsoft making a product though then saying it's the user's fault for not using it right..
actually before the RRoD was a confirmed issue it was the user's fault for not giving the console enough ventilation...those were dark days.
Bullshit that this is the 'user's fault'. That is the way that you hold a goddamned cellular phone when you are using it..... this is DESIGN DEFECT, plain and simple.
Jobs, I am losing more and more respect for you and your company every single day because of crap like this.
Apple: "It's your fault for buying our crappy products so stop complaining!!!"
[holds his $20 Tracfone upside down, makes phone call]
HA HA SCREW YOU STEVE JOBS
People who are into apple products are usually the sort of people who enjoy abusive relationship. They know they're getting fucked in the ass, but are too stuck up to admit it.
2023 iDiot
for once they dictate you on how you code your apps
now they dictate you on how you hold your phone.
what will they dictate next?
It's actually gonna get fixed via software:

meh apple products were not that good in the first place. still could not believe i can copy my music from my ipod i need to have a third party program to do it. may i ask does anyone know any mp3's that support flac? cause im looking on the web and it's hard to find it any suggestions?
no porn in apple product
but they will produce iFuuck
the will !
fuck apple...
maybe it's time to rename it to iFail? XD
I'm glad I own a few (3) Motorola Razr phones, now they're a solid set of phones, all the electronics sit nicely in the lower half of the phone and everything is modular (fits together like puzzle), the antenna is a 24k gold plated hunk of copper and is HUGE! I know this because I took apart my first one when it got too old and damaged and now its dissected and framed on my wall.
Full bars even out in the country, battery lasts for at least a month and a half. (I'm a light talker, mostly text and mobile wireless internet for my laptop)
A seriously solid phone, easy to repair, take care of and send all kinds of files and stuff even in an MMS! (but it requires knowledge of the receiver on how to extract files from an MMS and put it on a PC but allows sending of materials not safe for internet *winkwink*.)
Its capable of playstation 1 quality 3D java games (depends on game publisher) and has a really good midi table too, and MP3 tones/player.
Fast internet, Excellent build, Excellent Coverage, Excellent Everything and Cheap, Plentiful, and backed by over 80 years of tested and true business practice.
Would you trust the newest shiny iThing? or would you rather have a solid phone by a brand that survived the depression and is still one of the #1 brands of phone?
i'm not gonna hold it on my hand for 24-7 even in the wrong way. most of the time, my phone is in my pocket, so i guess iphone wouldnt receive any call for me, unless it is held in the right way.....!? now that's just stupid
look at how they're holding it...who the hell puts their entire fist around a phone then smashes it to their head? use you damn fingers like everyone else on the planet you damn orangutans. If you have to cup your phone the palm of your hand and wrap you fingers all the way around the entire case you shouldn't be making a phone call anyway - we can all thank Apple for that.
But why is it called an Apple? If you think it's called that after the story of the Garden of Eden where Adam masturbated in the hole of forbidden fruit that got stuck in his dick, you're right.
3Gs model still wor.k for some reason

hehehehehe
Meh people are just flaming the issues because it's Apple. I plan on getting an iPhone 4 when it comes to the Netherlands. I'm no fanboy but I do casually enjoy some of their stuff.
I have managed to gimp my reception on my N95 too. The fundamental difference though is that I have to hold the damn thing in a very awkward way - one I'd never do on a normal basis - and my signal drops from 5/6 bars to 3. I saw 2 for a few seconds before going to 3 again.
It is a valid concern if it causes dropped calls (which apparently it does) but the actual crippled signal is nothing new. It also only screws you over if you hold your phone in your left hand.
Being a lefty I'm used to paying more for guitars (/point Mio) so paying 30ish bucks for a case is np. I'd probably buy one anyway.
And even then just suck it up and hold it in your right hand =p
Clearly you're subhuman for being left-handed then.
well. this changes everything. again.
LOL, iPhone is so iNotPhone.
Well... at least we know the motion detection works well.
You know, I'm starting to wonder that he really is right.
You hear so much complaints about hardware. For example, the Wiimote broke thousands of televisions.
Never experienced something like that. If you aren't a fat American retard of 8 years old, and you put on a strap, play it normally, the controller will never slip out of your hands. I've got sweaty hands, and even my controller won't slip out of my hands.
Same with the Xbox 360. People complain about RRoD, scratches on the discs, but I don't have all that.
My Xbox works just fine, and it isn't even warm.
Why is that? I don't keep it next to all these other digital devices that makes it hot. Nor do I move my Xbox.
Just treat your stuff in a good way, and everything'll be alright.
You probably don't play it 48 hours straight like most gamers who have no lives whatsoever..
I suppose you're right. I can just use my cell phone by putting it on speaker and leaving it on the table. Oh wait, I think they have those already...
You'd be surprised how easily the straps broke when the thing first came out, so just putting it on wasn't really that effective for some people. Yes, people were stupid to use a full force swing with a controller, but adrenaline does that to some people.
As for the RRoD, it depends mostly on luck and the model. My 360 (I have a ps3 and prefer it :P) hasn't RRoD'd, but every one of my friends' 360s have done it multiple times, and they take better care of theirs than I do mine.
>Just treat your stuff in a good way, and everything'll be alright.
Yeah, just dont touch iPhone, and everything'll be alright.
what? that's the perfect sol... oh wait, i forgot the iphone basically consists of a giant touchpad.
The problem with the 4 is that this happens even when you do take care of it - specifically, anyone who's left handed is going to gave this problem every time they try to make or receive a voice call.
It's not as big a problem for righties, but even so a normal grip can cause the problem.
It's partially caused by newer FCC regulations requiring that phone antenna be as far from the head as possible - which results in them being moved to the bottom of the phone, and partially by poor design and testing from apple. A few radio engineers noted the placement and predicted this even before the phone was released.
The former problem can be worked around by good designers - for example, using an telescopic drop down antenna is an easy option, but an ugly one. Alternatively, placing the antenna under the skin of the device - which is the approach most smart phone designers use.
In Apples case, they externalised the antenna without considering ergonomics, and then failed to test the device properly. If they did test for this, then it tells a sad story about their QA schema. They could have fixed this by running a glass bumper around the edge of the phone - the antenna would still be 'external', but couldn't come into direct contact with your hands. The bumper that they sell achieves this effect - but having to buy an accessory to make something fit for purpose is not something that should be acceptable - and I'm pretty sure that consumer protection laws in the UK (Sales of Goods act) and Europe will force Apple to fix the issue for their European customers at no charge.
Will be interesting to see how much they try to fight it though.
