From its 1998 debut to its just released 2010 remake, some quite impressive evolution is evident in White Album – 2ch provides the usual scrupulous comparison above.
What the still comparison does not convey is the difference introduced by the “motion portrait” system the game uses – that can be seen here.
On the other hand, the PS3 remake gleefully throws out the sex and simulation elements in favour of being a pure visual novel, although it also adds full voicing.

Never played the games, but these are fabulous representations of the decades they were produced in, mainly because they are drawn in a generic, trendy style. In that sense they're both well-drawn.
The new art is nice and all, but the old one is neat as well. It has that kind of... old charm to it.

wow i remember this kind of art from the 90's it has an old feeling even while i was watching it though i appreciate it cause it look funny and at the same time cute. now we the technology to produce an even more moe art but then again the story get's degrade as we go on. oh well it's kinda like the video game industry the more multiplayer games keep coming instead of high quality single player games. still can't wait for metroid other m and mgs rising :)

the 90's has a child-like feel to it while the recent one has a mature atmosphere.anyways,hope they release a pc version for the remake,either with or without the h-scenes.
Gave this show up by the third episode... But the art really was improved in the remake! Too bad about the H elements though.

90s were so hot that several anime characters faces just started melting. Rina and Mio included.

Though I got the image 1999 instead of when it was released.
The Win95 desktop was awesome with it.

I happen to love the anime series and I'm not surprised the V.N. got a remake...I gotta admit, it's pretty awesome to see the comparison from then and now...

Current Day styles are more simple looking than back in the earlier years. Plus the bloom effect.
But that doesn't mean the left column loses to the right. The left column are just as awesome as the revisions.

Well, I still really like all of Rina's artwork from the old version, although maybe it was generic at the time. Maybe I like it because I got a lot of these pics from these "random hcg without source"-galleries back then, I don't know.
But yes, the 2010 version really looks like a generic eroge made to be sold and nothing more. To me it's a case of: "Well, it looks nice, but I don't need to get it because I can just use sankaku channel to get a few thousand cgs that look the same."
Also it seemed to me on the first quick look as if they forgot to add shading to the characters faces.
And I know that those gradient lighting layers are standard in about every single anime and game produced today, but compared to the old version they seem completely overused and drastically reduce saturation and contrast.

Yes, '90's anime style was usually mannered and odd looking, although we thought it was great at the time.
Just like how in 12 years everyone's going to look back on art created now and say the exact same thing.

I don't particularly think the new version looks better...it's just re-done using modern character design conventions.
The "motion portrait" thing is pretty cool...though it's really something that someone should have tried like 10 years ago.
Fronzel, look at the H-Game called "School Days"
It is animated in a similar way.
I think the new artwork looks much more generic. Furthermore, the colours are less vibrant and the shading looks cheap. All in all, not an improvement.
I think the old artwork's vibrant palette is tacky-looking. The left side only looks better in the third picture.
I'm sure people are disappointed with no remake for the sex scenes.
Also maybe the fact that the story element feels awfully aged. Trouble with a cheating boyfriend in the music industry? How so innocently cliche. That is kinda its draw I guess.

That was the problem with a lot of the art back then. Which is why I tended to hate older drawing styles. They just looked too... off. Almost like people weren't paying attention to human anatomy anymore.

Does White Album even work as a modern visual novel? Sure it's got prettier pictures but everything else about it is crap. The only good bit about it was the eroge.....
