It has not taken long for the Microsoft’s glittering new Xbox 360 “Slim” to be tarnished by yet another hardware problem – this time the long-running problem of the console scratching DVDs into oblivion if subjected to motion whilst loading resurfaces with a vengeance, as the below video demonstrates.
The video apparently comes by way of E3 journalists who were bribed with consoles for going to the trouble of attending:
Player 1
This is not actually a new problem, but supposedly previously only affected a minority of users – Microsoft has been repeatedly investigated and even subjected to legal action over the issue, but denies responsibility and blames the problem on faulty users.
The issue is covered in detail on the unsurprisingly lengthy Wikipedia article on Xbox 360 technical problems – Microsoft apparently claims that “bumpers in the disk tray would cost 25 cents per console” and so naturally had to be left out.
Just whether it will affect all the new models is not clear.

well let's see, pay 11 million bucks to fix the problem or potentially get sued for way more then 11 mill... which would you pick
Is this a big deal? Really?
Aside from when my Xbox caught on fire, I've had absolutely no reason to change its position while I was playing it.
I don't live in some magical world where I expect shit to work forever. I live in a world where Gamestop employees tell me that the first wave of PS2 games would lose disc integrity at like 10 times the rate of more recent games and it was perfectly natural from my unscratched discs to just stop working.
that didnt seem to me to be an insignifigant movement he made i dont think minor vibarations especialy lateral vibrations will be a problem the only thing that will be of concern is if it falls over, why is this a big deal any way idk about you but im not in the habbit of moving my xbox while playing something anyway hell i get nervous moving any of my external hardrives while running while ive never had a problem it still scares the hell out of me
they should make a percentage poll of how many people don't read manual about using products. i guess that guy's a noob or did that on purpose because he hate final fantasy 13. people should already know that microsoft wants more money that is why they made a slim version of xbox 360 which will probably fail until they got a better slim version. i rather stay with red ring of death than scratcing my cd, since there won't be any game replacement. if microsoft plan on making blue-ray it probably the same result. microsoft should just make pc or laptop version of xbox 360.
Try not to be so narrow minded...
What about you playing and you brother/pet/parent/girlfriend or maid for all I care slightly moves the darn box while trying to reach behind the tv to get something or whatever?
Accidents can happen, and unless you live alone or have threatened every single living or moving object in your household with a death penalty if they get close to your system, will most likely happen sooner or later...
Of course you could take extra, paranoia-like care:" What, you gonna enter the room? Lemme just save, quit, take the disc out and turn console off real quick".
On the other hand, they DO include a warning so you can't really do anything about the scratching besides hoping they had been more aware of the risk during design.
Meh, it'll be fixed in the XboX 720 anyways, right?
I doubt it. :( This issue was already on the original XBox 360, and they didn't fix it with this new model. What makes you think that they'll fix it with the next one after this?
better keep the volume down if you have a half assed soundsystem.. i have a decent subbwoofer and its destroyed disc playing in my 360 before.. this thing looks even worse!!
The dude was pretty stupid for doing what he did.
...but, it does not excuse Microsoft for poor quality standards. Of course nobody should be stupid enough to shake a console, but what about accidents? What if you're playing and for whatever reason the console falls or just shakes around a bit? You're console gets beat up AND you lose your game?
It's funny that Xbox fanboys are eager to criticize everyone in the planet, but will never allow themselves to hold Microsoft accountable for its laziness.
The guy in the vid was an idiot, but Microsoft is still lazy.
try tipping your computer to a 45 degree angle while its doing shit with the disc, I'm sure it'll be fine!
Either PS3 fanboys are desperate for something to attack, or people on Sancon are stupid enough to defend the position: "What if I want to shake my console while it's running?"
The stupidity of this site will forever continue to amuse me.
Uh, didn't anti-skip technology for PORTABLE CD players become standard like...five years ago? Why the fuck is THIS even allowed to happen? The Sega CD didn't even do this...
In my time, we were supposed to keep domestic consoles in one place, not drag them around while playing. Hell, even the booklet says so.
So they think they can substitute 25 cents bumper stickers which could save at least a game per gamer with a freaking warning sticker? Idiots.
OK, you are retarded to think you can shake a drive while shit is playing in it. Are you saying that you'd shake your dvd player while a movie is in it?? I don't F***ing think so.
Well this guy is retarded! This isn't a faulty console, this is a retarded person who is being stupid... And this is stupid that this made news. Especially after there's a f***ing sticker on it saying not to do it.
This isn't microsoft's fault, this is a retarded gamers fault. The same thing happens when you move your ps3 around when it's reading discs, yet I don't see that news. What a bunch of bias asses :(
Dear Microsoft,
Stop being fucking cheapskates and install the 25 cent bumpers onto your fucking consoles, you god damn penny pinchers.
Sincerely, Anon
"apparently they're serious this time like before how like maybe it might scratch up your disk. its serious business when you... move the console with the disk spinning in the track."
LMAO
again... failure as a gamer. Would you move your shake your dvd player while it's running? I don't think so...
I saw the exact same thing happen a few years ago. At a friend's house, his 360 was in the vertical position and when he flipped it over horizontally while the game was playing and it left that huge circular scratch, ruining the game.
WHY DID YOUR DUMBASS FRIEND DO THAT?
Although you should never do that, it does seem overly sensitive. I mean, you should never drop your console on the floor when you're taking it out of the box either, but its nice to know that if you do by accident once or twice it isn't the end of the world.
Take my 360 for example. It's vertical as that's the only way I can fit it at the front of my room. But if someone is messing around and knocks the table when am playing a game, it might fall over. It would be nice to have the security of a reasonably well built product so that the game I'm playing at the time is not ruined if that happens.
Clearly fags do not know how to use technology. Maybe he should stop getting fucked by other guys long enough to read the instructions.
Any version of Xbox always was a piece of shit! There are ONE serious console today: Playstation. Only it!
Fanboy much?
I'm serious about watching cutscenes of call of duty 4 in 3D as well. Get real you tool.
*sigh* its like with 99% of devices that use CD's or DVD's they state not to move them while the disk is spinning, its pure idiocracy to do so because even with 'bumpers' you risk damage to the disk..
simple solution, don't move the console while the disk is spinning, or infact, while there's even a disk in there...
Anyone that moves a console while the disc is spinning deserves to have their game scratched. End of story. The person in the video knew that and did it anyway.
As for the "Earthquake" factor, it'd have to be a damn big quake and I imagine the system would have to be sitting vertical and fall on it's side. This is "issue" is a minor one at best and non-user caused problem is a very situational one.
Thats really bad, but hey whos going to move the xbox while playing? you just have to warn everyone.
xxx box raped the dvd
I almost posted a rant on "Yeah, more RROD!" on the last one, but trust the 900lb Gorilla on Vi-gra to find a new, fancier way to F*ck things up!
25 cents a console.
Oh, and an oil company got Dubya and Cheney to write them out of having to buy a $500K blowout preventer...
Haha, that guy is pretty stupid. He shouldn't be left unattended near anything with moving parts.
ummm are these people absolutely retarded? it's common sense not to do that or it will scratch the disk. do they need to be told that jumping off of buildings is bad too?
Dude is a total idiot...
can microsoft get ANYTHING right when it comes to games? this is just sad at this day in age.
why the hell they dont solve it already?
i dont want a console that i can even touch when a game is on...
I work in a rental store and we have lost a lot of product because of this problem with the old Xbox 360.
I am inclined to agree with Microsoft that it is the fault of the users themselves.
NEVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE stand up a 360. Leave it flat and with any gaming console DO NOT move the fucking thing when it is turned on.
It's common sense people. Not to mention THEY PUT A GODDAMN STICKER ON THE CONSOLE TELLING YOU NOT TO DO IT! Another problem solved by reading! Literacy is our friend. Jesus.
DON'T DO THAT!!! DON'T DO THAT!!!
This isn't new... at least I remember seeing my friend fuck up his gears of war disk doing the same shit with the a normal 360, the console has a little sticker telling you not to move it. And yeah exactly the same shit happened.
Why is that everytime I read a article concerning microsoft or xbox, why does sankakucomplex always hate on thier system. Its getting on my nerves, I have all 3 consoles and find them all equally good. So can someone tell me why, they always say negative things abour it?
Xbox 360, the Ford Pinto of game consoles!
Anyone who lifts their console like that when its going deserves a scratched disc. You have to be a major fuckwit to not know moving that would be a problem.
I guess you've never had a connector go loose before. I used to do it all the time on my ps2/ps1/dc. Hell I do it occasionally with my wii. Sometimes things comes loose because of some act of god or other various reason. You shouldn't have to turn of the system completely (never mind the fact if you're not at any type of save point and have to redo hours of work or whatnot) just to tighten a loose connector.
You can also ignore the fact that you can go out, buy a $10 walkman and move around all you want while the cd is spinning. A CD player in a car (or if you're rich enough, a dvd player for those kids in the back seat) don't scratch up all your discs and cars can go through way worse trauma than slowly tilting the system to immediately hear a loud garbage disposal noise that leaves your disc completely useless.
well now we all know, if you think your connection is lose don't flip the console over to have a look. simple. try putting it somewhere you can access the cables, better yet, make sure it's plugged in properly before you turn it on.
Why would you do that? Tilt the 360 with the game in.. It's not like I'm going to keep moving it whilst playing my game, I'm pretty sure I'll have made my mind up on what position I would like it to stand.
To those of you who will try to dampen my post (no doubt PS3 junkies), stop. You contradict yourself by posting Xbox fan boy, when in fact you are the fan boy, because you are reading a post about a console that has nothing to do with you. I wouldn't go on to a PS3 problems website if I didn't own one.
Think about it, your life is really that sad that you browse the web for such topics to flame?
Worry less about a console you don't own and more on your beloved PS3.
I own a PS3 and Xbox, Xbox Live is a lot better than PSN.
ultimate fail microsoft.
sure get rid of the rrod but replace it with the white disk scratch of death.
Since ODDs don't use R/W heads, how are the discs getting that ring? no head means no cushion of air to mess with when you tilt the console. On that note, who fucking willingly tilts their console when it's running?
WOW GUYS, WAY TO COMPLETELY IGNORE THE ORIGINAL SOURCE IT CAME FROM.
THE LEAST YOU COULD DO IF YOU'RE GOING TO OVERDRAMATIZE A SITUATION IS GIVE CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE.
Destructoid deserves more than just being called 'E3 Journalists' by you fuckers.

Hasn't there always been warnings against moving your console with a disc in it?
I can vaguely recall reading bits and pieces of the PS2 manual and seeing that written down.
No fucking shit it destroys the discs.
Would you shake your pc while you're playing a game?
Same thing happens if you move a PS3, normal 360, and quite a few other disc drives. Don't move it while the disc is spinning, duh~ It'll hit the laser, or some other part, and scratch both the disc and the internal components of the drive.
um wtf r u talking about? this isnt an issue for the ps3. you can juggle the ps3 while loading a disc and it wont destroy it like an xbox would
