metal_gear_solid_rising

E3 sees the release of spectacularly violent gameplay videos of the latest Metal Gear title, Metal Gear Solid: Rising, and also sees Solid Snake buried for the time being.

The game itself is apparently set for a full multiplatform release on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360.

Presumably this constitutes the taboo Kojima previously alluded to – nothing to write home about in most western markets, but probably enough to see the game banned completely by Japanese censors.

As Kojima considers that he is catering to international markets rather than merely Japan, it is easy to see why he would not care too much about the Japanese reaction considering the tremendous appeal of dismemberment in detail to bloodthirsty westerners.

For those curious in the cutting mechanic demonstrated in the video, I feel it's worth mentioning it's a nigh 1:1 copy of the one illustrated in Tiny and Big, an other wise unnoteworthy indie game for the pc.

I don't know about everyone else, but I've already had my share of cutting things. A complete 15 minutes worth.

Kojima will make a truckload of money off Europe and the United States will this and he doesn't have to care about what Japan thinks for once. Also, a little slicing of human bodies gets the Japanese all offended? Whatever

No, they just treat violence the same as any other "offensive" thing. Here you show a tit, and it's M (17+) rated. Shoot someone through the head and it's T(13+).

To make things worse, ANY game that involves the equivalent of sexual content in soft-core pornography, or even sex scenes in films. i.e. simulated sex with no genitals seen will receive an AO rating.

That's Adults Only 18+ and no retailer will carry it. It's the same thing as NC-17. The kiss of death.

No game has ever received an Adults Only rating because of violence, but many games have had to be censored for extremely tame sexual content to get an M rating instead of AO.

The ESRB like all ratings boards is a panel of censorship.

The only game rated AO in the U.S. was Manhunt 2 (The uncut version) but still is as you said "no retailer will carry it".

    Righteous...Righteous...

I wonder if we can cut some enemy FROGs...

Nothing makes Metal Gear guro more appealing to someone like me than watching Cyborg Raiden cutting sexy, war-torn girls in battle-suits into blood pieces...

I wonder if the female deaths would be something like in Afro Samurai where you could even cut their tits off...

That said, Raiden makes Cutman look like a bloody saint...

*you see Cutman hang himself in the distance*

He wasn't even involved in making Rising, because he was working on Peace Walker while Rising was in most of its development.

If it didn't have at excessive gore, it would look unrealistic to cut a man in half and not having his insides all over the place.

But the cutting itself is a new gameplay mechanic which
    will make it very interesting.

Not even close. The game mechanics appears top notch and well-used, whereas Afro Samurai - as much as I love the series - was an aweful game as a Hack n's Slash.

I was very skeptical of this. I thought "God, they're just making another spin-off of their series to make a quick buck", seeing as how they're making a game based on a secondary character. But then I watched this, and my jaw dropped through the Earth. I am so getting this game now.

What I'm hoping for is that stealth is utilized in gameplay. It is Metal Gear, and he is a ninja, so I'd be surprised it wouldn't, even if it is very violent. Plus the slash-effect thing near the end is a nice touch to the genre.

Oh, and knowing Kojima, this Hack n' Slash game will finally have what many others lack greatly - a good story!

This is nothing new. We already have objects like fruits and bags of flour exploding when shot at in MGS2. Of course, I doubt y'all were even born back then, so your fanboy gushing over this is understandable.

Even the lame Hokuton no Ken Musou game from Koei had enemies that explode when you punch them.

I believe in free speech and liberty to the death, however the double standards of western puritan culture are vulgar.

You can't have certain sounds coming from a person's mouth because some people give them slang meaning of feces or sexual intercourse. I am of course talking about the words shit and fuck.

You can't show less than 1% of the human body; the female nipple/aerola, pubic region, or genitals.

Because somehow nudity and words equates to sex or vulgarity/obscenity. Because hearing or viewing these things will instantly start making you defecate everywhere, and eat your own shit, and even rape other people.

These are the perverse thoughts of our society today. That something that is important and beautiful is harmful.

Yet we can show explicit violence from R rated films and M rated games (both for 17 and up) on TV without any objection at a TV-14 rating. This is what your society has become. Not only one of double standards, being unable to tell fiction from reality in some aspect of life, but a society that promotes violence and hatred over peace and love.

I'm normally a bigger fan of snake's way of doing things, but somehow I feel like this is something I've waited for a long time, and I didn't expect it to be coming out of a Metal Gear. I will preorder this from wherever in the world it will first be released, and if Move support is added for it, it might give me a reason to buy that too. ^^
Ever since I first learned of this generation's capabilities of destructible terrain, and such, I was hoping for it to be put to use in some way similarly to this.

i wish this style of cutting gets to be a standard in games and not copyrighted like RedFaction's GeoMod...when i make music, i don't try to compete but i try to make music better... so i wish it was so in games... now as presented, "You Cut What You Will" meaning if you make a murderous mess; it's your fault, if you kill nothing, it's your way! you will your way to will... you will what you want, not what you desire... at least they "Ungayed" Raiden... tho what REALLY surprise me is that you can cut stuff in the map! like parts of buildings! tho is it only special parts? now if it is every thing then i see my self playing around trying to dig a door to skip parts lol!!!

I don't understand why this sort of violence is special or taboo. It's more or less on par with something like Ninja Scroll or Basilisk, or any anime OVA from the 80s.

I don't really think this is the "taboo" he was referring to.
    It's fairly violent but,
    1. Violence in video games is not considered taboo: lots of violent games exist, keep being made and are very popular.
    2. The detail depicted is just an evolution of that. It does not "challenges" any industry convention. It's natural to expect more gore detail as overall game detail increases.
