Nintendo’s DS successor “3DS” handheld has been at the centre of a wide variety of supposed leaks and rumours, and now an apparent photo and a mockup of the device have spawned an equally wide variety of visual depictions.
Based on the currently available information (almost all of which comprises rumours and speculation) Kotaku made up an exciting picture of the device:
An actual leaked image has also surfaced through mysterious Chinese sources, of completely uncertain provenance and veracity:
Considering what happened with the leaked PS3 Slim images, this is rather inconclusive.
Not to be left out, 2ch also gleefully provides its imagined 3DS:
Needless to say, just what form the final device will take is a matter of some speculation.

just like apple ipad.
wider screen eveery time it evolve.
16:9 for video
16:10 for gaming
try it and you will understand.
LOL what is going the 3DS be ? better 3d graphics ? bigger screen ? or both ? i think is just a fake XD
3ds is a confirmed new ds that will be 3d (think 3d movies)
And without the need of special googles like the Hitachi Wooo H0001 cell phone.
LOLZ.... Just like the ones that came out when NDS was still in infant stage.... Gotta watch out for a sleeker design.... either ceramic white, black or silver.....
I'm just saying... but you can see how the 3ds is going to look in a video on youtube!
If you're wondering, it looks like the 003 picture.
3DS? Sounds like a certain 3rd Gen smartphone model.
when everything is said and done, the 3DS will be a total let down for sure!
it may not be, look at any of my other posts on this page for why its may not be. to nummaranse to make comment here.
Sounds like what people've been saying about NDS before it came out.
i just couldn't figure out why 2 screens,
most of its uses could have been minimaps, or pause menu things, and generally the games don't know what to use the second for. and of every 50 games that don't know what the fuck to do with it, only 1 does and needs it.
if the screens were a bit higher resolution, and widescreen i can almost guarantee there would have been next to no need for a second screen.
@18:53 13/06/2010
I've seen a few games that realised they didn't need the second screen, so left it turned off to save power. What you're describing is just the marketing dept. yelling 'Hey, you need to use this' so they've got something they can show on the packaging.
That said, there's a lot of good games that really did take advantage of it, so while it may have seemed odd at the time, it's not something I'd like them to take back in hindsight.
Even with games that didn't use it well, having the choice between the screens helped. I'm thinking 'Elite Beat Agents' and 'Trauma Center' versus 'Metroid Hunters' - all old games, so people who don't really play should get what I'm talking about.
In EBA and TC, the touchscreen was used for both control and display of the game. For those kinds of game, you needed to be hitting specific points on the screen, so it worked in the games favour to have the controls 'overlayed'.
In MPH, you didn't need specific points, but just tracking the direction the stylus was moving. On top of that, having the controls on the same screen as the action would have meant you'd be blocking your own viewpoint - a gamebreaker for a first person shooter.
If there had only been one active display, one of these two types of game would have been impossible. If the only display was the touchscreen, then hunters wouldn't have happened - you can't get enough control with just a D-pad or two. If the layout had been preserved, but the touchscreen was 'dark', like the touchpad on a laptop computer, then EBA and TC wouldn't have worked - you simply wouldn't have the accuracy that you'd have needed.
So yeah, it's a decision than in hindsight was very effective.
That Chinese image isn't of the 3DS. Here's why:
1.) The XYAB buttons are placed in a stupid form of which Nintendo would never do.
2.) The 3DS is confirmed to have an actual joystick also. Of which that image does not have.
3.) The 3DS is confirmed to have a 3D camera also, which is shown in Kotaku's mockup. The little black rectangle above the D-PAD, which is 2 little camera's side by side.
4.) If you look closely at the image, you can see some faint signs of bent paper to the image. Looking closer you see that it's actually a picture taken of an image printed on a piece of paper. It shows classic signs of an image of something on paper, diffusion and grain match.
So what this most likely is, is merely someones shitty 3D mock-up rendered out, printed on paper and then snapped a photo of with a shitty quality camera as to not give away the fact it's just a render.
look at the snes controller, the n64 controller, the gamecube controller, and to some extent the classic controllers, they all have the cocked abxy buttons
confirmed by who? i hope they have 2, but is there official nintendo shit you can point to and nothing without a firm source, not any kind of a friend of a friend source, or a trusted insider.
im sorry but a 3d camera is pushing the nintendo's battery over all else a bit to far. this isn't natal, and again source.
and what you are saying about the paper is tru, ot alt least highly likely, the other things above stand.
i watch gaming things all the time, and if any of the 2 things you said were officially announced they would have lit the fuck up, but im giving you the benefit of the doubt and asking you to tell where that info came from
Gotta keep up with the news on sites like Gizmodo and Kotaku more! Nintendo had filed a patent for a developer board which was obviously a new DS type. It had a joystick on it, and 2 different sized screens. It was also confirmed about the 3D camera thing at some point, I forget when and where.
But now that E3 is here, what I said has been truly confirmed :)
the famicom one is the best
Wow. 7 and 11 kick ass!
how about making a poster of it, and add a "i want to believe" mention ?
The ones with the many screens are hilarious, especially since people believed them.
Is it just me, or dis that old video of the PS3 slim actually turn out to be real?
Who knows for this one then? Could be real
So #8 has a self-destruct button...
Oh wow, I love the 2ch mockups
#8 even have a self destruct button.
That could be useful :)
oh god to many screens on the second to last
reminds me of bullshit wave/buzz around the gbaSP
Fourth!
Where the fuck is the analogue stick!!!
They promised a stick!
STICKS
you want another sytem that has 3d games with onyl 1 analogue stick?
the ds only works now because its all made for a d pad but bring in a stick and we will bitch about not having 2 for years. the only difference is, nintendo may listen and put 2 in.
Those ABXY buttons on the Chinese 3DS look a bit.. Weird.
They look more like the layout on older controllers like the one for the SNES.
lol at the 1000 marios in pic 12
007.jpg is just stupid , u cant fold it properly...
The way you say that almost makes you sound confident that you could close #5, #6 and #11.
#11 becomes a box when closed.
Wow. The majority of these are so unimaginative, it's easy to see why they're not designers...
- Zanosuke
i wish i was, i would make a 8 directional d pat that wasn't shit a reality.
This is the next gen of portable saying the graphics will be better than wii... bye bye psp
and hello psp 2 with 720p lcd minimum.
look a the iphone 4, they have the type of lcd i always wanted in handhelds, a 300dpi minimum. at psp size screen that is at least 720p.
and portable processors can handel that now, just not with console polly counts, but the resolution is what matters right now, if jagies are a thing of the past, or at least jagies caused by low rez, than i am happy with however bad everything else looks.
I still don't understand...the 3DS is supposed to make 3D images right? But...how? You don't need to where those 3D glasses I'm assuming.
The answer is Sharp.
http://news.cnet.com/2100-1040-978499.html
thats what i was talking about in my above posts, and i also brought up the large r&d nintendo has been spending recently.
i know about these from last ces. back in 2002 it was nothing much more than intreasting, but now its gotten a shit load better.
2002? Old news is old.
"I'm sure there will be a (3D) notebook product and an LCD monitor as well" toward the end of 2003"
LOL
Oh my! It looks ever so exciting!
I'm being sarcastic.
saving money for 3D Love Plus
Haha, picture #11. What are 2ch thinking? XD
And I always find those like #8 very freaky.
I still won't buy one :P
Number 7 cannot be closed.
Try flipping it. The side and the top will hinder each other.
#11 is not bad if the extra screens are touchscreens.
The left and right ones can be folded back and operated with middle finger~pinky.
You can rest your balls on the very bottom screen and operate the screen above it with your penis.
Numbers 7 and 11 hurt my stomach.
You can just imagine trying to use 11 in that form. How small would it be or how far away would you be from the top screen?
Number 8 buttons:
"Start"
"Select"
"Reboot"
"Self-Destruct"
Hah.
I don't think you'll be able to anyway. The 3DS was just an April Fools, I had lots of fun with it. Now I'm still wondering if one of my friends still believes there's no K-On S2.
The April fools joke that had info on it BEFORE april the first? Like at least an entire week before April? Fail troll is fail?
so EVERYONE HERE KNOWS
there is a type of lcd that is experimental right now, that is 3d without glasses.
nintendo spent 300mill in r&d in recent years (up from 30 after the wiis release) , and honestly, unless they are doing a wii2 with custom prossers and graphics, or a natal meats move kind of thing, they dont need nearly that much for just using it to a 720p system, maybe if they were aiming 1080p, but its obvious they dont give a fuck about that.
now 300 mill + if it was spent on the monitor tech advancement, all i can say is holy shit.
They didn't chase 1080p last generation because they figured (and were apparently correct) that it wasn't affordable at the time. Look at the cost, and the hardware problems the PS3 and 360 have both had for indications why.
That said, we're getting on for six years later now and the cost of the GPU's capable of 1080 has fallen quite a bit. The tech's matured and some of the revised chips need much less cooling. It wouldn't surprise me if the next console from Nintendo does have a 1080 capability - if it only adds ten or twenty dollars to the cost of a console. Even if developers don't use it for straight graphics, they can turn that processing power onto things like physics or simple AI (think shooters with swarming opponents).
I'm more interested to see if Sony and Microsoft have learned their lesson - selling the consoles as loss leaders has hurt both of them big time. If they've learned the lesson, I'd expect the current generation consoles to be current for another 5 or 6 years at least. They're just about reaching the stage that they're able to break even on the consoles themselves, so if they can extend the life of the current consoles (I suspect Kinect and Move are intended to do this) they'd be in a better position financially than if they tried to start a new round of console wars.
It's more than meets the eye.
Well, if you've seen some of those extreeme otaku from 2ch you'd understand why they like lots of screens.
I read in a magazine that the buttons and such wouln't be "buttons" but touch sensitive area. That way it wouldn't have parts sticking up against the screen.
if you are talking about a buttonless handheld, that will kill the ds for me. try playing an ipod game that uses a dpad and buttons on screen only.
ah i see, i despise those kind of buttons.
no tactical response, and high fail rates, i actually would rather have screen based buttons than those, for reasons i dont want to explain.
either way it would be a failure to make screen based or non button buttons.
Same here, I like my touch screen, but I would prefer buttons over it any day.
Well, he didnt say that it comes without Buttons.
What he means is , that the Buttons will be Touch sensitive, which means that they're not on the Touchscreen and it's a different Technology.
Would look like this
http://dvice.com/pics/samsungluce-thumb-575x418.jpg
again, that's not a touchscreen, rather a field with touch sensitive spots. My old Cell had Buttons like this on the Bottom
(http://www.oled.at/images/handy/samsung-s5050.jpg) and I'd say that it works pretty well. Can't imagine playing Games with that though. Could be shitty, cos there's no feedback when you press the Buttons and you would end up pressing Buttons accidently. It would look cool though. lol
#10 is really rather nostalgic!
anyone else grew up playing with the Game&Watch machines? ;)
of course i did ;D
Had 3 of them ^^
lol i thought the exact same thing, although for me picture 11 was more like : Autobots transform!
pic 07 made me lol xD
but all are well done ;]
say that after its release i heard its using better graphics than the wii console...
so it will surpass the psp. on graphics alone
No rolled up 15" screen? Meh... ^_^
nope sorry, you've misheard.. it's supposed to surpass the graphics of an gamecube and i guess still be better than the psp :D
Stronger than Nintendo's newest home console? Now that would be interesting.
Last version of the imaginary 3DS... How can you hold this thing!?
The Nvidia Tegra chipset could offer good 3d, HD decoding etc with very good battery life.
Also offer full 2 SDHC slots, firefox as a browser, and an expansion port for add ons or just bring back the GBA slot.
But a general purpose expansion port could allow a third party vendor to handle GBA games or add things like a pico projector etc.
I can care less about how the DSi is 4mm thinner the DS's dimensions were perfectly adequate.
its possible, i believe the low end nvidia chips that dont need shit loads of cooling are capable of it, but are they hand held worthy? than again if its 3d in a needs to render 2 things at once, and its 2 screened, it would be rendering 4 things at once, so it needs significantly more power. however handheld wise, it should be possible to double the psp visuals on current batteries, and 4x that if you dont care about battery power.
This one is pretty Bad-ass.
http://img1.sankakustatic.com/wp-content/gallery/safe-misc-vi/nintendo-3ds-008.jpg
Pics number 10 is great.
Sure its bring memories.
For these who dont know.
Similiar looking games was very popular in my country soon after USSR colapse.
unlike picture #7, at least #11 can fold
some of the hinges on 7 are useless do to there placement
